Perce Blackborow joined an expedition with Sir Ernest Shackleton to Antarctica on the ship Endurance in 1914. Shackleton was one of the most famous explorers of his day and it was considered a great honour to be part of his expeditions. Below are some of Blackborow's diary entries.
31 Oct, 1914
...Well, it so happened that one morning I bought a newspaper and read the advertisement about the Antarctic expedition.
An expedition to the South Pole with the great Sir Ernest Shackleton—this is the adventure that I have been dreaming of. And I was ready for it. At the age of 19, I am fit and full of vigour. However, when I applied to join the expedition, Shackleton turned me down because he thought I was too young and wasn't qualified. But I was so enthusiastic about the idea of going along with them that I secretly went aboard his ship, the Endurance, and hid in a small cupboard. Unfortunately, three days after we set off I was discovered. Shackleton did not want to turn back so he offered me a job, but only after he promised me, “If anyone has to be eaten, then you will be the first!” He assigned me to be a steward, and I now serve meals for twenty-eight men, three times a day.
How everyone will envy me when I come back and tell them about the amazing places I have been to!
21 Nov, 1915
The journey has not been easy.Endurance became stuck in the ice as we approached Antarctica. The ice froze around us and we were well and truly stuck! We saw the ship get crushed by the ice. And when the ship sank, our hearts sank with it.
Before we abandoned the ship, Shackleton calmly called us together and told us to rescue our most essential supplies—the small boats, our food, the cook stove, candles, clothes, and blankets. This was no time to panic. We were not allowed to take most of our personal belongings, and Shackleton himself threw away all his gold. But to our surprise, he allowed Hussey to keep his banjo. Hussey often plays it to keep our spirits up.
We are now camped on the ice and we have been managing to survive, but spring is coming, and the ice will soon begin to melt.
1.Why did Shackleton refuse Blackborow's application?
A.Because he was too young.
B.Because he wasn't ready for it.
C.Because he was not enthusiastic about it.
D.Because he was not full of vigour.
2.How did Blackborow feel when Shackleton approved of his staying on the ship?
A.Disappointed. B.Amazed.
C.Proud. D.Energetic.
3.What happened to the ship?

C.It was out of oil.

(2026·成都高二期中)Florence Nightingale is widely regarded as the founder of modern nursing. Born into a wealthy upper-class British family, Nightingale was provided with a comprehensive education that included mathematics and languages. However, despite her family's expectations that she would focus on traditional female pursuits like marriage and motherhood, Nightingale felt drawn to a career in nursing from a young age.
Nightingale was deeply moved by the pains of the sick and injured, particularly during the Crimean War (1853-1856). At a time when nursing was not considered a respectable profession for women of her class, she decided to pursue her calling. She faced significant opposition from her family, who believed that nursing was beneath her social status, and she also received a lot of criticism from society at large. Nevertheless, she persevered, driven by her strong sense of compassion and determination.
In 1854, Nightingale and a team of 38 nurses traveled to the Crimean War front, where conditions in the military hospitals were awful. She immediately set about improving hygiene and sanitation (公共卫生), organizing nursing care, and calling for better treatment of the wounded soldiers. Her tireless efforts and compassionate nursing earned her the nickname “The Lady with the Lamp”, as she was often seen making rounds at night, carrying a lamp to check on the soldiers.
Her work significantly reduced the death rate among the wounded soldiers and brought much-needed attention to the terrible conditions of military hospitals. Her actions led to reforms in military healthcare and established the importance of proper nursing care in the treatment of the sick and injured.
After the war, Nightingale returned to England as a national hero. She used her newfound fame to continue calling for improved healthcare and nursing standards. She published several influential works, including “Notes on Nursing” and “Notes on Hospitals”, which became seminal (影响深远的)texts in the field of nursing.
All in all, her efforts were truly worthwhile. Her legacy continues to inspire and guide the nursing profession and healthcare reform to this day.

(2026·深圳高二期中)Just being smart doesn't guarantee someone will be successful. And just being less smart doesn't mean that the person will fail. That's one take-home message from the work of people like Angela Duckworth.
She works at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. Like many other researchers, Duckworth wondered what makes one person more successful than another. When digging deeper, Duckworth found that the people who performed best shared a quality(品质) independent of intelligence. They had what she now calls perseverance. Duckworth developed a set of questions to test it.
In one study of people aged 25 and above, she found that as people age, they become more likely to stick with a project. She also found that perseverance increases with education. People who had finished college scored higher in the perseverance test than people who quit before graduation did. People who went to graduate school after college scored even higher.
She then did another study with college students. Duckworth wanted to see how intelligence and perseverance influenced performance in school. So she compared scores on college-entrance exams, which test IQ, to school grades and someone's score in the perseverance test. Students with higher grades seem to have more perseverance. That's not surprising. Getting good grades takes both intelligence and hard work.
But some people counter that perseverance means success. Among those people is Marcus Credé, a teacher at Iowa State University in Ames. He recently showed the results of 88 studies on perseverance. Together, nearly 67,000 people took part in these studies. And perseverance did not predict success, Credé found.
Nevertheless, he thinks perseverance is very similar to someone's ability to set goals, work toward them and think things through before acting. It's a basic personality quality, Credé notes—not something that can be changed.
“Study habits and skills, test anxiety and class attendance are far more strongly connected with school grades than perseverance,” Credé says. “We can teach students how to study well. We can help them with their test anxiety,” he adds. “I'm not sure we can do that with perseverance.”
