Passage 1
(25-26 九年级上・江苏盐城大丰区・期中)
Tim had always struggled with his weight. At school, his classmates would call him “Big Tim”. Every day, he wished he could be like other kids, running fast and playing sports easily, but that always seemed out of reach.
One day, a group of his classmates decided to play a trick on him. They secretly entered him for the school’s long-distance race. They thought it would be fun to watch him fail.
On the race day, as Tim was about to join his classmates to watch the race in the stands, he saw some of them holding posters of his face with big words “The Big Runner” and “Go Tim”. He realized he was tricked into the race. He froze there, helpless.
The race started, and to everyone’s surprise, Tim began to jog. It was not fast. He kept moving, though he could hardly keep up with the other runners. His legs burned with each step, but he didn’t stop.
As the race went on, something changed. A few students started cheering for him. “Come on, Tim” they shouted. Their encouragement made Tim feel lighter. It wasn’t about winning anymore; it was about proving to himself that he could finish.
By the time he reached the final lap, Tim was tired out, but he pushed through. As he crossed the finish line, he fell to the ground, completely out of breath. His classmates, who had once laughed at him, were now clapping and shouting his name.

Just as they were still talking about this, Mandy caught up with them. “What are you guys talking about?” she asked.
“Jackson just fell and hurt his knee,” said Eva.
“Was he bleeding?” asked Mandy.
The story began to spread. Within an hour, Kevin heard the whole story. “Jackson got hit by a car on his way home. There was blood everywhere, and he was sent to the hospital.”
That night, Oliver got more information. “Jackson broke his leg and his head was hurt. He doesn’t even remember anything about the accident! He won’t be at school for at least four weeks.”
The next morning, everybody at school was talking about Jackson.
“Lucky Jackson,” Maya said. “He gets to miss so much school.”
“The poor guy can’t even move, and you think he’s lucky?” said Kathy.
Bob shook his head sadly, “He was so good at soccer—what if he can never play again?”
“Maybe we should send him a card or visit him in the hospital,” suggested Bill.
“Will he even remember us?” asked Gina. “I can’t believe he lost his memory!” Lisa cried.

Passage 3
(25-26 九年级上・江苏泰州姜堰区・期中)
It was an unusual day when our teacher announced a speech competition in our class. Most of the students preferred to avoid speaking in public, but this time, every student in our grade was required to take part.
I felt nervous — delivering a speech in front of the whole class seemed impossible, especially since I had never done anything like this before. While I was wondering whether to give up or not, my English teacher noticed my hesitation and encouraged me to try. She said, “Don’t fear mistakes. Just speak from the heart.” “Believe in yourself, and you can make it.”
Her kind words gave me the courage to make an important decision. I would have a go, no matter how scared I felt.
For the next two weeks, I worked hard, practicing my speech every day after school. I wanted to make sure I could present my thoughts clearly and correctly. My parents praised my determination, though they reminded me that success wasn’t just about winning. It was about doing my best.
On the competition day, my hands shook as I stood on stage. To my surprise, as I began speaking, the audience was actually listening carefully. When I finished, several classmates came up to praise me. Later, when the judges announced the results, I couldn’t believe it. I had won the second place!
This experience taught me some valuable lessons. Encouragement from others can help us achieve things we thought were impossible. Sometimes we need to push through our fears to discover our true abilities. Now, whenever I feel nervous about speaking up, I remember that unusual day — the day I learned that every challenge is an opportunity for growth.

Passage 1
When hiking in Scotland, I have, from time to time, come across remote stone buildings with a mark of the Mountain Bothies Association (or MBA) on the doors. They look very welcoming especially if the weather is coming in. Can I use them without permission?
— David
Dear David,
The main aim of the Mountain Bothies Association (MBA) is to keep simple shelters in faraway areas. These shelters are for anyone who loves wild and quiet places.
Do you love such places? If you open the unlocked door of one of these buildings, you will find a shelter that keeps out the rain and wind. You can use it freely. There is no electricity or running water inside, but there is probably a fire or a small cooker. There may also be a few beds or simple platforms for sleeping.
If you’re very lucky, someone might have left some coal or wood for you. If you’re even luckier, another hiker who wants to get out of the rain and sleep in a dry place tonight might still be there, tending a big fire and offering you a hot drink.
There are more than 100 such shelters in Scotland, northern England and Wales. No two of them are the same. You don’t need to book a spot, and you don’t need to pay any money. You can just go there, and be ready to share the shelter with other people who come.
Those shelters exist because MBA volunteers work very hard. You don’t have to pay, but you should tidy up after yourself — that’s like your “payment” for using the shelter.
There are a few rules, also called “The Bothy Code”. All these rules are simple ways to show respect to the shelter, other visitors and the environment. They come from an agreement between the MBA and the people who own the land.
These bothies are very special to me. I have spent at least one night in every single one of them. They aren’t built fast to be bothies. Each one has a long history — its story started long before it became a shelter for hikers. They are part of our history.
Next time you find an old house with a round mark on its door. Go into that house and talk to the strangers there. Now you’re part of those old stories. If you want to help make more stories, you can also be an MBA volunteer.
1.What is the MBA’s main job?
A.To guide hikers in the mountains.
B.To keep simple shelters in remote areas.
C.To build new houses for hikers.
D.To collect money for mountain villages.
2.What can we know about the bothies?
A.They have electricity and hot water.
B.You need to book before using them.
C.They are all built in the same style.
D.You can use them for free.
3.What should you do after using a bothy?
A.Leave some money. B.Tidy up the place.

Passage 2
(25-26 九年级上・江苏南通海安市・期中)
In Yangla, a remote town located in the mountains of Yunnan’s Diqing Tibetan autonomous prefecture (over 3,000 meters above sea level), 32-year-old Doctor Nasheng devotes herself to caring for more than 5,400 villagers.
Nasheng studied Tibetan medicine at Qinghai University. Her love for this field started in childhood. She was always curious about Chinese medicine. But what truly pushed her was seeing her fellow villagers struggle with healthcare. “They once had to travel far to see doctors inland. Long trips, language barriers, and cultural differences made it even harder,” she said, adding that many elderly villagers only speak Tibetan. This made her decide to learn Tibetan medicine and return to help her hometown.
She joined Yangla’s town health center in September 2021. Although her hometown Yunling is in the same county, getting to Yangla takes a tiring 7-8 hour drive — crossing Baima Snow Mountain and following a winding path along the Jinsha River. She lives in a simple room inside the hospital ward, and the town only has one barbecue restaurant for entertainment. But she never thinks of giving up.
Yangla’s villages spread across over 1,000 square kilometers, so the health center holds monthly mobile free clinics. On Nasheng’s first clinic trip, she and her team drove 5 hours, then met a mudslide. They had to carry all medical supplies over the mountain on foot.
After treating an elderly patient who worried about getting follow-up care, she suggested building a small health station. With local government support, one opened in June 2022, making it easier for villagers to see doctors. In 2023, she also helped set up a herbal bath room to ease villagers’ rheumatism and joint pain.
Nasheng keeps improving her skills. In 2024, she trained in Tibet to learn therapies like bloodletting and Tibetan stick therapy.
Villagers love her: an 80-year-old gave her rare fruit (picked from a lower-altitude town), and last Spring Festival, they invited her team to a warm Tibetan party.
Looking ahead, Nasheng wants to study for a master’s degree to learn more acupuncture. “But no matter where I go,” she said, “I’ll always come back — this is my home.”

This is a tale of a lonely old woman. She lived in the white North. There, the night is long in winter and the day is long in summer. The old woman lived alone in a small village. The villagers took good care of her, but she was still unhappy. She wanted a child of her own.
One winter day, she walked out and saw a small white animal on the ice. It was a baby bear. The bear looked small and felt very cold. The old woman spoke softly to the bear, “Poor little thing. Come with me.” Then she carried him home.
Inside her house, the old woman held the bear close until he was warm. She touched him gently and sang to him softly. He felt comfortable in her arms. From that day, when the old woman ate, she fed the little bear from her hand. When she slept, the bear slept beside her. They were a family now. The village children loved the bear too. They played together.
Time passed quickly and the bear grew big and strong. One day, some villagers said to him, “Little Bear, go hunting with us. We’ll teach you how to hunt.” The bear followed them. Soon the bear became a better hunter than the villagers. When the weather was bad, everyone stayed indoors. Then the bear went out into the snow and brought home enough food for the whole village. The old woman felt proud of him.
One day, some villagers said to the old woman, “The bear has grown big and strong enough. He is a good hunter now. You’d better let him go back to the wild.”
In the following days, the old woman was quiet, thinking. She thought aloud, “The bear belongs to the wild. I should let him go.”
Finally, she said to the bear, “It’s time for you to leave. Be safe. Be free.” She put her arms around his neck. Her tears ran into his fur. She was heartbroken. The bear walked slowly away from her and looked back again and again. Then he disappeared. When darkness fell, the old woman still stood there. Once more, she was alone.

Passage 2
(25-26 九年级上・江苏无锡宜兴市・期中)
Have you ever heard of upcycling? When you upcycle an object, you are probably doing something different. You can simply refashion it. For example, you might make a bag out of an old T-shirt.
Upcycling is different from recycling. Recycling breaks things down into materials to be used again. Upcycling keeps the materials in their original form and makes them into something new and useful. It is a creative way to cut down on waste.
Upcycling isn’t a new idea. Some of the best examples of modern-day upcycling come from the old times. In those days, things were repurposed over and over until they were no longer useful. Upcycling is a way of life.
You might think upcycling is hard to do. In fact, anyone can do it. There are plenty of easy upcycling ideas online. For example, you can turn old jars into desk organizers. You can cut up old jeans to make pencil cases. You can even use old tea bags to make paper.
Grace, a young woman from the UK, takes used tea bags and turns them into dresses, shoes and even hats. She dries the tea bags, cuts them up and glues them onto fabric. It takes a long time, but her creations are beautiful and eco-friendly.
In fact, whether you create objects from old things or buy ready-made products from upcycled things, both ways are helpful for the environment and can bring you something that’s both beautiful and useful. Get started today!

A.Throw away useless things.
B.Make something new from old things.

Passage 3
(25-26 九年级上・江苏南京秦淮区・期中)
Saving Urban Green Spaces
In many big cities around the world, green spaces like parks and community gardens are disappearing. Skyscrapers and shopping malls are being built in their place, leaving little room for trees, grass and flowers. However, these green spaces are more important than people might think — they play a key role in protecting the urban natural environment.
Urban green spaces help improve air quality. Trees and plants absorb harmful gases like carbon dioxide and release oxygen, making the air cleaner to breathe. For example, a single mature tree can absorb up to 48 pounds of carbon dioxide each year. In cities with lots of green spaces, the air is often fresher, and cases of respiratory illnesses are lower than in cities with few plants.
These green spaces also help reduce the “urban heat island” effect. Concrete and asphalt in cities absorb a lot of heat from the sun, making cities much hotter than surrounding rural areas. But trees and grass can cool the air through transpiration — they release water vapor, which lowers the temperature. Studies show that parks can be 3—7 degrees cooler than nearby streets, providing a comfortable place for people to escape the summer heat.
Besides, urban green spaces are home to many small animals and insects. Birds build nests in trees, squirrels collect food from plants, and bees pollinate flowers. Without these green spaces, many urban wildlife species would lose their habitats and even face extinction. Protecting green spaces means protecting the biodiversity of the city.
Unfortunately, many cities still don’t pay enough attention to saving green spaces. Some people think building more buildings will bring more economic benefits, but they ignore the long-term harm to the environment. To change this, citizens can join local environmental groups to protest against the destruction of green spaces. They can also plant trees in their neighborhoods or take part in community garden projects. Governments should also make stricter rules to protect existing green spaces and plan new ones when building new areas.
Saving urban green spaces is not just about keeping cities beautiful — it’s about protecting the natural environment and ensuring a healthy life for people and wildlife. Every small green area counts, and everyone can do their part to save them.
1.Why are urban green spaces important for air quality?
A.They produce carbon dioxide.
B.They absorb harmful gases and release oxygen.
C.They make cities look more beautiful.
D.They provide places for people to exercise.
2.What causes the “urban heat island” effect?
A.Too many trees and grass in cities.
B.Concrete and asphalt absorbing sun heat.
C.Parks being cooler than streets.
D.Water vapor lowering the temperature.
3.What can citizens do to save green spaces?
A.Build more shopping malls.
B.Cut down trees in neighborhoods.
C.Join environmental groups and plant trees.
D.Make stricter rules for building.
4.What is the main idea of the passage?
A.Urban green spaces are disappearing fast.
B.Urban green spaces are important and need protection.

Passage 3
(25-26 九年级上・江苏泰州姜堰区・期中)
The list for the sixth-grade basketball team was announced online. I was a little worried because I knew how much my 12-year-old son wanted to make the team.
I read the list of 13 names for a few minutes. Finally, I had to tell myself that my son wasn’t on the list. I felt sad. I wished it would be about victory. Like every parent, I love to say, “You did it!”
Instead, I had to give my son a speech to comfort him, which was a lot less exciting, but probably more important. It was not really a speech, but a further discussion about spirit, courage and not giving up.
Although it was painful for me to see myself so disappointed, I needed to keep my own feelings in check. Sure, I wanted to call the coach to say he made a big mistake, but I would not. Nor would I let my son know that I thought it unfair. Instead, I put my own feelings aside and let my son have a safe place to calm down.
And when he was done, I needed to encourage him to continue to improve skills. That day was a loss, but the only way to get another win was to put on his trainers and get on the basketball court again.
My son is 15 years old now. And, after being cut from the team for three years in a row, he got to see his name on the list for the high school team.
Last week, my husband and I watched him play in his first game. The smile on his face when he made his first shot is something I will never forget. After so many failures, it was a win that didn’t come easy for him. And it wouldn’t have happened if he had given up trying.

While at college, he chose botany. He met a professor who was an expert in ecology. He told Paul it would take about twenty thousand years to make that wasteland green again.

Passage 3

Soon the bear became a better hunter than the villagers. When the weather was bad, everyone stayed indoors. Then the bear went out into the snow and brought home enough food for the whole village.
