Slides are simple but always fun. All you need to do is climb up to the top and slide down. But did you know that there is science behind this simple playground equipment (设备)?
①You climb up the slide and sit down. You are ready to go. Are you sliding down? No, not yet. Things stay still (静止) unless something makes them move. It is Newton’s first law. So you have to give yourself a push to start the journey down.
②Now you are sliding down.
Do you feel you are slowing down a bit? When two things rub (摩擦) against each other, they cause friction (摩擦力). Without friction, you will slide down faster and faster to the bottom.
③At the bottom of the slide, you come to a full stop. Your feet touch the ground and add extra friction. Newton’s first law also says moving things keep moving unless something makes them stop. So, if you do not use your feet, you’ll fly off the slide.
Isaac Newton said what goes up must come down. He was talking about gravity (重力). Slides work because of gravity. But that is not at all.
23.What is Newton’s first law?
A.When you push something, it pushes back.
B.Things stay still if something makes them move.
C.A thing will go faster if you push it harder.
D.An object will not move until a force acts on it.
24.What would happen if you do not use your feet at the bottom of the slide?
A.You would stay still. B.You would stop at once.
C.You would add extra friction. D.You would slide uncontrollably.
25.Which picture explains why you slow down a bit when sliding down?
A. B.
C. D.
26.What is the main reason for sliding?
A.gravity B.friction
C.pull D.push
【答案】23.D 24.D 25.B 26.A
第①段明确指出:“Things stay still unless something makes them move.
24.第③段明确指出:“So, if you do not use your feet, you’ll fly off the slide”,说明在滑梯底部如果不用脚,人会从滑梯飞出去,出现不受控制滑行的情况。
25.第②段明确指出:“When two things rub against each other, they cause friction. Without friction, you will slide down faster and faster to the bottom”,说明下滑时速度变慢是摩擦力的作用,对应标注“friction”的图片。
26.文中末尾指出:“Slides work because of gravity”,说明滑梯能够滑行的主要原因是重力。

Three students write about a project they have done.
Kemal
For my project, I had to find out about our teeth, mouth and stomach. I had to find pictures of them and explain what happens to food, from the moment we put it in our mouths to when it goes into our stomachs. Then I gave a talk about it all to my class. Writing the project was interesting and I learned a lot about the body, but I didn’t like giving the talk. I felt really worried before I did that.
Dan
I did a project about why and how we get some health problems, such as colds, having a temperature, toothache and pain. With all the information I found, I had to make a web page for teenagers to use. I enjoyed doing the project, especially the talk to my class at the end. After the talk, I gave them a quiz(测试)and they answered everything really well. Perhaps I should be a teacher in the future!
Jerzy
My project was about what you should do when people get ill suddenly or hurt themselves, so it was really useful. For example, I now know how to help a friend who has cut himself badly, or a family member who has broken an arm or a leg. I had to write a ten-page document(文件)for teenagers. I found most of the information I needed online. One thing the project taught me is that I certainly don’t want to be a doctor or a nurse when I’m older!
27.What was Dan’s main task of the project?
A.A useful report. B.An online survey. C.A long document. D.A web page.
28.Which picture shows Jerzy’s project?
A. B.
C. D.
29.Who is most likely to become a teacher in the future?
A.Kemal. B.Jerzy. C.Dan. D.None of them.
30.What are their projects about?
A.Solve Problems. B.The World of Science.
C.Health and Body. D.Think outside the Box.
【答案】27.D 28.D 29.C 30.C

Every seed bank has a story. Here is one built inside a mountain.
Spitsbergen is a cold island near the North Pole, where it is dark for months in winter. In 2008, builders cut a long hall deep into its frozen mountain. Inside, on steel shelves, rest thousands of small boxes.
Governments and research centres from all over the world send in their seeds: rice from Asia, wheat from Africa, potatoes from South America... Each box is a copy that stays safe while the original may face danger at home.
Why does the world need such a vault (保管库)? A war, a new plant disease or bad weather can wipe out a kind of crop in one bad year. The boxes in the mountain wait quietly for the day when someone needs to begin again.
The collection never stops growing. Today the vault holds more than one million seed samples, and China sends in special seeds of its own every year.
One day, we hope, nobody will ever need to open these boxes.

根据“life there was very hard”及“narrow”,可知路况差,rough“崎岖的”符合语境。
根据上文“Strong wind would carry dirt and cause terrible sandstorms”,本空与dry并列,共同描述农田的恶劣条件。
根据“Many villagers had to leave for cities to make a living”,表达外出务工的原因。
”可知固定搭配“link A with B”,应选用动词link,表示“连接”,link the village with towns“把村庄和城镇紧密相连”。
hope to“希望做(未必成功)”;plan to“计划做”;decide to“决定做”,都体现不出成功达成结果。
根据上文“They could hardly get enough corn”,本词和fruits、grains并列,同属农作物。
gave up“放弃”;put on“穿上”;looked after“照顾”,均不符合上下文语义。
根据后一句“fresh vegetables to other places”,把新鲜蔬菜销往外地,sells表示“售卖”,sells fresh vegetables“销售新鲜蔬菜”。
后文“never wants to leave his hometown”体现积极情绪。
