At 2 years old, Caitlin Lyons found love at first sight—not with a storybook prince or a celebrity, but with horseback riding. “Once I got on my first horse, I just knew,” says Lyons. “And it didn’t take long for everyone around me to see how serious I was.” She had a riding instructor when she was in elementary school and since then, she has been on horseback more often than on a playground.
As a high school student, Lyons visited the University of Georgia(UGA) after hearing about the school’s competitive equestrian(马术的) team. When she stepped on campus, she once again felt an instant connection. “It was home,” says Lyons. “There’s no other way to describe it. I just knew this was where I was meant to be.”
Attending UGA allowed Lyons to find her path as an outstanding athlete. In 2024, she was named a finalist for the NCAA Woman of the Year Award. She also won the 2022 SEC Reining Rider of the Year and 2024 SEC Equestrian Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
Lyons rides different horses depending on the event and location, but her personal horse, 6-year-old Ava Grace, holds a special place in her heart. “Horseback riding isn’t about jumping on an animal’s back and telling it what to do,” she says. “It’s about connecting. You can’t be in your head or anxious. You have to work together with a thousand pounds of living, breathing animal underneath you and know if they’re nervous or confident or confused.”
While Lyons has a lot of experience working with horses, her passion for animals extends well beyond the riding stables(养马场). She has always wanted to help with the conservation of endangered species. She plans to work as a wildlife technician and eventually transform wildlife conservation at a national level after graduation. Just as she’s learned to build trust and care for horses, Lyons will use that devotion for protecting endangered species and their natural environments.

The first time Davis DeWitt saw the character concept for Newt, he may have thought of an animated(动画的) robot. However, Newt is real—and ready for the big screen. This functional robot was designed and built entirely by DeWitt, a YouTuber.
Newt will star in the upcoming sci-fi adventure The Lightning Code, which follows a teenage inventor who discovers a way to create limitless energy. But after a pack of bad guys steal his invention, the teen joins forces with friends and a little robot to stop them from turning his work into a weapon(武器).
To meet the needs of the movie’s storyline, Newt couldn’t just look good; it has to act, move, and feel like a living character. After rounds of brainstorming, the team settled on its look. With the digital design locked in, DeWitt 3D-printed the parts and carefully hand-sanded each piece to smooth perfection. To give Newt a lived-in look, DeWitt used special weathering techniques which gave the robot a worn appearance—making it feel like part of the real world, not just a fresh-off-the-shelf object.
The appearance of Newt is only half the story. To perform in the movie, the robot needed working electronics inside. At the heart of the system is a microcontroller board, which controls Newt’s movements and functions. The robot includes a motor driver, a powerful projector light, a rechargeable battery, etc. All these elements are essential for making Newt a responsive, real-time actor on set.
“The most difficult part wasn’t building Newt, but its stunt double(替身),” DeWitt admits. To handle challenging treatment during action scenes, he had to make a second robot—a less functional one designed to survive falls and hits. While the main version of Newt shines on screen, its “twin robot” ensures the production can film risky scenes without damaging the hero.
Newt represents a mix of cinematic storytelling and hands-on engineering; instead of relying on digital effects, the filmmakers chose an actual robot. This approach not only brings more verisimilitude to the movie but also demonstrates the power of DIY robotics.
5. What is the main plot of The Lightning Code?
A. An attempt to prevent a weapon theft.
B. A robot’s journey to becoming a hero.
C. A conflict between humans and robots.
D. A teenager’s efforts to protect his creation.
6. What can give Newt a realistic appearance?
A. Aging effects. B. Digital designs.
C. Smooth surfaces. D. Robotic features.
7. What can be inferred about the operation of Newt?
A.It’s controlled by human actors.
B. It’s performed using digital effects.
C. It’s the teamwork of various parts.
D. It’s powered by natural resources.
8. Which word can best replace the underlined word “verisimilitude” in the last paragraph?
A. Heroism. B. Realism.
C. Excitement. D. Expectation.

According to Dr Nihara Krause, learning adaptive strategies is hard in adolescence(青春期) because there’s so much going on physically and __1__(emotional). However, parents can help.
For example,__2__(image) of perfection have an impact on teenagers.“A huge resilience(适应力) factor is self-compassion and self-acceptance, but that doesn’t happen in teens because part of teen identity is not to be different,” says Krause, who suggests celebrating difference and trying the “toothbrush report”. “When they brush their teeth in the morning, encourage them to think about something positive about __3__(they) or something positive they’re going to do. When __4__(brush) their teeth at night, they review the day and think, ‘I’m __5__(please) that the good thing happened.’”
A significant factor in developing resilience is the ability __6__(understand) emotions and how to express and regulate them. “Teens’ brains are still developing, so they have peaks of emotions,” says Krause. “Help them understand it’s OK to be hurt. But the right response is not causing the same degree of hurt to __7__ other person. Help them speak out their feelings __8__ understand why it happened. They need help going from thinking it’s the end of the world __9__ being able to think differently about it and develop some sense of __10__(confident).”

根据第一段中的“At 2 years old, Caitlin Lyons found love at first sight ... ‘Once I got on my first horse, I just knew,’ says Lyons(两岁时,Lyons一见钟情——不是对故事书中的王子,也不是对名人,而是对骑马。Lyons说:‘我第一次骑上马背时,就知道这就是我热爱的事物’)”可知,Lyons对骑马的热爱源于她第一次骑马的经历。
2. 答案 C
解析 推理判断题。根据第二段中的“When she stepped on campus, she once again felt an instant connection.‘... I just knew this was where I was meant to be.’(当她踏入校园时,她再次感受到一种瞬间的共鸣。她说:‘这里就像家一样。没有其他方式可以形容它。我知道这就是我注定要去的地方’)”可知,这种像家一样的感觉是一种归属感,对应C项。
3. 答案 C
解析 细节理解题。根据倒数第二段中Lyons所说的“Horseback riding isn’t about jumping on an animal’s back ... know if they’re nervous or confident or confused(骑马不是跳上动物的背并告诉它们该做什么,而是关于建立联系。你不能只沉浸在自己的想法或者焦虑当中,你必须与你身下重达一千磅、有生命、会呼吸的动物合作,并且了解它们是紧张、自信还是困惑)”可知,Lyons强调骑马不是简单地骑在马背上指挥马,而是与马建立联系,对应C项。
4. 答案 B
解析 细节理解题。根据最后一段中的“She has always wanted to help with ... transform wildlife conservation at a national level after graduation (Lyons一直想帮助保护濒危物种。她计划毕业后成为一名野生动物技术人员,并最终在国家层面改变野生动物保护状况)”可知,Lyons未来的目标是支持国家层面的野生动物保护。D项“为赛马的福利发声”过于狭隘,Lyons未来的计划是保护广义的野生动物,不只是赛马。
