Nature’s Warnings
When the sky suddenly turns dark and the wind is strong, watch out! A dangerous storm might be coming. Storms are scary. Watch for flashes of lightning. Listen for thunder. If nature sends these warnings, don’t wait for rain. Act right away to keep safe.
Safety Steps
At the first flash of lightning, quickly get inside a building or a car. Do not go into a shed (棚) for protection. It is not closed like a building, so it is not safe.
Even after you are indoors, be careful. It is not smart to go near doors and windows. They can blow in or break. A room with no windows is the safest place to be.
Do not wash your hands during a storm. Do not use anything that runs on electricity either. Water and electrical lines are like roads for lightning. Even if you really want to play computer games, don’t! It is better to be bored than to risk getting hurt. Try reading a book instead. Reading is more fun than playing computer games.
If you can’t get to somewhere safe, stay out in the open. You may feel safe under a tree, but that is not a good place to be. Lightning is pulling toward tall poles and trees. Stay down in an open space and cover your ears to protect them. Loud thunder can damage your hearing.
Lightning Strikes
Lightning does not strike people very often. It is not likely that you will ever see that happen. If you do, call 120. Only trained emergency workers should care for a person who has been hit by lightning.
If you follow these rules, you should stay safe during a storm.
( ) 21. From Paragraph 1, we learn that ________.
A. storms are frightening and harmful
B. storms often come without warnings
C. people should wait and watch lightning
D. people should take action after the storm
( ) 22. The underlined word “It” in Paragraph 2 probably means ________.
A. a building B. a car C. a room D. a shed
( ) 23. During a storm you had better ________.
A. use a computer for a while B. listen for thunder by a window
C. leave the room and stay out D. find a closed or an open place

The village of Greenhaven suffered from drought (旱灾) for years. Rivers ran dry and crops failed. While most villagers gave up hope, ten-year-old Larry had an idea from his science class: to build a “dew trap (露水收集器)”.
He learned how desert beetles (甲虫) collect drinking water from fog (雾气) on their backs. Larry wondered, “If a beetle can do it, why can’t we?” He used an old plastic bottle and a mesh screen (网筛) to make his first trap. Every morning before school, he checked his trap.
For weeks, only a few drops appeared. “Just a toy,” some villagers laughed. Larry began to lose hope. Yet, he remembered some words: Nature has already solved many problems. We just need to learn to look closely. He learned from the beetles again and decided to make his trap’s surface much larger.
One evening, a thick fog came down. Larry placed his trap on the hill. It was a piece of plastic held up by a wooden structure. The next morning, he found not just drops, but a small, clear pool of water. A great sense of achievement filled his heart. Word spread quickly. Soon, many villagers joined him to build bigger traps. Within a month, they collected enough water for their gardens.
Thanks to Larry, Greenhaven was green again. Larry learned that the greatest strength lies not in fighting nature, but in learning from it.

( ) 25. How did Larry’s feeling change in the story?
A. Angry→proud→hopeful. B. Confident→afraid→relaxed.

Jason and his father were going to the supermarket by car to buy some apples. It had been an unusual day. The sky was dark but there were few clouds. As they drove up the street, they heard a rumbling (隆隆的) sound across the ground.
Jason’s father immediately realized that a tornado (龙卷风) was coming. He stopped the car and told Jason to get out immediately. Jason and his father got out of the car and made their way to the closest building. By this time the wind was blowing harder, and it was hard to see or hear. Debris was falling all over the place. Jason couldn’t see his dad anymore. He also realized that he wasn’t getting to the building fast enough. He was afraid he would be picked up by the wind and thrown into the air.
As he made his way towards the building, he noticed a field to his right. He could see an irrigation ditch (灌溉渠). In a panic, he scrambled (爬) to the ditch and lay flat on the ground. More debris and objects flew overhead. His heart was beating hard, and he was nervous. He had never been in a tornado before.
After a while, the winds died down and the loud roaring sound was gone. Jason slowly lifted his head and nervously looked around. What he saw was a great mess. Jason could hardly recognize the buildings in front of him because of all the damage.
He stood up and with shaky legs walked to the building. Once there, he pushed the door open and went inside. It was a public building owned by the city. It was empty, but Jason could hear noises further inside. He walked into the large room and saw his dad. He ran across the room and gave him a big hug.
“Jason! How are you? I’ve been worried about you!” said his father. “I couldn’t find you anywhere!”
Jason breathed a sigh of relief (松了一口气) and sat down. He did have a story to tell!

② The drone (无人机) is one of them. It can be used to send food, water and important things when a natural disaster happens. Very often the buildings are too dangerous for rescue teams to get in, but they can make the drone fly into the buildings to search for those who are still alive first.

How to keep myself safe
As a teenager, I think it is important for me to keep myself safe from danger.
In my daily life, I always keep in mind that safety comes first. For example, I look both ways before crossing the road. And I seldom go out at night or talk with strangers.
If I am in danger, first of all, I will calm down as soon as possible. Then, I will ask for help. I think calling 110 at once is one of the most helpful ways to save myself.
In a word, I will be able to protect myself with such safety tips in mind.
