The great elephant stands in the hot African sun. Slowly the beast lifts its head and its thick trunk delicately curls around the leaves of a nearby tree, pulling out the leaves and politely slipping them into its mouth.
The beast’s great grey skin is partly broken and aged from the African sun. Some mud drops on one side from its last trip to a nearby river. Its rough hair sticks out from all over its skin and two large, white tusks curve elegantly from either side of its mouth.
Somewhere a lion roars and something else gives a loud high shout. A vulture (秃鹫) drifts over far above this world, barely a black dot in the sky. The buzzing of the countless bush insects seems to collectively shift up in high tune, almost like the whole of the savanna (热带草原) was singing some song that only they knew.
I peer through the lens (镜头) at this scene. The zoom lens shows almost every detail of the elephant: the three small cuts in its left ear from playing as a baby around thorn trees, the scar down its front leg where a lion caught it unaware as a young adult, and weathering on its great, valuable tusks from decades of living in this unforgiving grassland on a dusty continent.
And then the elephant looks at me.
It looks at me with those big, eyelashed eyes with a warmth coming outwards from a vast, hidden depth there. I can suddenly feel its soul, and feel the line of elephants that came before this one, trailing back to the very beginnings of this great savanna. We will never understand what wonders this ancient being and its kind have seen and whispered to each other across the ages on this old, sacred grassland.
It looks at me, and it looks through me and sees me.
The elephant knows I am there. It always did. It is not running away, nor is it fighting. It accepts and forgives. It loves. But, mostly, it just feels sad. It feels sorry for me. I cannot do this anymore.
I take my eye off the sights and hand the gun back to my partner. “Let’s go home,” I said in a quiet voice, “let’s just go home.”
4. According to the first two paragraphs, which word can best describe the elephant?
A. Mysterious. B. Depressed. C. Aggressive. D. Graceful.
5. When the author sees through the lens, he is .
A. deeply moved and filled with sympathy B. overwhelmed by the elephant’s strength
C. annoyed at the presence of other animals D. shocked and scared by the elephant’s scars
6. What does the author intend to do initially?
A. Take a picture. B. Observe the elephant.
C. Hunt the elephant. D. Study African grassland.
7. What can we learn from the passage?
A. Nature calms our anger. B. Nature purifies our souls.
C. Nature heals our wounds. D. Nature enriches our imagination.
C
Next time you find yourself feeling sleepy from the pitter-patter of rain outside your window, think how that same rain might sound if you were a tiny seed planted below a free-falling droplet. Would you still be sleepy? In fact, MIT engineers have found the opposite to be the case: Some seeds may come alive to the sound of rain.
Nicholas Makris, a professor of mechanical engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and his team conducted experiments with rice seeds, which naturally grow in shallow water. They submerged (浸没) roughly 8,000 rice seeds in shallow water basins at a depth of about 2.5 to 3.0 centimeters and exposed them to the sound of falling water droplets impacting the surface above. The seeds were placed away from the impact zone so that only the sound would reach them. The team varied the droplet size and height to mimic different rains.
The results were striking. Seeds exposed to the sound of water were able to germinate (发芽) 24 to 37 percent faster than those in identical but quiet conditions. In addition, seeds located closer to the drop impact point sensed the sound better and grew faster.
So how do seeds “hear” raindrops? The researchers explain that when a raindrop hits the surface of a puddle or the ground, it generates a sound wave that makes the surroundings vibrate (振动), including any shallowly submerged seeds. These vibrations are intense enough to dislodge (使移位) a seed’s “statoliths” — tiny gravity-sensing organelles within certain cells of a seed. Their repeated displacement is a signal for seeds and seedlings to grow and sprout.
Scientists believe that this mechanism offers an advantage: If seeds are close enough to the surface to respond to the sound of rain, they are likely at the perfect depth to take in water and safely grow to the surface. “What this study is saying is that seeds can sense sound in ways that can help them survive,” says Makris. “The energy of the rain sound is enough to accelerate a seed’s growth.”
8. What is the main purpose of paragraph 2?
A. To explain the selection of subjects. B. To highlight a specific research tool.
C. To present the experimental method. D. To provide the study’s scientific basis.
9. How do raindrop sounds make seeds grow?
A. By generating a special kind of signal.
B. By shaking some of their internal structures.
C. By replacing their gravity-sensing organelles.
D. By directly transforming vibrations into energy.
10. What advantage do rain-sensing seeds likely have?
A. Fast root growth. B. Ideal growth position.
C. Efficient water storage. D. Excellent hearing ability.
11. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. Secret Senses: How Plants Feel the World
B. Statoliths: The “Brain” Inside a Rice Seed
C. Beyond Sound: How Water Affects Seed Growth
D. A Wake-Up Call: Rain Sounds Drive Seed Growth

Getting into arguments, whether with family or strangers online, can feel like debating with a wall. We are probably all guilty of thinking we’re right, even if we don’t have all the facts. This phenomenon called the “illusion of information adequacy” is detailed in a recent psychology study.
“Interpersonal conflict is on the rise, driving increases in anger, anxiety and stress,” said Angus Fletcher, a neurophysiologist at the Ohio State University. “We wanted to look into those misunderstandings and see if they could be reduced.”
Fletcher’s team surveyed 1,261 Americans online. Participants were divided into groups and given articles about a fictional factory. One group read only reasons for the factory to merge (合并) with another factory, another only reasons for staying separate, and a Control group read all the arguments. They found that the majority of the groups who only read the pro- or anti-merging arguments believed they had enough information to make a good decision, and would follow the article’s recommendation, while about 55 and 45 percent of the control group recommended the factories merge or separate. The participants with the one-sided information also assumed that others would make the same decision they did.
The team calls this belief the illusion of information adequacy, as Fletcher describes it, “The less our brain knows, the more confident it is that it knows all it needs.” These findings add to research on naive realism, the belief that one’s subjective understanding is objective truth. While naive realism studies focus on different understandings of the same situation, Fletcher’s research shows people may share the same understanding, if given sufficient information. When the participants from the one-sided groups were asked to read all the arguments, some would change their minds. The mix of opinions was comparable to the control group.
“One of the best ways to fight the illusion of information adequacy when disagreeing with someone is to stop and ask, ‘Is there something I’m omitting that would help me see their points better?’ This can help avoid unnecessary interpersonal conflict, allowing us to focus on working through key differences between ourselves and others,” said Fletcher.
12. What is paragraph 2 mainly about?
A. The academic background of Angus Fletcher. B. The importance of reducing misunderstandings.
C. The background and purpose of Fletcher’s study. D. The way to deal with frequent misunderstandings.
13. What were all three groups asked to do during the study?
A. Defend their own views. B. Read the assigned arguments.
C. Recommend the best article. D. Discuss before making decisions.
14. What does Fletcher’s research find?
A. People from the control group are better decision-makers.
B. People with the same information make similar decisions.
C. People less informed are more likely to change their minds.
D. People with partial information overestimate their judgments.
15. What does the underlined word “omitting” in the last paragraph probably mean?
A. Leaving out. B. Making up. C. Giving up. D. Taking in.

As an experienced teacher, I’ve come to understand the great value of hands-on activities. _____16_____No other creature on Earth, not even our closest primate (灵长类) relatives, has hands structured quite like ours, capable of such precise grasping and control.
_____17_____A lot of modern life involves simple movements, such as touching screens and pushing buttons, and some experts believe our shift away from more complex hand activities could have consequences for how we think and feel.
Think about it: you're glued to your screen, typing out assignments or chatting with friends. Sure, that's a big part of how we live now. _____18_____ Our brains are actually wired to respond to hand movements. When you do things like cooking or knitting, it gives you a huge sense of achievement.
Research backs this up. Studies have shown that when people — and even rats — do things that require effort, they handle stress better, solve problems faster, and even remember things better. For example, rats that had to dig for their food were less stressed and better at solving problems than those that got food handed to them. _____19_____Activities like gardening and crafting can help reduce anxiety and depression, making you feel a whole lot better.
In my classroom, I make sure my students get a mix of traditional and digital activities. I encourage them to do things using their hands. This makes learning more fun and helps them feel emotionally and mental better._____20_____And your brain and hands will thank you!
A. The same goes for us humans.
B. The human hand is a wonder of nature.
C. Now, why don't you join me in an exciting card game?
D. Technology is constantly bringing new challenges to our hands.
E. However, we are doing less complicated hands-on work than we used to.
F. But nothing beats the satisfaction you get from doing something with your hands.
G. So next time you reach for a screen, consider picking up a pen, some clay or fabric.

Every Thursday afternoon, our school library opened an hour earlier for students who wanted a quiet place to study. It was peaceful there, filled with the smell of old books and sunlight falling through tall windows.
Mrs. Harper, the librarian, knew me well. She was a small woman with silver hair and gentle eyes. Every Thursday, she placed a cup of warm lemon tea on the corner of her desk. “For long study hours,” she would say with a smile. I never forgot the kindness.
One rainy afternoon, I arrived earlier than usual and noticed Mrs. Harper struggling to push a heavy cart (手推车) of returned books across the carpet. I hurried over to help. As we worked together, I noticed that she stopped several times to press a hand against her side. She looked pale. “Are you okay?” I asked. “Just tired,” she answered softly. “Getting older is inconvenient sometimes.”
After that day, I began helping her every Thursday. She always thanked me with the same warm smile and a cup of lemon tea.
One Thursday near the end of the term, I entered the library and found it unusually dark and quiet. The front desk was empty. No tea. No Mrs. Harper. Then I spotted the book cart standing alone near the history shelves. On top of it lay her glasses and a small notebook.
I picked up the notebook carefully. Inside was a handwritten list titled “Things to Finish Before Summer.” Most items had already been crossed out. Only one line remained: “Repair the Reading Corner before students return.” I looked toward the old reading corner by the windows. One chair had a broken leg, the paint on the shelf was chipping, and several cushions (垫子) were torn open. Mrs. Harper had always wanted students to enjoy that little space.
Just then, the principal walked into the library. “She was taken to hospital this morning,” he said quietly. I looked again at the unfinished list in my hands. Outside, rain tapped softly against the windows, making the whole library feel lonelier than before.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;

B
D 5. A 6. C 7. B

根据文章大意,尤其第六段中“I can suddenly feel its soul, and feel the line of elephants that came before this one, trailing back to the very beginnings of this great savanna. We will never understand what wonders this ancient being and its kind have seen and whispered to each other across the ages on this old, sacred grassland.( 我能突然感受到它的灵魂,感受到在这头大象之前的大象群,一直追溯到这片大草原的起源。我们永远无法理解,在这片古老而神圣的草原上,这只古老的生物和它的同类在多少世纪以来看到了什么奇迹,并彼此低语着什么)”和最后一段“I take my eye off the sights and hand the gun back to my partner. “Let’s go home,” I said in a quiet voice, “let’s just go home.”(我把视线从瞄准具上移开,把枪还给了我的搭档。“我们回家吧,”我轻声说,“我们就回家吧。”)”可推知,我们能从文章中领悟到自然可以净化我们的灵魂。故选B项。
C 9. B 10. B 11. D
根据第二段“Nicholas Makris, a professor of mechanical engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and his team conducted experiments with rice seeds, which naturally grow in shallow water. They submerged roughly 8,000 rice seeds in shallow water basins at a depth of about 2.5 to 3.0 centimeters and exposed them to the sound of falling water droplets impacting the surface above. The seeds were placed away from the impact zone so that only the sound would reach them. The team varied the droplet size and height to mimic different rains.
根据第四段“These vibrations are intense enough to dislodge a seed’s ‘statoliths’ — tiny gravity-sensing organelles within certain cells of a seed. (这些振动强度足以使种子的“平衡石”移位——平衡石是种子某些细胞内的微小重力感应细胞器。)”可知,雨滴声音产生的振动会使种子内部的平衡石发生移位,从而触发种子生长。因此,雨滴声音是通过震动种子内部的一些结构来促进种子生长的。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段“If seeds are close enough to the surface to respond to the sound of rain, they are likely at the perfect depth to take in water and safely grow to the surface. (如果种子距离地表足够近,能够对雨声做出反应,那么它们很可能处于能够吸收水分并安全生长到地表的完美深度。)”可知,能够对雨声做出反应的种子很可能处于理想的生长位置(既能吸收水分,又能安全生长到地表)。
【11题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段“Some seeds may come alive to the sound of rain. (一些种子可能会因雨声而苏醒。)”以及最后一段“‘What this study is saying is that seeds can sense sound in ways that can help them survive,’ says Makris. ‘The energy of the rain sound is enough to accelerate a seed’s growth.’ (‘这项研究表明,种子能够以有助于它们生存的方式感知声音,’马克里斯说,‘雨声的能量足以加速种子的生长。’)”可知,全文围绕“雨声能够唤醒并驱动种子加速生长”这一核心发现展开,D项A Wake-Up Call: Rain Sounds Drive Seed Growth
D
B. Making up. C. Giving up. D. Taking in.
C 13. B 14. D 15. A
根据文章第二段“Interpersonal conflict is on the rise, driving increases in anger, anxiety and stress(人际冲突正在增加,导致愤怒、焦虑和压力的增加)”和“We wanted to look into those misunderstandings and see if they could be reduced.(我们想研究这些误解,看看它们是否可以被减少。)”
根据文章第三段“Participants were divided into groups and given articles about a fictional factory. One group read only reasons for the factory to merge with another factory, another only reasons for staying separate, and a Control group read all the arguments.(参与者被分成小组,并被给予关于一家虚构工厂的文章。一组只阅读了工厂合并的理由,另一组只阅读了保持独立的理由,而对照组阅读了所有的论点。)”可知,三个小组的任务都是阅读分配给他们的相关论据内容。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第三段“They found that the majority of the groups who only read the pro- or anti-merging arguments believed they had enough information to make a good decision(他们发现,只阅读了支持或反对合并论点的大多数参与者认为他们有足够的信息来做出一个好的决定)”和第四段“The less our brain knows, the more confident it is that it knows all it needs.(我们的大脑知道的越少,它就越自信地认为自己知道所有需要的东西。)”
根据文章第四段“The less our brain knows, the more confident it is that it knows all it needs.(我们的大脑知道的越少,它就越自信地认为自己知道所有需要的东西。)”以及最后一段“Is there something I’m omitting that would help me see their points better?(是否有我omitting的东西能帮助我更好地理解他们的观点?)”

Adding Chinese Elegance to the Corridor
I’m thrilled to share my ideas for the Chinese Culture Corridor. I strongly recommend traditional paper-cutting and Chinese calligraphy as the main cultural elements, which are classic symbols of Chinese art.
These works can be neatly hung on the corridor walls so that exchange students can enjoy them at any time. Besides, we can also set up small boards to introduce their cultural stories briefly.
This simple design will let foreign students feel Chinese charm closely, and it will surely be a highlight of our campus tour.

That evening, I sent a message to our class group chat. “Mrs. Harper has been hospitalized,” I typed, my fingers trembling slightly. “For months, she has brightened our Thursdays with her homemade lemon tea and unwavering kindness. Now, it is high time we repaid her generosity.” I then shared her unfinished mission: repairing the Reading Corner. To my astonishment, an overwhelming wave of support flooded in. Classmates volunteered to bring toolkits, sew the torn cushions, and repaint the shabby shelf. By midnight, a dozen of us had formed a repair team, driven by a shared determination to transform her handwritten wish into reality. No administrative order was issued; we were simply responding to the warmth she had sown in our hearts.
The following Thursday, the library doors finally opened again. What greeted Mrs. Harper was nothing short of a miracle. The once-broken chair stood firm, its leg reinforced; the shelf gleamed with fresh paint; and the cushions, meticulously stitched, lay invitingly by the window where sunlight poured in. A hand-painted sign read: “Mrs. Harper’s Corner — Where Kindness Finds a Home.” As she stepped inside, leaning on a cane, her eyes welled up with tears. I handed her a steaming cup of lemon tea and whispered, “For the long hours of reading ahead.” She clutched the cup, her smile radiating a quiet joy. In that moment, I realized that true education extends far beyond textbooks — it flourishes in the small, selfless acts of gratitude that bind a community together.
