The library called the program march miles a way to forgive people who lost their damaged borrowed items by accident. Jason homer, the executive director of the library, said in an interview on monday that about four hundred people had their library accounts on blot and could borrow books again after bringing in their pictures or drawings of cats. In one case, a cats seven year old boy who lost the book kept in under pants had his library card work again after the staff gave him paper and a pencil to drop a cat. Like many public libraries in the united states, the worst or public library is trying to encourage people to return there after the pandemic. The library had previously tried to raise the number of visitors with canned food drives. The library staff held meetings for several months to come up with different creative ways to get people back through the library doors. After these meetings, the miles program took shape. While the library had previously stopped charging fines for late returns, many people who faced fees for lost items simply stayed away. One woman named Julie, who had lost library DVD by accident, regained access to her account with a photograph of a cat. Three Free Movie Websites for Your In-Home Movie Night
It’s no secret that paid TV services are expensive and often come with many unnecessary extra charges. There are plenty of free movie websites for you to access that will replace those paid services, so there’s no need to stress about missing out on your favorite or must-see movies at a high cost.
Website’s name
Profile
Popcornflix
Popcornflix features a smooth, easy-to-use interface (界面), and you don’t have to create an account. Families will also like PopcornflixKids, a children’s section on Popcornflix. However, you can only choose from 52 options for comedy specials, and 12 of them are actually old Gallagher routines. Plus, you’ll have to watch advertisements every 15 minutes, and the video quality is somewhat poor.
Facebook Watch
Facebook Watch often winds up being a mix of random videos, but you can find some novel treasures. Like YouTube, users and brands of Facebook Watch can create and upload their own videos. It also hosts some original shows. Therefore, don’t expect to find any full-length movies on here. You will need a Facebook account to view these shows.
Tubi
Tubi features over 12,000 movies and TV shows to watch. It’s also relatively easy to explore niche topics (小众话题), such as “Full Moon Features”. Tubi makes profits by showing advertisements throughout the movies. While there are plenty of movies to watch, don’t expect to find a ton of newer, high-dollar productions.
Note: You are expected to take each free site’s pros and cons into account and then you can pick one according to your own needs.
21.What might be a disadvantage of Popcornflix?
A.It ignores kids’ needs. B.It requires registration.
C.It advertises regularly. D.It freezes occasionally.
22.What is special about Facebook Watch?
A.It charges extra fees. B.It features novelty.
C.It targets video games. D.It keeps most users and brands.
23.What do the three movie websites have in common?
A.They have various content choices. B.They possess colorful interfaces.
C.They feature the same video topics. D.They have videos of high quality.

Sonya Smithart, a legally blind woman from West Columbia, sat near her TV with a notebook and pencil, watching Quilt (缝被子) in a Day. She wrote the host’s instructions in large letters. After years of wanting to learn, she finally said, “I’m going to teach myself to quilt.”
Growing up on a small farm in the early 1950s, Sonya loved watching her mom gather around a home-made quilting frame. “Will you show me how?” Sonya asked, but schoolwork and odd jobs kept her busy. Shortly after high school, she married, started a family and worked long hours as a short-order cook to help make ends meet.
In 1989, a friend gave Sonya’s husband, Buddy, an old quilt. “I’ll start by fixing this,” Sonya thought after watching Quilt in a Day, and she took apart the quilt and put it back together using cloth strips (布条). “It’s as good as new!” Buddy said in surprise, and Sonya felt she was ready to make a quilt all by herself.
Over the next several years, she made quilts for her 3 children and 6 grandchildren. But her mission quickly expanded. Her uncle (Carlisle) in India cared for 25 orphaned (孤儿) children who slept on boards. Sonya’s heart went out to them, and so did her quilts. It took three months, but she completed 25 quilts for the children — and their note of thanks brought tears. “This is the reason I learned to quilt,” she realized.
In 36 years, Sonya has made and donated more than 3,000 quilts to a local hospital, Ronald McDonald House and child residential centers. Two of her children have also carried her quilts on trips across South America. Foreign exchange students have taken them home to England, Scotland and Sweden.
Now 86, Sonya still spends four hours a day making quilts for hurricane victims in North Carolina and children displaced by floods in Virginia. Two of her children helped deliver her quilts.
24.Why did Sonya fail to learn quilting from her mom when she was young?
A.She was not interested in quilting then.
B.She had to help support her family early.
C.She was occupied with her studies and housework.
D.She couldn’t do needlework due to her poor eyesight.
25.What did Sonya do when she first tried to learn quilting?
A.She sewed a quilt for her own children.
B.She fixed a worn-out quilt with cloth strips.
C.She took a quilting class in her community.
D.She sent quilts to orphans in another country.
26.What can be inferred about Sonya from her work for orphaned children?
A.She preferred working for foreign children.
B.She hoped to gain international recognition.
C.She saw quilting as a powerful way to show her care.
D.She believed small efforts could solve global poverty.
27.What does the last paragraph suggest about Sonya?
A.She has taught her children to make quilts.
B.She has retired from quilting due to old age.
C.She has decided to move closer to her children.
D.She continues her charitable work despite her age.

Start reading recent internet conversations about AI, and you’ll find a topic that surfaces with increasing frequency: ChatGPT delivered lifesaving medical advice.
“Three weeks ago I woke up from a nap and found some red spots all over my legs,” begins one such account in a video from Bethany Crystal, who lives in New York. After an exchange with ChatGPT, it told her, “You need immediate evaluation for possible bleeding risk.” “What followed was a terrible three-day experience that got increasingly scary,” says Crystal, who was eventually diagnosed with a rare autoimmune disorder. She says she may not have gone to the emergency room in time if ChatGPT had not been insistent.
Hundreds of millions of people now consult ChatGPT weekly for wellness advice, according to its maker, OpenAI. In early January, the company announced the launch of a new platform, ChatGPT Health, which it says offers enhanced security for sharing medical records and data. It joins other AI tools such as My Doctor Friend in promising to partner with patients on navigating health care.
Many patients describe using different AI platforms to help with daily management of health as a complement (补充) to advice from medical professionals. Sixty-year-old Burt Rosen uses AI to help manage symptoms and treatment for the cancer he’s been diagnosed with. He frequently shows AI test results and asks it to translate them into comprehensible English. Rosen says AI has changed the relationship he has with his doctor. “When I go into a doctor’s appointment, I no longer need him to explain much to me,” he says. “My doctor’s appointment is much more of an action-planning session.”
Of course, AI is not a replacement for a doctor. Doctors say that without clinical oversight (监督), misdiagnosis, misleading advice, or human misunderstanding are significant problems. Despite these hazards, they are optimistic about the contributions AI can make to health care and believes the benefits will eventually outweigh the dangers, if they don’t already.
28.What does Bethany Crystal’s case in paragraph 2 indicate?
A.The popularity of ChatGPT. B.The significance of regular checkups.
C.The lack of medical knowledge. D.The value of AI-aided medical diagnosis.
29.What do we know about ChatGPT Health?
A.Its users’ privacy is better protected. B.It provides better health care than doctors.
C.It has 100 million registered users. D.It is used as a tool by My Doctor Friend.
30.What impact has AI brought to Rosen?
A.It improves the cure rate for his disease.
B.It reduces his trust in medical personnel.
C.It offers him real-time translation at the doctor’s.
D.It changes the way he communicates with his doctor.
31.What does the underlined word “hazards” in paragraph 5 mean?
A.Virtues. B.Risks. C.Signs. D.Reminders.
D
Cooking is a unique cultural phenomenon at the core of human creative efforts. Recipes, flavour, nutrition, and health form the pieces of the food puzzle. In the last decade, computer-based food science has developed as a powerful data science aided by structured collections of cooking databases, field-specific algorithms (算法), and applications.
For instance, RecipeDB, a structured collection of recipes from global cuisines and underlying algorithms that can identify culinary (烹饪的) elements, is ripe for exploration. This organized database can help estimate the nutritional value of dishes, among other things. Similarly, FlavorDB represents the taste and smell correlates (相关的事物) of food ingredients, recording the reasons behind their use in cooking. Data from studies on the health effects of food and estimated carbon footprints of recipes highlight important health and environmental impacts, crucial for public health and sustainability.
Attempts have been made to develop recipe generation algorithms via text generation and LLMs, like Ratatouille, powered by 118,000 global structured recipes and advanced named entity (实体) recognition. Yet it is harder to evaluate computer-generated recipes than LLM-written poetry, paintings or music. The “Turing Test for Chefs” has experts rate recipes — both traditional and AI-generated — on a scale from 0 (AI-made) to 5 (human-made). Delhi hotel management final-year students tested Ratatouille, with LLM models achieving 69.88% F1-score success. The algorithm behind it provided detailed instructions on ingredients and quantities, pre-processing steps, cooking steps, and the appropriate cookers and methods.
Novel recipe-generation strategies have the potential to create tasty and nutritious dishes with public health consequences. When combined with appropriate data, these can also generate personalised, cost-effective, and environmentally sustainable recipes. However, taste will remain a crucial factor in the acceptance of AI-generated recipes. Therefore, the skill and creativity of chefs will be essential to make sense of the output of AI. More and more cooking-related data is available now, and cooking involves complex senses. AI will help boost people’s creativity, but it can never take people’s place.
32.What do RecipeDB and FlavorDB have in common?
A.They focus on health effects. B.They teach cooking methods.
C.They clarify the cooking logic. D.They analyse food interactions.
33.What do we know about Ratatouille?
A.It resolved taste-related issues. B.It offered standardized operations.
C.It skipped pre-processing steps. D.It outperformed professional chefs.
34.Why is AI unlikely to replace chefs?
A.It lacks consideration of taste. B.It misses enough culinary data.
C.It creates dishes without novelty. D.It misinterprets customers’ needs.
35.What is a suitable title for the text?
A.Judges of AI Recipes B.Keys to Tasty Dishes
C.“Rulers” of the Cooking Area D.A New “Cook” in Our Kitchen

We often hear students say, “Grades don’t matter that much in the long run.” 36 A recent study suggests high school grades play a far more important role in our adult lives than we used to think.
The study, carried out by researchers at the University of California, followed thousands of students for over 20 years. 37 For every half-point improvement in high school GPA (Grade Point Average), the average person’s earnings rose by 8% in their late 30s. The effect is even greater for students from poor families.
Many people once believed only college degrees influenced future income. 38 It shows that good high school grades themselves create valuable life skills, such as self-discipline and time management. These skills prepare people for success whether they go to college or not.
39 They greatly narrow the income difference between poor and wealthy students. The earnings gap between a low-income student with outstanding grades and a middle-class student with ordinary grades can almost be closed. In this way, hard work in high school creates a more equal chance for success.
Grades also bring other forms of success. They are more likely to get leadership positions at work and continue their education later in life. All these prove that high school grades are more than just numbers on a report card. 40
A.But this study tells a different story.
B.This opinion might be far from the truth.
C.They mainly help students get into good colleges.
D.High grades also help reduce unfairness in society.
E.It discovered a clear link between grades and future earnings.
F.Thus, valuing high school grades truly pays off in the long run.
G.Students with good grades usually enjoy better health in their later life.

On Wednesday night, it was the closing time of the mall. But there was an hour’s work, at least, to get everything cleaned up. It would be 11:00 p.m. before I finally got home. I hadn’t even had time to have dinner. I was starving. My feet ached. My whole body was filled with tiredness. I couldn’t wait to go to bed. But it would be only 6 hours before the alarm went off at 5:00 a.m. for my day job.
Things had been tight for over a year now. My husband Paul’s business had taken a huge hit. I had a full-time job at a day care center and somehow did my homework for my college class too. Then I had to work nights at the mall. Without me taking my second job, there wouldn’t be enough money to pay the bills. Let alone buy any Christmas presents for our 15-year-old daughter, Marie. No one wanted to wake up on Christmas morning to an empty tree.
I barely even saw Paul and Marie; any girl still needs her mom. I worried about her more. Marie was growing up, but as a teenager, was she eating enough? Keeping up with her schoolwork? I wasn’t afraid of sacrifices. Everyone had to work hard for the family. I knew I was blessed to have two jobs, when millions of people couldn’t find one.
How I hoped to quit my job at the day care center and obtain a full-time degree! I’d dropped down to one class a term. If I quit that, there was no way I’d find the willpower to try again. Besides, wasn’t I always telling Marie to keep hoping and never give up?
My mind went back to the conversation I’d had with Marie earlier. Paul had dropped her off at the mall, where she was getting picked up for a babysitting job. “Remember we’re going Christmas shopping this night,” she said. “Now I’ll even have my own money. See you later.”
The floor was nearly done. The boss asked me to leave.
I opened the back door of the mall and saw Marie outside with a bag of food, smiling.

W: The Worcester Public Library announced that through the end of March, people who have lost or damaged a book or other borrowed items can bring a photograph, drawing or magazine clipping of a cat, and make their library cards work again without paying fines. The library called the program March Meowness, a way to forgive people who lost or damaged borrowed items by accident. Jason Homer, the executive director of the library, said in an interview on Monday that about 400 people had their library accounts unblocked and could borrow books again after bringing in their pictures or drawings of cats. In one case, a cat-less 7-year-old boy, who lost the book Captain Underpants, had his library card work again after the staff gave him paper and a pencil to draw a cat.
Like many public libraries in the United States, the Worcester Public Library is trying to encourage people to return there after the pandemic. The library had previously tried to raise the number of visitors with canned food drives. The library staff held meetings for several months to come up with different creative ways to get people back through the library doors. After these meetings, the Meowness program took shape. While the library had previously stopped charging fines for late returns, many people who faced fees for lost items simply stayed away. One woman named Julie, who had lost library DVDs by accident, regained access to her account with a photograph of a cat.

根据Facebook Watch介绍中“Facebook Watch often winds up being a mix of random videos, but you can find some novel treasures. (Facebook Watch上的内容通常是各类随机视频的混合体,但你能发现一些新奇的宝藏。)”以及“It also hosts some original shows. (它还推出了一些原创节目。)”可知,该网站的特色是能找到新颖、特别的内容。

根据第二段““Will you show me how?” Sonya asked, but schoolwork and odd jobs kept her busy. (Sonya问“你能教我吗?”但学业和杂务让她无暇分身。)”可知,Sonya年少时未能跟妈妈学缝被子,是因为学业和各种零散事务占用了她的时间,即她忙于学习和杂务。
25.细节理解题。根据第三段““'I'll start by fixing this,” Sonya thought after watching Quilt in a Day, and she took apart the quilt and put it back together using cloth strips (布条). (“我先从修补这个开始,”Sonya看完节目后想,她把被子拆开,用布条重新拼接在一起。)”可知,Sonya初次尝试学缝被子时,是用布条修补了一床旧被子。
26.推理判断题。根据第四段“Sonya's heart went out to them, and so did her quilts. It took three months, but she completed 25 quilts for the children — and their note of thanks brought tears. “This is the reason I learned to quilt, ” she realized. (Sonya对孩子们充满同情,她的被子也随之送到了他们手中。她花了三个月,为孩子们完成了25条被子——孩子们的感谢信让她热泪盈眶。“这就是我学缝被子的原因,”她意识到。)”可推知,Sonya将缝被子视为表达关爱的有力方式。
27.推理判断题。根据最后一段“Now 86, Sonya still spends four hours a day making quilts for hurricane victims in North Carolina and children displaced by floods in Virginia. (如今86岁的Sonya,每天仍花四小时为北卡罗来纳州的飓风灾民和弗吉尼亚州因洪水流离失所的孩子制作被子。)”可知,尽管年事已高,Sonya仍在坚持做慈善。

根据第二段“After an exchange with ChatGPT, it told her, “You need immediate evaluation for possible bleeding risk.” “What followed was a terrible three day experience that got increasingly scary,” says Crystal, who was eventually diagnosed with a rare autoimmune disorder. She says she may not have gone to the emergency room in time if ChatGPT had not been insistent.
根据第三段“In early January, the company announced the launch of a new platform, ChatGPT Health, which it says offers enhanced security for sharing medical records and data. (1月初,该公司宣布推出一个新平台ChatGPT Health,称其为共享医疗记录和数据提供了增强的安全性)”可知,ChatGPT Health平台为用户分享的病例和数据提供了更高的安全性,即能够更好保护用户的隐私。

【答案】32.C 33.B 34.A 35.D
根据第二段“For instance, RecipeDB, a structured collection of recipes from global cuisines and underlying algorithms that can identify culinary (烹饪的) elements, is ripe for exploration. This organized database can help estimate the nutritional value of dishes, among other things. Similarly, FlavorDB represents the taste and smell correlates (相关的事物) of food ingredients, recording the reasons behind their use in cooking.(例如,食谱数据库(RecipeDB)汇集了世界各地菜系的结构化食谱,底层算法能够识别各类烹饪要素,拥有广阔的研究探索空间。这套结构化数据库除其他用途外,还可用于估算菜品的营养价值。与之类似,风味数据库(FlavorDB)呈现各类食材的味觉与嗅觉相关事物,记录食材用于烹饪背后的原理。)”可知,RecipeDB和Flavor DB的共同点是都阐明了烹饪逻辑。
33.细节理解题。根据第三段“The algorithm behind it provided detailed instructions on ingredients and quantities, pre-processing steps, cooking steps, and the appropriate cookers and methods.(其底层算法能够输出详尽信息,涵盖食材与用量、预处理工序、烹饪步骤以及适配的厨具和烹饪方式。)”
根据最后一段“However, taste will remain a crucial factor in the acceptance of AI-generated recipes.(不过,口味依旧是人工智能生成食谱能否被大众接受的关键因素。)”
通读全文,尤其是第一段“In the last decade, computer-based food science has developed as a powerful data science aided by structured collections of cooking databases, field-specific algorithms (算法), and applications.(过去十年间,依托结构化烹饪数据库、专用算法以及各类应用程序,计算机食品科学发展成为一门实力强劲的数据科学。)”和最后一段“More and more cooking-related data is available now, and cooking involves complex senses. AI will help boost people’s creativity, but it can never take people’s place.(如今,越来越多与烹饪相关的数据可供使用,而烹饪涉及复杂的感官体验。人工智能将有助于激发人们的创造力,但永远无法取代人类的角色。)”可知,本文主要讲的是AI食谱技术的发展、优势,同时指出它的局限,说明 AI 不能取代人类厨师,因此最恰当的标题是D选项“A New “Cook” in Our Kitchen(我们厨房里的新“厨师”)”。

The Hidden Power of High School Grades

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
I pulled her tight against me.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
I opened the back door of the mall and saw Marie outside with a bag of food, smiling. She finished her job an hour before. She figured I didn’t have time for dinner, so she bought me a bag of food with her own money earned by babysitting and waited for me outside the mall all the time. While I was eating, she told me that I was her hero and she admired everything I was doing for the family. When she was babysitting long hours or when she was tired of doing homework, she thought about my hard work. She remembered to have hope for life and never give up.
I pulled her tight against me. Tomorrow the alarm would still ring at 5:00 a.m. The bills would still be waiting. There would be more rough days ahead. And yet I was ready to face them together with Paul and Marie, all of us willing to work hard and make sacrifices and holding on to each other. Things would get better with the love of a good family.
