Students will work in groups to complete four assignments (作业) during the course. All the assignments will be submitted by the assigned date through Blackboard, our online learning and course management system.
Daily Work/In-Class Writings and Tests/Group Work/Homework (10%)
Class activities will vary from day to day, but students must be ready to complete short in-class writings or tests drawn directly from assigned readings or notes from the previous class' lecture/discussion, so it is important to take careful notes during class. Additionally, from time to time I will assign group work to be completed in class or short assignments to be completed at home, both of which will be graded.
Late Work
An essay not submitted in class on the due date will lose a letter grade for each class period it is late. If it is not turned in by the 4th day after the due date, it will earn a zero. As a young man, I dreamed of my ideal class where students with shining eyes were curious about everything before my first teaching year. I repeatedly pictured lively debates and enthusiastic voices filling the room.
However, when I took charge of a tenth-grade English class at a New York school, reality struck. These students had struggled with their studies at their previous schools and came here for a new chance. I followed traditional teaching methods, carried out unchanging lesson plans and stuck to strict classroom rules.
At the start of the term, all the students stared blankly at textbooks. They weren’t ready to share their ideas or join in class activities. After observing this discouraging situation for weeks, I realized that strict and rigid (死板的) teaching stopped students creating new ideas and killed their interest in study, which left me wondering how I could improve my teaching.
I decided to try something completely different. So I introduced the popular novel Harry Potter as our in-class reading text and divided students into different Hogwarts teams to perform many interesting story-based group tasks. Students took part with great energy, discussed actively, shared their special thoughts and cooperated well with teammates. For the first time, the classroom was full of inspiration instead of cold rules — they felt seen, heard and valued.
From then on, my classes ran smoothly. The students’ eyes lit up with passion. They grew far more willing to share ideas actively in class, and their academic performance improved noticeably.
My first year of teaching has taught me a precious lesson. Real education never means trapping students in fixed learning modes or asking them to think in the same way. Instead, it requires teachers to leave room for students’ independent thinking and awaken their inner desire for growth. Every student has creative ideas and great potential (潜能), which can be fully developed in a free and open learning environment.
4. What’s the author’s purpose of describing his ideal class?
A. To recall his own school days. B. To prove his teaching ability.
C. To compare with the actual class. D. To describe his favorite students.
5. What was the author’s initial class like?
A. Flexible and open. B. Inactive and boring.
C. Passive and disorderly. D. Creative and relaxing.
6. What did Harry Potter-themed activities bring to the students?
A. Improvement in physical fitness. B. Wide recognition from parents.
C. A sense of identity and belonging. D. The desire to create science fictions.
7. What does the author learn from his teaching experience?
A. Practice makes perfect. B. Early birds catch the worm.
C. Applying knowledge to life is essential. D. Teaching is to inspire engagement.
C 5. B 6. C 7. D

根据第一段“As a young man, I dreamed of my ideal class where students with shining eyes were curious about everything before my first teaching year. (在我第一年教书之前,作为年轻人,我梦想着有这样一个理想班级:学生们目光明亮,对一切都充满好奇。)”和第二段“However, when I took charge of a tenth-grade English class at a New York school, reality struck.(然而,当我在纽约的一所学校负责一个十年级的英语班时,现实给了我一击。)”
根据第三段“At the start of the term, all the students stared blankly at textbooks. They weren’t ready to share their ideas or join in class activities. After observing this discouraging situation for weeks, I realized that strict and rigid (死板的) teaching stopped students creating new ideas and killed their interest in study (开学之初,所有学生都茫然地盯着课本。他们不愿意分享观点,也不愿意参加课堂活动。在观察了这个令人沮丧的情况数周后,我意识到严苛死板的教学阻碍了学生产生新想法,磨灭了他们的学习兴趣)”可推知,作者最初的课堂不活跃,十分无聊。
【6题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段“So I introduced the popular novel Harry Potter as our in-class reading text and divided students into different Hogwarts teams to perform many interesting story-based group tasks. Students took part with great energy, discussed actively, shared their special thoughts and cooperated well with teammates. For the first time, the classroom was full of inspiration instead of cold rules — they felt seen, heard and valued.
根据最后一段“Real education never means trapping students in fixed learning modes or asking them to think in the same way. Instead, it requires teachers to leave room for students’ independent thinking and awaken their inner desire for growth. (真正的教育绝不是把学生困在固定的学习模式中,要求他们用一模一样的方式思考。相反,教育需要教师给学生留出独立思考的空间,唤醒他们内在的成长渴望。)”可推知,作者从这段经历中学到,教学的本质是激发学生主动参与学习,唤醒学生的内驱力。

The Face-down Generation
If you’re reading this, you were probably born in the 2000s. The oh-ohs. The 21st century. That would make you young, creative, connected, global, and no doubt smart. Maybe good-looking, too. Right? But what do other people think about your generation?
Some adults worry that you’re more interested in the screen in front of you than the world around you. They think of you as the “face-down generation” because you use your phone so much and they wonder how you will deal with school, friends, and family. Are today’s teenagers too busy texting and taking selfies (发短信和自拍) to become successful in real life — or “IRL”, as you would say?
Other adults worry that today’s youth are spoilt (宠坏的) and don’t want to face the challenges of adult life. Many children born in the 1990s and 2000s were raised by “helicopter parents”. They were always there to guide and help them with a busy schedule filled with homework and extra-curricular activities such as dancing, drawing, or sports. With parents who do everything for them, today’s youth seem to prefer to live like teenagers even when they are in their 20s or 30s.
Does the face-down generation need a heads-up? Well, probably not. The fact is that many of today’s teenagers are better educated and more creative than past generations. They also seem to be enthusiastic (热情的) and willing to become leaders. More young people than ever volunteer to help their communities. There are also brave young people such as Malala Yousafzai, the teenager who won the 2014 Nobel Peace Prize for pushing girls’ rights to go to school.
So if you’re one of the oh-ohs, there’s reason to be hopeful about the future. Things are looking up for the face-down generation. Chances are that you will do GR8(great) and LOL(laugh out loud).
8. What is the text mainly about?
A. The advantages of the “face-down generation”.
B. The challenges faced by the “face-down generation”.
C. Opinions and facts about the “face-down generation”.
D. The lifestyle of the “face-down generation”.
9. Why are the oh-ohs regarded as the “face-down generation”?
A. Because they use their phones so much.
B. Because they know how to deal with school, friends and family.
C. Because they are busy taking selfies to become successful.
D. Because they are more interested in the world around them.
10. What would a “helicopter parent” do?
A. They do everything for their kids.
B. They give a lot of homework to their kids.
C. They take part in many extra-curricular activities.
D. They would live like teenagers even if they are adults.
11. What would the writer probably agree?
A. The oh-ohs are spoilt. B. The oh-ohs need changes.
C. The oh-ohs are a generation that brings hope. D. The oh-ohs are less creative than the past generations.
C 9. A 10. A 11. C

D
When animals are in danger, they can run away. Trees can’t do that, but they have their own ways to protect themselves. Oak trees, for example, fight back against caterpillars (毛虫) by opening their leaves three days later the year after being badly eaten, according to a new study from Germany’s University of Wurzburg.
Between 2017 and 2021, the scientists used satellites to study six forest sites in Germany. The satellites could see the tree tops clearly, even when it was cloudy. In total, they looked at around 27,500 trees with a total area of 2,400 square kilometers. The year 2019 offered a special research opportunity, as a major outbreak of gypsy moths (吉普赛蛾) hit the country. The satellites recorded how some trees lost all their leaves and how they grew back the next year.
The study found a pattern: If an oak tree lost many leaves to caterpillars, it would open its leaves three days later the next spring. This small delay (延迟) made a big difference, reducing the damage from caterpillars by 55 percent, reported New Scientist. That’s because the caterpillars hatched (孵化) at the same time as the year before, only to find there were no fresh leaves to eat.
Previous studies have also found that some trees use chemicals for self-protection. For example, acacia trees in Africa release special chemicals into their leaves when animals like giraffes try to eat them. Acacia trees also send out chemical signals through the air to warn nearby trees to do the same, according to a Facebook post shared by World Wildlife Day.
12. How do oak trees defend themselves against caterpillars?
A. They grow new leaves three days later.
B. They lose all leaves to stay alive.
C. They send signals to other trees for help.
D. They produce harmful chemicals in leaves.
13. Why did 2019 become a special time for the research?
A. Scientists studied six forest sites.
B. All trees leafed out earlier than usual.
C. A major gypsy moths outbreak occurred in Germany.
D. Satellites performed well on cloudy days.
14. Why does the author mention acacia trees in the last paragraph?
A. To present a different type of defensive strategy.
B. To compare the timeline of various tree responses.
C. To prove that chemical signals travel through air.
D. To show that acacia trees are also attacked by animals.
15. In which part of a magazine is the passage most likely taken from?
A. Travel & Leisure. B. Nature & Science.
C. Health & Medicine. D. Environment & Life.
A 13. C 14. A 15. B

根据原文第二段“The year 2019 offered a special research opportunity, as a major outbreak of gypsy moths hit the country.(2019 年提供了一个特殊的研究契机,因为德国爆发了大规模吉普赛蛾灾害。)”
根据原文第四段“Previous studies have also found that some trees use chemicals for self-protection.(以往研究也发现部分树木依靠化学物质实现自我保护。)”及“For example, acacia trees in Africa release special chemicals into their leaves when animals like giraffes try to eat them.(例如,当长颈鹿这类动物啃食非洲金合欢树时,树木会在叶片中释放特殊化学物质。)”
根据第一段“When animals are in danger, they can run away. Trees can’t do that, but they have their own ways to protect themselves.(动物遇到危险时可以逃跑。树木却做不到,但它们拥有专属的自保方法。)”及全文内容可知,全文围绕树木自我保护的科学研究展开,属于自然与科学类内容,最可能出自杂志的自然科学板块。

Ways to Turn Classmates into Study Partners
Many students worry about balancing study and social life. They fear that focusing too much on grades will make them lonely, but spending too much time with friends brings guilt (惭愧). However, this isn’t an either-or choice. ____16____.
● Redefine relationships to be task-oriented
Instead of chatting for hours, turn your peers into study partners. For example, form a small group to share difficult questions. ____17____. This satisfies social needs while improving grades, so you won’t feel guilty.
● Use tiny moments to stay connected
You don’t need long hangouts. Use the 10-minute breaks or walk to the cafeteria together. ____18____. These little moments don’t waste time, and they can actually help you feel good. A few words with a friend between classes is enough to lighten things up.
● ____19____
When you study, stay offline. If a friend sends a message that’s not urgent, just reply later. True friends respect your pace. If they get upset, it might just be that they’re used to quick replies but good friends will understand when you need to concentrate.
● Accept the ups and downs of friendships
It’s natural that some friendships fade while new ones grow. You don’t have to force yourself to keep pace with everyone. Instead, treasure those who cheer you on.
Remember, the goal isn’t about chasing a perfect balance, but about making things work together. Let your peers be a source of support, and let your studies be a shared journey that builds mutual respect. ____20____.
A. Such an approach turns social time into productive study time
B. It’s the small, regular moments that really matter
C. Set clear limits for study and social time
D. Put your own needs first, like an oxygen mask
E. Accept that friendships change over time
F. Try these tips and find what works for you

Once upon a time, there was a young girl named Emma. She lived in a small town in England, where life was quiet and simple. Emma was fascinated by languages. She spent hours reading books and listening to foreign songs, hoping that one day she could speak many different languages.
One summer, Emma’s family decided to go on a trip to a faraway country. It was a place Emma had never heard of before. When they arrived, Emma was immediately struck by how different everything was. The people spoke a language she had never heard, and the words sounded beautiful, but strange. She tried to understand, but nothing made sense. It was so different from anything she had learned before, and Emma felt a bit lost.
One day, as Emma walked through the village, she met an old man named Mr. Liu. He was sitting outside his house, smiling at everyone who passed by. When Emma saw him, she shyly waved and said, “Hello.” Mr. Liu smiled back and said, “Hello, young lady. Are you new here?” Emma nodded. “I am learning your language, but it’s so difficult,” she said sadly. Mr. Liu chuckled softly and said, “Language is like a key. The more you practise, the easier it becomes to open the door to the new world.”
Mr. Liu offered to teach Emma a few words every day. Emma was excited but also nervous. What if she couldn’t learn as fast as she wanted? The next day, Mr. Liu began with simple words: “hello” “thank you” and “goodbye”. Emma repeated after him, carefully copying the sounds, but it wasn’t easy. She kept making mistakes, and every time she did, she felt embarrassed.
That evening, Emma couldn’t hide her disappointment. Mr. Liu noticed her sadness and smiled gently and placed a hand on her shoulder. “Don’t be upset,” he said. “Learning a language is not about perfection. It’s about communication. You are doing well, and with each mistake, you are learning more. Think about how you learned your first language — you didn’t learn it overnight. It takes time.”
(1)续写词数应为150左右;
Paragraph 1: The next day, Emma decided to try again. She met Mr. Liu and __________________46__________________ (耐心地复习了他们之前练习过的单词). This time, Emma spoke slowly and carefully, determined to get them right. As she walked through the village, she gathered the courage to greet a shopkeeper in the local language. To her surprise, the woman smiled warmly and responded, making Emma feel a little more confident. Mr. Liu nodded approvingly, saying, “See? __________________47__________________ (每向前迈出一步都会让你离理解更进一步).”
Paragraph 2: By the end of the summer, Emma could hold simple conversations with the locals. __________________48__________________ (她可以询问路线、在集市上点菜,甚至讲述有关自己家乡的故事). The villagers appreciated her efforts, treating her as one of their own. As she packed her bags to leave, she thanked Mr. Liu, who reminded her, “The key to language is not just words — it’s connection.” As Emma waved goodbye, she knew this was only the beginning. __________________49__________________ (艾玛挥手告别时,她明白这仅仅是个开始). Language was not just something to study — it was a door to new friendships, experiences, and worlds waiting to be explored. __________________50__________________ (它是一扇通往新友谊、新体验以及有待探索的世界的门户).
46. patiently reviewed the words (that) they had practised before
47. Every step forward brings you closer to understanding
48. She could ask for directions, order food at the market, and even tell stories about her hometown
49. As Emma waved goodbye, she knew this was only the beginning
50. It was a door to new friendships, new experiences, and worlds waiting to be explored
表示“每向前迈出一步”为every step forward;表示“让你离理解更进一步”为brings you closer to understanding。
主语为she;表示“询问路线”为ask for directions,且could后跟动词原形;表示“在集市上点菜”为order food at the market;表示“讲述关于自己家乡的故事”为tell stories about her hometown。
时候”用as;表示“艾玛挥手告别”为Emma wave goodbye;主句主语为she,表示“明白这仅仅是个开始”为know this was only the beginning,发生在过去用一般过去时,所以wave使用过去式waved, know使用knew。
It be a door to...,发生在过去用一般过去时;表示“新友谊、新体验”为new friendships, new experiences;表示“有待探索的世界”为worlds waiting to be explored,现在分词作后置定语。

90-100, A; 80-89, B; 70-79, C; 60-69, D; Below 60, E.
Essays (60%)
Your four major essays will combine to form the main part of the grade for this course: Essay 1 = 10%; Essay 2 = 15%; Essay 3 = 15%; Essay 4 = 20%.
Group Assignments (30%)
Daily assignments not completed during class will get a zero. Short writings missed as a result of an excused absence will be accepted.

C
