1.(2020·全国I卷)作者赴费城参会,因忌惮门外骑手仍入场观看流浪狗救助筹款纪录片
The Meredith family lived in a small community. As the economy was in decline, some people in the town had lost their jobs. Many of their families were struggling to make ends meet. People were trying to help each other meet the challenges.
Mrs. Meredith was a most kind and thoughtful woman. She spent a great deal of time visiting the poor. She knew they had problems, and they needed all kinds of help. When she had time, she would bring food and medicine to them.
One morning she told her children about a family she had visited the day before. There was a man sick in bed, his wife, who took care of him and could not go out to work, and their little boy. The little boy -his name was Bernard-had interested her very much.
“I wish you could see him,” she said to her own children, John, Harry, and Clara. “He is such a help to his mother. He wants very much to earn some money, but I don't see what he can do.”
After their mother left the room, the children sat thinking about Bernard. “I wish we could help him to earn money,” said Clara. “His family is suffering so much.”
“So do I,” said Harry. “We really should do something to assist them.”
For some moments, John said nothing, but, suddenly, he sprang to his feet and cried, “I have a great idea! I have a solution that we can all help accomplish(完成).”
The other children also jumped up all attention. When John had an idea, it was sure to be a good one. “I tell you what we can do,” said John. “You know that big box of corn Uncle John sent us? Well, we can make popcorn(爆米花), and put it into paper bags, and Bernard can take it around to the houses and sell it.”

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
It was a sunny late March morning in Alabama. Bennett decided to go kayaking (皮划艇) and fishing on the Elk River before heading home to watch his 4-year-old daughter’s ball game. The weather was pleasant after a week of rain and overflowing rivers. Confident and relaxed, Bennett loaded his kayak with fishing equipment.
The river surface looked calm, but hidden currents ran beneath. Shortly after he pushed off, chaotic water suddenly flipped (打翻) his small kayak. Submerged in the icy, rushing water, Bennett was instantly terrified. His ill-fitting life jacket choked his throat, making it hard to breathe. Struggling desperately, he failed to right the kayak and was gradually carried downstream by the violent current.
Then Bennett remembered: My phone! But when he reached into his pocket, he found that the phone was gone. As he checked his other pocket, his hand brushed against the handgun he always wore when he fished, in case of snakes. Maybe he could signal for help. He fired repeated shots at passing cars on the bridge. Unfortunately, no one stopped. Shivering violently and losing basic body control, Bennett thought he would not survive the cold river.
Just as he was about to give up, John who was camping nearby with his children heard the unusual gunshots. As a disaster-recovery volunteer, John had pulled people out of floods, set bones and rescued puppies. He saw his skills and experiences as a responsibility to help others. With professional rescue experience, he immediately realized someone was in great danger.

Shannon St. Onge was driving back from her office when a snowstorm hit without warning. The roads turned very dangerous with whiteout conditions, making it nearly impossible to see more than a few meters ahead. She later learned that this kind of storm is called a “Saskatchewan screamer,” which comes on extremely fast and brings extremely strong winds. Realizing she could not drive safely, Shannon stopped her car and called 911 for help. The operator told her that rescue workers were already too busy with other calls and advised her to stay in her car, since she had enough gas and was warm. She took down Shannon’s information and promised that an officer would call back soon.
Hours passed, but no one called. Shannon waited nervously in her car as the storm grew worse outside. Almost 14 hours went by, and still nobody had checked on her. She later wrote on Facebook that she began to panic. Her mind filled with scary thoughts: she worried about being hit by another car that could not see her, or getting buried under deep snow. She also feared that snow might block her tailpipe, which could send dangerous gases into her car. The more she thought, the more helpless she felt. Above all, she was deeply afraid that she would never get home to her children, and that thought broke her heart.
Refusing to give up, Shannon decided to take action. She bravely went out into the fierce storm, struggling to find a road sign that could tell her where she was. The wind was so strong that she could hardly stand, but she managed to read the sign and find her location. Then, she took out her phone and found a neighborhood Facebook group for the area she was passing through. She posted a message describing her difficult situation and added a Google Maps pin so that local people could see her exact spot. She hoped someone nearby might see her post and come to help, though she was not sure if anyone would actually show up in such terrible weather.

The Secret of Flowers
Lucy worked with her mother in their vegetable garden every day. The produce from their garden was sold at the farmer’s market. They worked hard to make ends meet. Lucy’s job was to make sure the vegetables were never too dry. Each day Lucy would push her fingers into the soil to test for wetness, and then carefully water the vegetables so they would be healthy and ready for market. Lucy often pretended the plants she tended were roses, like Mrs. White’s prize flowers.
Mrs. White made money by selling flowers and won the first prize at the Rose Festival every year. Other competitors whispered that Mrs. White used magic to grow her roses. How else could she win the first prize twenty years in a row? Lucy admired Mrs. White. If she could sell flowers like her, she would be able to buy things for her mother. But roses were expensive to start, and Lucy could only dream about growing them.
One day, Lucy visited Mrs. White to see her flowers. Mrs. White was inspecting her roses when she arrived. The garden of flowers springing up thrilled Lucy. She greeted warmly, “Mrs. White, I come to see your flowers. I wish I could grow beautiful roses and win a prize at the festival like you.” “Child, do you know what’s required to grow such flowers? The secret of growing prize roses has been passed down to me from past generations of my family.” Mrs. White laughed. Noticing the sad look on Lucy’s face, Mrs. White pulled up what looked like a weed. “What’s that?” Lucy asked. “A shabby plant. Unworthy of my time — too weak to bother with. If you can turn it into a strong and healthy rose, I’ll pass on what I know to you.” Mrs. White said before handing the small plant to Lucy.

5.(2026高三上·山东·专题练习)卡尔雨天独自驾皮艇钓鱼遇险
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
One late March morning, Cal, a store worker, planned a fishing trip to the Elk River. Strong rain had caused the river to fill up, its current becoming fast and powerful. He forgot to bring the parts to keep his 10-foot kayak (皮艇) balanced, but thought it would be fine.
Tall and heavy, Cal eased into the boat, started the motor, and headed across. Midway, rough waves overturned the kayak. One moment he was upright; the next, he was in the icy water, struggling to breathe.
His life belt rode up around his throat, choking him. Heavy boots dragged him down. The fast current swept him farther from the boat, and there was no way to reach the bank. Just then, he spotted a thick branch hanging low over the water from a partially underwater tree. Reaching out with all his might, he grabbed it. The tree was firmly rooted — solid and steady, holding him against the current. Numb (麻木的) fingers found the whistle (口哨) on his fishing coat. He blew it with his last strength, praying someone would hear. The icy water was numbing his fingers, and his legs had given out. All he could think of was his wife Maria and their daughter Della.
That morning, Johnny, a former soldier and lifeguard, had driven to the river with his four kids. He often kept a thick rope in his car trunk for outdoor activities. He parked on the bank nearby. As he stepped out, sharp whistles cut through the air. Running toward the sound, he shouted, “Hello? Are you okay?” A weak, trembling voice came back: “Not… good.” A warning bell went off in his mind — someone was in trouble. He sprinted (冲刺) to his car, grabbed the thick rope, and ran toward the voice.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
On spotting Cal in the water, Johnny instantly secured one end of the rope to the car trunk.

【答案】
Without hesitation, John rushed toward the riverbank. Spotting Bennett struggling in the roaring current, John threw off his camping coat, his children watching anxiously from the bank. It was his rich rescue experience that made him stay calm despite the threatening situation. With the cold water biting his skin, he dived into the river, where rapid waves kept sweeping Bennett away. So strong was the current that John had enormous difficulty getting close to the drowning man. Grasping Bennett’s arm tightly, he fought against the rushing water, every muscle burning with great tiredness.
After what felt like ages, he finally pulled Bennett onto dry land. Shaken and exhausted, Bennett lay on the ground, his body trembling non-stop. What John did was perform first aid, which helped Bennett regain his breath. It was not long before Bennett calmed down, realizing how lucky he was to survive. With gratitude filling his heart, Bennett thanked John repeatedly. Had John not heard the gunshots and come to his rescue, Bennett would have lost his life, missing his daughter’s ball game forever.

【答案】
Shannon’s message soon reached Andre, a 70-year-old retired man nearby. He didn’t hesitate. He put on his thickest coat, picked up a shovel and a flashlight, and walked into the screaming wind. Every step was a fight against the thick, blinding snow, but he thought of Shannon — a mother stuck in her car, terrified. After nearly an hour, he found her car, tapped on the window, and shouted, “Follow me, dear. My house is just ahead.” Shannon cried with relief, walking behind his strong, steady figure as he cleared a path with his shovel.
When they reached Andre’s home, his wife had hot soup and clothes waiting. Shannon hugged Andre, unable to find words for her gratitude. The next morning, before leaving, Shannon looked at the 70-year-old man who walked through a dangerous snowstorm to rescue her. She realized that true courage isn’t about being young or strong — it’s about choosing to care when no one else will. Before she left, she asked Andre why he had risked his life for a stranger. He smiled and said, “Because that’s what neighbors do.” Those five words stayed with Shannon, reminding her that even in the darkest storm, the light of human kindness never goes out.

【答案】Possible version
Lucy took the shabby plant home. She transplanted it carefully into a pot. Every day she would push her fingers into the soil to test for moisture and water the little plant. She would talk lovingly to her plant while tending to all its needs. With time flying by, the plant looked stronger and taller. Mrs. White’s mouth dropped open at the sight of the thriving plant displayed by Lucy. She taught Lucy the details of growing prize roses as she had promised. Under Mrs. White’s instruction, the plant was in full blossom. They were the most beautiful roses Lucy had ever seen.
Lucy attended the Rose Festival after being instructed by Mrs. White. Lucy’s roses won the first prize and the prize money was used to buy young rose plants for her own garden and useful tools for her mother. She was also grateful to Mrs. White. If Mrs. White hadn’t given her the plant or instructed her in the skills, she wouldn’t have had the chance to grow the wonderful roses. Thinking of the many times she had carefully weeded, watered and cared for the flowers, Lucy realized the real secret of flowers and life was helping others and being able to do something she enjoyed.

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________【答案】One possible version:
On spotting Cal in the water, Johnny instantly secured one end of the rope to the car trunk. Then he swung the rope over the low branch, and dropped it exactly beside Cal’s shoulder. “Pull it under your arms and hold tight!” he yelled. Cal reached out his cold hand for the rope. He failed to catch it at first, but he tried once more and got it. Quickly he secured it under his arms. Johnny planted his feet firmly against a large rock, leaned back with his full weight, and pulled hard. The rope bit into his palms, but he kept pulling, feeling the current yield inch by inch.
Within reach, Johnny stepped forward, grabbed his collar, and dragged him ashore. He wrapped his coat around Cal. His daughter ran up with a towel. Cal coughed, tears mixing with water. “My family…” he murmured weakly. Johnny gripped his arm firmly and said, “Stay awake for them.” Minutes later, the alarm bell echoed. Medical workers arrived. They checked Cal. As they helped him into the ambulance, he turned to Johnny, voice weak but clear. “I can’t thank you enough. You saved my life.” Johnny gave a nod. “Glad you’re okay. Go home to your family. That’s all that matters.”
