It was the documentary The World Before Your Feet that inspired us. Watching a man walk every street in New York made my friend Martha and me want to do the same thing in the heart of our own hometown. Besides, Kingston is considered the most walkable city in Ontario, Canada. So, armed with nothing but a massive book of street maps, we set out to walk a minimum of 10 kilometers every Saturday until we’d covered every paved bend and dead-end street.
Our 542.4-kilometer journey began on Sept 1, 2021. As keen walkers, we weren’t worried about the distance.
We loved the idea of discovering parts of the city we had never seen. Every yard offered a quick look into the personality of those who owned it. Some yards overflowed with apple trees bending under the weight of fruit. Others were covered with bits of painted wood and broken metal. But more than the scenery and steps taken, the biggest discovery was the questions, the sharp observations and the thoughtful conversations shared between us.
Hidden parts were uncovered as we walked and talked. I admitted my fondness for romance novels and blow-up Santas. Martha revealed her strong interest in tiny free libraries. “How are we even friends?” she joked one day. Maybe it’s because, for both of us, walking helps us stay balanced. There is a calming joy in hitting the pavement; along with an ease of conversation that comes without the face-to-face pressure that can prevent closeness. With every footstep, we became better listeners and our friendship grew.
Of course, as winter set in, there were some days we longed to stay under the covers, but what had started as a lighthearted project had grown into something precious, a meet-up vital to our mental and physical well-being. And our deep conversations remained private. What happened on the pavement stayed on the pavement.
Three years and six pairs of shoes later, we had walked the 542.4 kilometers. Forever changed by what started as a “what if” project and now full of confidence, we are already planning our next big walking adventure.
As long as we are able, we’ll keep pulling ourselves out of bed to put one foot in front of the other. In doing so, we’ll keep discovering not just ourselves, but each other as well.
41.What inspired the author and Martha to start their walking project?
A.A map book showing all roads in Kingston.
B.Their desire to explore Ontario’s urban streets.
C.A film about a New York street-walking challenge.
D.Kingston’s reputation as Ontario’s top walking city.
42.What did the author value most about their weekly walks?
A.The chance to see different types of yards.
B.The mix of natural scenery and urban elements.
C.The physical exercise from long-distance walking.
D.The deep talks and careful observations they shared.
43.Why does the author mention their discussions about “romance novels” and “tiny free libraries”?
A.To show they had similar tastes in books.
B.To describe arguments about their hobbies.
C.To prove their friendship was built on reading.
D.To explain how walking made them more open.
44.What can be learned about the walking project in winter?
A.They sometimes wanted to skip walking due to cold weather.
B.They recorded their conversations to keep memories.
C.They added more distance to their weekly goal.
D.They invited new friends to join their walks.
45.What is the main purpose of the last paragraph?
A.To describe future walking plans.
B.To explain ending the current journey.
C.To emphasize the project’s lasting impact.
D.To compare past and present attitudes toward walking.
【答案】41.C 42.D 43.D 44.A 45.C

根据文章第三段中的“But more than the scenery and steps taken, the biggest discovery was the questions, the sharp observations and the thoughtful conversations shared between us. (但比起风景和走过的步数,最大的发现是我们之间分享的问题、敏锐的观察和深思熟虑的对话。)”可知,作者在每周的步行中最看重的是她们之间深入的交谈和细致的观察。
43.推理判断题。根据文章第四段中的“I admitted my fondness for romance novels and blow-up Santas. Martha revealed her strong interest in tiny free libraries. (我承认我喜欢言情小说和充气圣诞老人。玛莎透露了她对微型免费图书馆的浓厚兴趣)以及“Maybe it’s because, for both of us, walking helps us stay balanced. There is a calming joy in hitting the pavement; along with an ease of conversation that comes without the face-to-face pressure that can prevent closeness. With every footstep, we became better listeners and our friendship grew.(也许是因为,对我们俩来说,走路能帮助我们保持平衡。走在人行道上有一种令人安心的喜悦,同时交谈也变得轻松自在,没有那种会阻碍亲密感的面对面压力。每一步前行,我们都变得更加善于倾听,友谊也因此不断加深。)”可知,作者提到这些看似不同甚至有点奇怪的个人爱好,是为了说明步行这种并排走的方式消除了面对面的压力,让她们能够更坦诚、开放地分享真实的自我,从而让友谊更加深厚。
44.推理判断题。根据文章第五段中的“Of course, as winter set in, there were some days we longed to stay under the covers, but what had started as a lighthearted project had grown into something precious, a meet-up vital to our mental and physical well-being. (当然,随着冬天来临,我们有些日子渴望窝在被子里。但这个最初只是轻松愉快的小项目,逐渐发展成了一件珍贵的事——一次对我们身心健康至关重要的相聚。)”可知,冬天天气寒冷时,她们有时确实想赖在床上不去走路(即想要跳过步行)。
45.推理判断题。根据文章最后一段“As long as we are able, we’ll keep pulling ourselves out of bed to put one foot in front of the other. In doing so, we’ll keep discovering not just ourselves, but each other as well. (只要我们还走得动,我们就会继续把自己从床上拉起来,一步一个脚印地走下去。在这个过程中,我们将继续发现不仅是我们自己,还有彼此。)”可知,最后一段升华了文章的主题,强调了这项步行计划对她们产生了深远且持久的影响,不仅改变了她们自己,也让她们在持续的脚步中不断重新发现彼此。

In recent years, plenty of media reports have shown that artificial intelligence has been widely applied to spot early warning signs of different cancers. It has gradually become a promising and efficient helper within modern medical fields. Now, a group of creative high school students in America has devoted plenty of spare time to developing new AI technology, aiming to assist local people in battling oral (口腔的) cancer, a disease with relatively high death risks across the country.
The students created a practical mobile app named Oral Scan. By analyzing clear pictures taken with ordinary smartphones, this tool can spot potential oral cancer symptoms with an accuracy of 82%. Once abnormal tissue or tumor (肿瘤) signs are picked up, it is also able to judge the development stage of illness at 87% accuracy, providing valuable reference for later professional medical care and treatment plans.
Nearly 52,000 Americans receive an oral cancer diagnosis annually, while over 12,000 patients end up losing their lives to this disease. Medical data proves early discovery can greatly raise survival rates by 40%, yet merely 30% of cases are found at an early stage. The situation turns more serious in remote places lacking professional dental care resources. Take Arkansas as an instance: 90% of local residents failed to receive regular dental check-ups last year.
“We learned that current diagnosis methods are expensive, intrusive and often inaccurate, making early detection rare,” said Veera Unnam, one of the team members from Bentonville West High School. “Poor medical conditions stop many people from doing necessary routine body checks in daily life.” Veera Unnam added.
This newly-developed app is free to download for all users. It only charges 50 cents for one detection task and gives clear feedback within 15 seconds. It fits both Android and iOS systems, expected to offer reliable and affordable health help for people living in medically underdeveloped areas all around the globe.
46.What is the main purpose of the Oral Scan app?
A.To improve dental services in poor areas. B.To treat oral cancer patients directly.
C.To help students learn more about AI. D.To detect and diagnose oral cancer early.
47.What can we learn from the data in Paragraph 3?
A.Over half of oral cancer patients die every year.
B.Early detection can increase survival chances greatly.
C.90% of people in Arkansas suffer from oral cancer.
D.Most oral cancers are found at an early stage in the US.
48.Why is early detection of oral cancer rare in some regions?
A.There are not many experienced dentists in those areas.
B.People are not afraid of the disease at all.
C.Current diagnosis methods have many disadvantages.
D.AI technology is not allowed to be used there.
49.What is the advantage of the new app compared with traditional methods?
A.It is free and can cure the disease in 15 seconds.
B.It costs less, works faster and is more widely available.
C.It only works in developed countries with good technology.
D.It has a 100% success rate in finding all kinds of tumors.
50.The author’s attitude towards the students’ invention is ________.
A.supportive and positive B.doubtful and worried
C.critical and negative D.uninterested and cold
【答案】46.D 47.B 48.C 49.B 50.A

In a groundbreaking new study, researchers discovered bottled water sold in stores can contain 10 to 100 times more bits of plastic than previously estimated — nanoplastics (纳米塑料) are so tiny that they cannot be seen under a microscope.
Nanoplastics are just 1/1000th the width of an average human hair — so tiny that experts say they can migrate through the tissues of the digestive tract (消化道) or lungs into the bloodstream, distributing potentially harmful artificial chemicals throughout the body and into cells.
One liter of water — equal to two standard- size bottled waters — contained an average of 240,000 plastic particles (粒子) from seven types of plastics, of which 90% were identified as nanoplastics and the rest were microplastics, according to the new study.
Microplastics are polymer fragments that can range from less than 0.2 inch (5 millimeters) down to 1/20000th of an inch (1 micrometer) . Anything smaller is a nanoplastic that must be measured in billionths of a meter.
In the new study, published Monday in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, researchers from Columbia University presented a new technology that can see, count and analyze the chemical structure of nanoparticles in bottled water.
Instead of 300 per liter, the team behind the latest study found the actual number of plastic bits in three popular brands of water sold in the United States to be in between 110,000 and 370,000, not higher.
“The innovative techniques presented in the study open the door for further research to better understand the potential risks to human health.” said Jane Houlihan, research director for Healthy Babies, Bright Futures — a nonprofit committed to reducing babies’ exposures to neurotoxic (毒害神经的) chemicals, who was not involved in the study.
“Infants and young children may face the greatest risks, as their developing brains and bodies are often more vulnerable to impacts from toxic exposures.” said Houlihan in an email.
Nanoplastics are the most worrisome type of plastic pollution for human health, experts say. That’s because the particles can invade individual cells and tissues in major organs, potentially interrupting cellular processes and depositing harmful chemicals such as bisphenols, phthalates, PFAS, and heavy metals.
There are things people can do to reduce their exposure to plastics, said Houlihan. “We can avoid consuming foods and drinks in plastic containers. We can wear clothing made from natural fabrics and buy consumer products made from natural materials,” Houlihan said. “We can simply assess the plastic in our daily lives and find alternatives whenever possible.”
51.Where can nanoplastics be found in our body?
A.The blood. B.The lung.
C.The stomach. D.Almost everywhere.
52.What are the differences between nanoplastics and microplastics?
A.Nanoplastics are harmful, while microplastics aren’t.
B.Nanoplastics exist in bottled water, while microplastics don’t.
C.Nanoplastics can migrate through certain tissues, while microplastics can’t.
D.Nanoplastics are relatively bigger, while microplastics are much smaller.
53.Why is Jane Houlihan’s statement mentioned in paragraph 7?
A.To add more background information for the new study.
B.To provide evidence for the discussion of plastic hazard.
C.To provide an objective evaluation of the new study.
D.To encourage readers to focus on the new study.
54.What is the meaning of the underlined word “vulnerable” in paragraph 8?
A.Fragile. B.Optimistic.
C.Emotional. D.Ignorant.
55.What would be the best title for the passage?
A.Nanoplastics: A Newly Discovered Plastic Type
B.Bottled Water: High Levels of Nanoplastics and Their Health Risks
C.How to Reduce Exposure to Plastics in Daily Life
D.The Difference Between Nanoplastics and Microplastics
【答案】51.D 52.C 53.C 54.A 55.B
根据第二段“Nanoplastics are just 1/1000th the width of an average human hair — so tiny that experts say they can migrate through the tissues of the digestive tract (消化道) or lungs into the bloodstream, distributing potentially harmful artificial chemicals throughout the body and into cells.(纳米塑料的宽度仅为人类平均头发的千分之一,非常小,专家表示,它们可以通过消化道或肺部的组织迁移到血液中,将潜在有害的人工化学物质分布到全身和细胞中)”可知,纳米塑料几乎可以到达我们身体的任何地方。故选D。
根据第二段“Nanoplastics are just 1/1000th the width of an average human hair — so tiny that experts say they can migrate through the tissues of the digestive tract (消化道) or lungs into the bloodstream, distributing potentially harmful artificial chemicals throughout the body and into cells.(纳米塑料的宽度仅为人类平均头发的千分之一,非常小,专家表示,它们可以通过消化道或肺部的组织迁移到血液中,将潜在有害的人工化学物质分布到全身和细胞中)”及第四段“Microplastics are polymer fragments that can range from less than 0.2 inch (5 millimeters) down to 1/20000th of an inch (1 micrometer). Anything smaller is a nanoplastic that must be measured in billionths of a meter.(微塑料是聚合物碎片,其尺寸范围从小于0.2英寸(5毫米)到1/20000英寸(1微米)。任何比这更小的都是纳米塑料,必须以十亿分之一米为单位进行测量)”可知,纳米塑料的核心特点是体积足够小,能够穿透特定组织进入血液循环,而微塑料不具备这一能力。故选C。
53.推理判断题。根据第七段““The innovative techniques presented in the study open the door for further research to better understand the potential risks to human health.” said Jane Houlihan, research director for Healthy Babies, Bright Futures — a nonprofit committed to reducing babies’ exposures to neurotoxic (毒害神经的) chemicals. who was not involved in the study.(“这项研究中提出的创新技术为进一步研究打开了大门,以便更好地了解对人类健康的潜在风险。”
故选A。
通读全文,尤其是根据第一段“In a groundbreaking new study, researchers discovered bottled water sold in stores can contain 10 to 100 times more bits of plastic than previously estimated — nanoplastics (纳米塑料) are so tiny that they cannot be seen under a microscope.(在一项开创性的新研究中,研究人员发现,商店里出售的瓶装水中含有的塑料碎片可能比之前估计的多10到100倍——纳米塑料非常小,在显微镜下都看不到)”、第二段“Nanoplastics are just 1/1000th the width of an average human hair — so tiny that experts say they can migrate through the tissues of the digestive tract (消化道) or lungs into the bloodstream, distributing potentially harmful artificial chemicals throughout the body and into cells.(纳米塑料的宽度仅为人类平均头发的千分之一,非常小,专家表示,它们可以通过消化道或肺部的组织迁移到血液中,将潜在有害的人工化学物质分布到全身和细胞中)”可知,文章主要说明了瓶装水中纳米塑料含量高及其对健康的潜在风险。

I grew up in a small, remote village in the eastern part of Zimbabwe. My world was very small and I only knew a few professions and as I started my first grade in primary school, the only profession that I knew was teaching. Therefore, at that time, being a teacher was my ambition.
A few years later, a young man from my village became a medical doctor. I admired his lifestyle. I was therefore inspired by his achievements and he became my role model. This is the reason why when I started high school, all I wanted to do was be a medical doctor. I hoped to take mostly science subjects in high school and then proceed to university to study medicine.
However, things didn’t go the way I expected. I could not take science subjects because they were not offered at my high school. At first I was very disappointed and depressed. I thought that my dreams had been shattered once again, but a little while later, I realized that this was a blessing: I had been given a chance to explore my options a little further than that.
As I completed high school and was preparing to go to college, my greatest attention was focused on accounting. Naturally, the subject becomes my best subject now at college. Now I am an accounting major but I wish to declare finance a major as well.
I value the importance of business in society very much. I want to be a financial advisor in the future. To make my dream come true, now I am studying hard to gain more knowledge about finance.
While I wish to achieve this, I agree that there is room for me to explore other opportunities, too. Our ambitions always change with new circumstances, new environments and as we get to know how big the world really is.
56.What did the author want to be when he started his first grade in primary school? (no more than 6 words)
57.Why did the author want to be a medical doctor later? (no more than 13 words)
58.What does the underlined word “shattered” in Paragraph 3 mean? (1 word)
59.What is the author doing to achieve his dream of being a financial advisor? (no more than 10 words)
60.What’s your dream as a teenager? And why do you have the dream? (no more than 20 words)
56.He wanted to be a teacher. 57.Because he was inspired by a young man from his village. 58.Broken. / Ended. / Destroyed. / Ruined 59.He is studying hard to gain more knowledge about finance. 60.(open) I want to be a teacher, because I think teachers are kind, patient, and wise. / I dream to be a doctor to help sick people around me.

I choose the topic “Growth Inspired by Nature”. Last spring, I found a small wild sunflower that grew through the cracks of our old backyard wall. It got little soil and water, but it still grew tall and bloomed bright yellow flowers in summer.
This made me realize that real growth never depends on perfect conditions. When I meet hard problems in math or feel upset about my school tasks, I always think of that sunflower. I will keep trying little by little, instead of giving up easily.
I also decide to spend 10 minutes every day doing small things well, which helps me grow step by step. I believe that the quiet strength from nature will always push me forward.
