David Brooks is a best-selling author. The book club I joined recently picked his work How to Know a Person: The Art of Seeing Others Deeply and Being Deeply Seen. Brooks opens the book with a personal reflection: “By high school, I had built a long-term shelter inside my own mind.” Yet after marriage and the arrival of his children, he came to realize that inner change was badly needed. He recalls, “When I was younger, my goal was to become knowledgeable. As I grew older, I longed to gain wisdom. Wise individuals combine factual knowledge with compassionate insight into other human beings.”
Brooks argues that the quality of individual lives, as well as social well-being, depends heavily on how we treat one another during small, day-to-day exchanges. He observes two types of people in society: “diminishers” and “illuminators”. To illustrate what makes an illuminator, Brooks cites E.M. Forster’s biographer: “To speak to him was to feel heard with such intensity that you were driven toward your most sincere, sharp-sighted and finest self.”
Brooks further notes that frequent readers tend to grow more empathetic, a vital quality for healthy relationships. Reading enables audiences to witness characters’ struggles, broadening their awareness of diverse viewpoints and inner feelings. He borrows a line from Thornton Wilder: “In love’s service, only the wounded soldiers can serve.” It is through hardship and tough life events, Brooks implies, that human beings gradually achieve greater emotional wisdom.
Brooks proves himself a skilled story-teller and draws widely from research findings. Still, the reviewer finds the book occasionally disjointed. Some extended anecdotes (趣闻) fail to closely support the arguments laid out in earlier chapters. Though Brooks is well-informed, certain sections read like a journalist’s collection of quotations from diverse materials.
Even so, the reviewer appreciates Brooks’s frankness. He openly admits where his own understanding falls short, and shows genuine passion for the topic. All things considered, this volume can serve as a worthwhile reference for readers.
4. What do we know about Brooks from paragraph 1?
A. His life course is redirected.
B. The book club makes his book a hit.
C. His book focuses on personal reflection.
D. Parenthood shifts his perspective on life.
5. According to Brooks, an illuminator tends to ________.
A. prioritize others’ opinions
B. demand total honesty from others
C. empathize with people and better them
D. stay away from people and avoid conflicts
6. How can readers build their empathy through reading?
A. By sharing different opinions. B. By sensing others’ inner worlds.
C. By recording life experiences. D. By curing emotional wounds.
7. What does the author want to convey in paragraph 4?
A. The characters in the book are vividly described.
B. The language of the text is informal and original.
C. Some contents of the book are loosely connected.
D. The central theme of the book is clearly presented.
D 5. C 6. B 7. C

For many birdwatchers, recording a species outside its normal range is the top prize. In the UK, the discoveries often make national headlines. But a new scourge (灾祸) is threatening to ruin the fun: AI slop.
The rise of generative AI platforms such as ChatGPT and Google Gemini has led to a sharp increase in artificial and enhanced images of rare and celebrated birds across wildlife photography forums. Scientists are concerned that these images will damage the credibility of popular citizen-science platforms such as iNaturalist and Macaulay Library, which are routinely used in scientific research to monitor species’ habitat range.
“My experience of looking at Facebook these days is that a huge volume of wildlife photos now are simply AI-generated imagery,” said Dr. Alexander Lees, an ecologist at Manchester Metropolitan University. “The idea that we could use those photos to help us understand where species are in space and time is very difficult.” Lees points to the example of a false sighting in central Brazil of a red-winged blackbird, which is usually found in North America. It was, in fact, an epaulet oriole — a common new world species — but the photographer had asked AI to make the picture “look better”, so parts of the red-winged blackbird were added.
Citizen science organizations are working to understand the scale of the issue. On iNaturalist, just 1,400 of the platform’s 610m images have been flagged for AI use. From monitoring how plants and animals move in response to climate breakdown to recording species’ new behavior, dozens of discoveries have been made using citizen science.
Tony Iwane, an iNaturalist director, appealed to users to be cautious. “The more we know about where species are, the better informed we can be as conservationists. But the information needs to be accurate.”
8. What phenomenon is highlighted in the first two paragraphs?
A. Rise of AI-processed bird images.
B. Posting AI-edited images on AI platforms.
C. Recording a species outside its normal range.
D. Emergence of false AI-generated information.
9. Which of the following does Dr. Alexander Lees intend to tell us?
A. AI-generated wildlife photos can mislead people.
B. Some enhanced birdwatching photos go unnoticed.
C. Photographers have the duty to improve their pictures.
D. The credibility of citizen-science platforms is doubted.
10. What can be inferred from paragraph 4?
A. Citizen scientists enjoy sharing images of rare birds.
B. Most of iNaturalist images are marked as AI-related.
C. Citizen science contributes a lot to wildlife research.
D. Using AI to record species’ new behavior is difficult.
11. What is the text mainly about?
A. New ways to spot AI-generated wildlife pictures.
B. Risks AI brings to citizen science bird-recording.
C. The popularity of modern birdwatching activities.
D. Major functions of wildlife photography forums.
A 9. A 10. C 11. B

根据第三段中的““My experience of looking at Facebook these days is that a huge volume of wildlife photos now are simply AI-generated imagery,” said Dr. Alexander Lees, an ecologist at Manchester Metropolitan University. “The idea that we could use those photos to help us understand where species are in space and time is very difficult.” Lees points to the example of a false sighting in central Brazil of a red-winged blackbird, which is usually found in North America. It was, in fact, an epaulet oriole — a common new world species — but the photographer had asked AI to make the picture “look better”, so parts of the red-winged blackbird were added.(“我最近浏览脸书时发现,现在大量野生动物照片纯粹是AI生成的图像,”曼彻斯特城市大学的生态学家亚历山大·李斯博士说道。
根据第四段中的“From monitoring how plants and animals move in response to climate breakdown to recording species’ new behavior, dozens of discoveries have been made using citizen science.(从监测动植物应对气候恶化的迁徙变化,到记录物种新行为,公民科学已经促成数十项研究发现。)”

以及第二段“Scientists are concerned that these images will damage the credibility of popular citizen-science platforms such as iNaturalist and Macaulay Library, which are routinely used in scientific research to monitor species’ habitat range.
D
When scanning ingredient labels on supermarket goods, shoppers frequently spot chemical names like citric acid. These substances are food preservatives added to block food spoilage and maintain taste and color. More than one fifth of all packaged food items carry at least one such additive. For years, people viewed these chemicals as totally safe, yet a new large-scale research casts doubt on this common belief.
A research team from several French universities carried out a long-term health survey, covering over 112 thousand volunteers. The team tracked each participant’s diet and physical conditions for nearly eight years. Earlier lab experiments hinted certain preservatives might damage heart functions but few studies collected reliable evidence from human groups. This project stands out as the first wide-ranging research exploring the connection between daily intake of various preservatives and two major illnesses — high blood pressure and heart diseases.
Researchers sorted preservatives into two functional groups. The first type restricts the growth of mold and bacteria while the second prevents food oxidation (氧化) and discoloration. Statistics showed almost every volunteer took in preservatives regularly. Those consuming large amounts of bacteria-inhibiting preservatives (抑菌防腐剂) faced a 29 percent higher risk of high blood pressure and a 16 percent rise in heart disease risk. Heavy users of anti-oxidation preservatives also saw a 22 percent increased chance of suffering high blood pressure. Eight widely used preservatives were linked to blood pressure risks and one of them further lifted heart trouble possibility.
Though the data shows clear correlation, the team reminds readers the study cannot confirm direct cause and effect. Some obvious limits exist in the research sample where most participants are highly educated women, which fails to mirror the whole population. Even after adjusting data to rule out outside influences, the negative connection remained stable.
The research team calls for official authorities worldwide to re-examine the safety standards of food additives. Current rules may not fully protect consumers given people absorb different preservatives from multiple meals daily. Experts also suggest ordinary citizens choose less processed natural food to cut unnecessary chemical intake.
12. What is special about the research?
A. It uses large-scale human data.
B. It identifies new preservatives.
C. It updates lab experiment methods.
D. It improves food processing techniques.
13. What does the underlined word “correlation” in paragraph 4 refer to?
A. High risks of two major illnesses.
B. Link between preservatives and health.
C. Differences between two functional groups.
D. Hidden connections of relevant health issues.
14. Which best describes the research sample?
A. Authoritative. B. Typical.
C. Restricted. D. Random.
15. What is the best title for the text?
A. Safety Rules for Food Production
B. Ways to Reduce Intake of Additives
C. Classification of Common Food Preservatives
D. New Findings on Preservatives and Related Risks
A 13. B 14. C 15. D
根据第二段中的“Earlier lab experiments hinted certain preservatives might damage heart functions but few studies collected reliable evidence from human groups. This project stands out as the first wide‑ranging research exploring the connection between daily intake of various preservatives and two major illnesses — high blood pressure and heart diseases.(早期的实验室实验暗示某些防腐剂可能损害心脏功能,但几乎没有研究收集来自人类群体的可靠证据。该项目是首个大规模研究,探究各类防腐剂的日常摄入与两种主要疾病——高血压和心脏病之间的关联。)”可知,这项研究的特别之处在于它使用了大规模的人类相关数据。
【13题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第四段中的“Though the data shows clear correlation, the team reminds readers the study cannot confirm direct cause and effect. Some obvious limits exist in the research sample where most participants are highly educated women, which fails to mirror the whole population. (尽管数据显示出明显的correlation,但研究团队提醒读者该研究无法证实直接的因果关系。该研究样本存在一些明显局限,大多数参与者为受过高等教育的女性,无法反映全体人群的情况。)”可知,前文研究统计了防腐剂摄入量与患病风险之间的数据变化,因此,画线单词“correlation”指代防腐剂与健康之间的联系符合语境。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段中的“Some obvious limits exist in the research sample where most participants are highly educated women, which fails to mirror the whole population.(该研究样本存在一些明显局限,大多数参与者为受过高等教育的女性,无法反映全体人群的情况。)”
通读全文,尤其是第一段中的“For years, people viewed these chemicals as totally safe, yet a new large‑scale research casts doubt on this common belief.(多年来人们认为这些化学物质完全安全,然而一项新的大规模研究对这一共识提出质疑。)”
In a world that celebrates busyness, unstructured free time is often seen as wasted time. People fill every minute with to-do lists, scheduled activities, and productivity goals. ____16____ Yet, unstructured time — when you have no plans, deadlines, or specific tasks to complete — holds surprising benefits for both mind and body.
Unstructured free time allows your brain to rest and recharge. When you’re constantly switching between tasks, your prefrontal cortex (前额叶皮质) works overtime, leading to mental exhaustion. ____17____ Without external demands, your mind can wander freely, making room for creative thinking and problem-solving.
____18____ It is during these unplanned moments that many people discover new hobbies or revisit forgotten passions. A casual walk in the park might spark an interest in birdwatching. A quiet afternoon with no obligations could lead to picking up an old guitar again. These small discoveries can bring unexpected joy and a renewed sense of purpose.
Too much structure can leave little room for self-reflection. ____19____ Unstructured time gives you the space to ask yourself simple but important questions: Am I happy with my routine? What do I truly enjoy doing? This quiet self-check-in can help you stay connected to your own needs and values.
Of course, unstructured free time doesn’t mean being lazy. ____20____ The key is to balance it with the responsibilities of daily life. In the end, these unplanned moments are not empty — they are the spaces where life’s most meaningful experiences often grow.
A. Some people prefer to spend their free time with friends or family.
B. Unstructured time can also be a powerful tool for personal growth.
C. Many people even feel guilty when they are not being “productive.”
D. This kind of mental break is essential for restoring focus and clarity.
E. It simply means letting go of the pressure to always be doing something.
F. Creative ideas rarely appear when you are overloaded with tight schedules.
G. Constantly following plans leaves no time to process your thoughts and feelings.
C 17. D 18. B 19. G 20. E
根据空格前的句子“People fill every minute with to-do lists, scheduled activities, and productivity goals.(人们把每一分钟都填满待办清单、计划好的活动和生产力目标。)” 结合空格后的句子“Yet, unstructured time — when you have no plans, deadlines, or specific tasks to complete — holds surprising benefits for both mind and body.(然而,无结构时间——即你没有任何计划、截止日期或具体任务要完成的时间——对身心都有着令人惊讶的好处。)” C项“Many people even feel guilty when they are not being ‘productive.’(很多人在没有‘高效产出’时甚至会感到内疚。)”
根据空格前的句子“When you’re constantly switching between tasks, your prefrontal cortex works overtime, leading to mental exhaustion.(当你不断在任务之间切换时,你的前额叶皮质会超负荷运转,导致精神疲惫。)” 结合空格后的句子“Without external demands, your mind can wander freely, making room for creative thinking and problem-solving.(没有外部要求时,你的思维可以自由漫游,为创造性思维和问题解决腾出空间。)” D项“This kind of mental break is essential for restoring focus and clarity.(这种精神上的休息对于恢复专注力和清晰度至关重要。)”中的“This kind of mental break”指第一句提到的rest,“restoring focus and clarity”与后文“making room for creative thinking and problem-solving”逻辑连贯。
根据空格后的句子“It is during these unplanned moments that many people discover new hobbies or revisit forgotten passions.(正是在这些无计划的时刻,许多人发现了新的爱好或重拾了被遗忘的热情。)”以及后文“A casual walk in the park might spark an interest in birdwatching. A quiet afternoon with no obligations could lead to picking up an old guitar again.(一次公园里的随意散步可能会激发对观鸟的兴趣。一个没有义务的安静下午可能会让你重新拿起旧吉他。)”可知,该段讨论的核心是无结构时间如何帮助人们发现新事物、实现个人成长。空格处作为段首句,应概括本段主旨。B项“Unstructured time can also be a powerful tool for personal growth.(无结构时间也可以成为个人成长的有力工具。) ”中的“personal growth”精准概括了后文“discover new hobbies”“revisit forgotten passions”等内容,且also表明这是在上一段“大脑休息”之外的另一个好处。
【19题详解】
根据空格前的句子“Too much structure can leave little room for self-reflection.(过多结构化的安排,几乎不给自我反思留下空间。)” 结合空格后的句子“Unstructured time gives you the space to ask yourself simple but important questions: Am I happy with my routine? What do I truly enjoy doing?(无结构时间给了你空间去问自己一些简单但重要的问题:我对自己的日常安排满意吗?我真正喜欢做什么?)”可知,空格处应进一步解释为什么过多结构化安排会阻碍自我反思。G项“Constantly following plans leaves no time to process your thoughts and feelings.(不断遵循计划让人没有时间处理自己的想法和感受。)”中的“Constantly following plans”呼应了前文的“Too much structure”,且“leaves no time to process your thoughts and feelings”解释了为何缺乏自我反思的空间,与后文无结构时间“gives you the space”形成对比。
根据空格前的句子“Of course, unstructured free time doesn’t mean being lazy.(当然,无结构自由时间并不意味着懒惰。)” 结合空格后的句子“The key is to balance it with the responsibilities of daily life.(关键在于将其与日常生活的责任相平衡。)” E项“It simply means letting go of the pressure to always be doing something.(它仅仅意味着放下总是需要做些什么的压力。)”中的It指代“unstructured free time”,且“simply means”与前文的“doesn’t mean being lazy”构成“不是什么……

空格处是谓语动词,主语A special industrial art fair与schedule之间是被动关系,be scheduled to do sth.

It was a sunny late March morning in Alabama. Bennett decided to go kayaking (皮划艇) and fishing on the Elk River before heading home to watch his 4-year-old daughter’s ball game. The weather was pleasant after a week of rain and overflowing rivers. Confident and relaxed, Bennett loaded his kayak with fishing equipment.
The river surface looked calm, but hidden currents ran beneath. Shortly after he pushed off, chaotic water suddenly flipped (打翻) his small kayak. Submerged in the icy, rushing water, Bennett was instantly terrified. His ill-fitting life jacket choked his throat, making it hard to breathe. Struggling desperately, he failed to right the kayak and was gradually carried downstream by the violent current.
Then Bennett remembered: My phone! But when he reached into his pocket, he found that the phone was gone. As he checked his other pocket, his hand brushed against the handgun he always wore when he fished, in case of snakes. Maybe he could signal for help. He fired repeated shots at passing cars on the bridge. Unfortunately, no one stopped. Shivering violently and losing basic body control, Bennett thought he would not survive the cold river.
Just as he was about to give up, John who was camping nearby with his children heard the unusual gunshots. As a disaster-recovery volunteer, John had pulled people out of floods, set bones and rescued puppies. He saw his skills and experiences as a responsibility to help others. With professional rescue experience, he immediately realized someone was in great danger.

Without hesitation, John rushed toward the riverbank. Spotting Bennett struggling in the roaring current, John threw off his camping coat, his children watching anxiously from the bank. It was his rich rescue experience that made him stay calm despite the threatening situation. With the cold water biting his skin, he dived into the river, where rapid waves kept sweeping Bennett away. So strong was the current that John had enormous difficulty getting close to the drowning man. Grasping Bennett’s arm tightly, he fought against the rushing water, every muscle burning with great tiredness.
After what felt like ages, he finally pulled Bennett onto dry land. Shaken and exhausted, Bennett lay on the ground, his body trembling non-stop. What John did was perform first aid, which helped Bennett regain his breath. It was not long before Bennett calmed down, realizing how lucky he was to survive. With gratitude filling his heart, Bennett thanked John repeatedly. Had John not heard the gunshots and come to his rescue, Bennett would have lost his life, missing his daughter’s ball game forever.
