CLICK FOR A FRIEND?
How would you feel if moving to a new town meant losing track of① your friends? What if② the only way of getting news from faraway friends was writing letters that took ages to be delivered? This was how things worked not very long ago③.[1]Thanks to advances in technology④, how we make friends and communicate with them⑤ has changed significantly⑥.
[2]Nowadays, we can move around the world⑦ and still stay in touch with the people⑧ that we want to remain friends with.[3]Social media tools⑨ let us see what our friends are up to⑩ and maintain friendships⑪.All you need is a wi-fi connection.
The digital age⑫ also enables us to find people who share our interests⑬, such as collecting model cars⑭ or playing an unusual instrument⑮.[4]Whatever our hobbies, the Internet can connect us with others who also enjoy doing them, even if they live on the other side of the world.

But when you “ friend ” people online, does this mean that they really are your friends?
It depends⑯.
If people always exchange true personal information⑰ online, then yes, these friendships can be real and meaningful .[5]But we need to keep in mind⑱ that what we see on social media is often not the whole truth about a person.
On social media sites⑲, people tend to⑳ post only positive updates that make them appear happy and friendly. But smiling photos can hide real problems.Remember the saying: on the Internet, nobody knows you’re a dog.A young person could be old; a woman could be a man; we could even be sharing our information with criminals㉑.
But this doesn’t mean that we should throw the baby out with the bathwater㉒.Although technology has changed the way we acquire friends, the meaning of friendship and our longing for friends㉓ remain the same㉔.[6]As Aristotle said, no one would choose to live without friends, even if he had all other goods.

His name was Nado, and his family had just moved here this school year.He invited me to his home, and his family treated me like a special guest, which made me feel very welcome. He said hospitality (好客) was very basic to his culture, and strangers were always treated very kindly. His mom brought out some great food, and offered me some tea.Nado’s father and two sisters wanted to hear all about me and my family, and my schooling.
Nado’s whole family had to leave their lifelong home because war had broken out, and it wasn’t safe there anymore. They left with only what they could carry. His family was happy to feel safe, and they got used to American culture quickly. They seemed pleased that Nado had brought a friend home to meet them.

Social relationships are considered important for human happiness, but it is common that many of us lose touch with friends and family that we were once close to.
As old friends who had reconnected, Professor Lara Aknin and Dr.Gillian Sandstrom wanted to find out what stops other people from doing the same.Sandstrom said, “We live in a time when people have fewer close friends.”
The researchers looked at the attitudes of almost 2,500 participants to reconnect with old friends, the barriers (阻碍) and the reasons for doing so.“We found that 90% of the participants had lost touch with someone they still cared about.Yet, 70% were neutral (中立的), or even negative, about the idea of getting back in touch at that moment, even when they felt warm about the friendship,” said Aknin.
The researchers also studied how many people were willing to actually reach out to an old friend.Even when participants wanted to reconnect, and thought the friend would be thankful, had their contact information, and were given time to write and send a message, only about a third actually sent it.
The top reported barriers included fears that one’s old friend might not want to hear from them, and that it would be “too uncomfortable after all this time” and feeling “ashamed”.Being too busy — both the old friend and the participant — was the lowest reported reason for not reaching out.Notably, the researchers found that participants believed there were only a few compelling reasons for getting in touch, with the friend’s birthday reported as the most acceptable.Reconnecting over the memory of a shared experience was the second most reported reason.Participants were least likely to consider getting in touch with an old friend to ask them for help.
As part of the research, the researchers tested certain methods. They found that starting by practicing social connection with present networks was the most successful method. It increased reach-out rates by over two thirds. With this practice, they were much more likely to progress towards messaging someone they had lost touch with.

How to Repair a Tipped-Over Friendship Boat
We’ve all heard the saying “the friendship boat can tip over easily”.When a friendship hits a rough patch or even falls apart, it can leave us feeling sad and empty.9. With the right actions, you can fix the broken bond and get the friendship back on track.
The first step to repair a friendship is to take the initiative to communicate.Don’t let pride get in the way of saving your friendship.Instead of waiting for your friend to reach out, be brave and start a conversation. When talking, listen carefully to their feelings without interrupting.10. Second, it’s important to apologize sincerely if you’re in the wrong.11. A genuine apology isn’t just about saying “I’m sorry” — it also means admitting your mistake and showing that you’ll try to do better next time.
Third, give your friend some space and time.12. Pushing them to forgive you right away may make things worse.Respect their pace and let them process their emotions.
13. Small, consistent efforts like remembering their favorite snack or checking in on them regularly can rebuild trust.Over time, these little things will remind your friend of how much the friendship means to you.In the end, a repaired friendship is often stronger than before, as it’s been tested and cherished.
A.Avoid making excuses or shifting the blame to others.
B.It’s also helpful to show your care through small actions.
C.Many people struggle with how to fix a broken friendship.
D.Sometimes, people need time to calm down after a conflict.
