三、阅读理解
On the side of the road in the Hoh Xil Nature Reserve in China’s Qinghai Province, you might see a fat wolf. It is always shaking its tail and rolling on the ground in front of the passing cars in hopes of getting a meal. However, the wolf was skin and bones (骨瘦如柴) a few months ago.
It is said that the wolf was kicked out of the wolf group because of its poor hunting ability. But that all changed after a passing driver gave it two pies and posted a video of it online in July 2023. This quickly made the wolf popular, with many people coming to the area to provide it with food.
Since then, the wolf has turned to passing drivers for snacks that are high in oil, sugar and salt. Then, more wolves have joined. The wolf’s change has led many people to find humor in its similarity to a pet dog. But the change means that it is losing its ability to live in nature. The ability is significant to wild animals.
“Wolves are part of the food chain in the ecosystem (生态系统). And if people continue to feed them, their habits will change. This will break their role in the ecosystem and influence the stability (稳定性) of the ecosystem,” said Qi Xinzhang, deputy director of the Xining Wildlife Park in the province. People care about wild animals, but feeding sometimes can cause harm to animals and themselves as well.
“It is a good thing that the event has caught people’s attention. Only when more people have a better knowledge of wild animals can they help them in the right way,” said Qi.

Have you heard of microplastics (微塑料)? Can we see them in our daily life? Are they good or bad for human beings?
Microplastics are very small. According to National Geographic, microplastics are usually less than five millimeters (毫米) in size. But they bring big problems. This small size lets them go everywhere, even in water and air. They don’t break down easily and can stay in the environment for hundreds of years. A new study said that by 2040, microplastic pollution could be twice as bad as it is now.
Microplastics are very small pieces of plastic. They come from many places. For example, about 60 percent of material made into clothes is plastic. Every time when the clothes are washed, they produce microplastics. When water bottles and other big plastic products are left outside, they break down slowly into microplastics. These microplastics can be bad for our health and even cause cancer. In August, the Conversation reported that scientists found microplastics in people’s brains for the first time. They may hurt brain cells (细胞) and change how the brain works.
Wild animals are also at risk from microplastic pollution. Each year, up to three million tons of plastics end up in the ocean. As they break down day by day, they become virtually invisible gradually (逐渐地). Fish may eat them by mistake and become very sick.
To deal with the problem, scientists think the best way right now is to make and use less plastic. As students, we can reduce plastic things in our daily life, such as using glass or metal cups instead of plastic bottles and cups.

Cities around the world often need to push down old buildings to make way for modern looks. However, Sydney, Australia, has discovered an amazing and eco-friendly way to face this challenge.
The AMP Center, once the tallest building in Sydney, was built in 1976. As time passed, the building became not suitable for use. Its owners decided to replace it, but they were unwilling to tear it down completely. Tearing down this 45-floor building and building a new one would cause serious environmental pollution. After thinking twice, they came up with an idea to build a new building on the basis of the old one, then creating the world’s first recycled skyscraper (摩天大楼).
First, workers carefully removed some of the old building’s parts. Next, they set up a new building next to the old one and connected them. Finally, they covered the combined (组合) surfaces with glass, creating the new skyscraper. This creative method not only saved a lot of building time but also reduced the costs.
This new skyscraper is named Quay Quarter Tower. It stands at a height of 206 meters, with 50 floors. The tower serves as housing, offices, shops, bars, restaurants, a museum, and a new hotel.
Besides its different uses, Quay Quarter Tower is a success for both the environment and climate change mitigation (缓和). It has reduced producing over 12,000 tons of CO₂ because of its green design. It stands as a shining example of what the future building can look like.

April 22nd is World Earth Day—a day to remind people to protect the earth. So on that day, our family held an activity “bottle of trash challenge”. That means the trash needs to be put in a 600 ml bottle. We decided to challenge ourselves and produce as little trash as possible.
My father worked online all day, so he didn’t produce any paper waste except paper napkins. He made the least trash in our family.
My mother cooked and produced plenty of kitchen waste, such as vegetable leaves, eggshells and food bags. What’s worse, we couldn’t eat up all the food of the dinner that day. So leftovers couldn’t be avoided. It was not easy for mom to deal with all the trash, but she found a way to put it all into the bottle. How amazing!
My sister, a 16-year-old student, was busy preparing for her exams. She had to use paper to work out math or physics problems. She used only one side of the paper in the past. But that day, she tried to use both sides of the paper because she realized we were challenging ourselves. She did a good job!
I was different from my sister. I love snacks and drinks. So my trash was almost from them. I told myself that I must produce less waste. I hardly ever had snacks or drinks. It was too difficult, but I did it!
I’ve learnt a lot from this activity. I realize that everyone can produce less trash. We should start with small actions to protect the earth!

① Balloons can serve not only as a toy, but also as a means of transport. A balloon is a bag filled with air or some other gas. People love to release colorful balloons for special events such as festivals and ceremonies. Colorful balloons may look pretty, but they can bring about some serious problems.
② After balloons are released, they can end up hundreds of kilometers away from where they are released, causing great harm to the environment and wildlife. It is well known that popular helium (氦) balloons can travel up to 800 km before the helium releases and balloons fall to earth. This means they can fly almost everywhere, including waterways, oceans, mountains and farmlands.
③ Well, in our daily life, there are two types of balloons in general use. Most of the balloons we use are latex (乳胶) balloons. In fact, it will take them six months to four years to decompose (分解) and they can cause pollution before they do. The other one is mylar balloons (铝膜气球). They are a kind of plastic balloons which cannot be decomposed and can stay in the environment forever.
④ All of these materials, if littered, can add to the amount of plastic waste in our environment. At the same time, it can result in the injury or death of animals. Balloons may break up into smaller pieces over time. Sea animals, such as whales, turtles and seabirds, often mistake them for food, and if eaten, those small pieces can make them hard to breathe and then cause them to die. Besides, they can also easily get themselves caught together tightly in balloon ribbons (带子). Even worse, it has been found that some birds are collecting balloon pieces, thinking that they’ re food, and even feeding them to their babies.
⑤ All in all, don’t release balloons any more so as to reduce pollution and protect animals. Every small step we take can make the world better, healthier and cleaner.
1.A balloon is filled with ________.
A.colorful water B.latex (乳胶) C.only helium (氦) D.air or some other gas
2.What is the second paragraph mainly about?
A.Helium balloons can fly for a short time.
B.Releasing balloons can produce rubbish.
C.Balloons are very important in our daily life.
D.Balloons can have a bad influence on the environment and wildlife.
3.What’s the biggest difference between mylar balloons and latex balloons?
A.Mylar balloons can’t be decomposed over time.
B.Mylar balloons can be used for the second time.
C.Mylar balloons’ pieces won’t turn into plastic waste.
D.Mylar balloons’ pieces could cause the death of animals.
4.What’s the best structure of the text?
A. B. C. D.
5.The writer writes this text in order to ________.
A.create a new world B.protect the environment

1.文章开篇提出“Have you heard of microplastics (微塑料)? Can we see them in our daily life? Are they good or bad for human beings?” 这几个问题,所以作者是通过提问的方式开始这篇文章的。
2.根据第二段“Microplastics are usually less than five millimeters (毫米) in size. But they bring big problems. This small size lets them go everywhere, even in water and air. They don’t break down easily and can stay in the environment for hundreds of years.”可知微塑料通常小于5毫米且不容易分解。
3.第三段中“Microplastics are very small pieces of plastic. They come from many places.”介绍了微塑料的来源,后面又提到微塑料对人体健康的危害,所以第三段主要介绍了微塑料的来源和危害。
4.根据第四段“Each year, up to three million tons of plastics end up in the ocean. As they break down day by day, they become virtually invisible gradually (逐渐地). Fish may eat them by mistake and become very sick.”

C.It is a new building without any old parts.
D.It has 50 floors while the old one has 45 floors.
3.Which magazine section is this passage probably from?
A.Health and Food. B.Sports and Hobbies.
C.Environment and Society. D.Culture and Education.
4.What is the main idea of the passage?
A.The history and development of Sydney.
B.The new beautiful looks of cities in Sydney, Australia.
C.The differences between old and new buildings in Sydney.
D.The world’s first recycled skyscraper and its advantages.
5.What can we infer (推断) from the passage?

1.What activity did the writer’s family hold on April 22nd?

A.food bags that are used to put the vegetable leaves
B.food that hasn’t been eaten up at the end of a meal
C.waste that is produced in the kitchen
D.dishes that are cooked by mother
4.What was the writer’s sister busy doing?
A.Watching TV. B.Playing computer games.
C.Preparing for her exams. D.Playing the piano.
