A
①In the South China Sea, there is a group of Jiaoren, whose tears become pearls (珍珠) after they fall. To the north of Kunlun Mountains, there is monster called Xiangliu, which has nine heads with human faces but the body of a snake. These magic creatures are from the ancient book of Shan Hai Jing.
②Shan Hai Jing, also known as The Classic of Mountains and Seas, is said to be at least 2,200 years old. It is about the culture and geography of China before the Qin dynasty. It has 31,000 words, more or less. The whole collection includes eighteen parts, talking about more than 550 mountains and 300 seas. It also tells many interesting stories and describes lots of mysterious creatures.
③A famous story in the book is about Zhu Rong, the God of Fire. He is described as having a animal-like body and a human face, riding around the sky on two dragons. When he had a big fight with Gong Gong, the God of Water, Zhu Rong won. But after the terrible fight, the human world fell into complete darkness. Then he brought fire from heaven down to the world and taught humans how to use it to live better.
④Another famous story recorded in the book is Feibao, which in another chapter is named Mo. It is described as a black-and-white monster that likes eating iron. It also goes by the nickname “the Iron Eater”. Experts believe this mysterious creature might be the giant panda we all love today.
⑤Although it’s still not clear who wrote it and finished the whole book, the Shan Hai Jing is one of the most important ancient books from pre-Qin China and is considered a priceless treasure of Chinese culture. The wonderful stories inside the book have been passed down from one generation to another in China for thousands of years. This great ancient work has inspired many famous people including the Chinese writer Lu Xun and the Harry Potter creator J.K. Rowling. Up to now, there are a large number of books, films, video games, and artworks created based on stories from Shan Hai Jing.
1. What has nine heads with human faces but the body of a snake?

C. The importance of Shan Hai Jing.
3. The underlined word “it” in paragraph 3 refers to _______.
A. the book B. the body C. the fire
4. Which of the following about Shan Hai Jing is true?
A. The “Iron Eater” is orange-and-white.
B. It’s not certain who wrote the book.
C. It was completed after Qin Dynasty.
5. Which is the right structure of the passage?

I often catch myself asking my questions to AI chatbots with a “please” and a “thank you.” Clearly, I am not alone. A recent survey found that about 67% of U.S. AI users are also polite and show thanks toward AI. Sam Altman replied: “Tens of millions of dollars were spent — you never know.”
In reality, of course, AI chatbots do not appreciate politeness; they have no feelings or social needs. From a purely utilitarian (功利主义的) standpoint, all those pleases and thank yous are just flushing money down the toilet.
Still, there may be value that isn’t at once measurable in showing thanks toward AI. Psychologists (心理学家) Robert Emmons and Michael McCullough carried out an experiment in which they divided people into three groups, asking the first to list things they are grateful for, while others listed daily troubles or simply kept records. After 10 weeks, they found that the first group reported 25% higher happiness levels, stronger inner strength and even better physical health.
What’s true of thanks is also true of kindness and generosity (慷慨) more generally. Experiments at UC Riverside found that performing “five small acts of kindness per week” produced steady (稳定的) increases in happiness. This idea isn’t new. The ancient thinker Maimonides wrote that “it is better for a person to give one coin to a thousand poor people than to give a thousand coins to one poor person.” He believed that regular acts of goodness, like giving away things and expressing gratitude, make us happier in the long run by turning virtue into a habit.
So perhaps all of our pleases and thank yous to AI have value, even if they cost OpenAI millions of dollars yearly. Showing appreciation, even toward a machine, strengthens positive habits of politeness, patience and empathy (共情). In our increasingly digital world, keeping these human qualities may be more important than the cost of a little extra electricity. Finally, the one who gets the most out of our politeness isn’t the AI at all, but ourselves.
6. How does the author introduce the topic in paragraph 1?
A. By quoting an expert. B. By telling a story. C. By showing a fact.
7. What would a utilitarianist do to AI after seeking help from it?
A. Never say thanks. B. Show appreciation. C. Give it money.
8. What value of thanks does the experiment in paragraph 3 show?
A. It strengthens our bodies and minds.
B. It improves memory and creativity.
C. It deepens social relationships.
9. What does Maimonides’s words mainly stress?
A. We should show goodness on important festivals.
B. One large donation can help more poor people.
C. Small and everyday good actions matter more.
10. What message does the author mainly express in the text?
A. Politeness to AI wastes electricity bills.
B. Politeness benefits humans rather than AI.
C. AI learns empathy from human behavior.

If a child has brown hair and blue eyes, it is highly likely that one or both of the child’s parents share those same features. This is because physical appearance is passed down through genes — the biological instructions stored in our cells. But how about other things? If a parent is shy, then would the child also be shy? Scientists want to know how much a person is determined by genes and how much by the way they are raised.
Scientists study this question by observing identical twins Identical twins are twins that look the same on the outside. They also have the same genes on the inside. By studying twins who were separated at birth and raised in different families, scientists can better understand whether they turn out the same although they have different life experiences. If genes were the only factor, these twins should be identical in every way, even if they grew up thousands of miles apart.
For some things, the answer is yes. The twins turn out to have the same look or disease. Research shows that identical twins often reach similar heights regardless of their diets or lifestyles. Similarly, if one twin is more likely to get a certain disease because of their genes, the other often faces a similar risk, even if one exercises regularly and the other does not. In these cases, how a child is raised seems to have a limited influence on their physical development.
However, as for personality, the answer is not so clear. Some separated twins have completely different personalities and lives as adults. Other separated twins are almost exactly the same. They even have the same jobs, even though they have never met.
In the end, there seems to be no simple answer. As a whole, it seems people become who and what we are because of both genes and how we are raised.
11. What may determine the colors of a child’s hair and eyes?
A. The parents’ education. B. The child’s genes. C. The parents’ health.
12. According to Paragraph 2, how do scientists study the question?
A. By observing identical twins.
B. By interviewing twins’ parents.
C. By doing experiments in the lab.
13. According to the study, what can we know about the separated idenfical twins when they grow up?
A. They never do the same jobs.
B. They always have different looks.
C. They probably are of similar heights.
14. What does the last paragraph mainly talk about?
A. The process of the study B. The result of the study. C. The method of the study
15. Where is the passage probably taken from?
A. A business report. B. A popular novel. C. A science magazine.
D
When we started our online acting course, we got a number of emails and comments saying “You can’t possibly teach acting online!” Though we were proud of what we’d created, we too were doubtful about whether acting could be learnt effectively online. Lake and I, the two teachers of the course, had studied at a top drama school. We had worked on our acting skills day in and day out, and so we knew the value of hands-on training. Maybe learning acting using a smartphone or computer could be difficult or impossible?
However, we persevered.
We started our first course on December 1st, 2021 and students loved it. We have since worked with over 100 students, and found that learning online is not only a workable method, for some actors it’s preferable. We mainly attracted students who had been too shy before to attend an acting class. We found that in the comfort of their own home, many actors felt safe enough to dive headfirst (一头扎进) into their acting. They not only overcame their fears, but they improved. We helped actors in the farthest corners of the earth, who, as long as they had an Internet connection, could get started on their acting.
So after running a number of online acting courses now, I can safely say that it’s without doubt a reasonable way to learn acting. Of course it can’t be done in isolation (孤立). You have to take your knowledge and put it into practice: making your own work, performing and working on your skills daily. It also can’t be a one-off. Even actors who have been in the industry for 20 plus years have to keep training. I recommend exploring all kinds of different training programs and learning from every experience you have as an actor.
16. What was the author’s attitude towards learning acting online at first?
A. Uninterested. B. Hopeful. C. Doubtful.
17. What does the underlined word “persevered” mean in paragraph 2?
A. Didn’t stop. B. Didn’t refuse. C. Didn’t worry.
18. Who are mainly interested in the author’s acting courses?
A. Students from top drama schools.
B. Students who know nothing about acting.
C. Students afraid of acting in front of others.
19. What is important to actors according to the author?
A. Acting practice. B. Social experience. C. Educational background.
20. What question does the passage mainly answer?
A. Can you learn acting online?
B. What are different ways to learn acting?
C. What can online acting courses offer?

In 2013, Alfie Ward’s life was falling apart. A lot of bad things happened: she broke up with her boyfriend, her father was seriously ill, and she didn’t like her job anymore.
At that time, Ward lived in Los Angeles. To forget her troubles, she liked to go hiking and take photos of insects. Sometimes, if she really liked an insect, she would post the photo on social media (媒体). These photos caught the eye of Lila Higgins, an insect expert at the local natural history museum. Higgins invited Ward to visit the museum’s insectary, a place where they keep live insects.
“Most people don’t think this is a fun invitation, but for me, it was great. I loved insects when I was a kid. I really wanted to see some insects,” Ward said.
When Ward got to the museum, Higgins greeted her at the back door. She gave Ward a lab coat and showed her around the exhibits. For the first time in a long time, Ward felt happy. Higgins saw her love for insects and asked her to volunteer at the museum for a few hours every week.
At first, Ward wasn’t sure, but she decided to try. Every Wednesday, she went to the museum. With each volunteer job, she felt better. “It gave me a goal. It helped me get back to my love of science and nature,” Ward said.
Soon, Ward stepped down from her old job and started working in science media. Now she has her own podcast (播客) called Ologies. Higgins was her first guest. “She changed my life. Because of her, I found my old love and did what I really want to do,” Ward said.

根据第一段“To the north of Kunlun Mountains, there is monster called Xiangliu, which has nine heads with human faces but the body of a snake.(昆仑山以北有一种名叫相柳的怪物,长着九个头,头上有人脸,身体却是蛇形)”可知,相柳有九头、人面、蛇身。
根据第二段“Shan Hai Jing, also known as The Classic of Mountains and Seas, is said to be at least 2,200 years old. It is about the culture and geography of China before the Qin dynasty. It has 31,000 words, more or less. The whole collection includes eighteen parts, talking about more than 550 mountains and 300 seas. It also tells many interesting stories and describes lots of mysterious creatures.(Shan Hai Jing,又称The Classic of Mountains and Seas,据说已有至少2200年历史。它记载了秦朝以前中国的文化与地理,全书约三万一千字,共十八卷,记述了五百五十多座山和三百个海洋,还讲述了众多有趣的故事,并描述了许多神秘的生物)”可知,第二段是对《山海经》的总体介绍。
【3题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第三段“Then he brought fire from heaven down to the world and taught humans how to use it to live better.(然后他将天上的火带到人间,并教会人类如何利用它来更好地生活)”可知,it指代前文提到的“fire”(火)。
根据第五段“Although it’s still not clear who wrote it and finished the whole book, the Shan Hai Jing is one of the most important ancient books from pre-Qin China and is considered a priceless treasure of Chinese culture.(尽管至今尚不清楚是谁撰写了这本书并完成了全书,但《山海经》是中国先秦时期最重要的古代典籍之一,被视为中华文化的无价瑰宝)”可知,谁写了这本书尚不确定,B选项“不确定是谁写了这本书”正确。

B. Politeness benefits humans rather than AI.
C. AI learns empathy from human behavior.
6. C 7. A 8. A 9. C 10. B
根据第一段“I often catch myself asking my questions to AI chatbots with a “please” and a “thank you.” Clearly, I am not alone. A recent survey found that about 67% of U.S. AI users are also polite and show thanks toward AI. (我经常发现自己用“请”和“谢谢”向人工智能聊天机器人提问。显然,我并不孤单。最近的一项调查发现,大约67%的美国人工智能用户也对人工智能保持礼貌并表达感谢)”可知,作者是通过展示客观事实(调查数据)来引入话题的。
【7题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段“From a purely utilitarian (功利主义的) standpoint, all those pleases and thank yous are just flushing money down the toilet. (从纯粹功利主义的角度来看,所有这些“请”和“谢谢”都只是在浪费钱)”可知,功利主义者认为向AI表达感谢是浪费资源,因此功利主义者不会表达感谢。
【8题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“After 10 weeks, they found that the first group reported 25% higher happiness levels, stronger inner strength and even better physical health. (10周后,他们发现第一组人的幸福水平提高了25%,内心力量更强,甚至身体健康状况也更好)”可知,该实验表明表达感谢能强化身心。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段“He believed that regular acts of goodness, like giving away things and expressing gratitude, make us happier in the long run by turning virtue into a habit. (他相信,像捐赠物品和表达感激这样的日常善行,从长远来看会通过让美德成为习惯使我们更快乐)”可知,Maimonides的话主要强调日常善行能养成美德习惯,长期带来幸福。因此,日常的小善举更重要。
【10题详解】
主旨大意题。根据最后一段“Finally, the one who gets the most out of our politeness isn’t the AI at all, but ourselves.(最后,从我们的礼貌中获益最多的根本不是人工智能,而是我们自己)”可知,作者主要想表达对AI的礼貌实际上让人类自己受益。

根据第一段“If a child has brown hair and blue eyes, it is highly likely that one or both of the child’s parents share those same features.(如果一个孩子有棕色头发和蓝色眼睛,那么他或她的一位或两位父母很可能也拥有相同的特征)”可知,决定孩子头发和眼睛颜色的是基因,而非父母的教育或健康。
根据第三段“For some things, the answer is yes. The twins turn out to have the same look or disease. Research shows that identical twins often reach similar heights regardless of their diets or lifestyles. Similarly, if one twin is more likely to get a certain disease because of their genes, the other often faces a similar risk, even if one exercises regularly and the other does not. In these cases, how a child is raised seems to have a limited influence on their physical development.(对于某些情况,答案是肯定的。
根据最后一段“In the end, there seems to be no simple answer. As a whole, it seems people become who and what we are because of both genes and how we are raised.(最终,似乎并没有简单的答案。总体而言,人们成为什么样的人和拥有怎样的特质,既取决于基因,也取决于我们成长的方式)”可知,最后一段主要谈论了研究的结果。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段“Scientists study this question by observing identical twins (同卵双胞胎). Identical twins are twins that look the same on the outside. They also have the same genes on the inside. By studying twins who were separated at birth and raised in different families, scientists can better understand whether they turn out the same although they have different life experiences. If genes were the only factor, these twins should be identical in every way, even if they grew up thousands of miles apart.(科学家通过观察同卵双胞胎来研究这个问题。同卵双胞胎在外观上完全相同,体内也拥有相同的基因。通过研究出生时被分离并成长于不同家庭的双胞胎,科学家可以更好地理解:尽管他们的人生经历不同,但是否最终会变得一模一样。如果基因是唯一决定因素,那么即使这些双胞胎长大后相隔数千英里,他们也应该在各方面完全一致)”以及文章探讨基因和环境对个体特征的影响,属于科学类话题,很可能出自科学杂志。

16. C 17. A 18. C 19. A 20. A

The whole month of June sees community gatherings, street carnivals (狂欢) and school activities all in celebration of this fruitful season. ____21____.
Since early June, I have overheard many locals talking about their preparations for these get-togethers, where eating and dancing have always been the central activities. Noticing festive decorations (装饰) going up in the nearby park, it suddenly hit me that I could take this wonderful chance to get a firsthand experience of the special local culture.
Encouraged by my students’ lively descriptions about the festival, I went to the weekend party together with two equally curious workmates. Upon arrival, I noticed the party was decorated with cute, colorful flags and lanterns. Every second spent at this energetic Festa Junina celebration was so unforgettable. Local musicians played forró, a special folk music, and people on the dance floor invited each other to dance freely.

Volunteering: To Give and To Get
Good morning, everyone! I’m glad to share my volunteering experience with you.
Just like Ward, who found new purpose through volunteering at a museum, I also believe that giving our time to help others can bring unexpected rewards. Every weekend, I volunteer at a local community library, helping young children with their reading and organizing storytelling sessions. I do this because I want to share the joy of books and give back to my community.
From this experience, I have gained a lot. I have improved my communication skills by interacting with kids, and I feel a strong sense of achievement when I see their smiles. Most importantly, volunteering helps me understand that by giving to others, we also receive a better version of ourselves.
Thank you for listening!
