One possible version:
Dear Dennis,
How’s it going? Glad to receive your e-mail. I’m writing to tell you something about the running race of our spring sports meeting last Friday.
Chen Jie and Li Mei, who came from different classes, were both competing in the 800-meter race. In the first half, they spared no effort to take the lead, with Chen Jie just a little behind. When there was only 10 meters left, something unexpected happened — Li Mei fell down. Without thinking twice, Chen Jie stopped and came to lift her up. The two girls supported each other and struggled forward. Finally they crossed the finishing line arm in arm with big smiles on their faces. All the students present burst out cheering for the two special champions.
In my eyes, Chen Jie has set a good example for us students and I am really touched by her kind act. Not only did the two girls win the first prize for their outstanding performance, but they also won the day with great sportsmanship and true friendship.

One afternoon in March, I received a phone call from Mrs. Miller, the head teacher of Wilson Primary School, where my son studied. At Wilson, Mrs. Miller was known for her strictness. For this reason, the moment I heard her name, my heart was in my mouth.
My son Brian was in fourth grade then, and he had always been a good kid. Even so, a mother’s imagination still ran wild in seconds. Then Mrs. Miller said calmly, “Brian was sent to my office today.” My mind immediately jumped to trouble. I held my breath and waited for the worst. But Mrs. Miller laughed softly, “Well, Brian isn’t in trouble. He won praise for his behavior from his class teacher, Ms. White.” I was silent for a moment. “She told me Brian stayed after class to help Vivian, his classmate, clean up some spilled papers,” Mrs. Miller continued. “He’s always polite and willing to help others. We felt you should know that.” Her words warmed my heart. Like many parents, I was used to hearing from school when something went wrong. This time, the phone call brought me something different.
That evening, Brian came home with a small certificate (证书) from school. When I asked why he had helped the student, he simply said, “She looked upset, so I wanted to help.”
Later, I learned that Mrs. Miller had just started a family-school project to strengthen the connection between families and school. Teachers were encouraged to focus on students’ character — kindness, helpfulness, responsibility and so on, not only their grades. Parents would receive phone calls so they could celebrate these moments together with the school.
A kind action may seem small, but support from both family and school can gradually shape a child’s future.
26. How did the mother feel at first when she got the call from Mrs. Miller?
A. Nervous. B. Angry. C. Warm. D. Happy.
27. Why did Mrs. Miller laugh softly during the phone call?
A. To have fun. B. To thank the mother.
C. To play a joke. D. To cheer the mother up.
28. Which of the following does the underlined word “She” in paragraph 2 refer to?
A. Brian’s mother. B. Mrs. Miller. C. Ms. White. D. Vivian.
29. Why did Brian receive a certificate from school?
A. He got good grades in a test.
B. He gave another student a hand.
C. He did well in a soccer game.
D. He finished his homework on time.
30. What may the students learn through the project?
A. Knowledge is power. B. Practice makes perfect.
C. Character matters a lot. D. It’s never too old to learn.
C
Do you like DIY? Have you ever tried magazine collaging (拼贴画)? There’s a reason why it is making a big comeback. It provides an easy way to relax and make something by hand while staying away from phones and computers.
This art form, including cutting pictures out of magazines and putting them onto a piece of paper, is full of fun. One of the best things about magazine collaging is how easy it is to start. Unlike other hobbies that require expensive materials or training, you can start collaging with just a magazine, a glue, and a pair of scissors.
Magazines are surely necessary materials for this hobby. If you don’t have magazines at home, find cheap or free ones at thrift stores (慈善商店). You can also use junk mail, stamps, and even packaging (包装). “These things can make your works more personalized,” says Ms. Drewett, a professional collage artist.
Once you have materials ready to go, it’s time to start cutting. What you need to do is to cut out all the pictures that interest you. Then consider having a theme to plan your pictures. Drewett says, “We explore all kinds of themes. Sometimes we focus on flowers for fun. Other times we talk about our daily life. We also get ideas from art history.”
When the pictures are well prepared, map them out on your paper. This is a fluid process and you might move things around several times. “I go back to my work again and again. It may take a few tries to get it right. Just follow your heart and enjoy yourself,” as Drewett shares. Finally, when everything looks good, use the glue to stick them on the paper, and your work of art comes to life.
Magazine collaging is less about perfection and more about enjoying the act of making and self-expression. The beauty of this hobby is that anyone can create their own works with just a few materials and an active imagination.
31. Why does collaging become popular again?
A. It is relaxing and enjoyable. B. It requires special training.
C. It is useful and challenging. D. It needs expensive materials.
32. What does the underlined word “fluid” in paragraph 5 mean?
A. Boring. B. Natural. C. Changing. D. Strange.
33. What is the right order of making collaging according to the text?
①Find a theme.
②Glue the pictures to the paper.
③Map out the pictures.
④Cut out the pictures.
⑤Prepare magazines.
A. ①⑤④③② B. ⑤①④②③ C. ⑤④①③② D. ①④⑤②③
34. What can we learn about collaging?
A. It’s all about daily life. B. Little imagination is needed.
C. Computers can help a lot. D. Anyone can take it up as a hobby.
35. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. A Simple Art Form B. A Big Discovery C. A Special Magazine D. A Beautiful Painting

On a hot summer afternoon, cities and towns are usually hotter than the nearby countryside areas. This is not just a feeling. Some cities can be as much as 7℃ hotter. Scientists call this the “urban heat island” effect (城市热岛效应).
This effect is closely connected with the materials used in city buildings, which usually take in large amounts of heat from sunlight during the day. Instead of cooling quickly after sunset, these materials slowly give out the stored heat back into the air. As a result, cities remain warm for a lot longer. In certain situations, high temperatures can even be deadly.
To cut urban heat, many cities have turned to trees, which work like natural air conditioners in two main ways. First, they provide shade (树荫), preventing streets and buildings from heating up too much. Second, trees cool the air through a process called transpiration — water inside the leaves enters the air, lowering temperatures nearby.
To understand how effective trees really are, researchers studied air temperature and tree cover data (数据) from nearly 9,000 cities and the findings were surprising. Trees reduce the “urban heat island” effect by almost 50% all over the world. Since cities are usually 1 ~ 3℃ hotter than nearby countryside areas, trees can lower temperatures by about 0.5~1.5℃ in many places, which can have an influence on city heat during the long hot summer.
However, scientists warn that planting trees alone cannot completely solve the problem. Even with large planting projects, urban trees may cut down only a bit of heat by the middle of this century. Because of this, experts believe cities need more solutions. For example, reflective building materials can help. At the same time, ways of cutting greenhouse gas (气体) remain necessary.
Trees are powerful and valuable. They cool cities, improve air quality and make urban life more comfortable. But in a warming world, they work best as part of a larger plan rather than as the only answer.
36. What makes cities hotter than countryside areas?
A. Water pollution. B. Urban buildings. C. Strong sunlight. D. Waste materials.
37. What is paragraph 3 mainly about as for trees?
A. How they cut greenhouse gas. B. How they clear air in cities.
C. How they cool the nearby areas. D. How they protect the environment.
38. Why does the writer list numbers in paragraph 4?
A. To collect the data of tree cover. B. To show the influence of trees.
C. To praise researchers’ hard work. D. To make predictions of the effect.
39. What does the writer suggest in the last two paragraphs?
A. More plans are needed to cut heat.
B. Trees help to solve every problem.
C. Experts have done enough research.
D. Green spaces will increase greatly.
40. Which section of a website is the text probably taken from?
A. Travel. B. Technology. C. Custom. D. Environment.
第二节 阅读七选五(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Life is full of challenges, but every difficulty also creates a chance to grow and discover the strength you didn’t know you had. So how can challenges in life bring out meaningful growth? 41
When you’re going through something hard, a strong and encouraging support system can make a big difference. 42 You can turn to your friends, family and community to get the support you need to keep moving forward.
43 Getting enough rest, eating well, and exercising more are helpful ways to take care of yourself during difficult moments. According to Healthline, activities like mindful breathing, listening to your favorite music, or going outside to change your focus can also help you a lot. These common acts can do wonders for your overall health.
Another important way is to put your heart into what you can control. In life, it’s easy to get worried about what you can’t master. 44 That can help you keep going rather than feeling helpless. Think of challenges as locked doors: staring at the door won’t open it, but looking for the key — through your actions — just might.
Your mindset (思维模式) also plays a big role in how you face challenges. Developing a growth mindset makes you believe that your abilities can improve through effort. 45 Accept that they are a normal part of life, and you can face them more bravely and actively.
Remember, you have the ability to overcome challenges in life. By staying calm and focused, you can deal with even the most difficult situations with confidence and strength.
A. Make good use of your time to study more.
B. So why not focus on the things you can do?
C. It encourages you to do some volunteering work.
D. By following these ways, you are sure to make it.
E. Acts of self-care may help you overcome challenges too.
