TEXT 1 Mr Bean
[1]Mr Bean is an internationally recognised comedy character in
films and TV series. He has a reputation for① constantly encountering
awkward situations②, which greatly amuses audiences③ of all
nationalities and cultures.[2]His humour is always made clear④
through a series of⑤ simple and funny acts that rely purely on⑥ body
language⑦ that is universal.
One of my favourite episodes was Mr Bean in a fancy
restaurant. After being seated⑧ at his table, Mr Bean takes out⑨ a
card, writes a few words on it, puts it in an envelope and places it on
the table.[3]After a moment⑩, he looks back at the envelope but
this time he looks surprised⑪, as if he did not know it was there. He
opens it to find a birthday card and very happily puts it on the table for
everyone to see.
When he looks at the menu, an astonished look⑫ quickly appears
on his face.He takes all the money out of his wallet, counts it and puts
it in a saucer. He then looks from the menu to the money with concern⑬
until he finds one thing that makes him smile. Then he orders a dish
called “steak tartare”.When the dish arrives, he is shocked to⑭
discover that “steak tartare” is actually raw hamburger.[4]He
makes an attempt⑮ to eat it, but it is clear from the look on his face as
he is chewing that he finds the taste truly awful. He cannot hide his
feelings⑯,
except when the waiters ask if everything is all right. When this happens,
he smiles and nods, indicating that everything is fine. When the waiters
are not looking, however, he busies himself hiding the raw meat
anywhere he can reach — the sugar bowl, the tiny flower vase, inside a
bread roll and under a plate. He becomes so desperate in the end⑰ that
he even hides some inside the purse of a woman sitting near him and
throws some down the trousers of the restaurant’s violinist!
I like to watch Mr Bean on TV but I wouldn’t want to meet someone
like him in real life, and I certainly wouldn’t want to have dinner with
him!
句为it is clear that ...
第二段使用一系列的动作描写,如be seated, take out, write,

TEXT 2 The Contemporary Chaplin
Rowan Atkinson is an English actor, comedian and screenwriter. In
Britain, Mr Atkinson is mostly famous for① many successful TV shows
but internationally we know him best as the awkward, clumsy, but
always amusing Mr Bean.[1]If you think that Rowan Atkinson is
anything like② his famous creation, then you are in for a surprise. On
the contrary③, he is nothing like④ Mr Bean.
Rowan was born on 6 January, 1955.He grew up⑤ on a farm with
his parents and three older brothers. His father was very strict and did not
believe in⑥ the value of television.
Rowan had a very successful academic career. At the age of 13, he
was awarded a scholarship⑦ to a boarding school⑧.Later, he studied
at Newcastle University, where he attained the highest marks⑨ in his
year.At Oxford, he obtained his master’s degree⑩ in electrical
engineering.[2]This may explain why he loves fast cars, of which he
has many.
When Rowan was young, he had a stutter and to make his speech
clearer, he began to speak very carefully. This may be why some of his
characters have unusual ways of speaking.
[3]As early as⑪ primary school, Rowan had already shown a
talent for⑫ acting, but it was only later at university that he decided to
become an actor.A key event occurred one day in 1976 when he was
playing around and pulling a face⑬ in the mirror.“I discovered my
face,” he said later.
[4]John Lloyd, who worked as a producer for BBC Television,
says that one rarely meets someone with such genius, and that when he
worked with Atkinson he became convinced that Rowan would be more
famous than Charlie Chaplin.
of which he has many是一个由“介词+关系代词”引导的非限制性定

Each year at Girl Scout summer camp, the night I, as a kid,
expected most was the closing campfire, a few hours of silliness that
marked our final evening together. All week, my teammates and I had
been addicted to our skit (滑稽短剧) performance, editing lines and
practicing scenes.
Skits and songs are deeply rooted in the camp experience. The days
might be all about sports or nature, but night-time entertainment is a
kid’s dream.Similar to a talent show, some performances are
educational but mostly, they just make you laugh.Talent is irrelevant,
and audience engagement through call and response is essential.
In the camp, social rule disappears and space for self-exploration
forms.Shy kids come out of their shells, and cool kids let their guard
down. They get to open up this door to a part of themselves that they
wouldn’t have felt safe to show at school or at home.
It’s a decade ago that I performed as a camp member, and I never
thought of skits from a skill-building view. But I now realize this rich
camp tradition left a great impression on me.Through camp skits, I
developed my sense of humor, built confidence in front of a crowd, and
learned how to accept others for their quirks (怪癖).
Maybe we can make our schools or communities more like summer
camps by bringing the silliness of skits into our families and classrooms to
reconnect with ourselves and each other. The next time you’re sitting
around a campfire with friends and family, give it a try.Embrace the
discomfort and invite your loved ones to join in on the improvising (即兴

the better.

When we think about what makes
humans unique, a good sense of humor is often high on the
list.Laughter and playful teasing seem like traits only we
possess. However, recent research suggests that animals — particularly
great apes — may also engage in behavior that resembles humor.
A study led by primatologist (灵长类动物学家) Isabelle Laumer
at the Max Planck Institute reveals fascinating insights.“We
documented young apes deliberately sneaking up to hit adults, then
waiting expectantly for a reaction,” Laumer explains.“This isn’t
random play — it meets all the criteria of intentional teasing.” Over 75
hours of video recordings showed this behavior mirrors how human
children joke: repetitive, surprising, and aimed at seeking
responses. The researchers noted that the apes even paused to watch for
the adult’s reaction, much like a child waiting to see if their joke
landed.
But humor in animals may not be limited to apes.Dog owners often
notice their pets making breathy, snorting sounds during play, which
some scientists interpret as laughter. In a 2025 study, researchers found
that playing these sounds to shelter dogs reduced their stress
levels.Similarly, dolphins emit joyful sounds during play-fighting,
elephants trumpet excitedly when playing, and some parrots tease other
animals — like confusing dogs with whistles — just for fun.
Why might animals exhibit humor? In humans, laughter
strengthens social connections and eases tension.Scientists argue that
playful teasing in apes or “laughter” in dogs could serve a similar
purpose — breaking the ice and reinforcing relationships. Some
researchers believe these behaviors may have evolved (进化) to help
animals manage complex social ranks or reduce conflict. However,
Laumer cautions that more research is needed to confirm this theory, as
observing humor in animals remains challenging.
While we may never know if animals understand punchlines, their
behaviors hint at humor’s deep evolutionary roots. As Laumer reflects:
“The line between human and animal laughter isn’t as sharp as we
thought.”
