Gossip is the information passed from one person to another about other people’s lives. You may think gossip is awful. Even the dictionary suggests that it is often unkind or untrue, but this common idea is unreasonable.
Firstly, a study by Robbins and Karan shows that gossip is common but much of it is just people sharing information. For their study, 467 people’s conversations were recorded. Robbins and Karan found that, on average, these people gossiped for 52 minutes a day, with 75% of the time spent communicating non-evaluative (非评价性的) information. Only about 14 % of the gossip was thought harmful, a much smaller percentage (百分比) than the common idea suggests, although to be fair, that was almost double the percentage of positive (积极的) gossip.
Scientists consider gossip to be an important reason why people in the old times were able to stay alive. It helped spread important news, and it also provided information about who was trustworthy (值得信任的) and who might not work well with others in a group. It allowed humans to build small communities with those who could be trusted, ensuring a greater chance of living. Today, it seems that not much has changed. Gossip still allows us to develop relationships and find out who we can work with best. Gossip also explains the rules of our society. When we hear someone criticize (批评) a person’s behaviour, it is obvious (明显的) that such behaviour is unacceptable and should not be copied. That’s not to say we should pay attention to everything we hear, but it gives us direction.
Of course, these days, our world is changing the nature of gossip. Our networks are now larger, and some gossip can spread like wildfire. And problems come up when gossip includes untrue information. This kind of gossip can destroy people’s lives.
So scientists say that it’s important to share information that can’t hurt others. If we fail to do this, people will see us as someone who can’t be trusted and may even avoid us. Similarly, gossiping to improve one’s own place in society is unacceptable. It’s best to share information that may act as a warning to others or encourage them to behave better. It’s these things that normally push people together rather than make them turn away from each other.
24. What’s probably the percentage of positive gossip in Robbins and Karan’s study?
A. 75%. B. 8%. C. 25%. D. 14%.
25. What can we learn from paragraph 3?
A. People who gossip a lot in a group are always welcome.
B. People who like gossiping can work well together in a group.
C. In the past, people who liked gossiping were not trustworthy.
D. Gossip helps build relationships today as well as in the past.
26. Which of the following does the writer probably agree with?
A. Gossiping is commonly thought kind and true.
B. Gossip as a warning may destroy people’s lives.
C. Gossiping to move up in society should be avoided.
D. Gossip pushes people to turn away from each other.
【答案】24. B 25. D 26. C

C
When John was driving to work, someone suddenly cut him off in traffic. He screamed and yelled angrily at the driver. The driver, having a bad morning, shouted back in anger as well. All of us, sometimes, at least overreact to small things, but the reality is that it’s not worth it. Overreacting can lead to creating a bigger issue or accident. Stress in our lives can create the conditions for us to overreact. But even though doing so might let out one’s anger in the moment, it doesn’t solve the true source of the stress. All it does is to create more anxiety.
Listen, it’s totally okay to feel your emotions and want to express them sometimes, but real issues start to arise when we react much more than necessary. When you overreact, it might be a sign that there are other, deeper problems you aren’t dealing with, which are called emotional triggers (诱因). Everyone has emotional triggers and here are some common ones: events that repeat maddening experiences from one’s past, situations where one feels a sense of disrespect, and moments when one’s loved ones get harmed.
If we know what our triggers are, we can learn to be more in control of ourselves. Personally, I overreact whenever I work hard on something but someone is not pleased with it. I feel my ability is under attack and become defensive (防御的) right away. But then I see that my anger comes from always pushing myself to be perfect and being afraid of others’ bad words. Deep down, I feel tired and the sense of unfairness (不公平) is killing me. It may be hard for some to understand how the feeling of not being valued can drain those people who get energy from knowing their efforts are valued. Knowing this about myself, I become more aware of my reactions and try to respond to people more calmly when they offer criticism (批评), which turns out to draw me closer to others. Therefore, when you’re triggered, keep breathing deeply and cool down. Think about what just happened calmly by bringing yourself closer to truth and think about how other people might feel about things. Overreactions sometimes happen when we get over-focused on ourselves and our own emotions. Remember, no one gets a perfect life.
If you aren’t totally aware of what your triggers are, it might help to reflect on the past week and all the times when something makes you sad. Understand the things that bother you the most and take action.
So when you get annoyed over little things, take a moment to think calmly about what triggers you and try the above tips. By practicing, you can surely hold your temper when you are about to get mad next time. And one day you might find yourself among a closer circle.
27. Who probably shares the same emotional trigger as the writer?
A. Lily, who overreacted when she heard bad comments on her report.
B. Peter, who overreacted when his classmates joked about his parents.
C. Ann, who overreacted when she was invited to play the game she hated.
D. Mike, who overreacted when someone ran into him and refused to say “sorry”.
28. What does the word “drain” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Look forward. B. Lose heart. C. Improve oneself. D. Keep practising.
29. Which of the following would the writer most probably agree with?
A. It’s necessary to overreact sometimes because it can make people feel calm.
B. It’s common for people who care more about those around them to overreact.
C. Avoiding criticism is helpful for people to keep calm and prevent overreaction.
D. Finding emotional triggers helps manage overreactions and improve relationships.
30. Which of the following would be the best title for the text?
A. Overreaction: A Guide to Perfect Emotional Control.
B. Overreaction: A Terrible Way to Deal with Criticism.
C. Overreaction: Knowing Triggers and Finding Calm.
D. Overreaction: Managing Anger and Preventing Stress.
【答案】27. A 28. B 29. D 30. C

根据第三段“Personally, I overreact whenever I work hard on something but someone is not pleased with it.”可知,作者的情绪诱因是自己付出努力完成的成果得不到他人认可、收到负面评价时就会过激反应,对比选项,A选项中Lily听到针对自己报告的负面评价时过激反应,与作者的诱因一致。

“You don’t understand me! I wish I had a different mother!” Jiafen shouted. Her mother replied, “I’m just trying to look out for you! Why can’t you listen?” Jiafen couldn’t stand it anymore. “I’m leaving!” she cried and rushed out.
Walking through the streets, Jiafen’s strong feelings slowly gave way to a more basic need: food. She stopped near a small noodle stall (摊子), drawn by the nice smell of freshly cooked food.
The stall owner noticed her. He called out with a big smile, “Miss, would you like some noodles?” Jiafen hesitated, her cheeks turned red with shame. “I... I forgot to bring money,” she said softly.
He waved her over, “Don’t worry. Come sit down.”
Full of gratitude (感激), Jiafen took a seat. Soon, a bowl of noodles was served, along with a few simple dishes. As she took her first bite, the warmth of the food touched her. Tears began to run down.
“Miss, are you all right?” the owner asked.
“I’m just ...” Jiafen said. “We don’t know each other, yet you were kind enough to cook for me. But earlier today, I fought with Mom. She told me not to come back. You showed me more kindness.”
The owner then said, “Miss, I only made you one bowl of noodles, and you feel so thankful. Your mother has cooked for you and cared for you for more than ten years. How could you not feel even more thankful to her?”
Jiafen was shocked. A single bowl of noodles from a stranger had moved her to tears—but what about the countless meals her mother had made?
She finished eating and took a deep breath. It was time to go home and say the words she had long taken for granted (理所当然): Mom, I’m sorry. I was wrong.
As she neared her house, she saw her mother outside, scanning the street anxiously. Her face was drawn with worry, but when she saw Jiafen, it lit up.
“Fen, hurry home!” she called out. “I’ve already cooked dinner. If you don’t eat soon, it’ll get cold.” Suddenly, tears filled Jiafen’s eyes again—not from hunger or shame, but from love.
