Rush hour in Singapore, a crowded island city of nearly 6 million people, is much like rush hour in almost every major city worldwide. The dilemma, if left alone, will only get worse if, as is expected, Singapore adds a million more residents in the next decade. But city planners have no intention of leaving it alone. They have in mind a solution that is primary and all-round: to replace car ownership with ride-sharing.
The key element in this plan is the emerging technology of autonomous vehicles (AVs) — cars and shuttle buses (区间车) that, primarily on the basis of artificial intelligence, can drive themselves with no human at the wheel. To realize this future, Singapore is making farsighted investments in research and infrastructure (基础设施) and rewriting its transportation policies and regulations. It is working with 10 different companies on plans to roll out fleets of driverless cars.
The city agency recently removed the requirement that cars have human drivers. All new residential developments must now stick to rules that both accommodate self-driving vehicles and discourage car ownership: narrow roads, special road markings, gentler curves, specific curb heights and fewer parking spaces.
The first driverless buses and shuttles hit the city’s streets in November, 2025. If all goes well, a large fleet will soon be cruising the roads, calculating their routes on the fly based on where they need to pick up passengers and drop them off. Then a fleet of AVs will be deployed (部署) to work nights, sweeping the streets and delivering packages. “The goal here,” says Niels de Boer, who heads autonomous vehicle research for the Energy Research Institute at Singapore’s Nanyang Technological University, “is to make having your own car completely unnecessary by 2030.”
4. What is Singapore’s primary solution to heavy traffic?
A. Limiting the number of new residents.
B. Building more roads and parking lots.
C. Shifting from private cars to shared rides.
D. Encouraging people to use public buses.
5. What does Singapore consider essential for the AV future?
A. Immediate ban on human-driven cars.
B. Reduced investment in public transport.
C. Replacement of the fuel-powered vehicles.
D. Partnership between government and companies.
6. What change has been made to new residential developments in Singapore?
A. They need to be built along wider main roads.
B. They are required to provide more parking spaces.
C. They must be designed to suit self-driving vehicles.
D. They should be connected to the city center by shuttle buses.
7. What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A. The specific uses of AVs in daily services.
B. The deployment plan for AVs in Singapore.
C. The public acceptance of driverless vehicles.
D. The timetable for AV application in Singapore.
【答案】4. C 5. D 6. C 7. B

C
It doesn’t matter whether books are delivered in print or not; the main thing is to get lost in reading them.
Why should we bother to read a book? Many children say this from time to time. Many of the 12 million adults in Britain with reading difficulties also repeat it to themselves on a daily basis. But for the first time in the 500 years since Johannes Gutenberg promoted reading, in a world of technology, should they invest precious time sinking into a good book?
The discovery that our brains are physically changed by the experience of reading is something many of us will surely understand, as an extraordinary book influenced the way we viewed the world. This change only takes place when we lose ourselves in a book, abandoning the emotional and mental rubbish of the real world. That’s why studies have found this kind of deep reading makes us more involved.
Reasonably, reading is the foundation stone of all education. So reading is — or should be — an aspect of public policy. But perhaps even more significant is its emotional role as the starting point for individual voyages of personal development and pleasure. Books can open up emotional, imaginative and historical landscapes that equal and expand the force of the web. They can help create and strengthen our sense of self.
Technology puts forward as many solutions as it does challenges: for every door it closes, another opens. So the ability, offered by devices like e-readers, smartphones and tablets, to carry an entire library in your hand is an amazing opportunity. However, if reading were to decline significantly, it would change the very nature of our species. If we, in the future, are no longer connected to personal reflection and creative thought, we will be done.
8. How does the author present the issue in Paragraph 2?
A. By comparing different reading habits.
B. By analyzing the history of technology.
C. By quoting voices of doubt about reading.
D. By describing personal reading experiences.
9. What does the author mean by “lose ourselves in a book” in Paragraph 3?
A. Forgetting one’s identity. B. Escaping from daily worries.
C. Being fully absorbed in reading. D. Losing interest in the real world.
10. What is the author’s purpose in Paragraph 4?
A. To defend public funding.
B. To criticize current policies.
C. To compare books with digital media.
D. To show reading’s personal and social value.
11. What is the author’s attitude toward the future of reading?
A. Optimistic about technology’s function. B. Worried about deep reading’s decline.
C. Doubtful about e-reading devices. D. Satisfied with current trends.
【答案】8. C 9. C 10. D 11. B
【解析】
【导语】文章论述了深度阅读对大脑、个人成长的重要意义,同时表达了对阅读量大幅下降的担忧。
【8题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段中的“Why should we bother to read a book? Many children say this from time to time. Many of the 12 million adults in Britain with reading difficulties also repeat it to themselves on a daily basis.(我们为什么要费心读书?很多孩子时常这样说。英国有阅读困难的1200万成年人中,很多人每天也在心里重复这句话。)” 可知,作者引用孩子和有阅读困难成年人的质疑之声,引出话题。
【9题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第三段中的“This change only takes place when we lose ourselves in a book, abandoning the emotional and mental rubbish of the real world.(只有当我们lose ourselves in a book,抛开现实世界情绪与精神上的杂念时,这种改变才会发生。)” 可知,抛开现实世界情绪与精神上的杂念前提是完全投入阅读。所以lose ourselves in a book=指完全投入阅读。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段中的“Reasonably, reading is the foundation stone of all education. So reading is — or should be — an aspect of public policy. But perhaps even more significant is its emotional role as the starting point for individual voyages of personal development and pleasure.(合理来讲,阅读是一切教育的基石。因此阅读属于,或者说理应属于公共政策考量的一环。但或许更为重要的,是它在情感层面所扮演的角色:它是个人开启自我成长与愉悦之旅的起点。)” 可知,本段介绍阅读对社会(教育)和个人两方面的价值。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据第五段中的“However, if reading were to decline significantly, it would change the very nature of our species. If we, in the future, are no longer connected to personal reflection and creative thought, we will be done.(然而,如果阅读大幅衰退,将会改变人类的本质。如果未来我们不再进行自我反思与创造性思考,我们就完了。)” 可知,作者对深度阅读的衰退感到担忧。

For all snowflakes’ infinite structural variation, their journeys to the ground are surprisingly similar. Researchers studied more than half a million falling snowflakes and found a clear mathematical pattern that describes how they swirl (旋转) through the air.
Tim Garrett, an atmospheric scientist from the University of Utah, has studied snowflakes for nearly ten years. Although the behavior of such tiny, temporary objects may seem inconsequential, their falling speed plays a role in predicting weather and climate, even in warm areas. Most rain begins as snow, no matter where it finally falls.
Snowflake movement is usually studied in labs, but these conditions don’t show the real complexity of nature. Watching snowflakes fall in the real world has been a challenge for scientists for many years. To solve this, Garrett worked with engineers to build a machine that measures the mass, density, size, and shape of individual snowflakes. By placing this machine under cameras and a laser light, the researchers could track how each snowflake moved in the outdoor air. “We let the atmosphere act naturally,” Garrett says.
The researchers discovered a linear correlation (线性关系) between a snowflake’s average acceleration — which, in this study, is equal to how much it swirls — and its Stokes number, a value that describes how quickly an object responds to changes in airflow. For instance, a wide and loose flake swirls more than a streamlined one.
Using the Stokes number, scientists can now predict how much a single snowflake will swirl as it falls. Surprisingly, the distribution of average snowflake swirliness fits a nearly perfect exponential curve (指数曲线) — a fixed mathematical pattern — despite variations in air movement and snowflake shapes and sizes.
The reason for this pattern remains unknown, but it might be related to how air movement alters the shape and size of snowflakes, affecting their response to the air. “More research is needed to see if this pattern works in different conditions, such as different heights and ground surfaces,” says Jiarong Hong, a university mechanical
engineer. “If this pattern is universal, there must be a simple explanation,” Garrett adds, “We just need to find it.”
12. What does the underlined word “inconsequential” probably mean?
A. Unimportant. B. Complex. C. Permanent. D. Obvious.
13. How did the researchers study the movement of snowflakes?
A. By using weather satellite images.
B. By analyzing historical weather data.
C. By observing snowflakes in a controlled lab.
D. By measuring properties and tracking outdoors.
14. What does the last paragraph suggest for future research?
A. Study the impact of snowflakes on global warming.
B. Explore the swirling pattern under different conditions.
C. Develop a new machine to measure snowflake density.
D. Focus on internal structural variation of snowflakes.
15. What is the best title for the text?
A. Snowflakes Swirl by Math Rules. B. The Secret of Snowflake Structure.
C. Snowflakes Affect Weather Pattern. D. Airflow for Snowflake Formation.
【答案】12. A 13. D 14. B 15. A
【解析】

【12题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第二段中的“Although the behavior of such tiny, temporary objects may seem inconsequential, their falling speed plays a role in predicting weather and climate, even in warm areas. (尽管这类微小、短暂物体的表现看似inconsequential,但它们的下落速度对预测天气和气候起到作用,即使在温暖地区也是如此。)”可知,前后存在转折关系,雪花的运动看似不重要,实则对气象预测有意义,因此画线单词意为“不重要的”。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中的“To solve this, Garrett worked with engineers to build a machine that measures the mass, density, size, and shape of individual snowflakes. By placing this machine under cameras and a laser light, the researchers could track how each snowflake moved in the outdoor air. (为解决该问题,加勒特和工程师制造机器测量单片雪花质量、密度、大小与形状。将机器置于相机与激光下,研究人员能够追踪雪花在户外空气中的运动。)”可知,研究人员通过测量雪花各项特性并在户外开展追踪观测。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据第六段中的“More research is needed to see if this pattern works in different conditions, such as different heights and ground surfaces. (还需要更多研究,验证该模式在不同条件如不同高度、地表下是否成立。)”可知,未来研究要探究该旋转模式在各类不同条件下的实际情况。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是第一段中的“Researchers studied more than half a million falling snowflakes and found a clear mathematical pattern that describes how they swirl through the air. (研究人员研究五十多万片飘落雪花,发现描述雪花在空中旋转的清晰数学模式。)”可知,文章围绕雪花飘落旋转遵循数学规律展开介绍,“雪花依照数学规律旋转”最适合作为文章标题。

Featuring special teaching methods, ancient‑style buildings and beautiful surroundings, our school attracts numerous schools to come for visits. However, frequent visits from other schools are disturbing our normal teaching order. Classes are sometimes interrupted and we cannot focus on our study.
I have some practical suggestions. First, visits should be arranged on weekends instead of school days. Besides, visitors should follow fixed routes and keep away from teaching buildings. What’s more, the number of visitors each time should be limited.
I would greatly appreciate it if our school could take my practical suggestions into consideration.
Yours,

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
The wetland was silent at dawn, the sky turning from black to deep blue. I adjusted my field glasses, scanning the reeds (芦苇) for movement. As a volunteer with the Bird Protection Society, I’d spent every weekend this autumn monitoring migratory birds, recording species, counts, and behavior. My notebook held sketches, observations, questions. But today, we were hunting hunters.
Yesterday, a local farmer had reported something alarming. Gunshots at night, near the protected area. Hunters, using illegal nets and guns, trapping birds for the black market. The society had notified (通知) the police, but evidence was needed, solid proof of the crime. I was the closest volunteer, the only one who knew the hidden paths.
I found the first net at seven o’clock. It stretched between trees, nearly invisible, designed to catch birds by their wings, holding them until the hunters returned. Empty now, but recently used — feathers on the ground, a few drops of blood, a torn wing. My hands shook with anger, not fear. These were my birds, the ones I’d watched, cared for. My friends.
Then I heard voices. Male voices, laughing, approaching from the east, confident and careless. I hid behind thick bushes, heart pounding, phone ready to record. Two men, carrying bags and tools, walked directly to the net. They began setting it up again, talking about prices, buyers, about “stupid birds” that flew into their traps, about the “easy money” this season.
I wanted to confront them, to tear down their nets. But I was alone, unarmed, sixteen years old, a boy in a vast wetland. I recorded their conversation, careful to stay hidden, capturing their words, their plans, their faces. One man looked directly at my bush. I stopped breathing and became stone. He looked away, said something about a deer. They left at noon, taking the net, unaware.
I emerged, legs weak, and called the society’s emergency line. “We need to act fast,” I said, my voice steady despite shaking hands. “They’re coming back tonight. I have evidence. I know their route.”

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】Paragraph 1
By evening, a team of five had gathered in the wetland. Equipped with professional tools and police assistance, we hid quietly in the dark reeds, waiting patiently for the illegal hunters. As night fell, the two men reappeared sneakily, carrying new nets and preparing to set traps again. Having grasped their every illegal move and conversation, we immediately sprang out. Caught off guard, the hunters had no chance to escape. With solid video and audio evidence, they were arrested on the spot, ending their harmful behavior.
Paragraph 2
Weeks later, I received a letter from the Bird Protection Society. In the letter, I was highly praised for my bravery, careful observation and sense of responsibility. I was awarded an honorary medal for protecting migratory birds. This experience taught me that wildlife protection is never an easy task. Even as a teenager, I can make a difference. I will stick to volunteer work, guard the wetland and protect those lovely flying creatures with persistent efforts.

Our bodies operate on a natural 24-hour cycle known as the circadian rhythm (生物节律), which regulates our sleep-wake patterns. This internal clock is influenced by light exposure, and when it gets dark, our brains release melatonin (褪黑素), a hormone which helps us feel sleepy. ____16____ To ensure a good night’s sleep, here are some important tips for you.
Maintain a consistent wake-up time and bedtime. ____17____ By waking up at the same time each morning and going to bed at the same time every night, you train your body’s internal clock. This routine helps stabilize your circadian rhythm that governs your rest.
____18____ At the end of a long workday, it’s appealing to turn to that late afternoon coffee to power you through. However, caffeine has a long half-life, meaning it can stay in your system for up to six hours, so resist the urge to have sodas, coffees, and teas later in the day.
Exercise daily. Exercise is a powerful way to prevent many health problems. It also improves sleep quality. Research shows that working out in the morning or afternoon can help you sleep better at night. ____19____
Lower the lights before bedtime. About an hour before sleep, soften the lights in your environment, which can improve the ease with which you fall asleep. While it’s important to stick to these habits, don’t be too hard on yourself if you occasionally break the routine. ____20____ However, maintaining these practices most of the time will significantly improve your sleep quality.
A. Avoid stimulants after mid-day.
