A Stay safe during typhoon season
Summer is the typhoon season in many parts of China. Warm sunny days can suddenly turn into stormy ones when a typhoon comes. Knowing what a typhoon is and how to stay safe helps you get through the season with less worry.
What makes a typhoon?
A typhoon is a very big and powerful storm that forms over the warm ocean water of the tropics (热带). When warm wet air over the water rises, cooler air takes its place. The cooler air then gets warm and starts to rise again, This cycle causes huge storm clouds to form. If there is enough warm water, the cycle continues and the storm grows into a typhoon. This summer, typhoons like “Saudel” and “Bavi” have come one after another, bringing heavy rain and strong winds to many coastal areas.
Typhoon Formation Diagram
How to stay safe during a typhoon
Listen to weather reports and follow local warnings.
Stay indoors and keep away from windows—strong winds may break them.
Prepare enough food, water, and a flashlight.
If floodwaters enter your home, move to a higher place at once.
After the typhoon passes, do not go outside until it is reported safe-winds may pick up again.
“I always check the weather before going out.”
I love summer, but I know typhoons can come at any time. I always watch the weather report in the morning. When a typhoon is coming, I stay inside, close all windows, and prepare food and water. It’s not fun to stay indoors, but it keeps me safe.

【解析】
【导语】本文是一篇说明文,主要介绍了台风的形成原因、台风季节的安全注意事项,并结合一位15岁学生的亲身经历,讲述了如何在台风期间保持安全。
【1题详解】
根据文章“What makes a typhoon?”部分中的“When warm wet air over the water rises, cooler air takes its place... This cycle causes huge storm clouds to form.”可知,当水面上方的暖湿空气上升时,冷空气会取而代之,这个循环导致了巨大的风暴云形成。因此,导致台风形成的是海洋上方上升的暖湿空气。
【2题详解】
根据文章右侧Lin的自述“When a typhoon is coming, I stay inside, close all windows, and prepare food and water.”

It was a hot August evening. A 16-year-old boy sat alone on the edge of a watermelon field, tired and dusty. After a whole day of carrying melons, he took out a worn notebook and began to write. His pen moved slowly, but his heart was heavy.
He wrote about his mother—a woman he had not seen for nearly ten years. He could only remember her thin face and slightly broken teeth. He wrote about his own foolishness: skipping classes, getting into fights, and wasting over 10,000 yuan of his father’s money on games. He did not make excuses. He just wrote the truth.
Later, someone posted his essay online. It spread like wildfire. A kind blogger found him and offered to help find his mother. But the boy shook his head firmly. “No,” he said. “I’ll find her myself when I’m ready.”
Weeks later, the blogger managed to reach his mother and read the essay to her over the phone. There was a long silence. Then came her voice, rough but soft: “Tell him don’t smoke, don’t drink, and study hard.”
When the boy heard those words, he stared at the ground for a long time. His eyes were wet, but a tiny smile appeared at the corner of his mouth. He whispered to himself, “She still cares.”

7. What can we learn from the story?
A. It is easy to find someone after ten years.
B. Teenagers should never make mistakes in life.
C. Famous essays are always written by great writers.
D. A mother’s love is often shown through simple words.
【答案】4. A 5. B 6. B 7. D

Most people throw away crab and shrimp shells after eating. Tons of shells end up as waste. But, Dr. Rosa Isela from Mexico and her team have turned the waste shells into a white powder called chitosan. This powder is different from plastic—it breaks down easily in the environment. It is safer and can be used in many ways.
Chitosan helps keep fish and shrimp healthy. Fish farmers raise them in big ponds. Sometimes, harmful bacteria (细菌) grow in the water and make the baby shrimp sick. Chitosan has a positive charge (电荷). Bacteria have a negative charge. When chitosan touches bacteria, it sticks to them like a magnet (磁铁). This kills the bacteria or stops them from growing. Farmers add a little chitosan to the pond water. It kills over 90% of the bad bacteria. As a result, more baby shrimp survive and grow strong.
Chitosan can also help keep fruit fresh. Farmers use it to make a special coating (涂层) that works in three ways. First, it kills bacteria to stop the fruit from going bad. Second, it locks water inside to keep the fruit from getting dry. Third, it slows down the fruit’s breathing, so fruit saves energy and stays fresh longer. This means farmers can sell more fruit and reduce waste.
Chitosan is especially important for cities on the coast. People there, both locals and visitors, eat a lot of seafood, so tons of shells are thrown away every day. Now those shells can be used to make chitosan. In this way, waste becomes something useful. This is a good example of how science can turn a problem into a solution. Chitosan helps people and brings us hope for a greener future.
8. What is chitosan made from?
A. Sea shells. B. Clean water. C. Fresh fruit. D. Plastic waste.
9. According to the text, what are the uses of chitosan?
① It keeps fish healthy. ② It locks water inside fruit.
③ It serves as food for fish. ④ It slows down fruit’s breathing.
A. ①②③ B. ②③④ C. ①②④ D. ①③④
10. Why is chitosan important to cities on the coast?
A. It makes seafood more delicious.
B. It protects the cities’ environment.
C. It brings more visitors to the cities.
D. It creates new jobs for local people.
11. What is the best title for the text?
A. Chitosan: Turn Waste into Worth
B. Chitosan: Enjoy Life with Seafood
C. Chitosan: A Material to Save the Sea
D. Chitosan: A way to Keep Fruit Fresh
【答案】8. A 9. C 10. B 11. A

①A few days ago, a picture went viral on the Internet. It was shared by thousands of people within just a few hours. It showed a mother holding a stack of textbooks for the next term and saying, “I’ve already bought my daughter’s books for Grade 9. We are going to start learning them tomorrow. We can’t afford to lose at the starting line!” This “pre-made” child trend has caused heated discussion among parents and educators.
②Some parents support this practice. They believe that the earlier children start, the better they will understand the knowledge when they learn it in class. They worry that if their children don’t prepare, they will fall behind their classmates.
③However, many educational experts hold a different view. They point out that summer vacation is a valuable time for children to relax, explore hobbies, and develop social skills. Pushing children to learn next term’s content too early may cause them to become tired and lose interest in learning. “Learning is not a race,” said Professor Li. “It’s more like a journey. If you force children to run all the time, they will miss the beautiful views along the way and even refuse to move forward.”
④Many students also express their unhappiness. A 14-year-old boy, Zhang Wei, said, “I finished my summer homework in the first week. Then my mom gave me the new math book. I feel like my vacation has never started. I just want some time to play basketball and hang out with my friends.”
⑤So what should parents do? Some experts suggest a balanced way. Parents can encourage children to read more books or watch some educational videos related to the new term, but they should not push too hard. The most important thing is to help children keep their curiosity and love for learning, which will benefit them in the long run.
12. What is the underlined phrase “went viral” in Paragraph 1 most likely to mean?
A. spread very quickly on the Internet. B. caused a strong disagreement.
C. touched many people’s hearts. D. disappeared without a trace.
13. Which of the following best shows the structure of the passage?
A. ①/②③④/⑤ B. ①②/③④/⑤ C. ①/②/③④⑤ D. ①/②③④⑤
14. What does Professor Li mean by saying “Learning is more like a journey”?
A. Parents should not let children study at all.
B. Students should travel more during vacation.
C. Learning must be completed before the next term.
D. Children should enjoy the process rather than just rush forward.
15. What is the writer’s main purpose in writing this passage?
A. To show that all parents support “pre-made” kids.
B. To prove that summer vacation is useless for students.
C. To encourage parents to buy more textbooks for their children.
D. To discuss whether children should prepare next term’s lessons during vacation.
【答案】12. A 13. A 14. D 15. D
