Unit 1 Know yourself
Grammar
Learning Objectives
By the end of this lesson, we will be able to:
1. use connecting expressions to join ideas correctly;
2. use that-clauses as objects after verbs (e.g., think, know) and as complements after feeling adjectives (e.g., glad, sure);
3. write sentences and short paragraphs about personalities, jobs, and future dreams using these structures;
4. apply these grammar points to rewrite sentences (e.g., combining or transforming sentences) accurately.

Situation:Kitty is creative. Simon is also creative.
Options:
A. Either Kitty or Simon is creative.

I like tea. I also like coffee.
both...and
You can take the bus. You can take the subway. Choose one.
either...or...
Tom is not here. Jerry is not here.
neither...nor...
She is a singer. She is also a dancer.
not only...but also...
Read the texts below and pay attention to the words and
phrases in bold.
Many business managers are not only organized, but also creative.
Are you both creative and hard-working? If so, you could be either a painter or a fashion designer. Before you choose a job, it is best to think about your personality as well as your goals.
Lots of people are too shy to tell anyone about their dreams except their closest friends. Sometimes, neither their parents nor teachers know about their goals.
What can you discover from these sentences?
connecting words
