B
During my girlhood, I used to accompany my father to various public events and community discussions. Whatever the occasion, my father always had something to say. He would ask a thoughtful question or make a sharp comment. As a result, I assumed that he knew something about everything.
How could this be? He was certainly an educated man. He was born in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, a neighborhood that was, at the time, simply poor. When a friend applied to a New York high school, he followed suit and was admitted. He went on to earn an undergraduate degree and then, after serving in World War II, earned a Ph.D. in chemistry. It’s an impressive path, but his education had been focused on the sciences; how was it that he knew so much about other things-Stickley furniture and the Battle of Waterloo, for example?
I recently put the question to him. He explained that, as a teenager, he had made a promise to himself to ask a question in any gathering he attended. The exercise had sharpened his ability to listen, speak, and engage with whatever was happening. But his initial motivation, as my father readily admits, was simply to participate in the conversation. He came from a poor background and, though very intelligent, lacked the polish of the more privileged people with whom he came into contact. Asking a question was his way of finding his voice, often in settings where he felt uneasy, and also a way of fitting in. In speaking up, he received acknowledgement, which led to greater confidence, which led to greater participation, and in the end, to greater knowledge.
Ever since my father’s method caught my attention, I have urged my shyer students to follow his example. I tell them to try to speak at least once during a class, if only to ask a question. Doing so helps them acquire a profile in class and involve themselves more deeply. In time, they will contribute to the conversation. And eventually, they may be able to amaze their children with their wide-ranging knowledge.
4. Why does the author mention her father’s educational path?
A. To highlight his academic achievements.
B. To explain why he was interested in science.
C. To contrast his science education with his broad knowledge.
D. To suggest how science contributed to his view on social issues.
5. What’s the father’s initial purpose of asking questions at gatherings?
A. To make himself heard. B. To follow his friend’s example.
C. To improve his communicative skills. D. To impress others with his intelligence.
6. What does the author expect her students to get from the method?
A. A wider range of interests. B. Deeper engagement in learning.
C. Greater confidence in public speaking. D. More recognition from their classmates.
7. What message does the author convey through the text?
A. One simple habit fuels lasting growth.
B. Success relies on seizing every chance.
C. A good teacher learns from students as well.
D. Childhood experiences decide future careers.
C 5. A 6. B 7. A
根据第二段中“He was born in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, a neighborhood that was, at the time, simply poor. When a friend applied to a New York high school, he followed suit and was admitted. He went on to earn an undergraduate degree and then, after serving in World War II, earned a Ph.D. in chemistry. It’s an impressive path, but his education had been focused on the sciences; how was it that he knew so much about other things-Stickley furniture and the Battle of Waterloo, for example?(他出生在布鲁克林的威廉斯堡,当时那一带还十分贫困。当一位朋友申请纽约的一所高中时,他也跟着申请并被录取。之后,他获得了学士学位,二战结束后又取得了化学博士学位。 这是一条令人钦佩的学术之路,但他的教育主要集中在科学领域;那么,他怎么会知道其他方面的事情呢?比如斯蒂克利家具、滑铁卢战役等等?)”可推知,作者提到她父亲的求学经历是为了将单一的理科教育背景与广博的知识面形成对比。
【5题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中“But his initial motivation, as my father readily admits, was simply to participate in the conversation. He came from a poor background and, though very intelligent, lacked the polish of the more privileged people with whom he came into contact. Asking a question was his way of finding his voice, often in settings where he felt uneasy, and also a way of fitting in.(但正如我父亲坦率承认的那样,他最初参与讨论的动机,仅仅是为了融入对话之中。他出身贫寒,虽然非常聪明,却缺乏与他接触的那些出身优渥之人的那种从容与优雅。提问成了他表达自我的方式,常常是在让他感到不自在的场合中,也是一条融入集体的途径。)”可推知,父亲最初在聚会上提问的动机很单纯——参与对话、在场合中找到自己的话语权,让自己被听见,从而融入环境。
【6题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段中“Doing so helps them acquire a profile in class and involve themselves more deeply. In time, they will contribute to the conversation.(这样做有助于他们在课堂上树立形象,更加深入地参与其中。随着时间推移,他们会逐渐参与到讨论中来。)”可知,作者鼓励害羞的学生效仿父亲,课堂上至少开口提一次问题,核心目的是让学生更深入地参与到课堂学习中,从被动倾听转向主动表达、参与对话。
【7题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章大意以及最后一段中“Doing so helps them acquire a profile in class and involve themselves more deeply. In time, they will contribute to the conversation. And eventually, they may be able to amaze their children with their wide-ranging knowledge.(这样做有助于他们在课堂上树立形象,更加深入地参与其中。随着时间推移,他们会逐渐参与到讨论中来。最终,或许还能用自己广博的知识让孩子们大吃一惊。)”可知,全文围绕 “主动提问”这一个简单习惯展开:父亲靠提问的习惯从窘迫融入到收获自信、积累广博知识;作者将这个方法教给学生,帮助他们深度参与学习、持续成长。由此可知,作者通过文章传达了一个微小的习惯可以驱动长期的成长与进步。
C
In recent years, eco-conscious gardening has gained popularity. With so much emphasis on native plants, it is easy to see non-natives as simply a bad choice. However, gardeners say it’s not that simple.
Laura Janney, CEO of The Inspired Garden Masterclass, argues that we miss the big picture by thinking in terms of native vs. non-native and assigning opposing moral labels. Instead, we should define “bad plants” as those that are invasive (入侵的) or damaging to local ecosystems, and “good plants” as those that support pollinators (传粉者), are sustainable, and aren’t invasive. The good plants, she adds, “work well in the garden whether they’re native or not.”
That said, it’s still helpful to understand why non-native plants can be problematic when not planted thoughtfully. “There’s always a risk that a non-native plant can become invasive outside its native range, meaning it could cause negative impacts by out-competing native species for necessities of survival — especially in the absence of its co-evolved organisms feeding on it that otherwise keep its population in check — introducing pests or diseases, or providing low food and habitat value for native wildlife,” says Amy Karpati, Ph.D., senior science advisor at Teatown Lake Reservation.
Since native plants are being grown in their native climate, once established, they can grow with little extra care. As a result, they are widely promoted as the virtuous choice, which can create pressure to turn a garden into a fully native landscape and guilt when that goal isn’t met. However, experts say a 100% native garden is simply not realistic for most people. A 2018 study of Carolina chickadees (山雀) shows that in areas with less than 70% native plant biomass, the birds could not produce enough young to sustain their populations, but thrived at 70% or higher. This has led to the recommendation that homeowners aim for roughly 70% native plants — a goal that supports wildlife while remaining realistic.
“A healthy ecosystem is more important than the pursuit of native purity,” says Shane Pliska, the president and CEO of Planterra. “There is no turning back from the human impact, so we should be more focused on greening our environments with more plants and wooded habitats rather than a historical restoration to what was. Ecosystems evolve.”
8. What does Janney think determines whether a plant is “good” or “bad”?
A. Whether it is native to the area.
B. Whether it can survive with little care.
C. Whether it benefits the local ecosystem.
D. Whether it is popular among local gardeners.
9. How can non-native plants cause problems according to paragraph 3?
A. By attracting co-evolved organisms.
B. By driving away native insect species.
C. By destroying habitats for native wildlife.
D. By taking resources away from native species.
10. What is paragraph 4 mainly about?
A. Risks of uncontrolled plant growth.
B. The superiority of native-only gardens.
C. A proper target for native plant cover.
D. Influences of plants on bird reproduction.
11. What does Pliska imply in the last paragraph?
A. Human impact is far-reaching.
B. A plant’s role outweighs its origin.
C. Native plants have lost their value.
D. Past landscapes should be restored.
C 9. D 10. C 11. B
根据第二段中的“Instead, we should define “bad plants” as those that are invasive (入侵的) or damaging to local ecosystems, and “good plants” as those that support pollinators (传粉者), are sustainable, and aren’t invasive.(相反,我们应当把“坏植物”定义为具有入侵性或者破坏当地生态系统的植物,把“好植物”定义为可以供养传粉者、具备可持续性且没有入侵性的植物。)”
根据第三段中的“There’s always a risk that a non‑native plant can become invasive outside its native range, meaning it could cause negative impacts by out‑competing native species for necessities of survival.(外来植物在原生范围之外总有变成入侵物种的风险,这意味着它会通过和本土物种争夺生存必需品而造成负面影响。)”
根据第四段中的“This has led to the recommendation that homeowners aim for roughly 70% native plants — a goal that supports wildlife while remaining realistic.(这就给出一项建议:住宅园艺目标大约配置百分之七十本土植物,该目标既可以支持野生动物生存,又具备现实可行性。)”
通读最后一段,尤其是最后一段中的““A healthy ecosystem is more important than the pursuit of native purity,” says Shane Pliska, the president and CEO of Planterra. “There is no turning back from the human impact, so we should be more focused on greening our environments with more plants and wooded habitats rather than a historical restoration to what was. Ecosystems evolve.”(“健康的生态系统比追求纯粹本土物种更加重要,”普兰特拉公司总裁兼首席执行官谢恩·普利斯卡说道。人类造成的影响已经无法逆转,因此我们应当更多关注用更多植物与林地栖息地绿化环境,而不是复原过去的样貌。生态系统是不断演化的。)”可知,Pliska暗示植物发挥的实际作用比它的来源更加重要。
D
AI is already a part of childhood. While chatbots stand ready to answer questions like, “Are monsters real?” or “Why is the sky blue?”, companies are racing to embed AI into kids’ toys. Take Teddy, a robotic teddy bear that, more than just a toy, can walk, talk, make decisions, and respond to children’s needs and emotions.
In the new book, Human Raised: Nurturing Connection, Curiosity, & Lifelong Learning in the Age of AI, author Dana Suskind, a professor at the University of Chicago Medical Center, acknowledges that the technology makes sci-fi concepts plausible, offering promise as, for example, a productivity enhancer and time-saver for parents, a monitoring and research tool to collect valuable data on child development, and an interactive instructor helping some kids learn.
But what happens if AI begins replacing the kinds of human interactions that young brains evolved to learn from? Alarms seem to overshadow the conveniences. Suskind cites the research by developmental psychologist Patricia K. Kuhl, who proposed the “social gate” hypothesis (假说) -the idea that children’s brains are biologically wired to learn through social interaction. Studies have shown, for example, that babies learn language much better from a live person than from a screen because social interactions engage the brain in ways passive media do not. The sing-song way parents naturally speak to babies, smiles, gentle touch and back-and-forth exchanges all appear to help open that social gate, facilitating learning and healthy brain development.
“If we want children to be able to think critically, to be able to navigate the human world, we’re going to need to make sure that kids have a distinctly human-raised early childhood,” Suskind insists. AI toy companies, however, have different priorities. While those toys may imitate human interaction, Suskind argues they cannot recreate everything that makes human relationships developmentally valuable.
Human relationships are messy and filled with emotions, which involve misunderstandings, frustration, quarrels, as well as forgiveness and reconnection. Interestingly, Suskind compares AI relationships to ultra-processed food. “If all you eat is fruit snacks, which are a synthetic (合成的) version of fruit, when you actually eat the real fruit, you will be like, ‘Hmm, it’s not quite as sweet,’” she says.
12. What does the underlined word “plausible” mean in paragraph 2?
A. Strikingly popular. B. Increasingly vital. C. Difficult to understand. D. Possible in reality.
13. What does the “social gate” hypothesis help explain?
A. Social interaction is essential to early learning.
B. AI technology is equally helpful in children’s learning.
C. Passive media activate children’s brains for efficient learning.
D. Children are born with the ability to learn from surroundings.
14. What does the comparison with ultra-processed food suggest?
A. AI can interpret rich human emotions.
B. Human relationships seem more attractive to children.
C. AI relationships are an alternative to human interaction.
D. AI relationships may discourage children from real connections.
15. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Are AI toys a perfect choice? B. Is AI defining children’s growth?
C. Who is responsible for childcare? D. How do AI toys change childhood?
D 13. A 14. D 15. B
根据第二段中的“acknowledges that the technology makes sci‑fi concepts plausible, offering promise as, for example, a productivity enhancer and time‑saver for parents, a monitoring and research tool to collect valuable data on child development, and an interactive instructor helping some kids learn.(承认这项技术让科幻概念变得plausible,例如有望成为父母提高效率、节省时间的工具,收集儿童发育宝贵数据的监测研究工具,以及帮助部分孩子学习的互动指导者。)”
根据第三段中的“Suskind cites the research by developmental psychologist Patricia K. Kuhl, who proposed the “social gate” hypothesis (假说)‑the idea that children’s brains are biologically wired to learn through social interaction.(萨斯坎德引用发展心理学家帕特里夏·K·库尔的研究,她提出了“社会闸门”假说——儿童的大脑在生理上天生通过社会互动进行学习。)”
根据第五段中的“Interestingly, Suskind compares AI relationships to ultra‑processed food. “If all you eat is fruit snacks, which are a synthetic (合成的) version of fruit, when you actually eat the real fruit, you will be like, ‘Hmm, it’s not quite as sweet,’” she says.(有趣的是,萨斯坎德把人工智能带来的交往类比为超加工食品。“如果你只吃水果零食,也就是水果的合成替代品,当你真正吃到真实水果时,你会觉得‘嗯,好像没有那么甜’,”她说。)”可知,把AI交往比作加工食品,暗示孩子习惯AI虚拟交往后,会削弱对真实人际往来的意愿。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是第一段中的“AI is already a part of childhood. While chatbots stand ready to answer questions like, “Are monsters real?” or “Why is the sky blue?”, companies are racing to embed AI into kids’ toys.(人工智能已经成为童年的一部分。聊天机器人随时准备回答诸如“怪物是真的吗?”或者“天空为什么是蓝色的?”这类问题,企业正争相把人工智能植入儿童玩具。)”可知,文章围绕人工智能介入儿童生活,探讨它是否正在定义孩子的成长,由此可知,“人工智能正在定义儿童的成长吗?”能够概括全文内容,适合作为文章标题。

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
In a remote valley lay Clara’s hometown, a forgotten river island reachable only by a narrow dirt road. Most young adults had flooded into the city, leaving behind grey-haired grandparents and children.
Clara, after building a successful career in the city, returned home, surprised by what she found: children glued to screens, and quiet streets empty of laughter. She invested her savings and opened a free bookstore on the riverbank. The shelves were filled with books — but the chairs were always empty.
The villagers were polite but helpless. “Once the kids pick up a phone, you can’t get them to read,” an elderly woman sighed. The words weighed on Clara’s heart but she said nothing. The next Saturday, with golden light spreading on the river, she loaded a cloth bag with picture books and set out on her bicycle, hoping to bring stories to the children.
Her first stop was a small cottage. A young boy sat on the doorstep, phone in hand. Clara asked gently if he would like to read some picture books. The boy shook his head. “Thanks, but I’m spending my time on my phone,” he replied. Then the door closed behind him. At the next two houses, there was no answer; the grandparents were out working in the fields.
By late afternoon, her bag remained stuffed with untouched books. She stood by the river, watching the sun sink, and wondered if the old woman had been right. It was then that she noticed a small figure sitting on the ground — eight-year-old Toby. His clothes were faded but his face was sincere and clean. He was drawing shapes in the dust with a stick — not random marks, but careful outlines of birds in flight, as though illustrating a story only he could see.
Clara opened her bag. The last sunlight fell across the book covers, making them stand out. One book bore a picture of a bird spreading its wings in flight.

The following Saturday, Clara walked into her bookstore, surprised to find Toby was not alone.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Clara took a deep breath and walked towards him. She crouched down, pointed at the flying bird on the book cover and asked softly, “Do you want to see more birds that can travel across mountains and seas in stories?” Toby froze, his eyes fixed on the bright cover, and nodded shyly. Clara sat beside him, turning pages and narrating the warm story vividly. The boy’s eyes grew brighter little by little, and he even shared his own wish to draw all the lovely birds in the valley. Before leaving, Clara lent the book to him and invited him to the bookstore.
The following Saturday, Clara walked into her bookstore, surprised to find Toby was not alone. He was standing by the shelf with three other kids, all holding the picture books Clara had brought before. Toby ran to her excitedly and said he told his friends the interesting bird story, and they all wanted to see more books about nature and stories. Soon, laughter and reading voices filled the bookstore. More and more kids put down their phones and came here, and the quiet riverbank was full of long-lost joy again.
