And when I wanted money for a new computer, I washed cars, babysat, and walked dogs for all my neighbors.
___19___ this year everything changed. I had set my sights on a summer ___20___that I was determined to get at the Water Zone, because the employees there could go on the water rides after their work and get free food at the snack bar. I completed the application in my neatest handwriting, carefully prepared for my interview, and gathered a pack of ___23___ letters. I was certain that nothing could keep me from my dream job.
But after my _____24_____, the manager of the Water Zone told me that he could hire only those with experience in water safety. I was ______25______. I felt like a failure.
On the last weekend before school ended, my teacher, Mrs. Keller, asked me _____26_____ I would be interested in the kids’ summer day camp. I decided that I had nothing to _____27_____, so I called the manager and ______28______ an interview. She was ______29______ by my babysitting experience and employed me. In less than a week, I had completely _____30_____ about wanting to work at the water park. I realized that I had discovered my life’s _____32_____: to work with children. I now have a new goal. I’m going to study to become an elementary school teacher.

A
From the very beginning of school we make books and reading a constant source of possible failure and public humiliation. When children are little we make them read aloud, before the teacher and other children, so that we can be sure they “know” all the words they are reading. This means that when they don’t know a word, they are going to make a mistake, right in front of everyone. After having taught fifth-grade classes for four years, I decided to try at all costs to rid them of their fear and dislike of books, and to get them to read oftener and more adventurously.
One day soon after school had started, I said to them, “Now I’m going to say something about reading that you have probably never heard a teacher say before. I would like you to read a lot of books this year, but I want you to read them only for pleasure. I am not going to ask you questions to find out whether you understand the books or not. If you understand enough of a book to enjoy it and want to go on reading it, that’s enough for me. Also I’m not going to ask you what words mean. “
The children sat stunned and silent. Was this a teacher talking? One girl, who had just come to us from a school where she had had a very hard time, looked at me steadily for a long time after I had finished. Then, still looking at me, she said slowly and seriously, Mr Holt, do you really mean that?” I said just as seriously, “I mean every word of it.
During the spring she really astonished me. One day, she was reading at her desk, From a glimpse of the illustrations I thought I knew what the book was. I said to myself, “It can’t be,” and went to take a closer look. Sure enough, she was reading Moby Dick , in edition with woodcuts. I said, “Don’t you find parts of it rather heavy going?” She answered, Oh, sure, but I just skip over those parts and go on to the next good part. “
This is exactly what reading should be and in school so seldom is, an exciting, joyous adventure. Find something, dive into it, take the good parts, skip the bad parts, get what you can out of it, go on to something else. How different is our mean-spirited, picky insistence that every child get every last little scrap of “understanding” that can be dug out of a book.

A. She skipped over those easy parts while reading.

Have you ever wondered how other people start their day? Morning routines are usually private, witnessed only by family members if they’re awake, and yet these routines are very important for setting a productive tone for the rest of the day. Especially when mornings are cold and dark, there is something fascinating about discovering how others get out of bed each day.
This is the intriguing concept behind a website called My Morning Routine (MMR). Founded in 2012 by Michael Xander and Benjamin Spall MMR has interviewed more than 218 people about their early-morning habits, always asking the same basic set of questions. Every Wednesday an inspiring routine story is published online.
MMR has a statistics page that was started after 133 morning routine interviews were completed. It’s now updated every week. The statistics illustrate the common denominators across all interviews. Here are some of the key findings.
Coffee is king among the participants, with water coming in a far-off second as their favorite drink in the morning, and nearly everybody hates email. Do you answer email first in the morning or leave it until later in the day? Of all the questions they ask the participants, this is the one that never fails to stir up an emotive response. So why do we read about other people’s morning routines? Well, first of all, it’s fun. Perhaps your first impression is like mine — skeptical that such a thing how could possibly be interesting. It is, quite literally, catching a glimpse of a part of people’s lives we don’t normally see.
Second, I think many people harbor a secret desire to improve their morning routines, to get better at starting the day off right: The idea behind MMR is to influence readers to make adjustments to their own routines and to take bits and pieces of other’ successful routines and incorporate them into their own.
46. What is the purpose of the first paragraph?
A. To show some characteristics of MMR.
B. To suggest learning from others’ routines.
C. To introduce the reason for founding MMR.
D. To explain the importance of morning routines.
47. What do we know about MMR from the text?
A. It aims to collect healthy morning routines.
B. It is a world-known social network website.
C. It keeps updating its statistics on a daily basis.
D. It provides an inspiring routine story every week.
48. What is a common morning routine according to MMR?
A. Drinking coffee B. Reading the news.
C. Replying to emails. D. Conducting an interview.
49. What does the underlined phrase “stir up” in paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. make up B. lead to C. cancel D. keep away
50. What is the author’s attitude towards reading other people’s morning routines?
A. Skeptical B. Supportive C. Negative D. Uninterested
D
Some of Earth’s plants have fallen in love with metal. With roots that act practically like magnets (磁铁), these organisms — about 700 are known — flourish in metal-rich soils that make hundreds of thousands of other plant species flee or die.
Slicing open one of these trees or running the leaves of its bush cousin through a peanut press produces a blue-green “juice”. This “juice” is naturally one-quarter nickel (镍), far more concentrated than the one feeding the world’s nickel smelters (熔炉).
The plants not only collect the soil’s minerals into their bodies but seem to store them to “ridiculous” levels, said Alan Baker, a visiting botany professor at the University of Melbourne who has researched the relationship between plants and their soils since the 1970s. This vegetation could be the world’s most efficient, solar-powered mineral smelters. What if, as a partial replacement to traditional, energy-intensive and environmentally costly mining and smelting, the world harvested nickel plants?
Dr. Baker and an international team of colleagues have set their sights on convincing the world the idea is more than just a fun though texperiment. On a plot of land rented from a rural village on the Malaysian side of the island of Borneo, the group has proved it at small scale. Every six to 12 months, a farmer shaves off one foot of growth from these nickel-hyper-accumulating plants and either burns or squeezes the metal out. After a short purification (提纯), farmers could hold in their hands roughly 500 pounds of nickel citrate (柠檬酸镍), potentially worth thousands of dollars on international markets.
Now, as the team scales up to the world’s largest trial at nearly 50 acres, their target audience is industry. In a decade, the researchers hope that a greater consumer demand for base metals and rare minerals could be filled by the same kind of farming that produces the world’s coconuts and coffee.
51. What does the underlined word “flourish” in paragraph 1 probably mean?
A. hide themselves B. attract the attention of others
C. die out D. grow well
52. What could be inferred from Paragraph 2?
A. Nickel runs along those plants’ leaves.
B. The blue-green “juice” contains a high concentration of nickel.
C. To produce nickel, those trees should be put into smelters.
D. Without peanut press, the blue-green “juice” can’t be produced.
53. What can we learn from Paragraphs 3 and 4?
A. Dr. Baker and his group have already started testing this plant in large quantities.
B. This vegetation contains a high content of nickel.
C. Farmers will cut down the plants and burn the metal out every six to 12 months.
D. Dr. Baker and his group have made a fortune from the vegetation.
54. What is the passage mainly about?
A. An introduction of metal-purification technology.
B. The wide use of nickel-hyper-accumulating plants.
C. The discovery of nickel-hyper-accumulating plants.
D. The farming for metals.
55. What is the author’s attitude towards the prospect of farming the vegetation?
A. Short-sighted. B. Wait-and-see. C. Optimistic. D. Skeptical.

In the animal kingdom, weakness can bring about aggression in other animal. This sometimes happens with humans also. But I have found that my weakness brings out the kindness in people. I see it every day when people hold doors for me, pour cream into my coffee, or help me to put on my coat. And I have discovered that it makes them happy.
From my wheelchair experience, I see the best in people, but sometimes I feel sad because those who appear independent miss the kindness I see daily. They don’t get to see this soft side of others. Often, we try every way possible to avoid showing our weakness, which includes a lot of pretending. But only when we stop pretending we’ re brave or strong do we allow people to show the kindness that’ s in them.
Last month, when I was driving home on a busy highway, I began to feel unwell and drove more slowly than usual. People behind me began to get impatient and angry, with some speeding up alongside me, horning (按喇叭) or even shouting at me. At that moment,I decided to do something I had never done in twenty-four years of driving. I put on the car flashlights and drove on at a really low speed.
No more angry shouts and no more horns!
When I put on my flashlights, I was saying to the other drivers, “I have a problem here. I am weak and doing the best I can.” And everyone understood. Several times, I saw drivers who wanted to pass. They couldn’t get around me because of the stream of passing traffic. But instead of getting impatient and angry, they waited, knowing the driver in front of them was in some way weak.
Sometimes situations call for us to act strong and brave even when we don’t feel that way. But those are few and far between. More often, it would be better if we don’t pretend we feel strong when we feel weak or pretend that we are brave when we are scared.
56. When will people feel happy as the author has discovered? (No more than 7 words)
57. Why does the author feel sad sometimes in Paragraph 2? (No more than 12 words)
58. What did the other drivers do when they saw the flashlights (No more than 4 words)t?
59. What does the underlined the sentence in Paragraph 6 probably mean? (No more than 5 words)
60. What can we learn from the author’s experience? (No more than 20 words).

1)( informal ) to succeed in getting a job, etc., especially one that a lot of other people want
He's just landed a starring role in Spielberg's next movie.
She's just landed herself a company directorship.
2)[ V + adv./prep. ] to arrive somewhere and cause difficulties that have to be dealt with
Why do complaints always land on my desk (= why do I always have to deal with them) ?
1)[ C, U ] meaning that is important and valuable to you 重要意义;有价值的意义
Volunteer work gives her life (a sense of) purpose .
2)[ U ] the ability to plan sth and work successfully to achieve it 意志;毅力;决心
He has enormous confidence and strength of purpose .
I felt l was doing something significant. I realized that I had discovered my life's purpose: to work with children.

When children are little we make them read aloud before the teacher and other children,so that we can be sure they "know" all the words they are reading. This means that when they don't know a word, they are going to make a mistake, right in front of everyone",可知当孩子们还小的时候,我们让他们在老师和其他孩子面前大声朗读,这样我们就可以确保他们“知道”他们所读的所有单词。这意味着当他们一个字也不知道的时候,他们会在所有人面前犯错误。所以根据这篇短文,孩子们对书的恐惧和厌恶可能是由于他们在别人面前大声朗读的结果。故选D。
【42题详解】
细节理解题。 根据第二段作者的话Now I’m going to say something about reading that you have probably never heard a teacher say before. I would like you to read a lot of books this year, but I want you to read them only for pleasure. 故选A。
The children sat stunned and silent. 第三段第四行“ do you really mean that?’”
I said, “Don’t you find parts of it rather heavy going?” She answered, Oh, sure, but I just skip over those parts and go on to the next good part.
Find something, dive into it, take the good parts, skip the bad parts, get what you can out of it, go on to something else.
C
C 47. D 48. A 49. B 50. B

根据第四段“Of all the questions they ask the participants, this is the one that never fails to stir up an emotive response.(在所有问受访者的问题中,这一个总能stir up情绪化的反应。)” lead to(引起,导致)与之含义一致。
根据第四段中的 “So why do we read about other people’s morning routines? Well, first of all, it’s fun.(那么我们为什么要了解别人的晨间习惯呢?首先,这很有趣。)”和第五段中的 “Second, I think many people harbor a secret desire to improve their morning routines, to get better at starting the day off right: The idea behind MMR is to influence readers to make adjustments to their own routines and to take bits and pieces of other’ successful routines and incorporate them into their own.(其次,我认为很多人内心都想改善晨间习惯,更好地开启新的一天。MMR背后的理念就是影响读者调整自己的作息,借鉴他人成功作息中的部分内容融入自己的生活。)”可知,作者认为了解他人晨间习惯很有趣,还能借鉴优化自己的作息,态度是支持的。

C. Optimistic. D. Skeptical.
D 52. B 53. B 54. D 55. C
根据第一段中的“these organisms — about 700 are known — flourish in metal-rich soils that make hundreds of thousands of other plant species flee or die.(已知大约有700种这类生物在富含金属的土壤中flourish,而这样的土壤会让数十万其他植物物种逃离或死亡。)”
根据第二段中的“Slicing open one of these trees or running the leaves of its bush cousin through a peanut press produces a blue-green “juice”. This “juice” is naturally one-quarter nickel (镍), far more concentrated than the one feeding the world’s nickel smelters (熔炉).(切开这种树,或者用花生压榨机挤压它灌木近亲的叶子,会得到一种蓝绿色“汁液”。这种“汁液”天然含有四分之一的镍,浓度远高于供给全球镍熔炉的原料。)”可知,这种蓝绿色汁液镍含量极高。
【53题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中的“The plants not only collect the soil’s minerals into their bodies but seem to store them to “ridiculous” levels...(这些植物不仅把土壤中的矿物质富集到体内,储存量还达到惊人水平……)”
根据第三段中的“What if, as a partial replacement to traditional, energy-intensive and environmentally costly mining and smelting, the world harvested nickel plants?(如果我们收割这种含镍植物,以此部分替代传统高耗能、高污染的采矿冶炼方式,会怎么样呢?)” 以及第五段中的“In a decade, the researchers hope that a greater consumer demand for base metals and rare minerals could be filled by the same kind of farming that produces the world’s coconuts and coffee.(研究人员希望,十年之内,大众对基础金属与稀有矿物日益增长的消费需求,可以依靠和种植世界椰子、咖啡这类作物相同的 “培育方式” 来满足。)”
根据第五段“Now, as the team scales up to the world’s largest trial at nearly 50 acres, their target audience is industry. In a decade, the researchers hope that a greater consumer demand for base metals and rare minerals could be filled by the same kind of farming that produces the world’s coconuts and coffee.(现在团队扩大到近50英亩的全球最大试验田,他们的目标受众是工业界。研究人员希望,十年之内,大众对基础金属与稀有矿物日益增长的消费需求,可以依靠和种植世界椰子、咖啡这类作物相同的 “培育方式” 来满足。)”,能看出作者对这项技术前景持乐观态度。

阅读表达
56. When they offer their help to others.
Or: When they help other people.
Or: When they help others.
57. (Because) some people fail to see the kindness in others.
Or: (Because) some people miss the kindness the author see every day.
58. They waited (with patience).
59. But those situations are rare.
Or: But those hardly/ seldom occur.
Or: People seldom/rarely act like that.
60. We should sometimes admit our weakness, let others know our situation and get help from others when necessary.
由第一段中的“I see it every day when people hold doors for me, pour cream into my coffee, or help me to put on my coat. And I have discovered that it makes them happy.”(我每天都看到有人替我开门,给我的咖啡里倒奶油,或者帮我穿上外套。 When they offer their help to others. Or: When they help other people. Or: When they help others.
由第二段中的“From my wheelchair experience, I see the best in people, but sometimes I feel sad because those who appear independent miss the kindness I see daily.”(从我坐轮椅的经验来看,我看到了人最好的一面,但有时我感到难过,因为那些看起来独立的人错过了我每天看到的善良。) (Because) some people fail to see the kindness in others. Or: (Because) some people miss the kindness the author see every day.。
由倒数第二段中的“But instead of getting impatient and angry, they waited, knowing the driver in front of them was in some way weak.”(但代替不耐烦和愤怒,他们等待着,因为他们知道前面的司机在某种程度上很虚弱。) 故答案为They waited (with patience).。
由最后一段中的“Sometimes situations call for us to act strong and brave even when we don’t feel that way.”(有时情况需要我们表现得坚强勇敢,即使我们没有这种感觉。)和“More often, it would be better if we don’t pretend we feel strong when we feel weak or pretend that we are brave when we are scared.”(更多的时候,如果我们感觉软弱时不假装自己很坚强,或者我们害怕的时候假装很勇敢,那会更好。) But those are few and far between在此处意为“表现坚强勇敢的情况很少见/很少发生”或“人们不常这样做”。 But those situations are rare. Or: But those hardly/ seldom occur. Or: People seldom/rarely act like that.。
We should sometimes admit our weakness, let others know our situation and get help from others when necessary.。
