Tom came to his teacher and asked him, “Sir, I have a question. How many friends should a person have-one or many?”
“It is very simple,” the teacher answered. “Get me that red apple from the highest branch of the tree.”
Tom looked up and said, “It’s too high. I can’t reach it.”
“Ask a friend. Maybe he can help,” the teacher suggested.
Tom called another student and stood on his shoulders (肩膀) to reach the branch. “I still can’t reach it, sir,” said Tom sadly after the first try.
“Don’t you have more friends?” the teacher smiled.
Tom asked more friends to come over. They stood on each other’s shoulders, trying to make a human pyramid (金字塔) . But the apple was so high that they couldn’t go higher and the pyramid fell. Tom still couldn’t reach the apple.
Then one of the friends went home, brought a ladder (梯子) and Tom finally picked the apple.
After getting the apple, the teacher asked, “So, do you understand how many friends a person needs?”
“Yes, I do,” Tom said. “Many, so together we can work out any problem.”

Lily and Emma were classmates, but they were very different. Lily, an outgoing basketball star, always had a smile on her face. Emma, a quiet book lover, spent most of her spare time reading. They hardly spoke, thinking that they might have nothing in common.
One rainy afternoon, Lily stayed late at school for basketball practice. As she hurried to leave, she fell and sprained (扭伤) her ankle (脚踝). “Ouch!” she cried. She couldn’t walk and felt worried when she realized that she had left her phone in her locker. She didn’t know what to do at that time.
Just then, Emma appeared, holding a large umbrella and carrying some books in her arms. Seeing how worried Lily was, she hurried over without thinking twice. “Are you okay?” Emma asked.
“I think I hurt my ankle,” Lily replied. She had never expected to get help from the quiet girl.
Without thinking twice, Emma helped Lily stand up and handed her the umbrella. She even called a taxi and sent her to the hospital. She stayed with her until Lily’s parents arrived.
The next day, Lily thanked Emma sincerely. “You are much kinder than I expected,” she said. Emma smiled, “Friends help each other, right?”
From that day on, everything changed. Lily realized that even though they were different, Emma was as reliable (可信赖的) as any other teammate. Emma, in turn, looked up to Lily for her courage. Their friendship showed that differences can make life richer—as long as hearts are open.

Friends are very important in our lives. If you’re a quiet person and want to know how to make friends, here’s some advice for you.
Start with small things. If you feel lonely (孤单), try making friends with others. Always start with small steps. Begin communicating with one or two people to get comfortable in socializing (交际). That way your life won’t be too busy and you’ll learn something about communication.
Get along with people who have similar interests to you. If you communicate with a few people first, get to know them and try to find your common interests. For example, if both of you like football or basketball, then sports can be a good topic between you.
Remember, it’s better to have a few good friends than many not-so-good ones. Having two or three true friends is better than having ten not-so-good friends. If you try to have too many friends, you may feel tired. So try to make friends with people who can help you.
Keep positive (积极的) and never compare. Even if you can’t find your true friend in a few months or years, you should keep on trying. Always keep your experiences in the past to go on building your friendships. Also, never forget that every person is special in his/her way. So, don’t compare one friend of yours with another. Find out their differences and show your full respect.
If you follow the advice above, you are sure to make your true friends.

Men and women often do things in different ways. Scientists are curious to know the reasons. Through some research on the human brain, they’ve discovered some interesting facts.
Generally, women’s brains make them notice and remember details more easily. They are more likely to think back to the smell in a room, the sound of a song, or the little things they see during the day. For example, a woman might easily remember what her friend wore last week. However, men’s brains are more focused on the task at hand. A man will pay more attention to a single job until it’s fully finished. He might work on fixing a car without being influenced by other things.
These different thinking patterns also influence how they view their lives. Women usually see all sides of their lives as connected. If they have a bad day at work, it might influence their mood at home. However, men usually see each part of their lives, like work, hobbies, and family, as separate pieces.
In a team, men and women contribute differently. Women are more likely to share ideas and build good relationships among team members. Men, on the other hand, prefer to arrange tasks and make everyone work effectively.
Although men and women have their differences, both ways of thinking are important. They help us solve different problems and answer all kinds of questions in life.
26.What does the underlined word “curious” mean in Paragraph 1?
A.Interested. B.Happy. C.Surprised. D.Angry.
27.What do men usually do in group tasks?
A.Share their ideas. B.Build good relationships.
C.Finish tasks with the least time. D.Hand out tasks and ensure good work.

A.To show women are better at dressing up than men.
B.To prove women have a better memory for small details.
C.To explain why women care more about their friends.
D.To compare women’s and men’s work abilities.
29.What’s the writer’s purpose of writing the text?
A.To show men and women are totally different.
B.To explain why men and women think differently.
C.To encourage men and women to learn from each other.
D.To show the thinking differences between men and women.
30.What can we infer from the passage?
A.Men’s way of thinking is better than women’s.
B.Women’s way of thinking suits family problems.
C.We need both men’s and women’s ways of thinking to live better.

What Makes a True Friend?
Friendship is one of the most valuable things in life. But what makes a true friend? Different people have different opinions.
Some people think that a true friend should be someone who shares similar interests. They believe that having common hobbies and activities makes it easier to spend time together. For example, if both friends love sports, they can play together and enjoy each other’s company.
Other people think that differences are more important in a friendship. They believe that friends who are different can learn from each other. For example, one friend may be outgoing, while the other is quiet. The outgoing friend can help the quiet one become more confident, and the quiet friend can help the outgoing one become more thoughtful.
In my opinion, a true friend is someone who is honest and supportive. A true friend tells you the truth, even when it is hard to hear. A true friend is always there for you, whether you need help or just someone to talk to. As the saying goes, “A friend in need is a friend indeed.” I think that is the most important quality of a true friend.

A.Friends should be honest and supportive. B.Friends should have similar interests.

①When you’re trying to make friends, you’ll probably meet someone who just doesn’t like you, though you’ve never done anything to him or her. Well, what should you do? Here’s some advice.
②Gossip (流言蜚语) can make meeting new people difficult, especially when people hear something bad about you. It can prevent someone from getting to know you at all. When you’re in a situation like this, it feels bad. Instead of trying to win them over (说服), however, just be yourself. As time goes by, they will see that the gossip about you is wrong. Or they may choose to believe it. Don’t worry about it and move on by being friendly to the kind people.
③You’d think that your friend’s friends would also become your friends. But it doesn’t work that way. Sometimes people are happy with the friendships they have, and they aren’t interested in adding any more. If someone chooses not to be friends with you just because you’re new to the group, it’s fine. There’s nothing wrong with you or them.
④An even more difficult situation is when someone has met you and just doesn’t like you. Every joke you make is taken the wrong way. Every time you try to do something nice, they find fault (找茬儿). As much as it hurts, accept that not everyone is going to be your friend. Don’t take it personally. These things could happen to everyone. There are just some people you won’t like.
⑤In a word, if someone doesn’t want to be your friend, that’s okay. Don’t get angry with them because it’s their choice. Instead, give your time and attention to the people that are interested in being with you.
46.If people choose to believe the gossip about you, you should ________.
A.try to win them over B.let them know the truth
C.not worry about it and move on D.find out where the gossip comes from
47.Why don’t your friend’s friends want to be your friends sometimes?
A.Because they think it’s a waste of time making new friends.
B.Because they aren’t interested in adding any more.
C.Because they worry that a new friend will influence their old friendship.
D.Because they share no common interests with new friends.
48.What does the underlined sentence “Don’t take it personally.” in Paragraph 4 mean?
A.You shouldn’t share it with others. B.You shouldn’t stop it by yourself.
C.You shouldn’t take it to heart. D.You shouldn’t accept it in person.
49.Which is the best way to divide (分割) the passage?
A.①//②③④//⑤ B.①//②③//④⑤ C.①//②③④⑤ D.①②//③④//⑤
