By the time Nalin Kamat was 13, the Toronto teen was well on his way to becoming a working artist. He had already had his first show at a local art centre, showcasing his series titled “Dispositions”, which illustrated his own growth during adolescence (青少年).
Yet he wanted more — specifically to start showing his work in a juried exhibition, where a group of art experts would evaluate and select pieces in a competitive review process. That’s when he hit an obstacle, discovering in the very last line of a multi-page application that the minimum age for submission was 18.
That rejection became a motivation for creation. “I thought it’d be really cool if I could provide the opportunity to more young artists,” says Nalin. With the support of his parents, Nalin rented a storefront and founded Little EGG Gallery, which is now profitable enough to make ends meet by charging a small hanging fee for any displayed work. In turn, Little EGG helps promote young talent by showcasing their work.
Not long after opening, David Griffin, a professor and artist of Ontario College of Art and Design University, stepped into the gallery and met Nalin. Griffin regards him as someone special: “a strong young artist with a really excellent idea — creating a space for showing the natural genius of young people. It was a void (空白) in the art world.” There Nalin asked Griffin to help judge an upcoming competition. The first juried show was last spring, and five-year-old Jack Gamble won for his abstract painting titled Pokemon.
As Nalin is busy with school, life and his own art, Little EGG is mostly open by appointment only, but he’s still committed to growing it with seasonal and themed shows scheduled a few times a year.
4. What do we know about Nalin Kamat from the first two paragraphs?
A. He became a working artist when aged 13. B. He drew other teenagers’ growth in his work.
C. He showed his series at the capital art centre. D. He was not qualified for a juried exhibition.
5. Why did Nalin decide to set up Little EGG Gallery?
A. To form the connection between different galleries.
B. To promote artists by showcasing their work.
C. To show young artists’ talent by offering them a stage.
D. To expand his own business through themed shows.
6. Which of the following can best describe Nalin’s idea of opening the gallery?
A. Short-lived. B. Pioneering.
C. Unpromising. D. Popular.
7. What kind of person is Nalin Kamat according to the text?
A. Devoted and creative. B. Helpful and cautious.
C. Knowledgeable and ambitious. D. Humorous and intelligent.
C
The grammar school boy from Stratford-Upon-Avon has made headlines again after a groundbreaking study showed that Shakespeare does benefit children’s literacy and emotional development, but only if they can act him out.
The study found that a drama-based approach to teaching Shakespeare broadened children’s vocabulary, improved the quality of their writing, and improved their emotional understanding. “The way actors work makes a big difference to how children use language and how they think about themselves,” said Jacqui O’Hanlon, lead researcher of the study.
The study involved hundreds of Year 5 pupils (aged nine and ten) from 45 state primary schools. They were divided into a target group and a control group. Both groups were asked to read a passage from Romeo and Juliet and write a letter as Romeo after being apart from Juliet. The only difference was that the target group first took part in a 30-minute drama-based activity, while the control group did not.
It was shown that pupils in the target group drew on a wider vocabulary, used more complicated or rarer words, and wrote at greater length. They also appeared more comfortable writing in role. While pupils in the control group imagined how they themselves would react to being separated from a loved one, children in the target group put themselves in Romeo’s shoes and expressed that character’s emotion.
O’Hanlon said she had been most surprised by the emotional understanding shown in the children’s writing, and that they expressed deeper empathy and expressed emotions more vividly. “It is probably related to the drama-based process, where you are used to trying to think and feel as the character,” she added.
But could the results be reproduced with any old dramatists? O’Hanlon said more research would be needed. However, she pointed out Shakespeare’s unique value: his 20,000-word vocabulary gives children a huge language improvement. Only when they act the words out with their whole bodies does this effect come to life.
8. How can children benefit from Shakespeare’s works based on the study?
A. By rewriting Shakespeare’s plays. B. By performing Shakespeare’s works.
C. By learning Shakespeare’s lines by heart. D. By watching professional acting on stage.
9. What can be inferred about the target group in the study?
A. They wrote shorter texts but expressed more emotions.
B. They struggled with Shakespeare’s difficult vocabulary.
C. They preferred writing about their own personal experiences.
D. They could understand and express characters’ feelings better.
10. What did O’Hanlon think of the target group’s emotional depth?
A. Impressive. B. Ordinary. C. Disappointing. D. Confusing.
11. What can be learned from the text?
A. Practice makes perfect. B. Reading makes a full man.
C. Learning by doing works best. D. Actions speak louder than words.
D
In nature, muscles never work alone. They are closely connected with the nervous system, which allows living things to feel the weight and shape of the objects they touch. To copy this amazing ability in robots, however, scientists usually have to fix heavy, separate sensors onto moving parts. This traditional method not only makes robots heavy and slow, but also delays their reactions. Across industries like humanoid (人形的) robotics and medical devices, there has been a continuous demand for a new class of smart driving materials to overcome these challenges.
Recently, a research team has solved this problem by creating a new “smart muscle” that can move and feel at the same time. Inspired by human tendons (肌腱), the team put tiny liquid metal channels directly into a flexible material called liquid crystal elastomer (LCE). This single structure connects two parts with different material properties in series, performing the roles of tendon and muscle respectively. When electricity passes through the liquid metal, heat is generated, causing the material to shrink (收缩) like a real muscle.
More importantly, when the material changes its shape during movement, the paths of the liquid metal channels inside are also changed. This directly changes the electrical resistance of the system. By monitoring these small electrical changes, the system can sense its own strength and movement length immediately, without using any outside sensors. This clever design allows robots to process movement commands and sensory response within one single material, realizing physical intelligence.
During laboratory tests, robotic fingers equipped with these smart muscles gently picked up easily-broken objects without breaking them. Even better, by setting up two artificial muscles as a competing pair operating in opposite directions, the system could automatically determine the hardness and size of different objects based only on the electrical signals from the muscle itself.
This breakthrough is very helpful for making future humanoid robots and artificial limbs (假肢). The next challenge for researchers is to improve the structure and active cooling technologies to pick up the cooling speed of the artificial muscle, making the production process smaller for daily use.
12. What is the main limitation of traditional robots?
A. Complex power supply. B. High production costs.
C. Slower reaction speed. D. Hard structural materials.
13. Why does the author use “More importantly” in paragraph 3?
A. To highlight the sensing process. B. To introduce an up-to-date material.
C. To explain the cause of heat generation. D. To contrast human and robotic tendons.
14. What does the robotic-finger experiment prove?
A. The flexibility of soft materials. B. The clever design of the system.
C. The sensitivity of electric signals. D. The softness of natural objects.
15. What is the immediate challenge for the researchers?
A. Improving the muscle strength. B. Speeding up the heating process.
C. Producing robots for daily use. D. Downsizing the production process.

How to Deal with a Social Loafer
A “social loafer” is someone in a group who puts less effort into a shared task than expected. ____16____ When you spot a social loafer, what can you do?
● Understand “deindividuation”.
“Deindividuation” refers to a loss of self-awareness and accountability in a group. ____17____ In the bystander effect, for instance, the presence of many people may weaken one’s sense of responsibility. Smaller-scale examples could include situations in friendship groups where someone may not step up to group tasks. Understanding “deindividuation” helps you recognise the psychological state behind a social loafer’s behaviour.
● ____18____
Researchers have established that there are two factors that drive an individual’s motivation: the individual’s expectations about achieving the goal and the perceived value of the goal. With this in mind, if there’s someone in your life who tends towards social loafing, highlighting the goal of what you want to achieve together could be a way of getting through to them.
● Set the tone.
____19____ If someone feels as though others in the group are loafing, they will also lower their effort to match. So keeping the enthusiasm up, and demonstrating your own commitment to achieving the shared goal, could be the key to motivating your social loafer.
● Be honest about how it’s impacting you.
If someone’s loafing is affecting you, it’s always worth taking the time to be honest about how you’re feeling. ____20____ So, use this as a reminder to tune in to one another, reconnect, and get honest about what you need. When we’re all putting in effort, the load gets a lot lighter for everyone.
A. Our energy is infectious.
B. Help them find motivation.
C. Make clear rules for everyone.
D. They may have different strengths.
E. This might occur in larger group settings.
F. Even those who work hard on their own may behave this way.
G. After all, this behaviour often comes from a sense of disconnection.

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面的材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
It was the day of the big science fair. Students from seven different primary schools in and around the small town were setting up their projects and reviewing their presentations. I looked around and finally spotted Lily, who was standing by herself off to the side by a bookshelf. She was small for her age. Her usual bright-eyed enthusiasm was absent today. I walked over and asked her why she wasn’t with the other children. She hesitated and then said she had decided not to present.
What was wrong? She had worked so hard for this event!
I quickly searched the crowd for the school’s science teacher and asked him what had happened. “I was afraid that kids from other schools would make fun of her project,” he explained uncomfortably. “I gave her the choice to present or not, and let her decide.”
I bit back my frustration. I knew the teacher meant well — he thought he was doing the right thing. After making sure that Lily could present if she wanted, I turned to find her coming towards me, her small body carrying a science project that reflected her hard work and dedication.
Lily had a speech impediment which prevented her from speaking as clearly as other children, but at school her classmates thought of her as a regular kid. She always participated to the best of her ability in whatever they were doing. That was why none of the children thought it unusual that Lily had decided to join the science fair team. It just took her longer — that’s all. Lily had not missed a single practice, and although she always finished her presentation long after the other children, she did always finish. As a special education teacher at the school, I was familiar with the challenges Lily faced and was proud of her strong determination.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
We sat down next to each other, but Lily wouldn’t look at me.
_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
I watched as Lily stepped up to the podium with the other presenters.

【答案】8. B 9. D 10. A 11. C

【答案】16. F 17. E 18. B 19. A 20. G

【导语】本文介绍了应对团队中社会惰化现象的几种办法,包括理解心理成因、激发成员动力、营造良好氛围以及坦诚沟通,促进团队协作。
【16题详解】
根据上文“A “social loafer” is someone in a group who puts less effort into a shared task than expected.(“社交懒人”指的是在一个群体中,那些在共同任务上投入的努力少于预期水平的人)”以及后文“When you spot a social loafer, what can you do?(当你发现一个“社交懒虫”时,你可以怎么做呢?)”
根据上文““Deindividuation” refers to a loss of self-awareness and accountability in a group.(“去个性化”指的是在群体中出现的自我意识丧失和责任意识缺失的现象)”以及后文“In the bystander effect, for instance, the presence of many people may weaken one’s sense of responsibility. Smaller-scale examples could include situations in friendship groups where someone may not step up to group tasks. Understanding “deindividuation” helps you recognise the psychological state behind a social loafer’s behaviour.(例如,在旁观者效应中,众多人的在场可能会削弱个人的责任感。更小规模的例子可能包括在朋友群体中,有人可能不会主动承担集体任务的情况。理解“去个性化”有助于你理解社交懒汉行为背后的心理状态)”可知,本段解释“去个性化”(群体中个人责任感丧失),空后先举大群体的“旁观者效应”例子,再举小群体的例子。E选项“这种情况常发生在大型群体场景中”,完美贴合后文先讲大群体再讲小群体的举例逻辑。

【答案】My family tradition
It’s an honor to talk about my family tradition. I can clearly remember the bright Saturday afternoon 10 years ago, when I accidentally knocked over a neighbor’s flowerpot. Out of fear, I took flight immediately, rushed home and poured the whole thing to my parents. They praised me for my honesty and encouraged me to take responsibility for my fault bravely. Much touched, I went to apologize to my neighbor sincerely.
Surprisingly, instead of blaming me, he gave me a thumbs-up for my honesty, which brought me a great sense of relief and joy. It was at that moment that I realized the power of the family tradition. Actually, honesty and responsibility have been running in our family.
My family tradition has shaped me into a better version of myself and will lead me further.
Thanks for your listening.

第二节(满分25分)

【答案】例文
We sat down next to each other, but Lily wouldn’t look at me. I placed my hand on her shoulder. “Present to the best of your ability. I believe in you.” Her eyes widened. “I’m proud of your perseverance,” I said. She moved her lips but couldn’t articulate a word. “Will you withdraw from the presentation?” “No,” she said, eyes fixed on the podium. “Then go for it!” I encouraged her. Taking a deep breath, she regained her confidence and prepared.
I watched as Lily stepped up to the podium with the other presenters. The presentation began. The audience seemed overwhelming for Lily, who had a speech impediment. Yet she presented as if she had forgotten all her weaknesses. As the other presenters finished, I grew nervous, fearing she might be mocked. Suddenly, her classmates filled the audience, cheering her on. “Come on! We’re proud of you!” they shouted enthusiastically. Eventually, Lily made it. When she was announced as the 18th-place winner, her long-awaited smile returned. Though not the first, she proved herself strong-willed.
