Wan Hu's curiosity pushed him to act, even when it was hard.
Today, his story reminds us:Curiosity makes impossible things possible
In 15th-century China, a man named Wanhu dreamed of flying.
He attached 47 rockets to a wooden chair. He sat down and lit the fuses. There was a huge burst of smoke and fire.
The chair lifted off briefly into the sky.Wanhu became the first person to try rocket-powered flight.
Today, we remember him as a pioneer of space exploration.
Look at the pictures and answer the questions. Use the words and expressions to help you.

Think and share
Pre-writing
1 Do you think inventors could work without curiosity?
Why or why not?
No. I think inventors cannot work without curiosity.
According to the passage, Benjamin Franklin researched electricity and risked flying a kite in a storm because he was curious about its nature. Wan Hu invented and tested the "flying chair" because his curiosity about space overcame his fear of danger. Zhang Heng spent years studying the sky and earth because he was curious about how the world moves.
Think and share
Pre-writing
2 What are you most curious about?
I'm most curious about space robots. Like Wan Hu, I wonder if robots could build houses on Mars. I will learn engineering to discover new ways.
Learning to think for question 1
You can consider these questions: What famous inventors do you know? What role does curiosity play in creating their inventions?
Write an example about the power of curiosity.
5
While-writing
Step 1
What do you think about the power of curiosity? Write one sentence to express your opinion.
eg: Many great inventions in history are the result of people’s curiosity.
Write an example about the power of curiosity.
5
While-writing
Find an example to support your opinion. Organise your ideas with the help of the following questions.
My idea:
___________
Step 2
Curiosity brings new discoveries.
Who is the inventor?
What was he / she curious about?
What did he / she do out of curiosity?
What did he / she achieve?
How did he / she influence the world?
Write an example about the power of curiosity.
5
While-writing
As Albert Einstein said, "I am only passionately curious." History proves curiosity brings new discoveries. Curiosity helps us find amazing things.
Benjamin Franklin is a great example. He was curious about the nature of electricity and did research by flying a kite in a storm. His curiosity led to the lightning rod—a new discovery protecting buildings worldwide. Similarly, Marie Curie was curious about mysterious rays. She stuck to her research for years, testing over 4,000 materials. This brought the discovery of radium, which advanced cancer treatment.
Every great invention begins with a curious mind! Like Jacques Cousteau claimed, "Curiosity is the key to nature’s keyhole." We can change the world.
Write an example about the power of curiosity.

While-writing
Step 4
Check. Did you:
☐ include introduction, main body and conclusion?
☐ use the words and expressions from the reading passage?
☐ give your opinion about the power of curiosity?
Share your passage with the class.
Step 5
Post-writing
1.What is your dream?
Discuss and share
3.What should you do to realize your dream?
2.What can you learn from these inventors?
My dream is to be a doctor.
Never give up./Be curious and keep learning./
Think creatively to solve problems.
Make a plan with small steps./Start learning the skills you need./Work hard and keep trying.
