2027年高三英语总复习题组层级快练(九) Ⅰ.阅读理解 Born in Xi’an, the eastern starting point of the ancient Silk Road, Xu Wen never imagined that a casual visit to an English antique shop would tie her to the route’s western end. Two decades ago, she and her British husband, Alastair Blackburn, were immediately captivated by three small, vividly colored, finely detailed paintings. Upon close examination, the couple found they weren’t just ordinary watercolors, as the paper was unique, and the pigments(颜料) seemed mineral-based. They bought the works on the spot. These pieces marked the couple’s first encounter with Tongcao painting, or pith painting, which served as a window to 19th-century China, an era without cameras. Tongcao paintings are created on dried pith from a rice paper plant, whose honeycombed texture differs sharply from fibrous ordinary paper. This unique material prevents watercolors from sinking in; instead, the paint sits on top, creating a subtle three-dimensional effect that modern reproductions struggle to match. Xu later explained that these artworks were like “Eastern postcards” made by Guangzhou artisans. When Guangzhou was China’s only port open to Western trade, painters adapted Western styles to depict daily life, festivals, and customs for curious Western merchants. Fascinated by this forgotten chapter of cross-cultural exchange, the couple spent 20 years collecting Tongcao paintings. They searched antique shops, auctions, and private collections across Europe, eventually amassing over 2,000 pieces depicting 19th-century Chinese life and customs. Their passion led them to build a museum in 2023, which was opened in a renovated historical building in Macclesfield—Blackburn’s hometown, long recognized as the Silk Road’s western terminus. “This museum bridges the two ends of the Silk Road,” Xu said. Many Chinese visitors have come and appreciated in person the town’s long history with China through the museum and the way local shops and cultural centers celebrated their ties to the Silk Road, Blackburn observed. To further promote this heritage, the couple founded the Silk Road Foundation in 2023 and invited students to copy Tongcao works. Xu also collaborated with schools in Xi’an, hoping to pass on this intangible culture heritage. “These paintings are living history,” she said. “We must make sure they keep telling their stories of East-West connection.” 1. As part of this year’s Diversity Arts Series, students at Dulwich College had an innovative journey into the tradition of Peking Opera. Together with Yuyin Society, a famous Peking Opera company in China, the school planned three different activities—an online Peking Opera experience; a day tour of Yuyinge, a theatre built in the Qing Dynasty; and a two-day in-person Peking Opera workshop. These activities brought a rich, interdisciplinary(跨学科的) learning experience to the students: music, art, drama, Mandarin and, of course, an awareness of Chinese cultural history. Yuyin Society recorded a video to immerse(使沉浸于) students in Peking Opera, just in time for their Chinese Culture Day. In addition to classic Peking Opera performances, the video included a special backstage view of what professional actors do behind the scenes, especially how they do their facial make-up and wear costume headpieces. Students learned about how different make-up and costumes would represent and reflect characters’ different personalities and status. On the day tour of Yuyinge, students were able to touch and feel the history of Peking Opera through the beautiful ancient architecture. In addition, students were able to explore Peking Opera through a mix of activities, including a crash course on Peking Opera, a costume dress rehearsal(排练), a lesson on how to do the stage movements, as well as appreciating an actual play. The students walked away with knowledge of the five major roles in Peking Opera and a keen aesthetic(美学的) sense of the art. Students at Dulwich College come from over 30 different countries and regions, each carrying a unique cultural background. Although most of the students had been exposed to Peking Opera to some extent, few had engaged with the art closely until they joined the two-day hands-on Peking Opera workshop. Teachers from Yuyin Society shared with students the various roles and techniques of Peking Opera and guided them through interactive activities, where our students learned to draw mask paintings, sing famous pieces and practise stage poses. 5. What can we learn about the Peking Opera event? A. It lasted for about two days. B. It included three different activities. C. It was supported by several Peking Opera companies. D. It was organised in a theatre built during the Qing Dynasty. 6. Which of the following did the students do during the day tour of Yuyinge? A. They saw what actors do behind the scenes. B. When did the students get the chance to draw mask paintings? A. On their Chinese Culture Day. B. During the Peking Opera workshop. C. While touring the old theatre of Yuyinge. D. During the online Peking Opera experience. 8. What is the author’s main purpose in writing this text? A. To encourage readers to appreciate Peking Opera. B.
