For the entirety of my adult life, I have tried to avoid driving. I could claim all sorts of noble reasons for this: concern about the environment, a desire to save money, the health benefits gained from walking or biking.
But the main reason is that I’m anxious.
Then came the pandemic. After more than a year in our Manhattan neighborhood, my family of three was longing for new surroundings. So, I booked lodging in the Adirondacks, about a three-hour drive from New York City, and - for the first time in my life - signed up for formal driving lessons.
On that first day, I arrived queasy, muscles tensed and brain on high alert. My instructor, however, told me something that nobody ever had: “The fear never leaves you. You have to learn to make use of it.”
The idea that I did not need to completely erase my anxiety was freeing. Having some anxiety - especially when faced with a stressful situation - is not necessarily bad and can actually be helpful, experts say.
Anxiety is an uncomfortable emotion, often fueled by uncertainty. Too much anxiety can create intense, excessive and persistent worry and fear, not just about stressful events but also about everyday situations. However, according to the Yerkes-Dodson Law, a theory that originated in the early 20th century from experiments on mice, a certain degree of anxiety can help people anticipate obstacles and stay organized.
Seth Gillihan, a psychologist in Philadelphia, used to feel anxious before starting his workday. At the time, he focused on managing his anxiety rather than examining what was causing it, and eventually realized that the anxiety itself was not the problem. As a result, he cut back his clinic hours and spent additional time writing and podcasting, two of his passions. Now, Gillihan is grateful that he listened to what his body was trying to tell him rather than trying to suppress those feelings.
Furthermore, anxious people tend to be careful and cautious. They can channel those tendencies into conscientiousness. Alice Boyes, the author of The Anxiety Toolkit, was the kind of kid who was always having stomachaches before sports events at school. As she grew up, Boyes continued to worry about things going wrong, but she also started making contingency (应变的) plans. Being prepared for unforeseen events helped to calm her fears and reduce the likelihood of any worst-case scenarios.
In my case, preparing ahead of time was what eventually gave me the confidence to drive upstate. It took eight driving lessons, a nervous last-minute text to my instructor, and a rental car with advanced safety features. Finally, my family packed up and set off.
“Mama is a driver!” my four-year-old daughter exclaimed from the back seat.
“That’s right !” I replied, starting to feel a glimmer of pride. “I am.”
4. What was the main reason why the author had tried to avoid driving before the pandemic broke out?
A. She had never taken formal driving lessons.
B. She thought it unnecessary to make a road trip.
C. She was afraid of being involved in an accident.
D. She felt responsible for protecting the environment.
5. What does the underlined word in paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. Safe and sound. B. Nervous and concerned.
C. Thrilled and delighted. D. Worn out and frustrated.
6. What does the example of Seth Gillihanin in the text tell us?
A. The possibility of changing anxiety into a positive force.
B. The benefits of totally erasing anxiety through treatments.
C. The need to suppress anxious feelings to achieve one’s goals.
D. The significance of avoiding stressful situations to deal with anxiety.
7. What might be the best title of this text?
A. The Way of Driving B. The Truth About Anxiety
C. The Disadvantages of Feeling Anxious D. The Way to Overcome Obstacles in Life
【答案】4. C 5. B 6. A 7. B

Spanish scientist Pilar Bosch has found a way to use bacteria to repair 18th-century paintings.
Bosch, a microbiologist, tells Reuters she got the idea for the method while considering possibilities for a paper toward her doctoral degree. During this process, she discovered someone else’s paper that suggested bacteria can be used to restore artworks.
At around the same time, Bosch learned that her mother was struggling to find a good method for restoring 18th-century paintings. The paintings, by Spanish artist Antonio Palomino, sat in Santos Juanes — one of the oldest churches in the city of Valencia.
Bosch said her mother, Pilar Roig, noted how difficult the restoration process at the church was. One reason was the glue used to remove the paintings from the walls in the 1960s. The substance was nearly impossible to remove completely.
“My mother had a very difficult problem to solve and I found a paper about bacteria used to clean murals in Italy,” Bosch said. A fresco is a kind of painting that often appears across a large wall.
Bosch added she decided to write her doctoral paper on the same subject. That was more than ten years ago. Today, she gets to work with her mother on the church restoration. They are using the bacteria method to remove glue from artworks. The mother-daughter team feeds small amounts of the glue made from animal collagen (胶原) — to the bacteria. After a time, the bacteria begins to naturally produce enzymes (酶) to break down the glue. Then they mix the bacteria with a natural algae-based substance, called a gel, and place it onto the paintings. After about three hours, the gel mixture is removed, leaving the paintings glue-free.
Bosch’s mother, now 75, noted that in the past, restorers of artworks had to use traditional cleaning methods that “took hours and damaged the painting”. She noted that several other relatives in the family also work in art restoration. Bosch agreed, saying the work “certainly runs in the family”.
Bosch has also used her bacteria removal process in other restoration projects in Italy and Spain. And, she is now training other scientists to use a different kind of bacteria to clear walls of painted graffiti.
8. Where did Bosch get the idea for the bacteria-based restoration method?
A. From a research paper she read. B. From her mother’s suggestion.
C. From a conversation with other scientists. D. From her own paper toward her doctoral degree.
9. What does paragraph 6 mainly talk about?
A. The process of restoring paintings.
B. The complexity of the bacteria-based restoration method.
C. The complaint about the difficulty of the restoration work.
D. The history of the family’s engagement in art restoration.
10. What can be inferred from the passage?
A. Bosch’s method has been put into the markets at home and abroad.
B. The bacteria method is less damaging than traditional cleaning methods.
C. Bosch’s relatives have always been using innovative methods in art restoration.
D. The bacteria used in the restoration process will cause harm to the paintings.
11. Which of the following is the best title for the passage?
A. The Future of Art Restoration B. The Challenges of Art Restoration
C. Bacteria: Revolutionizing Art Restoration D. Bacteria: Disrupting Art Restoration
【答案】8. A 9. A 10. B 11. C
【解析】
【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了西班牙科学家Pilar Bosch如何通过细菌来修复18世纪画作,并介绍这种方法相比传统手段的优势及其应用情况。
【8题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段中“Bosch said her mother, Pilar Roig, noted how difficult the restoration process at the church was. One reason was the glue used to remove the paintings from the walls in the 1960s. The substance was nearly impossible to remove completely. (Bosch说,她的母亲皮拉尔·罗伊格提到在教堂进行修复工作有多么困难。其中一个原因是20世纪60年代用来将画作从墙上移除的胶水。这种物质几乎不可能完全清除)”以及第五段中“My mother had a very difficult problem to solve and I found a paper about bacteria used to clean murals in Italy. (我的母亲遇到了一个非常难解决的问题,而我发现了一篇关于在意大利使用细菌清洁壁画的论文)”可知,Bosch是从她读到的一篇研究论文中得到了基于细菌的修复方法的想法。故选A。
【9题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第六段“Bosch added she decided to write her doctoral paper on the same subject. That was more than ten years ago. Today, she gets to work with her mother on the church restoration. They are using the bacteria method to remove glue from artworks. The mother-daughter team feeds small amounts of the glue made from animal collagen — to the bacteria. After a time, the bacteria begins to naturally produce enzymes to break down the glue. Then they mix the bacteria with a natural algae-based substance, called a gel, and place it onto the paintings. After about three hours, the gel mixture is removed, leaving the paintings glue-free. 故选A。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据第七段“Bosch’s mother, now 75, noted that in the past, restorers of artworks had to use traditional cleaning methods that “took hours and damaged the painting”. (Bosch75岁的母亲提到,过去艺术品修复者不得不使用传统的清洁方法,这些方法“耗时且会损坏画作”)”可知,Bosch使用的细菌修复方法与传统方法不同,且她的母亲也认可这种新方法,由此可以推断出细菌方法比传统清洁方法对画作的损害更小。故选B。
【11题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段“Spanish scientist Pilar Bosch has found a way to use bacteria to repair 18th-century paintings. (西班牙科学家Pilar Bosch发现了一种利用细菌修复18世纪画作的方法)”可知,文章主要说明了Bosch发现并使用细菌修复18世纪画作的方法。故选C。
D
Though known for being violent, six-foot-long Humboldt squid (鱿鱼) in the Pacific Ocean, are good communicators,
It is not news that the squid can rapidly change the color of their skin-making different patterns for communication something other squid species are also known to do.
But it is totally dark where the Humboldt squid live, more than one thousand feet below the ocean surface. So their pattern is invisible. Instead, a new study suggests that they create backlighting for the patterns by making their bodies glow, like the screen of an ereader.
“Right now, what blows my mind in there’s probably squid talking to each other in the deep ocean and they’re probably sharing all sorts of cool information.” said Ben Burford, a graduate student at Stanford University.
Burford and his fallow researchers studied deep-water recordings made by remotely operated vehicles off the California coast. They found the squid make around 30 different patterns, some of which are only used around other squid, suggesting they’re used for communication. The squid also appear to reorder the patterns, almost like words in a sentence.
“That’s really exciting because then you can say a whole lot more based on their arrangement,” Burford said. “So, they could for instance say, hey, that fish over there is mine, and I’m the ruling squid.”
The findings could change the way scientists think about bioluminescence (生物荧光), which is used by many deep-sea animals to attract prey or a mate.
“We generally think of deep: sea stuff as having very simple displays because it’s a low-light environment,” said Mike Vecchione, a zoologist from the National Museum of Natural Museum of Natural History. “This turns some of our ideas about bioluminescence almost around upside down.”
The deep ocean is a challenging place to study, so Vecchione said there may be much more complexity to discover.
12. Which of the following is right about the Humboldt squid?
A. They are quite friendly to deep-sea animals.
B. They are much bigger than any other squid.
C. They can communicate in a low-light environment.
D. They have better ability to survive the violent ocean.
13. How did Burford and his team study the Humboldt squid living deep in the ocean?
A. By studying former recordings. B. By discussing with other scientists.
C. By comparing different types of squid. D. By using machines of high technology.
14. What do scientists commonly think of the use of bioluminescence by deep-sea animals?
A. It is used by deep-sea animals in a simple way.
B. It makes deep-sea animals more mysterious.
C. It makes the Humboldt squid easy to be found.
D. It makes it easy for the Humboldt sqord to communicate.
15. What is these scientists’ biggest discovery of the Humboldt squid?
A. Their ability to ling deep in the water. B. Their unique use of bioluminescence.
C. Their hard living conditions in the sea. D. Their ways to attract preys or mates.
【答案】12. C 13. D 14. A 15. B

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
When Tanya Eby was in sixth grade, her world took a cruel turn. The girls she’d shared lunches and games with held a secret meeting, and then told her she wasn’t cool enough to be with them. Overnight, they ignored her, leaving her lonely and confused.
But that was just the start of her pain. Months later, her parents sent her elder brother — her anchor (支柱) who’d taught her to ride a bike and comforted her after nightmares — to live with her grandpa. She woke up one morning to find his bed empty, no goodbye note. Soon, her dad left too. Every person she loved seemed to disappear without a word.
One day, she cried in class, tightly holding a blue notebook with a cat on it. Her teacher, Mrs. Welch, gently led her to the teachers’ office. In tears, Eby told her everything — the lost friends, the missing brother and the endless confusion. Then, Mrs. Welch comforted her softly, with a warm and gentle smile, pulled her into a warm hug and let her cry. That simple hug felt like a lifeline, making she’d be okay.
Years passed and Eby became a college writing teacher. She understood Mrs. Welch’s act of kindness had shaped her — helping her empathize (共情) with students hiding their own struggles. She often told her students how tiny, kind moments can change lives.
One afternoon, while sorting old photos, she found a faded class photo — there she was, smiling faintly next to Mrs. Welch. She stared at it, a thought popping into her head: What if she could find Mrs. Welch and say thank you in person? She grabbed her phone, telling her niece Molly that she wanted to find her former teacher Mrs. Welch. Her niece totally supported her. Encouraged, she was determined to track down the teacher who’d given her hope.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
To find Mrs. Welch, Eby turned to her former classmates.

Eby waited until the children around Mrs. Welch left, and then she walked over.
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】One possible version:
To find Mrs. Welch, Eby turned to her former classmates. One classmate recalled running into Mrs. Welch, who was volunteering as a reading instructor at their local library. With this clue, Eby and Molly began their search, yet the progress was slow. Just as she was about to give up, Molly sent a text with a link to a local library event — “Storytime with Retired Teacher Margaret Welch”. Eby’s hands trembled as she saw the photo of Mrs. Welch. She rushed to the library the next day, heart pounding, and saw an elderly woman sitting in a circle of students, reading a book.
Eby waited until the children around Mrs. Welch left, and then she walked over. “Mrs. Welch? I’m Tanya Eby — your student.” The woman looked up, eyes widened. “Tanya? I could never forget you — you loved that blue notebook with a cat on it.” Eby cried with joy as Mrs. Welch hugged her, finally saying the words she’d carried for 30 years: “Thank you for holding me when I felt so alone.” Mrs. Welch patted her back, tears in her eyes. The two sat chatting for hours, the warmth of the teacher’s kindness bridging decades of time.

The Way to Overcome Obstacles in Life
C

注意:
1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
To find Mrs. Welch, Eby turned to her former classmates.
