Amazing as these apps are in some promotions, they don’t work for everyone, especially if you speak a native language in regions like North America or New Zealand. This was something that Michael Running Wolf, a PhD student studying natural language processing, thought about when he was working as an engineer at Amazon on Alexa, the home assistant that responds to voice commands. When writing code for Alexa, he realized that its speech recognition algorithms(算法) would never work for the language of his tribe(部落). That is because many North American native languages are fundamentally different from English. Many native languages in America are polysynthetic, which means that words change form depending on context. In English, we might say “the full green cup is mine”, but in a polysynthetic language, you could express that with a single word. There are an endless number of words. “Words are created on the fly and are highly contextual,” said Running Wolf. Teaching Alexa to recognize these words would require a new algorithm. But that isn’t the only problem. To learn English, Alexa was trained on tens of thousands of hours of spoken English. There are no such data sets for most native languages. The answers started to come together after Running Wolf met Keoni Mahelona. Mahelona is the chief technical officer of Te Hiku Media, which runs a radio station broadcasting in te reo(the Māori language)—making it the perfect resource for an audio data set. Running Wolf is also working with his wife. Working with members of the Kwagu’ community on North Vancouver Island, his wife is creating an AR game that requires people to gather materials for a traditional feast(宴会) in the virtual land. It is fun to row a boat and find ingredients while chatting in the Kwak’wala language. “It’s language in context,” she adds, “which is the best way to learn.” 1. What can we say about a language learning app like Duolingo? A. It is difficult to operate. B. It contains invisible consumption. C. It is unfriendly to certain native languages. D. It wins favor with people in New Zealand. 2. How are polysynthetic languages different from English? A. They have no grammar rules to follow. B. They have words created dynamically. C. They have less complex word formations. D. They have words with multiple meanings. 3. Why is Mahelona able to help Running Wolf with his new algorithm for te reo? A. He has a radio station as a resource. B. He has a big team of engineers and experts. C. He is good at speech recognition algorithms. D. He is familiar with the Kwagu’ community. 4. What is the main advantage of using AR to teach language in context? A. It adapts the tasks to the users’ language competence. B. It enhances learning with interaction and engagement. C. It improves the study of language through repeated practice. D. It promotes the economic development of the Kwagu’ community. My father decided to start learning French when he was 57. On the surface, his retirement hobby seems a little random—our family has no connection to French-speaking countries—but his motivation ran deep. My grandmother developed signs of dementia(痴呆) in her early 70s, and studies suggest that being bilingual(会说双语的) can delay the onset of the condition by up to five years. According to a survey conducted by the language learning app Memrise, 57 percent of users reported “boost brain health” as a motivation for using the program. But is that really possible? “We use language in all aspects of daily life, so a bilingual brain is constantly working,” said Mark Antoniou, a professor at Western Sydney University in Australia. “You don’t really get that from other enriching experiences, like playing a musical instrument.” “The age at which you learn another language appears to be less important than how often you speak it,” said Caitlin Ware, a research engineer at Broca Hospital in Paris. Researchers from Toronto found that among people with dementia, those who were bilingual developed symptoms(症状) four years later, on average, than those who weren’t. However, evidence for the benefits of learning a second language as a hobby in your 60s is weaker. A small study found that older Italians who took English lessons for four months didn’t see any difference in their cognition(认知) scores, but people who didn’t take the lessons saw their scores decline. The scientists who conducted the study offered a few potential explanations for their disappointing result. One is that the participants were highly motivated volunteers, who may have already been at peak performance for their age, making it hard to see any improvements. Another is that the language interventions were perhaps too short. To Dr Antoniou, the limited findings are not entirely surprising.“No one would say that learning a new language for six months would be the same as having used two languages for your entire life, but language lessons can provide cognitive benefits by being intellectually stimulating,” he said. 5. Why did the author’s father learn French? A. He felt bored after retirement. B. He was closely connected to France. C. He tried to prevent dementia. D. He hoped to improve his terrible health. 6. Which statement might Caitlin Ware agree with? A. Learn to play a musical instrument. B. Speak a second language as much as possible. C. Get involved in various enriching experiences. D. Start learning a second language as early as possible. 7. What did the small study on older Italians find? A. Being bilingual has postponed dementia evidently. B. Taking English lessons enhanced brainpower greatly. C. Taking English lessons helped maintain cognitive abilities. D. Being bilingual has become an increasingly popular hobby. 8. What can be inferred about language lessons from Dr Antoniou’s words? A. They require lots of effort. B. They do activate human brains. C. They motivate people to change their lives. D. They have lifelong benefits regardless of the duration. Ⅱ.完形填空 In my freshman fall, I registered for chemistry, calculus(微积分), an elective, and an English class.
