But it is totally dark where the Humboldt squid live, more than one thousand feet below the ocean surface. So their pattern is invisible.Instead,a new study suggests that they create backlighting for the patterns by making their bodies glow, like the screen of an ereader. "Right now, what blows my mind in there's probably squid talking to each other in the deep ocean and they're probably sharing all sorts of cool information.said Ben Burford,a graduate student at Stanford University. Burford and his fellow researchers studied deep-water recordings made by remotely operated vehicles off the California coast. They found the squid make around 30 different patterns, some of which are only used around other squid, suggesting they're used for communication. The squid also appear to reorder the patterns, almost like words in a sentence. "That's really exciting because then you can say a whole lot more based on their arrangement,"Burford said."So, they could for instance say, hey, that fish over there is mine, andI'm the ruling squid." The findings could change the way scientists think about bioluminescence(生物荧光),which is used by many deep-sea animals to attract prey or a mate. "We generally think of deep:sea stuff as having very simple displays because it's a low-light environment,"said Mike Vecchione,a zoologist from the National Museum of Natural History."This turns some of our ideas about bioluminescence almost around upside down." The deep ocean is a challenging place to study,so Vecchione said there may be much more complexity to discover. 12.Which of the following is right about the Humboldt squid? D.By using machines of high technology. 14.What do scientists commonly think of the use of bioluminescence by deep-sea animals? A.It is used by deep-sea animals in a simple way. I could never forget you — you loved that blue notebook with a cat on it.” Eby cried with joy as Mrs. Welch hugged her, finally saying the words she’d carried for 30 years: “Thank you for holding me when I felt so alone.” Mrs. Welch patted her back, tears in her eyes. A.The Future of Art Restoration B.The Challenges of Art Restoration C.Bacteria: Revolutionizing Art Restoration D.Bacteria: Disrupting Art Restoration D Though known for being violent, six-foot-long Humboldt squid (鱿鱼) in the Pacific Ocean, are good communicators, It is not news that the squid can rapidly change the color of their skin-making different patterns for communication something other squid species are also known to do. But it is totally dark where the Humboldt squid live, more than one thousand feet below the ocean surface. So their pattern is invisible. Instead, a new study suggests that they create backlighting for the patterns by making their bodies glow, like the screen of an ereader. “Right now, what blows my mind in there’s probably squid talking to each other in the deep ocean and they’re probably sharing all sorts of cool information.” said Ben Burford, a graduate student at Stanford University. Burford and his fellow researchers studied deep-water recordings made by remotely operated vehicles off the California coast. They found the squid make around 30 different patterns, some of which are only used around other squid, suggesting they’re used for communication. The squid also appear to reorder the patterns, almost like words in a sentence. “That’s really exciting because then you can say a whole lot more based on their arrangement,” Burford said. “So, they could for instance say, hey, that fish over there is mine, and I’m the ruling squid.” The findings could change the way scientists think about bioluminescence (生物荧光), which is used by many deep-sea animals to attract prey or a mate. “We generally think of deep: sea stuff as having very simple displays because it’s a low-light environment,” said Mike Vecchione, a zoologist from the National Museum of Natural History. “This turns some of our ideas about bioluminescence almost around upside down.” The deep ocean is a challenging place to study, so Vecchione said there may be much more complexity to discover. 12.Which of the following is right about the Humboldt squid? A.They are quite friendly to deep-sea animals. B.They are much bigger than any other squid. C.They can communicate in a low-light environment. D.They have better ability to survive the violent ocean. 13.How did Burford and his team study the Humboldt squid living deep in the ocean? A.By studying former recordings. B.By discussing with other scientists. C.By comparing different types of squid. D.By using machines of high technology. 14.What do scientists commonly think of the use of bioluminescence by deep-sea animals? A.It is used by deep-sea animals in a simple way. B.It makes deep-sea animals more mysterious. C.It makes the Humboldt squid easy to be found. D.It makes it easy for the Humboldt squid to communicate. 15.What is these scientists’ biggest discovery of the Humboldt squid? A.Their ability to live deep in the water. B.Their unique use of bioluminescence. C.Their hard living conditions in the sea. D.Their ways to attract preys or mates. 第二节 (共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Most people agree that college is the time when things change the most in their lives. The girls she’d shared lunches and games with held a secret meeting, and then told her she wasn’t cool enough to be with them. Overnight, they ignored her, leaving her lonely and confused. But that was just the start of her pain. Months later, her parents sent her elder brother — her anchor (支柱) who’d taught her to ride a bike and comforted her after nightmares — to live with her grandpa. She woke up one morning to find his bed empty, no goodbye note. Soon, her dad left too. Every person she loved seemed to disappear without a word. One day, she cried in class, tightly holding a blue notebook with a cat on it. Her teacher, Mrs. Welch, gently led her to the teachers’ office. In tears, Eby told her everything — the lost friends, the missing brother and the endless confusion. Then, Mrs. Welch comforted her softly, with a warm and gentle smile, pulled her into a warm hug and let her cry. That simple hug felt like a lifeline, making she’d be okay. Years passed and Eby became a college writing teacher. She understood Mrs. Welch’s act of kindness had shaped her — helping her empathize (共情) with students hiding their own struggles. She often told her students how tiny, kind moments can change lives. One afternoon, while sorting old photos, she found a faded class photo — there she was, smiling faintly next to Mrs. Welch. She stared at it, a thought popping into her head: What if she could find Mrs. Welch and say thank you in person? She grabbed her phone, telling her niece Molly that she wanted to find her former teacher Mrs. Welch. Her niece totally supported her. Encouraged, she was determined to track down the teacher who’d given her hope. 注意: 1. 续写词数应为150个左右; 2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 To find Mrs. Welch, Eby turned to her former classmates. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Eby waited until the children around Mrs. Welch left, and then she walked over. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 试卷第1页(共3页) 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
