During the Ice Age, the mammoths (猛犸象) lived both in Asia and America. But by about 4,000 years ago, the large and hairy elephants had disappeared.
Some scientists want to clone (克隆) a mammoth, and the first need is some mammoth DNA. Since the 1900s, scientists have been digging (挖) up remains (残骸) of mammoths in the cold ground. Some still even have their skin and hair. Unfortunately, even when it’s frozen, DNA still can’t be kept very well. It starts to break apart soon after an animal dies. Scientists have found plenty of mammoth DNA, but it’s all just short bits (零碎) and in a mess.
Modern Asian elephants are cousins of the ancient mammoths. Their DNA is about 99% the same. Still, that adds up to 70 million differences. But if we could change the elephant’s DNA in the places that are different, could we make mammoth DNA? Some researchers at Harvard are giving it a try. They have got out 14 bits of DNA in elephant blood cells that help mammoths stand (抵御) the cold. It seemed to work. But they’re only working with groups of cells, not a whole animal. There is still a long way to go before cloning a mammoth.
Even if scientists could clone a mammoth or other disappeared animals, would it be a good idea? It might be cool to see a real, living mammoth. But would such an animal be happy, with no other mammoths around? Who would teach it how to be a mammoth? There are important questions for trying to bring back any disappeared animals. Cloning is expensive and often fails. Would the money be better spent on saving endangered animals that are still alive?
29. What happened to mammoth DNA?
A. Stayed the same. B. Broke apart. C. Got longer. D. Disappeared.
30. Which of the following is TRUE about mammoths?
A. They still lived on the Earth 400 years ago.
B. They looked the same as today’s elephants.
C. They lived both in Africa and Asia.
D. They were not afraid of the cold weather.
31. What can we learn from the third paragraph?
A. There are only a few differences of DNA between mammoths and modern Asian elephants.
B. The scientists at Harvard have already cloned a mammoth.
C. It is not easy to clone a disappeared animal though their DNA is close to some animals’.
D. The scientists are going to put the DNA of standing cold in another animal.

Do you have a hobby? Do you like playing sports or painting? Scientists say that having a hobby is not only fun but also good for your brain.
When you do something you enjoy, your brain makes a special chemical called dopamine (多巴胺). Dopamine makes you feel happy and excited. This is why you feel good when you play your favourite sport or paint a beautiful picture.
Exercise is especially good for your brain. When you run, swim, or play basketball, your brain gets more oxygen (氧气). This helps you think more clearly and remember things better. Studies show that students who exercise regularly often do better in their studies.
Hobbies also help you relax. When you are worried about something, doing a hobby can help you calm down. It gives your brain a break from stress and helps you focus better when you go back to your work.
So, what hobby should you choose? The answer is simple: choose something you truly enjoy. It does not matter if you are good at it. What matters is that it makes you happy and keeps your brain healthy.
32. What is the passage mainly about?
A. How to play sports well B. How to paint beautiful pictures
C. Why hobbies are good for the brain D. How to get better grades
33. How does exercise help the brain?
A. It makes the brain bigger B. It helps the brain sleep
C. It stops the brain from working D. It gives the brain more oxygen
34. What does “dopamine” do?
A. It makes you feel happy B. It makes you feel tired
C. It makes you feel hungry D. It makes you feel sad
35. Which of the following is TRUE?
A. Only smart people should have hobbies
B. Hobbies can help you relax and focus better
C. You must be good at your hobby
D. Exercise is bad for your brain
D
We often hear the saying, “Like father, like son.” This means children are often very much like their parents. They may look the same, act the same, and even enjoy the same things. One important reason is that children learn from their parents every day. But more importantly, they carry genes from their parents.
There are about 30,000 genes in your body. They make you who you are. You get some genes from your mother and some from your father. These genes decide many things, like your hair color, eye color, and how tall you can be. They are like a special plan from your parents.
Sometimes, interesting things happen with genes. Some genes do not show up in your parents, but they show up in you. For example, your parents may both have double eyelids, but you have single eyelids. Why is that? It is because both of your parents have the single-eyelid genes inside them, but these genes do not show on their faces. When they give these genes to you, the genes start to work and show up.
So, every one of us is a fun and different mix of our parents’ genes. This mix makes each person special and unique.
Our life is also influenced by how we live and what we learn. So, while genes give us a start, our own choices and experiences help make us who we are. In the end, we are all a little like our parents, but we are also our own person. That is the beautiful and interesting story of family and life.
36. According to Paragraph 1, children are often like their parents for ________ reasons.
A. one B. two C. three D. four
37. What do genes NOT decide according to the passage?
A. Favorite food. B. Eye color. C. Height. D. Hair color.
38. What does the word “unique” in Paragraph 4 most probably mean?
A. Same. B. Healthy. C. Different. D. Popular.
39. Which of the following is most likely TRUE according to the passage?
A. A child may look different from their parents.
B. Genes decide everything about a person.
C. Children always look the same as their parents.
D. Our experiences do not change who we are.
40. Which is the suitable title for the passage?
A. Why Children Look Like Their Parents
B. How Genes Make You Who You Are
C. More Than Genes: What Makes You, You
D. The Secret of Single and Double Eyelids

【答案】29. B 30. D 31. C

It usually falls in September or October. It is a symbol of families getting together. On this day, family members usually have a big dinner together. After dinner, we often eat delicious mooncakes and admire the full moon. We also listen to the traditional story of Chang’e. I love this festival very much because I can share happiness with my family.
