Imagine this: You pick up your phone for a video call with a friend. Not only can you see their faces and hear their voice, but you can also smell the cookies they just baked. It sounds like something out of a science fiction movie, but could it actually happen?
Smells are created by tiny molecules (分子) that float through the air and reach your nose. Your nose then sends signals to your brain, which identifies the smell. So, could your phone send these smell molecules to you? Scientists are working on it.
Think about how your phone screen works. It doesn’t have every colour stored inside it. Instead, it uses just three colours to create millions of different hues and shades. Now imagine something similar for smells. Scientists are developing digital (数字的) scent technology that uses a small number of different cartridges (盒), each containing a specific scent. Each smell could have a specific recipe made up of different amounts of the ingredients in the cartridges. These scent cartridges could mix to create different smells. Future phones might use digital codes to produce these smells. When you receive a digital scent code, your phone could mix different scents from the cartridges. This mix would then be released through a small vent (小孔) on the phone, allowing you to smell it.
However, there are challenges. One is designing a system that can produce thousands of smells using only a few cartridges. Another is controlling how strong a scent should be and how long it should last. And the cartridges should also be easy to refill, and the chemicals in them should be safe to breathe. These hurdles make it a challenging but exciting area of research.
Even though we’re not there yet, scientists are working hard to make smell phones a reality. One day, you might not only see and hear your friend’s birthday party over the phone but also smell the candles they blew out!

Nowadays in many Chinese cities, schools have made class breaks longer. They used to be 10 minutes, but now they are 15 minutes. This change is to help students and teachers go outside and play more.
Before, the short breaks didn’t give students much time to play outside, especially if they were in big buildings with many floors. Sometimes, schools didn’t let students leave their rooms during breaks because they were worried about safety.
Now, with longer class breaks, schools want to make sure students can play and exercise for at least 30 minutes every day. Cities like Beijing, Tianjin, and Qingdao have started doing this. In Beijing, they made the breaks longer by taking time from the longer breaks in the middle of the day. This didn’t change when students start and finish school.
In Wuxi, a city in Jiangsu Province, schools have 15-minute breaks and make sure students have one gym class each day. In order to help students play outside and talk with their friends, schools ask students to exercise for at least 100 minutes every day. The people in charge of schools there said they want to give the break time back to the students.
In Qingdao, a school started playing different games outside, like jump rope and hula hoop (呼啦圈), and also had puzzles to play inside during the longer breaks. They organize the students by the floor they are on so everyone can play outside. A check in May showed that more students in Qingdao are getting good scores on their health tests.
27.In which places have students started to exercise for at least 30 minutes every day?
A.Beijing and Qingdao. B.Tianjin and Wuxi. C.Wuxi and Qingdao. D.Beijing and Wuxi.
28.What does the underlined word “this” in Paragraph 3 refer to?
A.Making class breaks longer. B.Taking time from the longer breaks.
C.Starting and finishing school later. D.Letting students leave their rooms.
29.Which is not the reason why schools these days have made class breaks longer in China?
A.To make students go outside and play more. B.To make students become healthier.
C.To make students study harder. D.To let the teachers have a rest.
30.What is the article mainly about?
A.The short class breaks make students feel tired.
B.Chinese schools make class breaks longer.
C.Chinese students have more after-school activities.
D.Schools should start playing different games outside.

Close Friends, Think Alike?
“What! You, too? I thought I was the only one.” Have you ever said something like this to someone?
It seems that similarity often helps form friendship. The Greek thinker Aristotle once said, “People see friendship as a matter of similarity; they say that we love those who are like ourselves.” Some scientists from the University of California said friends do have similar behaviors (行为).
Forty-two university students took part in a test. Some of them were good friends, while some of them didn’t know each other. Each student watched the same set of videos, including a comedy, a discussion and a soccer match.
According to the results, friends who watched the same video reacted (作出反应) in similar ways. Similar parts of their brains were active while watching the videos, especially those parts about motivation (动机), learning and memory.
“Seeing one’s friends have similar behaviors will reinforce (强化) one’s own values, opinions and interests,” the lead scientist Carolyn Parkinson said.
A.Now, there is some science behind this idea.
B.If so, you may become friends with this person.
C.At the same time, scientists scanned (扫描) their brains and recorded the activity.
D.But brain similarity is not the only thing that can bring friendship.
E.However, people who weren’t friends had different reactions to the same videos.

23.How does the author begin the article to attract the readers?
A.By describing a real-life app of smell phones.
B.By describing a possible future situation.
C.By listing challenges in creating smell phones.
D.By explaining the scientific background.
24.According to the article, how do phones possibly produce smells in the future?
A.By using digital codes and scent cartridges.
B.By sending actual smell molecules through the air.
C.By projecting images and sounds together.
D.By creating smells directly from the screen.
25.What does the underlined word “hurdles” most probably mean in Chinese?
A.技术 B.担忧 C.障碍 D.气味
26.What’s the author’s attitude towards the future of the digital scent technology?
A.Uncertain. B.Hopeful. C.Doubtful. D.Worried.

A.Beijing and Qingdao. B.Tianjin and Wuxi. C.Wuxi and Qingdao. D.Beijing and Wuxi.

A.Making class breaks longer. B.Taking time from the longer breaks.

29.Which is not the reason why schools these days have made class breaks longer in China?
A.To make students go outside and play more. B.To make students become healthier.
C.To make students study harder. D.To let the teachers have a rest.
30.What is the article mainly about?
A.The short class breaks make students feel tired.
