Passage 3
After entering high school, you may find there are many clubs at your school. You may think you’re too busy to join one. But as a former high school student, I can tell you joining a school club can greatly profit you.
Your old friends may have left you after entering high school. And it means you need to meet new people. Joining a club allows you to talk with others and find those who have similar interests as you. Based on my experience, I have met some of my best friends from club activities, which opened up many new doors for me.
Another really nice thing about joining a club is that it looks really good on college applications. Trying new things is something that looks really good on any application. Outgoing is considered a very good quality which shows that you are determined and ready to put yourself out there and best of all try new things. Furthermore, it can help you develop skills that can serve you during future college interviews.
Besides, joining a club can make students use their free time wisely. Most teens go to schools, then go back home and spend the rest of the day in front of a screen. Teens are also very likely to fall into the wrong crowd, which could lead to some bad results. Clubs are good places to spend time with good people to fall back on.
The most important reason why you should join a club is the long- term benefits (益处) it brings. The classroom isn’t the only learning environment in a school. The skills you learn in clubs are necessary ones that can be used in everyday life, which I think is the final goal of joining a club. Things such as meeting and speaking to new people, making the most of time, and being organized are those you will meet every single day of your life, but you can learn all of them in clubs.
So if you haven’t joined a school club yet, you know what you should do now.

Passage 6
School clubs are more than just extracurricular activities. They are a vital part of school life that can make learning more enjoyable and help students grow.
Academic (学术的) clubs encourage students to participate in learning beyond the classroom. For instance, a math club might hold competitions and group talks that help students think in new ways and understand difficult ideas better. A science club could do fun experiments showing how school lessons work in real life. These activities make learning more interesting and help students remember what they study.
Confidence plays an important role in both academic success and social interactions. Clubs offer a supportive environment where students can discover new passions and get better at things they enjoy. Whether speaking in a debate club, acting in a theatre club, or building robots in a tech club, students get praised for their work, which makes them feel good about themselves. Overcoming challenges in a club setting — such as presenting in front of an audience or leading a group project — helps them become stronger and more confident in all parts of life.
Besides learning skills, clubs help students make friends. When students like the same things, they become friends who can share thoughts, get advice and help each other. Liking the same things creates strong friendships that continue after school. Feeling part of a group is especially helpful during tough school times, giving students support and reasons to keep trying.
Clubs naturally need teamwork, whether planning activities, sharing materials, or working toward group goals. Through these experiences, students learn to work well with others, divide up jobs, and solve problems together. Being a club leader, like president or project helper, teaches students to be reliable, make choices, and encourage their classmates. These lessons prepare students to work well with others and lead with confidence in the future.
School clubs offer endless opportunities for personal development, fun, and friendship. Whether you are already a club member or are thinking about joining one, remember that every club experience is a step toward becoming the best version of yourself.
1.What is the main benefit of joining academic clubs?
A.They focus on group competitions. B.They offer fun after-school activities.
C.They give students more after-class exercises. D.They help students learn outside the classroom.
2.How do school clubs help students make friends?
A.By creating a competitive environment.
B.By offering both fun and learning experiences.
C.By creating a space for students to meet different people.
D.By allowing students to meet others with similar interests.
3.What can we infer about club leadership roles?
A.They are mainly about organizing events.
B.They involve working without considering others’ ideas.
C.They help students improve their academic performance.
D.They teach students how to manage complex tasks.
4.Where does this text probably come from?
A.A student handbook. B.A research paper. C.A teacher’s blog. D.A business website.
Passage 7
In Chinese high schools, clubs are popular among students — they often focus on hobbies like calligraphy (书法), science experiments, or debate, and usually balance activity time with school studies. Many Chinese students join clubs to find out about interests outside textbooks, make friends with similar likes, and learn useful skills.
Similarly, American high schools have many kinds of clubs, and one of the most loved is the Drama Club. It’s more than just an extracurricular activity — it’s an active group where students can be creative, get confidence, and make good friends. Unlike some clubs that focus on specific (具体的) skills, the Drama Club isn’t only about putting on plays; it helps students grow in many ways, so lots of teens love joining it.
Each term, the club presents a big show. Open tryouts welcome everyone — no experience needed. A freshman might do a short speech for a small role, while a senior could land a lead in Romeo and Juliet. Those who prefer not to act build sets, make costumes, manage lights, or keep practices on track. Even shy students find their special job, like a second-year student discovering a love for painting backgrounds.
Practices run 3-4 afternoons weekly. Students practice lines until they sound natural, fix small problems, and support nervous peers (同龄人). Performance week is exciting: the school hall shines as families arrive with flowers. The audience takes a quick breath at sad moments, laughs at funny lines, and cheers loudly at the end — making all the hard work feel worth doing, with pride lasting for years.
Beyond fun, the club teaches valuable skills: speaking in front of people, managing time, and understanding how others feel when acting as characters. For many American high schoolers, it’s more than a club — it’s a second family, where they learn to try new things, help others, and discover new sides of themselves.
1.Why do many Chinese students join high school clubs?
A.To focus on textbook studies.
B.To explore the world out of class.
C.To prepare for entering the college.
D.To spend more time on extra activities.
2.What can we learn about the Drama Club in American high schools?
A.It mainly attracts shy students.
B.It needs rich experience to join.
C.It offers a job for every student.
D.It holds a big show every month.
3.How do students feel about their work in the Drama Club?
A.Valuable. B.Annoying. C.Challenging. D.Comfortable.
4.How does the American Drama Club help students?
A.By improving their living standards.
B.By developing their all-round skills.
C.By focusing on their physical health.
D.By providing better studying conditions.
Passage 8
Being a student at Cambridge University gives you a great many opportunities to take part in its traditional activities. Rowing is among the most popular. In my first term as a student, I decided to give this sport a go and joined my college boat club.
One of the first things I learned was that rowing training comes in two parts: land training and water training. Land training on erg machines helped me get used to the basics of correct movement, techniques and rhythm. Since rowing is very much a team sport, all eight rowers in the boat must move together as one in order to deliver an efficient and powerful stroke.
Water training allowed me to apply all the techniques to the context of a boat on water. There were certainly more challenges on water than on land because it was hard for us to keep our boat balanced. The first few sessions out on the water were sometimes difficult but gradually helped us improve our confidence and trust in each other.
Halfway through the term I also decided to give coxing a go. I was not aware of the important role a coxswain (舵手) played in rowing before I became one myself. Having to do many things at the same time was certainly a challenge. Controlling a boat is not always easy, especially around tight corners of the river. Making the right decisions about what my rowers should do sometimes felt like a lot of responsibility. The complex aspects of this role felt like a great opportunity for me to develop some key decision-making skills which I didn’t expect before joining a boat club.
By the end of the first term at university, my team had competed in two races—Clare Novice Regatta and the Fairbairns’ Cup. I was initially really nervous before these races, but bit by bit they became very exciting.
Looking back on this term of rowing and coxing, it has been a wonderful experience full of little surprises along the way. Rowing really helped me connect better with my own body.
1.Why did the author join the boat club in college?
A.To develop teamwork skills. B.To take part in a famous race.
C.To try a popular traditional sport. D.To make many like-minded friends.
2.What can we learn from the land training of rowing?
A.It is much harder than the water training. B.It helps one get basic skills in rowing.
C.It applies techniques to a boat model. D.It teaches how to keep a boat balanced.
3.What can we infer about the role of a coxswain?
A.It needs one to handle multiple tasks at a time. B.It is a challenging job with little responsibility.
C.It is simple to control a boat around tight corners. D.It offers a good chance to make quick decisions.
4.Which of the following best describes the author?
A.Cautious and anxious. B.Curious and responsible.
C.Passionate and humorous. D.Dependent and patient.
Passage 9
My first day in high school will never be forgotten. When I got to the classroom in the morning, I saw that Mr. Brown had already put our names on our tables. After walking a few steps, I saw my name on the table right in the middle of the classroom. As I walked up to my table, my heart sang. “It would be great to sit there. I could see everything easily,” I thought to myself.
A while later, the other students entered one by one and took their own seats. And then Mr. Brown started talking. He showed us his classroom rules and tried to explain them. All of a sudden, a student called Tony started singing loudly. All the while he moved his body to the music. His desk mate Josh couldn’t understand why he was doing these things. Then he stood up and talked to Mr. Brown, “I don’t want to sit with this strange guy. Can I swap seats with someone else in this room, please?”
Mr. Brown didn’t answer his question directly. He stopped what he was doing and turned on his computer. Then he showed us some pictures about autistic (患自闭症的) kids. He explained that autistic kids have little self-control. They seem to do things that are beyond everyone else’s understanding. However, they can do many other great things, in the field of art or music for example. Then he told us that Tony was not good at maths, but loved songs. “He can sing thousands of songs. What’s more surprising is that he can remember all the words without any mistakes.” In the end, Mr. Brown added that although autistic kids were different, they should be loved.
Since that first day in high school, I became Mr. Brown’s admirer (崇拜者). I was pretty sure Mr. Brown would get all of us on the right track.
1.How did the author feel when seeing his table?
A.Annoyed. B.Upset.
C.Excited. D.Unhappy.
2.What did Mr. Brown do in the class first?
A.He introduced Tony.
B.He showed some pictures.
C.He got his computer ready.

3.In what way was Tony special?
A.He acted politely.
B.He was understanding.
C.He knew music very well.
D.He had a mathematical mind.
4.What does the author think of Mr. Brown?
A.He is off the right track.
B.He has too many admirers.
C.He is a great teacher.
D.He is too different to be loved.
Passage 10
At the University of Rochester, there is a popular club, called French Toast. Its name comes from the idea of a toast, a gesture of friendship between people. The logo is a slice of toast in a suit called “Frenchie”. The club seeks to introduce the language and cultures of French-speaking countries and students don’t need to know French to join!
“I don’t expect people to come in and know French at all,” said Kevin Johnson, a third-year student and club president. “If I set up a barrier like that, fewer people would come. Just show up and have fun!” Katy, the club’s PR leader, had no French experience before joining but has picked up the language through club activities. “It’s amazing that I’m so involved now,” Katy noted.
Food plays a key role in the club. Most meetings are held in the community kitchens, as members believe food is the best way to bring people together. Last spring, they hosted a French-style café event. Club members took on roles like waiters and guests. Waiters offered hot chocolate and other snacks, and prepared Post-its or printed cards with simple French phrases for ordering. Guests came and ordered in French. “This helped everyone communicate in French,” said Katy, who worked as a waiter at the event.
Another regular event of the club teams up with the Center for Education Abroad, during which members take a VR tour of the French-speaking world and learn about study-abroad programs in French-speaking countries.
Next semester, they’ll have their second French Culture Festival. With a larger budget, they hope to make it big!
1.What does the French Toast club aim to?
A.Prepare students to study in France.
B.Provide professional French courses.
C.Raise money for community activities.
D.Share cultures of French-speaking regions.
2.What did guests do at the French-style cafe event?
A.They ordered in French. B.They offered hot chocolate.
C.They taught waiters French. D.They made Post-its and cards.
3.Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?
A.Campus Café: French Snack Fun
B.Campus Events: Formal French Talks
C.French Toast: A Taste of French Culture
D.French Toast: A Path to Studying in France

A.They focus on group competitions. B.They offer fun after-school activities.

3.What can we infer about club leadership roles?
A.They are mainly about organizing events.

【答案】1.C 2.B 3.A 4.B
