In most people, learning and thinking begin to decline(衰退)after the age of 30 or 40. People start to perform worse in tests of thinking abilities. But what if it is only something more like the “summer slide”? Every year, summer vacations lead to some children's study losses.
A group of researchers from the University of California suggest that the break of learning is a problem for adults too.
In a threemonth research project, they provided a learning environment to 33 older adults. They were between 58 and 86 years of age. Before and after the project, the researchers tested their thinking abilities, including attention and working memory. Older adults in this program were asked to have three classes to learn three new skills. Courses included singing, drawing, iPad use, photography, and Spanish language learning. Three months later, people had greatly improved their scores for memory and attention.
In a followup study, the researchers discovered that the participants had not only developed their skills but had improved further. In other words, after having three courses, these older adults seemed to improve their thinking abilities to levels similar to those of college students.
“Use it or lose it,” the saying goes. The project gives us a lesson: decline, as we so often see it, may not be unavoidable.

Everyone knows that sleep is important for our health, but do you know that it can also help us learn a new language? A study found that brain activity during sleep is good for our memories.
In the study, 35 English speakers learnt a language called Mini Pinyin. About half of those people learnt the language in the morning. They stayed awake and had a test later that day. The others learnt in the evening and then went to sleep in a lab. They were tested the next morning. The scientists found that the people who slept after learning remembered much more while the people who just stayed awake remembered less.
When we sleep, our brain goes through different phases. One of these is called REM sleep. It usually first happens about 90 minutes after we fall asleep. During this time, brain activity is very high and we often dream.
Another sleep phase is nonREM sleep. During this time, brain activity is much lower. But our brain sorts and saves new information. This is because of two kinds of brain waves. They can move new information from the shortterm memory part to the longterm memory part.
Scott Cousins worked on the study. “The results shows sleep is important for remembering difficult information, such as a new language. Sleep is not just for us to have a rest. It's also an important time for the brain to change and grow,” he said.
So, if you want to improve your English skills, the key might be to go to bed!
