One Sunday, Nicholas, a teenager, went skiing at Sugarloaf Mountain in Maine. In the early afternoon, when he was planning to go home, a fierce snowstorm swept the area. Unable to see far, he accidentally turned off the path. Before he knew it, Nicholas was lost, all alone! He didn’t have food, water or a phone. He was getting colder by the minute.
Nicholas had no idea where he was. He tried not to panic. He thought about all the survival shows he had watched on TV. It was time to put the tips he had learned to use.
He decided to stop skiing. There would be a better chance of someone finding him if he stayed put. The first thing he did was to seek shelter from the freezing wind and snow. If he didn’t, his body temperature would get very low, which could quickly kill him. Using his skis, Nicholas built a snow cave. He gathered a huge mass of snow and dug a hole in the middle. Then he piled branches on top of himself, like a blanket, to stay as warm as he could.
By that evening, Nicholas was really hungry. He ate snow and drank water from a nearby stream so that his body wouldn’t lose too much water. Not knowing how much longer he could last, Nicholas huddled (蜷缩) in his cave and slept.
The next day, Nicholas went out to look for help, but he couldn’t find anyone. He had to follow his tracks and return to the snow cave. On Tuesday, Nicholas went out again to seek help. He had walked for about a mile when a volunteer searcher found him. Having been stuck in the snow for two days, Nicholas was saved.
Had it not been for TV, Nicholas might not have survived this snowstorm. He had often watched Bear Grylls’ survival show Man vs. Wild. That’s where he learned the tips that saved his life. There are various ways in which to read body language so that you can understand how someone is feeling. Reading emotional clues is one of them.
Crying is considered to be caused by an explosion of emotion in most cultures. Oftentimes crying is considered a sign of sadness, but crying can also be an expression of happiness. Crying can also come about through laughter and humor. Thus, when judging crying, you’ll need to look for other signs to determine the meaning of the crying. Crying can also be forced in order to gain sympathy or to cheat others. This practice is known as “crocodile tears”, an expression that draws on the wrong idea that crocodiles “cry” when catching prey (猎物).
Signs of threat include V-shaped eyebrows, wide eyes, and an open or down-turned mouth. In a similar way, arms tightly crossed over the other is a common sign that the person is angry and is closing himself off to you.
When people show anxiety, they display increased facial movements, and their mouths are pressed into a thin line. Individuals who are anxious may also play with their hands, unable to keep them in one spot. Besides, anxious people may unconsciously tap their feet or have restless legs.
Embarrassment can be expressed by turning the eyes or shifting them away. If someone looks down at the floor a lot, they are probably shy, afraid, or embarrassed. People also tend to look down when they are upset or trying to hide something emotional. People are often thinking and feeling unpleasant emotions when they are in the process of staring at the ground.
There are also some signs of pride. People show pride by displaying a small smile, holding their head backward, and putting their hands on their hips.
18. In what situation may one have “crocodile tears”?
A. When he is sad. B. When he cheats others.
C. When he supports others. D. When he is angry.
19. What might a man do when angry?
A. Shape his eyebrows into a “w”. B. Sigh heavily.
C. Cross his arms tightly. D. Open his eyes wide.
20. What do we know about the emotional clues in the passage?
A. Most of them show negative feelings.
B. They usually express positive emotions.
C. They can be controlled well by humans.
D. They are good for people’s health.
21. What is the best title for the passage?
A. How to use body languages? B. What are body languages?
C. What expressive emotions do we have? D. How to read emotional clues?
D
Around 40 million tons of electronic waste, known as e-waste, is produced every year. This includes electrical or electronic equipment that has been discarded. But where does it all go? In the US alone, 100 million mobile phones, 41 million computers and over 20 million televisions are thrown into landfills (垃圾填埋场) in a year. Even for standard waste this is a big headache, because any materials that are buried in the ground can’t be easily recovered and recycled. Recycling electronics can save energy and means that less of Earth’s natural resources need to be mined.
Failing to recycle e-waste is extremely damaging the environment due to the nature of the materials used in modern devices. While heavy metals and chemicals improve a device’s safety and user experience, they become poisonous if they’re not dealt with properly. Your old phones, Gameboys, kettles, microwaves and more can end up in landfills, leaking their harmful contents into the soil, water and air. Not only does this kill wildlife and destroy ecosystems, but the accumulation (累积) of poison can impact human health too. As heavy metals and chemicals flow into lakes and rivers, drinking water becomes polluted. These poisons spread through the soil, impacting the health of crops and animals that people also rely on.
In some western countries, e-waste isn’t hidden out of sight in landfills but is burnt in giant, open junkyards. They even ship waste electronics to other countries to deal with, and this often ends up in dumps across Africa and Asia. Workers in these places are exposed to polluted lands and chemical gas.
It is urgent that we should reduce the damaging and unsustainable side of e-waste production. Rare earth metals, some plastics and chemicals can be fed into the next generation of electronics. The steps to proper recycling of e-waste are extensive and need large investment, but more and more countries around the world are turning to e-waste recycling.
22. What does the underlined word “discarded” in Paragraph 1 mean?
A. Repaired. B. Protected. C. Used. D. Abandoned.
23. What can be learned from Paragraph 2?
A. E-waste has a permanent effect on the environment.
B. E-waste may do harm to both ecosystems and humans.
C. Heavy metals and chemicals are poisonous to the users.
D. Burying e-waste into landfills is an effective way to recycle.
24. How does the author describe the handling of e-waste in Western countries?
A. By providing data. B. By asking questions.
C. By listing examples. D. By offering a definition.
25. What might the author continue to talk about?
A. Solutions to destroying e-waste. B. Ways to recycle e-waste properly.
C. Applications of recycled materials. D. Investments in restoring ecosystems.

B 19. C 20. A 21. D

根据第二段中“Crying can also come about through laughter and humor.
根据第三段中“In a similar way, arms tightly crossed over the other is a common sign that the person is angry and is closing himself off to you.
根据文章大意以及第一段“There are various ways in which to read body language so that you can understand how someone is feeling. Reading emotional clues is one of them. (有多种方式可以解读肢体语言,从而了解一个人的情绪状态。其中一种方法就是解读情绪线索。)”可知,文章开篇点明“解读情绪线索是读懂肢体语言的方式之一”,后文依次介绍了哭泣、愤怒、焦虑、尴尬、骄傲等多种情绪对应的肢体表现,核心围绕“如何通过肢体信号解读情绪线索”展开,由此可知,这篇文章最好的标题是“如何解读情感线索?”。
D 23. B 24. C 25. B

根据第一段“This includes electrical or electronic equipment that has been discarded. But where does it all go? In the US alone, 100 million mobile phones, 41 million computers and over 20 million televisions are thrown into landfills (垃圾填埋场) in a year. (这包括被discarded的电气或电子设备。但它们都去哪儿了呢?仅在美国,每年就有1亿部手机、4100万台电脑和2000多万台电视机被扔进垃圾填埋场)”可知,每年都有大量的电气或电子设备被扔进垃圾填埋场,这些设备都是被丢弃的,所以discarded意思是“丢弃”,与“Abandoned”意思相近。故选D。
【23题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段“Failing to recycle e-waste is extremely damaging the environment due to the nature of the materials used in modem devices.
根据第三段“In some western countries, e-waste isn’t hidden out of sight in landfills but is burnt in giant, open junkyards. They even ship waste electronics to other countries to deal with, and this often ends up in dumps across Africa and Asia. Workers in these places are exposed to polluted lands and chemical gas.
根据最后一段“It is urgent that we should reduce the damaging and unsustainable side of e-waste production. Rare earth metals, some plastics and chemicals can be fed into the next generation of electronics. The steps to proper recycling of e-waste are extensive and need large investment, but more and more countries around the world are turning to e-waste recycling.

Ranking My Weekend Priorities
To make the most of our weekends, I rank Rest, Study, and Volunteering as my top priorities.
Rest comes first. After a tiring week of study, adequate sleep and relaxation are essential to recharge our bodies and minds. Without good rest, we can’t study efficiently. Study ranks second. Weekends offer precious time to review what we’ve learned and prepare for the coming week, helping us stay on track academically. Volunteering is third. Participating in community service not only broadens our horizons but also teaches us social responsibility.
In short, a balanced weekend leads to a better high school life.
