I am Barbara Sloan, 51 years old. I want to share my experience about an unusual friendship. How many friendships last for decades without meeting? That’s what happened between me and my French pen friend Michèle.
We began writing to each other as teenagers, but 36 years passed before we met face-to-face. I started looking for pen friends because I was the only child in my family and I felt lonely. I still remember when my father brought me an envelope containing (包含) Michèle’s first letter and photo. Over the years, we exchanged family pictures, gifts, and souvenirs.
In 1972, I married Alan, a decorator. Michèle sent me a golden necklace as a wedding gift. When my children Lindsey, Duncan and Robert were born, she sent presents every Christmas. In November 1998, while wrapping Michèle’s Christmas present, Lindsey suggested, “Why don’t you visit her?”
A few weeks later, I wrote to Michèle proposing a visit. The next year, I flew to France. At the airport, after waiting anxiously, a blonde woman called out, “Barbara?” I responded, “Michèle?” We hugged tightly and spent a wonderful week together. I considered staying longer, but Alan called to say Robert was ill, so I returned home.
Two years later, Michèle wrote that she was planning to visit Britain. Alan and I went to the airport but waited in vain. Concerned, Alan called Michele’s home. Her husband told us she had died in an accident hours before her flight. I was devastated (悲痛欲绝的) and stopped speaking for two weeks. Later, I continued writing letters to Michèle’s family as if she were still alive.

Taking notes (笔记) is an important part of learning. Students listen to the teacher. They write down the important things. Or they use a computer. These days, many students take a computer to class to type (打字) their notes.
Some people think that using a computer is better. People type faster than they write. That means they can write more. If you can type fast, you can type every word the teacher says.
Computers are becoming very common in classrooms. Almost every student in university has a computer small enough to take to class in order to type notes. Fewer students write things down. So there is a trend in schools now to spend less time on teaching kids how to write. Schools are moving away from teaching younger students how to write by hand. Many people see no need for writing by hand.
However, studies advise that it is good to write things down. When people can’t write every word, they have to think about it more. They have to pick out what is important. And the act of writing seems to help them to remember. Studies show that people who write down their notes remember the information better. A new study, done by Princeton University and University of California, found that students who took notes by hand learned more than those who used a computer. In the study, 65 university students listened to the teacher and took notes with pens or computers. Then they did tests about how well they remembered and understood the lesson. Results show that pen users do better than those who take notes with their computers.
33.People think it’s better to use a computer to take notes because they can ________.
A.get more useful information
B.find everything on computer
C.type faster than they write
D.get every word the teacher says
34.If we say something is a “trend”, we may mean it is “becoming ________”.
A.possible B.simple C.common D.important
35.The writer tells us it is good to write things down by ________.
A.telling us an interesting story
B.asking and answering questions
C.giving us a piece of advice
D.showing the results of a study
36.What can we learn from the passage?
A.Schools won’t teach students how to write by hand.
B.Writing the things down can help us to remember.
C.Students need to take a computer to class in university.
D.It’s important for students to learn how to take notes.

①Blind boxes have become very popular toys in China. The idea is simple: the buyers will not know which toy it is until they open the boxes, so it’s a bit like gambling (赌博). You may feel happy if you get the things you want, but more often, you can’t get what you like. People spend lots of money on their luck.
②Pop Mart is a famous company. It began as a small shop in Beijing’s Zhongguancun area selling different kinds of products. Later, the company found that toys were the most popular and best-selling products. ________
③The idea for blind boxes was from Gashapon (扭蛋机) in Japan, which sells blind toys. Although the toys inside Pop Mart’s blind boxes cost only about 2 dollars, they sell for around 8 dollars each. This brings the company a lot of money. Pop Mart had around 6. 3 billion (十亿) yuan in revenue (收入) in the year of 2023, 1. 7 billion yuan more compared with (与……
④Nowadays, young people really like this kind of toy. Some buyers have collected over 1,000 dolls. In their eyes, the dolls are symbols of their personalities, or they just want to share something cute.
⑤However, the blind boxes are as hard to stop as gambling. Some toys are hard to get, so people sell them at higher prices in the second-hand markets. Some countries make rules to control the selling of blind boxes, and they work out well. These rules aim to stop over-marketing and help protect buyers, especially kids, from buying things without thinking and being cheated.
⑥To keep growing, Pop Mart needs to keep making something new and sell more toys. Labubu was a big success. The founder wishes that Pop Mart can be a world-famous company like Disney one day.
37.Why is buying blind boxes like gambling?
A.Because many buyers like it very much. B.Because buyers might get nothing.
C.Because buyers don’t know what they’ll get. D.Because it is very expensive for buyers.
38.Which sentence can be put in the ________?
A.They thought selling toys might be the best choice.
B.They chose to sell the shop to get more blind boxes.
C.But many other companies also sold blind boxes then.
D.But they kept selling different products in their shop.
39.Which of the following can show the revenue of Pop Mart in 2022 and 2023?
A. B.
C. D.
40.Which of the following statements may be true according to the passage?
A.Blind boxes are only popular in Beijing City.
B.Young people will refuse blind boxes because of the price.
C.More countries may set rules for selling blind boxes.
D.Pop Mart will surely become the next Disney.
If your parents are out for a week, you’re left with 800 yuan. How will you spend it? It would be silly to spend the money at the mall, especially if you have great clothes at home, right? A smarter way is to spend that money on food and journeys. You’d probably also want to save some money for a difficult situation. 41 It’s all about deciding what matters most and how much you want to spend on those things.
Learning your priorities (优先事项) is the most important. 42 Suppose your dream phone costs 1,000 yuan—saving 200 yuan this week brings you 1/5 closer! The next time your friend invites you to an expensive place, you’d better refuse.
43 You must be creative. Instead of meeting your friends at the restaurant and then leaving for the movies, you could invite them to your home. 44 You can even bake cookies with the bread or play board games you’ve had for years. Laughter doesn’t cost a penny! It’s a lot cheaper.
More suggestions can be found on the Internet. Websites like “Teen Budget Tips” share recipes for 10-yuan meals, and local apps list free winter events. As a young person, you have chances to try different methods. In fact, even adults make mistakes at times. 45
A.This is how you learn to budget (做预算).
B.Saving money is important for unexpected situations.
C.But having a budget doesn’t mean you can’t have fun.
D.So, to be a wise spender, just try to improve your budget.
E.You can buy some bread at the supermarket and watch a movie online.
F.For example, if you plan to buy a smartphone, you should save some money first.

From “eating dazi” to “working dazi” to “traveling dazi”, a new social trend (趋势) is taking off in China among young people. It means people find new ways to communicate with others and share their 46 (think).
Dazi makes social life much 47 (easy) and more comfortable. Unlike traditional friends who often need to hang out with each other and keep in touch 48 (close), a dazi is a more relaxed social partner. 49 (get) along with a dazi will greatly reduce social costs.
In China, many young people are turning to dazi relationships to deal with their busy lives. Dazi is a quick and convenient way to make friends. It provides a way for people to build 50 (far) social connections and make their lives more meaningful.
However, finding a dazi often comes with some danger. This includes meeting strangers by 51 (you) and it can put you at risk of harm. So be careful when you meet an online dazi. 52 (stay) safe, remember to meet your online dazi in public places like shopping malls and let someone know where you go. If you are in 53 (dangerous), you will be saved immediately.
A short-term friendship formed through dazi can probably turn into a long-term relationship. It’s important to respect each other’s personal space when building a relationship, so that the relationship will be 54 (end) and won’t fade (消逝) easily.
If you follow these tips, I believe you 55 (improve) the relationship with your dazi.

My grandma is a gentle old lady. Like many women of her time, she has a talent for sewing (缝纫). She made all my childhood clothes on her own. As a young girl, rather than playing outside with my friends, I liked staying with my grandmother to help her sew. I was so interested in getting the thread (线) through the eyes of the needle (针).
Later, instead of making clothes, my grandmother would sew gloves or insoles (鞋垫) for me. She cannot be with me all the time, but the love passed by her needle and thread warms me.
It was my grandma who sparked my enthusiasm (热情) for sewing and taught me how to show love and care. Almost a year ago, I was trying to give a birthday present to my friend. Then, I thought, “Why don’t I sew her a gift?” I decided to make her a pencil case. I cut out the pattern (图案) from my old skirt, drew a design and started sewing. It took me many days to finish it. The final result wasn’t as pretty as I imagined. But it was the best pencil case that I could make.
Just yesterday, my friend called me and said that every time she sees the pencil case, she thinks of me and the warm feeling.
Sewing is a fantastic art form that can convey our love and care.

Some people think talent makes life easy. But Wang’s path was far from 15 . In middle school, her grades were not good at 16 —she was not in the top 100. But she didn’t 17 . She worked very hard, and later became one of the top ten students in her grade. At the age of sixteen, she 18 Peking University and learned more about math.
In 2011, Wang went to France to study. “I felt a little 19 at that time,” the girl said. “I gave up on math and studied architecture for six months. Then I remembered 20 hard I had learned math before. I only doubted 21 because my classmates were all very smart.” Wang became 22 again and returned to math. She studied even 23 and got her PhD (博士学位) at MIT (美国麻省理工学院).
This past February, Wang did something really 24 . She solved a century-old math problem—the Kakeya conjecture. Mathematicians (数学家) all 25 the world were so surprised and excited! Now, Wang is a professor (教授) at two great universities.

C.giving us a piece of advice
D.showing the results of a study
36.What can we learn from the passage?
A.Schools won’t teach students how to write by hand.

42.根据后文中“Suppose your dream phone costs 1, 000 yuan—saving 200 yuan this week brings you 1/5 closer! ”可知,后文举例“存钱买手机”,选项F“如计划买手机需先存钱”直接对应例子,故选F。
43.根据“You must be creative. Instead of meeting your friends at the restaurant and then leaving for the movies, you could invite them to your home.”

根据“A rich cook sent for twenty of the poorest children in the town and said to them...Take it home and come back to me every day at this hour for more.”
根据“there was a famine”可知,孩子们很饿;hungry“饥饿的”,形容词作定语。故填(h)ungry。
根据“Mary took the smallest piece, which was all left in the basket”可知,篮子里最后剩下最小的一块,所以孩子们都在抢夺最大的;large“大的”,定冠词the后填写其最高级。故填(l)argest。
根据“did not fight with the other children”可知,玛丽很安静地站着;quietly“安静地”,副词修饰动词。故填(q)uietly。
故填(a)lmost。
根据“The silver must have fallen into the dough by mistake. Hurry up, Mary.”
根据“I put the silver pieces into the smallest bread for you as a prize.”
根据“I put the silver pieces into the smallest bread for you as a prize.”
