W: What are you reading?
M: It’s a new children’s book called Sail Away by Langston Hughes.

M: Yes. The book is a collection of his poems about the ocean. The artist Ashley Bryan created a series of paper-cut pictures to go with the poems, and he’s ninety-two years old!
W: Wow! How old is Langston Hughes?
M: He’s not alive anymore. He died in 1967 when he was only sixty-five. Ashley Bryan has done a lot of performances of Langston Hughes’s poems, and he wanted to provide artwork for a book of them. M: This is very common. A lot of kids would rather go hungry than eat the broccoli and chicken on their plate.
W: So what should I do, Dr. Brain?
M: One thing parents don’t have to concern too much is protein. It’s rare that kids don’t get enough protein every day. They don’t need that much. Their bodies are so little.
W: That would be great.
M: Iron is an essential nutrient. Growing children need even more iron than adults. Cereal is a good source of iron. It is often appealing to picky eaters.
W: Okay, I got that. What else?
M: Eating fruit can be challenging for picky eaters. Freeze-dried fruit offers a possible solution. It provides the same amount of nutrients as fresh fruit.
W: That’s not a problem for Caroline. She likes to eat fruit. By the way, can you recommend a brand of cereal?

W: I’ve always loved being outdoors. And I want to show people how wonderful nature is.
M: Do you have a favorite photo you’ve taken? I saw one of your photos taken in Kenya. It looked amazing!
W: I do like that one. However, nothing could compare to the photo of a mother bear with her children I took in Alaska. Although it took me three hours, it was worth it. I’d love to get a picture of a special kind of bird in Scotland, but they’re so hard to find.

根据第二段“Grandpa left, soon returning as though carrying something in his hand, but Mario could see nothing there.”
根据第二段“if you take it to school and you manage to sit on it, you’ll be able to tell who your true friends are.”
根据倒数第二段“Mario saw George, Lucas, and Diana — three of his best friends — holding him up, so he wouldn’t fall.”
根据最后一段“those who take joy in our misfortunes when we are in difficulty are not our true friends”,并结合前文三个朋友扶住Mario、其他人嘲笑他的情节可知,故事告诉我们真正的朋友是在我们困境中关心、帮助我们的人;A项“不要嘲笑朋友”偏离主旨,B项“真正的朋友能帮我们变魔术”与原文不符,D项“有太多好朋友不是好事”文中未提及,均排除,故选C项。
根据第二段“Helen became the most important critic of the age by dealing with something old and basic — the fact that great poetry was, well, lovable”可知,海伦成为知名评论家的原因是她专注于诗歌中古老且核心的本质——伟大的诗歌是可爱的。
根据第三段“But unlike Wilson, Helen was never forced to show off”可知,海伦与威尔逊的不同之处在于她从不刻意炫耀,即不太在意获取声誉。
根据第四段“she told me it caught her completely off guard”可知,海伦得知获奖时完全没料到,即感到惊讶。故选A项。

故选A项。

选项D中的“A couple ... also lent a hand”点明帮助者不止两人,“also”承接前文,后文“One ... The other ...”

To her horror, the basket was empty. Jane’s heart sank as she frantically searched the yard, her voice trembling with fear as she called Pip’s name. Tears welled up in her eyes as she imagined the worst, fearing that Pip might have been blown away by the storm or hurt by the falling branches. She knelt down, scanning the ground for any sign of the little sparrow, her hands shaking as she picked up twigs and leaves.
At this moment, Mr. Thompson appeared with Pip. He held the sparrow gently in his hands, his expression a mix of concern and embarrassment. “I found him hiding under my porch,” he said, his voice softer than usual. “The storm was too strong for him.” Jane rushed over, tears of relief streaming down her face as she took Pip back. She looked up at Mr. Thompson, her eyes shining with gratitude. “Thank you.” she whispered, her heart overflowing with joy and newfound respect for her neighbor.

There was once a boy called Mario who loved to have lots of friends at school. However, he wasn’t sure whether or not his classmates were his true friends, so he asked his grandpa. The old man answered, “I have just exactly what you need; it’s in the attic (阁楼). Wait here for a minute.”
Grandpa left, soon returning as though carrying something in his hand, but Mario could see nothing there. “Take it. It’s a very special chair. Because it’s invisible (无形的) it’s rather difficult to sit on, but if you take it to school and you manage to sit on it, you’ll be able to tell who your true friends are.”
Mario took the strange invisible chair and went to school. At break time he asked everyone to form a circle, and he put himself in the middle, with his chair. “Nobody move. You’re about to see something amazing,” Mario said.
Then Mario tried sitting on the chair. He missed and fell straight onto his backside. Everyone had a pretty good laugh. Mario wouldn’t be beaten. He kept trying to sit on the magic chair, and kept falling to the ground... until, suddenly, he tried again and didn’t fall. This time he sat, hovering (悬停) in mid-air.
Looking around, Mario saw George, Lucas, and Diana — three of his best friends — holding him up, so he wouldn’t fall. At the same time, many others he had thought of as friends were doing nothing but make fun of him, enjoying each and every fall.

Six years ago, I became friends with Helen Vendler, a famous poetry critic who died this year, after she came to a talk I gave at Harvard about my 1965-66 Fulbright year in Ireland. Our friendship was close at the outset and was deepened by many letters between us.
Some critics gain notice by something new they discover in the literature they examine. Helen became the most important critic of the age by dealing with something old and basic — the fact that great poetry was, well, lovable. Her vast knowledge of it was not like anyone else’s, and she embraced (接受) the poets she admired with enthusiasm.
I never asked Helen why she had come to my talk in the first place, though I had recognized her immediately. After spending a life with English and American poetry — especially the poetry of Wallace Stevens — how could I not? The tilt (倾斜) of her head, the lines around the mouth that always seemed on the edge of saying something meaningful and the sad-kind-wise eyes of the most significant literary figure since Edmund Wilson. But unlike Wilson, Helen was never forced to show off. She knew as much about American writing as Wilson, and I believe, loved it more.
When recently the American Academy of Arts and Letters awarded Helen the Gold Medal for Belles Lettres and Criticism, she told me it caught her completely off guard, and joked perhaps the committee had made their decision based on her advanced age — and if so, she saw no reason to object.
Shelley called poets the “unacknowledged legislators (立法者) of the world.” I never fully got that famous line. But if the legislators’ laws apply to feeling and conduct, I think he was onto something. If one reads poetry as deeply as Helen did, and stays with it, and lets it roll around in one’s head, the effect is transporting. You find yourself better understanding feelings and language.
What made Helen famous as a critic?
A. She pushed the study of poetry a big step forward. B. She built harmonious relationships with many poets.
C. She had a remarkable ability to discover new poetry. D. She focused on something old and essential about poetry.
In what way did Helen differ from Wilson?
A. She was less engaged in English poetry. B. She cared little about gaining reputation.
C. She knew more about American writing. D. She was better at using different facial expressions.
How did Helen feel when informed of the award?
A. Surprised. B. Nervous. C. Excited. D. Grateful.
Why does the author mention Shelley’s line in the last paragraph?
A. To offer Helen’s interpretation of the poem. B. To demonstrate Shelley’s influence on Helen.
C. To recognize Helen’s approach to reading poetry. D. To highlight the similarity between Shelley and Helen.

We often find it hard to tear our eyes away from screens — an urge so intense that it messes with our focus and our cognitive (认知的) health, which is known as “brain rot”. The Oxford Dictionary defines it as the degradation of mental state due to overconsumption of online content. It refers to the dull stuff on social media and its negative impact on brain health.
“There’s an arms race to develop digital content and platforms that can grab people’s attention and compete in a digital market,” says Adam Leventhal, a professor at the University of Southern California. “Digital content and platforms that win the arms race are increasingly addictive.” Dr. Leventhal adds, “They pull people into ‘digital addiction’ and expose consumers to unhealthy content.”
Though not an official diagnosis (诊断), “brain rot” can cause cognitive and emotional problems. “Too much screen time can negatively affect attention, concentration, learning, memory, emotional regulation, and social functioning,” Dr. Manwell says. “Brain rot” occurs as screen time replaces activities beneficial to the brain, such as exercise and socializing. Passive, rapid scrolling while multitasking or trying to work or study at the same time also contributes, resulting in divided and reduced attentional resources and leading to poorer learning and memory capabilities. Manwell says, “There are often also corresponding effects on the brain such as reduced gray matter and white matter, leading to damaged processing capacity and efficiency.”
To fight against “brain rot”, changes can be made. Manwell suggests altering digital media habits, like taking screen breaks and limiting certain apps. There are apps to track screen time and enforce digital detox. For long-term improvement, Manwell recommends replacing screen time with activities like meditation, exercise, and learning new skills. If screen use is work-related, find alternatives like printing materials or having in-person meetings. When on a screen, focus merely on the task to decline multitasking’s negative effects. Overall, being aware and making lifestyle adjustments can help prevent and reverse (逆转) the impact of “brain rot”.
According to the text, what do we know about “brain rot”?
A. A kind of serious disease officially diagnosed by doctors. B. The loss of cognitive abilities caused by using digital platforms.
C. The negative impact of overusing digital devices on physical health. D. The decline of mental well-being due to overconsuming online materials.
What can we infer from Adam Leventhal’s words?
A. The competition among digital contents and platforms is fierce. B. Digital platforms are developed to help people improve their mental health.
C. The digital content that wins the attention competition is usually less addictive. D. The development of digital content and platforms leads to some negative effects.
What does the underlined phrase “digital detox” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Using digital devices frequently. B. Taking a break from digital devices.
C. Giving up using digital technologies. D. Replacing with advanced digital products.
What is the main theme of the text?
A. The harms and solutions of “brain rot”. B. The effect of addictive digital platforms.
C. The importance of socializing in daily life. D. The impact of “brain rot” on digital device.

Once a year, Bannister climbs to High Rock Lookout where she scattered her mother’s ashes 23 years ago. 1 Last August, Bannister, then 79, went on her own, figuring she’d be fine because she’s an experienced hiker.
She arrived at the trail early and made her way to the lookout. As she headed back down, her foot got caught in a hole in the ground. 2 When sitting up, she knew immediately she had broken her leg. She cried out for help, and before long, a stranger approached and called 911. They were told a search and rescue team would arrive in five hours.
“It wasn’t very encouraging,” Bannister says. “I asked if anyone had painkillers, because the pain was pretty substantial then.” 3 But two young men, Troy May, an Air Force airman and his friend Layton Allen, came over to see what was going on. When seeing Bannister in extreme pain, they offered to carry her to the bottom of the trail.
May eased Bannister onto his back and started hiking downward. He carried her for most of the nearly three-hour journey, and Allen carried her for the rest. “That was just one kindness,” says Bannister. 4 One, a physical therapist, bandaged Bannister’s foot and built a makeshift splint (夹板) for her leg. The other did breathing exercises with her to help calm her. During the long hike down, her rescuers shared stories to distract her from the mounting pain. Jane had a deep affection for birds. Every morning, she scattered (抛撒) seeds in her backyard and whispered, “Good morning, my little friends!” To her, their songs sounded like cheerful laughter, and she often laughed along with them.
However, her neighbor, Mr. Thompson, didn’t share her joy. He was constantly annoyed by the birds that flew into his yard. “They’re too noisy!” he complained. “And they make such a mess in MY yard!” His sharp words made Jane feel quite uneasy, yet she refused to give up on her feathered friends. She firmly believed that every small creature deserved care.
One morning, Jane discovered a small sparrow (麻雀) shaking under the fence. One of its wings looked bent at a painful angle. Filled with worry, Jane carefully picked it up and named it Pip. She placed him in a small, warm basket in a safe corner right next to the fence.
A week passed. Pip was getting better but still unable to fly. One afternoon, while Jane was feeding Pip by the fence, Mr. Thompson shouted from his side, “You’re just asking for trouble!” Jane gently lifted Pip in her hands so Mr. Thompson could see him through the gaps in the fence. “Look, Mr. Thompson. Pip’s wing is hurt.” Mr. Thompson cast an impatient glance at the tiny creature. For a moment, his frown (皱眉) softened. “That wing...” he said softly, almost to himself.
Just then, Jane’s mother called her from the driveway, saying they were leaving for a family visit. Jane waved a quick goodbye to Pip and hurried to the car. However, on their way home, a heavy storm broke out. Watching the trees shaking in the strong wind, Jane felt very worried about Pip, who was left all alone in the yard. The moment they pulled into the driveway, she dashed toward the backyard, calling Pip’s name.
