For example, scientists have insisted for years that a big enemy of health is fatty food. However, there is increasing evidence that the real driver of poor health is not so much fatty food, as it is sugar. Heart disease is the number one killer of Americans. And in America, people who receive 25% of their daily calories or more through sugar are twice as likely to die from heart disease than people who receive less than 10% a day. This is true regardless of how healthy the rest of their diet might be. Put more simply, while people continue to argue over whether or not fatty food is dangerous, we already know that sugar is a killer. Much of this extra sugar comes from sweets and sweet drinks. The average American gets 1/3 of his or her sugar through sweet drinks alone. The American Heart Association recommends that we limit ourselves to less than 100150 calories a day from sugar, which is less than what is usually contained in one can of sweet drink or in a single candy bar. In other words, if you want to be healthy, you have to cut down on desserts, and cut out sweet drinks altogether. Beyond this, you can keep healthy by consuming different categories of fresh foods, especially fruit and vegetables, which are full of vitamins and fibre, rather than processed foods. Processed foods often contain less nutrition, and have higher quantities of sugar, salt, and fat than fresh ingredients. Besides this, it is also important to have some meat, beans, or dairy products in your diet, as they provide the necessary protein for strong bones and muscle growth. As with everything in life, moderation is key. The ideal diet is a balanced one, without too much or too little of any one thing. 1.What do we know about fatty food from paragraph 1? A.Fatty food is even more dangerous than sugar and other nutrients. B.People taking in too much fatty food have a higher risk of getting heart disease. C.Taking too much fatty food displays no influences on health. D.Whether fatty food is dangerous or not is still highly debatable. 2.What is the main cause of ill health? A.Taking too much sugar. B.Eating too much fat. C.Having too many calories. D.Taking less exercise. 3.In which way do people mainly take in extra sugar? A.By eating extra desserts. B.By overeating each meal. C.Through vegetables and sweets. D.Through sweets and sweet drinks. 4.According to paragraph 3, which of the following is NOT a healthy habit? A.Consuming different kinds of fresh foods instead of processed foods. B.Keeping a balance on different nutrients from the foods. C.Processed foods containing diverse nutrients are also acceptable. D.Having some proteinrich foods like meat, beans or dairy products. 答案:1~4.DADC Ⅰ.阅读理解 A If you are a bean, nut, and seed lover, nutritionists say that you are on a good diet as these are some of the healthiest foods. Locally, nutritionists say these are very much affordable sources of protein, fibre, iron, and vitamins that offer many health benefits. Gerald Ruzindana, a nutrition and wellness expert, says protein is a vital nutrient that plays a key role in maintaining and repairing the body, and legumes (豆科植物) are high in amino acids (氨基酸), the building blocks of protein. He says that people should consider consuming legumes on a daily basis. “With their presence of proteins, consuming legumes helps heal and make new tissues in the body,” he says. Legumes are also linked to significantly lower risks of heart disease, high blood pressure according to studies. “It's surprising how many people still don't understand the benefits that come with consuming legumes,” says Erick Musengimana, a nutritionist at Rwanda Diabetes Association. He adds that legumes provide fibre, protein, carbohydrate, B vitamins, and because they are plant foods, they are cholesterolfree as well, which makes them a perfect option. From studies, one serving of legumes, which is onehalf cup, provides about 115 calories, 20g of carbohydrate, 79g of fibre, 8g of protein, and 1g of fat. It has also been established that legumes are an essential part of many healthy eating patterns, including the Mediterranean style of eating and vegetarian. Along with being a highly nutritious food, evidence shows that legumes can play an important role in the prevention and management of a number of health conditions. Also, nutritionists say that a diet that regularly includes legumes may help with weight control, because of its fibre content and protein, as this means that it will slowly get digested after consumption, therefore, aiding in satiety. 【解题导语】 本文是一篇说明文。文章介绍了豆类对人们身体健康的益处。 1.According to the passage, what is an important nutrient that sustains and restores the body? Jaramillo's students live in neighborhoods where fresh food and green space are not easy to find and fast food restaurants outnumber grocery stores.“The kids literally come to school with bags of snacks and large bottles of soft drinks,” she says.“They come to us thinking vegetables are awful, dirt is awful, and insects are awful.” Though some are initially scared of the insects and turned off by the dirt, most are eager to try something new. Urban Sprouts' classes, at two middle schools and two high schools, include handson experiments such as soil testing, flowerandseed dissection, tastings of fresh or dried produce, and working in the garden.Several times a year, students cook the vegetables they grow, and they occasionally make salads for their entire schools. Program evaluations show that kids eat more vegetables as a result of the classes.“We have students who say they went home and talked to their parents and now they're eating differently,” Jaramillo says. She adds that the program's benefits go beyond nutrition. Some students get so interested in gardening that they bring home seeds to start their own vegetable gardens.Besides, working in the garden seems to have a calming effect on Jaramillo's special education students, many of whom have emotional control issues.“They get outside,” she says, “and they feel successful.” 【解题导语】 本文是一篇记叙文。文章讲述了在低收入学校发起的培养学生科学能力、环保意识以及健康生活方式的菜园项目,旨在让学生种植蔬菜,对学生影响深远的故事。 5.What do we know about Abby Jaramillo? You may have noticed some items labelled with the word “organic”.1.________ “Organic” refers to the way food is grown. To be labelled as organic, food production must meet strict guidelines. These can be different depending on where you live. In the United States, organic foods must be grown or raised without using pesticides or chemical fertilizers. 2.________ That changed after the Industrial Revolution. During the 20th century, many ideas that were used by factories and big businesses were put into action on farms. This helped some farms grow larger and produce more. The organic movement was started to get back to the old traditional ways of farming. Why? Many believe the chemicals and pesticides used in modern farming can be harmful to your health. 3.________ And those who support the organic movement also point to its benefits for the environment. Have you ever compared organic and nonorganic food at the grocery store? If so, you know that organic food tends to cost more. This happens for many reasons. Organic farming produces fewer crops. 4.________ Additionally, organic farms spend more money taking care of the animals they raise. These and other factors drive the cost of organic food up. Is organic food worth the extra cost? Some people believe it is. They may think it tastes better or just prefer to eat food that has not been grown using chemicals. 5.________ They are still trying to find a major difference between organic and nonorganic food in terms of safety, nutrition, or taste. Still, others argue that the environmental benefits of organic food make it worth the price. A.Have you ever wondered what that means? B.The cost of production is also usually higher.
