B In a small village in Minqin, Gansu Province, farmer Pei Aimin has spent more than 30 years growing crops (庄稼), reading and writing. Online, she is better known as “Field Mouse Auntie”. The name came from her love of fairy tales (童话). As a child, Pei loved Hans Christian Andersen’s book Thumbelina. Years later, while working alone in the fields, she often imagined the little girl running into the farm and listening to stories on the farm. “There are so many stories hidden in the fields,” she said. Born into a traditional farming family, Pei left school after junior high and married young, like many women of her age. However, even in the busiest farming seasons, she never stopped reading and writing. She carried paper and pens in her pockets to write down thoughts as she worked. “In the village, people only cared whether the wheat grew well or the sheep were fat enough,” she said. “Nobody thought reading mattered.” Books quietly became her shelter. “When I open a book, my heart calms down,” she said. “If the heart has nowhere to rest, then pick up a book.” In 2011, she started to use social media with the name “Field Mouse Auntie” and began sharing life in the countryside. Her warm and beautiful writings won her readers across China. In 2022, her book Field Mouse Auntie’s Diary came out. Now, Pei still spends her days farming and her nights reading and drawing under the lamp. As elderly villagers pass away and old traditions disappear, she feels more driven to protect their stories. “I feel it’s my responsibility,” she said. “If nobody records these stories, they may disappear forever.” 4. What did Pei imagine about the girl in Thumbelina? A. A girl lived in a city. B. A man worked in fields. C. A girl enjoyed the countryside. D. A man wrote books in the village. 5. What can we know about Pei when she was young? A. Pei loved reading even when she was busy. B. Pei was called “Field Mouse” at school. C. Pei graduated from college and wrote a book. D. Pei got great support from villagers for her reading hobby. 6. What does Pei think she should do according to the last paragraph? A. Make her hometown wealthier. B. Read as many books as possible. C. Carry on the culture of the countryside. D. Teach more people to read and write. 7. What’s the best title of the passage? A. What Life In A Chinese Village Is Like B. Field Mouse Auntie Records Village Life C. Old Traditions Are Disappearing D. Hans Christian Andersen Changed Chinese C People usually think water is the first choice to fight fires. However, water can cause serious mess, and it’s not always easy to get water. Chemicals can have serious health and environmental effects. But what if you could use sound to put out fire? Sonic Fire Tech has a special new technology. It uses low sound waves to stop the chemical reaction of fire. Three things are needed for a fire to burn: heat, fuel (燃料) and oxygen. If we take away one of them, the fire will go out. This technology pushes oxygen away from fuel, so the fire cannot sustain itself. People have studied sound and fire for a very long time. The US Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency spent years studying it in the early 2000s, and researchers have been doing experiments with it for many years. However, the big challenge was using this technology without making too much loud and harmful noise. The company uses infrasound (次声) to solve this problem. These low waves (20hz or lower) cannot be heard by people, but they travel far and work well on small fires. Usual water sprinklers (洒水器) are useless for kitchen oil fires and even make fires bigger, but new sound systems can stop small kitchen fires early. The machines start working when fires are found, and they fight fires without breaking furniture or wetting the floor. Although sound waves can usefully solve home fires, unluckily, they can only work on the small fires, so we probably won’t be seeing the technology used on wildfires or any large fires anytime soon. 8. How does the writer start the text? A. By telling stories. B. By listing numbers. C. By comparing. D. By giving a famous saying. 9. What does underlined word sustain mean? A. Stop. B. Keep. C. Reduce. D. Lift. 10. What is the advantage of the sound fire machines of Sonic Fire Tech? A. They can fight large wildfires in open areas. B. They make loud noise to put out small fires. C. They won’t break furniture when fighting fires. D. They are the first experiments on sound-based fire fighting. 11. What’s the writer’s purpose of writing this text? A. To introduce a new way to put out fires. B. To tell people how to stay safe in a fire. C. To explain why fires are very dangerous. D. To ask people to stop using old fire-fighting tools. C 9. B 10. C 11. 【8题详解】 根据文章第一段“People usually think water is the first choice to fight fires. However, water can cause serious mess, and it’s not always easy to get water. Chemicals can have serious health and environmental effects. But what if you could use sound to put out fire?” 【9题详解】 根据文章第二段“Three things are needed for a fire to burn: heat, fuel and oxygen. If we take away one of them, the fire will go out. This technology pushes oxygen away from fuel, so the fire cannot sustain itself.” 【10题详解】 根据文章第四段“The machines start working when fires are found, and they fight fires without breaking furniture or wetting the floor.” D Scene One (The Horse Problem) Sarai: (tapping Amadore) Easy, boy. Dad says if I can’t put this halter (笼头) on you tomorrow, you must go back to the old farm. I want you to stay with me. Cody: (standing at the door) I know what your problem is. Sarai: (looking back) Who are you? I’m busy. Cody: I’m Cody. We just moved here. I know your problem. Sarai: (unhappy) You don’t know me or my horse. I have ridden horses for twelve years. I know what to do. (Sarai takes a snack and holds it out. Amadore smells it but won’t come near.) Sarai: Maybe tomorrow, Amadore. We have little time left. Scene Two (Another Bad Try) (Next morning, Sarai feeds Amadore and cleans his room.) Sarai: (worried) Eat your food. (Amadore makes a loud sound and runs to the corner.) Sarai: OK…I need help. (Sarai finds Cody brushing his horse Monty.) Cody: (smiling) Come in. This is Monty. How is Amadore? Sarai: (nervous) I need your help. You said you knew my problem. Cody: It’s…your face. Sarai: (angry, clenching her fists) What? That’s not nice. Cody: Wait! You often look angry when you come near Amadore. You think too hard about the halter. You do not see your own face. Sarai: (doubting) Can horses really see our faces? That sounds funny. Cody: I can show you. Scene Three (The Small Test) (Cody takes two photos: one big smile, one angry face. They print out the pictures.) Cody: (holding photos in front of Monty) Watch this. (He shows the smiling photo. Monty stays calm. Then he shows the angry photo. Monty feels afraid and steps back.) Sarai: (surprised) Oh! The angry face scares him. I get it now. Cody: Horses watch our faces. You need a happy face. Sarai: (taking a deep breath) This is my last chance. Let’s go. Scene Four (Good News) Sarai: (walking in with the halter, smiling softly) We can do this, Amadore. (Amadore walks to her. He lets her put on the halter easily.) Sarai: (eyes wet with happiness) We made it! Cody: Good work! Let’s take him outside. 12. How does Sarai feel at first when Cody says he knows her problem? A. Excited. B. Uninterested. C. Scared. D. Thankful. 13. Why couldn’t Sarai put the halter on Amadore at first? A. Amadore hated staying on the old farm. B. She didn’t give Amadore enough tasty food. C. She spent too much time cleaning the room. D. She often looks angry when she’s near Amadore. 14. How did Cody prove his opinion? A. He put a halter on Monty and watched its change. B. He asked a stranger to talk to Monty with a big smile. C. He showed Monty two photos of different human faces. D. He gave tasty snacks to Monty and recorded its reaction. 15. What can we learn from the story? A. Team work can bring people so much fun. B. It’s important to protect animals around us. C. Ask strangers for help when we are in trouble. D. Show a friendly look when getting close to animals. B 13. D 14. C 15. 【12题详解】 第一幕中,当Cody说“I know what your problem is”时,Sarai回应“Who are you? I’m busy.”以及“(unhappy) You don’t know me or my horse.”,从她不耐烦的语气和“unhappy”的情绪标注可以看出,她起初对Cody的话并不感兴趣。 【13题详解】 第二幕中,Cody指出:“You often look angry when you come near Amadore.” The angry face scares him.” You need a happy face.” A Talk with a Short-video Blogger Guest introduction Li Mei is a popular short video blogger. so“所以”、because“因为”、if“如果”均逻辑不符。 talk with“交谈”、care about“关心”、cheer up“使振奋”,均不符合场景,排除。 根据后文“It was Tina!” be thankful for意为“对⋯⋯感到感激/庆幸”。 break awful completely against anywhere soldier make every effort Typhoon White Dolphin hit Yongjia on August 9.
