Communicating is very important. But how can we communicate with strangers? Here are some ways to help us communicate with strangers well.

Be brave (勇敢的). First, focusing on what we have in common is a good idea. When we find that, we will have a lot to talk about. It will make us feel less nervous.

Second, asking open-ended (无确定答案的) questions is helpful. These questions often start with “what”, “how” or “why” and need more than a “yes” or “no” answer. This can make the conversation longer and more interesting.

Wearing a smile is good at any time. Smiling is a sign to tell others that you are kind. That will leave a good impression (印象) on others. Be sure that you treat others with kindness. You can also watch for signs on their faces. When the pleasant communication is over, you can show the expectation of talking again. For example, you can say, “I am very happy to meet you. Sign language is a wonderful way of communicating by using hands, faces, and bodies. It helps deaf (聋的) or hard-of-hearing people share their thoughts and feelings easily. There are over 300 different sign languages around the world. And just like spoken languages, each country has its own special way of signing.

Sign language has a long history. Historical records show that deaf people started using simple hand signs in ancient times. Charles-Michel de l’Épée, a Frenchman known as the Father of the Deaf, played a key role in the development of

sign language. In the 1750s, he opened the world’s first free public school for deaf children. He collected the home signs these children used and created the first sign language dictionary. His ideas later influenced the development of deaf education and sign languages in many countries.

Sign language is more than just a way to talk. It serves as a bridge that connects people. Every year on 23rd September, we celebrate the International Day of Sign Languages to show the importance of sign language. Today, we can see sign language on TV, in schools, and even in hospitals. Even if we’re not deaf, learning sign language can help us communicate with deaf people.
