三、阅读理解。(35分)
(A)
We can do many interesting chemical tests in our class. Today, we will use CO2 to blow up a balloon! Mixing baking soda (小苏打) with vinegar (醋) together can give off the CO2.
What you’ll need
(1)A balloon
(2)About 40 ml of water
(3)A soft drink bottle
(4)Vinegar or lemon juice
(5)A teaspoon of baking soda
Instruction (说明)
●Before you begin, make sure that you pull the balloon long to make it as easy as possible to blow up.
●Put the 40 ml of water into the soft drink bottle.
●Add the baking soda and mix it with water.
●Put the vinegar in and quickly put the balloon over the mouth of the bottle.
What’s happening?
If all goes well, then the balloon should become bigger and bigger! Adding the vinegar to the baking soda creates a chemical result. The baking soda is a base (碱), while the vinegar is an acid (酸). When the two are mixed, they’ll create CO2. The gas rises up and runs away through the soft drink bottle. However, it doesn’t get away from the balloon, pushing it out and blowing it up.

The five-second rule is a popular idea that says if your food falls on the floor, it’s still safe to eat as long as you pick it up within five seconds. But is this true?
Scientists have tested the five-second rule, and most of them agree that it’s not a good guideline (指导原则) on food safety. How long the food stays on the floor doesn’t matter as much as two other things: what kind of food it is and where it lands. For example, wet foods, like fruits, are easier to get dirty. They pick up more bacteria (细菌) than dry foods, like biscuits. This is because bacteria can travel more easily in water.
The floor surface also makes a difference. Scientists have done tests on different floor surfaces, like metal, tiles (瓷砖), and carpets (地毯), to see which one lets bacteria get on food the most. Guess what? Food that fell on carpets picked up the fewest bacteria. This is because carpets have small fibers (纤维) that don’t let food touch much of their surface, while smooth (光滑) surfaces like tiles have a bigger area for bacteria to get on the food.
However, picking up food quickly can still help keep it cleaner, because the longer it stays on the floor, the more chances there are for bacteria to get on it. But even if it’s just five seconds, some bacteria can still get on the food. This makes the five-second rule a questionable practice for making sure food is safe to eat.
根据短文内容,选择最佳答案。
29. What’s the five-second rule about?
A. Food waste. B. Food safety.
C. Food business. D. Food production.
30. What does the underlined word “This” in Paragraph 2 refer to?

B. The floor surface makes food dirty.
C. Bacteria can make food taste worse.
D. Wet foods are easier to get dirty than dry foods.
31. Which floor surface makes food pick up the fewest bacteria?
A. Tiles. B. Metal. C. Carpets. D. Wood.
32. What does the writer think of the five-second rule?
A. Doubtful. B. Successful. C. Helpful. D. Useful.
33. What does the passage mainly tell us about the five-second rule?
A. It shows how to pick up food quickly.
B. It’s not useful for keeping food clean at all.
C. It’s not a good way to decide if food is safe to eat.
D. It works best on the wet food that falls on a wet floor.

Do you know how many ants live on Earth? Scientists in Hong Kong say there are about 20,000,000,000,000,000 ants! That means there are nearly 2.5 million ants for every human.
How did they count such a big number? In the past, many scientists counted ants in different places. They picked up fallen leaves and earth and dried them to make the ants come out for counting. With the help of 465 studies that cover all lands, the new research made the guess about the number of ants.
Wang Runxi, one of the writers, said that the number of ants and where they live can show how the environment is changing.
“Ants play an important role in nature,” Wang told Science and Technology Daily. “They help make the earth soft, spread seeds (种子), break down dead things and form a part of the food chain (食物链). They live in many places, but not where it’s too cold.”
“Compared with big animals, small ants can feel changes in the environment more easily,” Wang added. Most ants live in high-temperature areas. But in the last few years, ants have been moving toward the cold places because of global warming (全球变暖). Changes in forests, such as cutting down too many trees, also change the number of ants, the study showed.
“Our map of ants helps us see how ants will act when the world around them changes,” the scientists wrote.

Lucy is a 14-year-old girl who loves classical music. Every time she listens to Beethoven’s piano pieces, she feels peaceful. “It helps me forget my worries,” she says. However, her best friend enjoys rock music much more.
This shows a simple truth: Different people may have different opinions. However, it is OK to express your own opinions. There’s nothing wrong with sharing what you truly think. ____44____ Here are three tips for you.
Listen to others carefully.
Although you may want to explain your side, listening to others’ opinions first will help keep the conversation peaceful. ____45____ So, when your friend talks about rock music, don’t cut in. Listen carefully.
Express your own opinion politely.
Instead of saying “Rock music is too loud,” Lucy could try: “I like softer music better, but your favorite song has cool guitar sounds!” ____46____ Remember, you’re not trying to start an argument. Winning or losing is not the point. Don’t try to force your friend to think like you.
Value your friendship most.
____47____ A smile and a sentence like “We’re still friends even if we like different music!” can solve many problems. Over time, this respect will make your friendship even stronger.
Differences may help us be better. For teenagers like Lucy, sharing opinions politely is not only about respect. ____48____ As they learn to accept differences, they discover new ideas and become wiser. After all, the world is full of different voices. And understanding them is the first step to grow up.

My Progress
In the past two years, I have made great progress in English. I still remember how difficult it was for me at first.
When I was in Grade 7, I could hardly speak English. I felt shy and afraid of making mistakes. But I decided to change. I began to read English aloud every morning and kept an English diary. I also asked my teacher for help. Little by little, I improved. Now I can give a speech in English confidently.
This experience taught me that hard work pays off. As long as we keep trying, we can make progress and become better.
