Adding Chinese Elegance to the Corridor
I suggest featuring traditional Chinese calligraphy and the four treasures of the study (brush, ink, paper, and
inkstone).
To present them,we can set up several low glass display cases along the corridor, each showing one of the four
treasures with short English introductions.Beside the displays,we can hang several calligraphy works of famous
Chinese poems, such as those by Li Bai or Wang Wei,with pinyin and English translations.
Moreover,I recommend setting up an interactive table where exchange students can try writing simple Chinese
characters with a brush under the guidance of student volunteers. This will not only decorate the corridor but also give
our British friends a memorable,hands-on experience of Chinese culture.

That evening,I sent a message to our class group chat."Mrs.Harper has been hospitalized,"I typed,my fingers
trembling slightly."For months, she has brightened our Thursdays with her homemade lemon tea and unwavering
kindness. Now,it is high time we repaid her generosity."I then shared her unfinished mission:repairing the Reading
Comner. To my astonishment,an overwhelming wave of support flooded in.Classmates volunteered to bring toolkits, sew
the torn cushions, and repaint the shabby shelf.By midnight,a dozen of us had formed a repair team, driven by a shared
determination to transform her handwritten wish into reality. No administrative order was issued;we were simply
responding to the warmth she had sown in our hearts.
The following Thuirsday, the library doors finally opened again. What greeted Mrs.Harper was nothing short of a
miracle. The once-broken chair stood firm, its leg reinforced;the shelf gleamed with fresh paint;and the cushions,
meticulously stitched, lay invitingly by the window where sunlight poured in.A hand-painted sign read:"Mrs.Harper's
Corner-Where Kindness Finds a Home."As she stepped inside,leaning on a cane,her eyes welled up with tears.I
handed her a steaming cup of lemon tea and whispered,"For the long hours of reading ahead."She clutched the cup,her
smile radiating a quiet joy.In that moment,I realized that true education extends far beyond textbooks-it flourishes in
the small, selfless acts of gratitude that bind a community together.

M:Hi,Annie. My family and I are having a few friends over for a barbecue in our backyard tomorrow night. We might
watch an outdoor film.Would you like to come?
W:Sure,I'd love to.It will be more fun than eating in a restaurant.
Text 2
W:Do you know that Mr Rich won second prize in the city marathon?
1/3
M:Wow!That's amazing. No wonder he's always pushing us to train hard in PE class.Let's congratulate him on the
prize!
W:Shall we give him a bunch of flowers as a gift?
M:Perfect idea! It'll be a nice way to show our appreciation.
Text 3
W:The fashion show is wonderful. The design of those clothes amazes me so much
M:Well, you're wasting your time watching it.I think the clothes like that are not suitable for us to wear in our daily life.
Text 4
M:Fortunately,I woke you when Mrs.White was lecturing on British history.Otherwise, she would have criticized you.
Why are you so sleepy?
W:I stayed up late talking with my cousin Kate last night.Uncle Alex will send her to study abroad.
Text 5
W:I'm stuck between medicine and engineering. My dad wants me to be a doctor.
M:You shouldn't just go with his advice.Ask yourself what you really want to learn.Choose a major that lines up with
your interests.

M:Good morning,is that Professor Clark?
W:Yes,speaking.How can I help you?
M:This is Kevin from your Monday morning literature class.I hate to call with bad news, but I'm afraid I can't make it
to class today.
W:What happened?
M:To celebrate winning the basketball match last Friday, some teammates and I tried something fun on Sunday.
Unluckily,I had a small skiing accident and hurt my left arm. It's not very serious.
W:I'm glad it's not worse.So you won't be able to attend today's session,right?
M:That's right.I assure you that I've finished the literature report due today.I'll email it to you this afternoon.
W:It's OK.Please take good care of yourself.
M:I will.Thank you.

W:Good morning,Powernet Software.Can I help you?
M:Hi,I've been trying to order some of your software from the website, but there seems to be a problem because my
order didn't go through.
W:Sorry, sir. There was a problem with one of the servers this morning.
M:Would it be possible for me to place my order through you now? It's for my work.I don't want to have to wait until
tomorrow as I might be out to call on clients.
W:Sure. What is it you would like to order from us?
M:Your site had a great offer on something called Viva Voce.Could you tell me something more about this product,
please?
W:It's one of our best-selling products. We have the standard edition and the professional edition, which are reasonably
priced.

M:Amy,I need to stop at the bank to withdraw some cash.
W:Why not just pay with your phone?
M:Actually,I've stopped using online payment for the past three months.
W:Oh,you must be worried that online payment isn't secure.
M:No,it is safe. But paying online is too convenient and that makes me accidentally overspend all the time.
W:Oh,I've also bought clothes and shoes I didn't need because they were on sale. But I've found that if I go over my
spending every night, that keeps me from spending too much.
M:I tried that strategy, but it just didn't work. When I was tired and hungry,I'd use my phone to order food.
W:Well, what do you do now then?
M:I go to the bank once a week, and the rest of the time I keep my bank card at home,so I can't get more cash out.
W:What prevents you from just going to the bank and getting more money,if you want to buy something?
M:The first month I did withdraw extra cash twice, but I felt guilty about it.After that I refuse to spend more than what I
had budgeted, and by now it's just a habit.

M:Good evening.Welcome to Parenting Today.I'm your old friend David Brown.Tonight,we're discussing digital
parenting with Dr.Lisa Chen.Good evening,Dr.Chen.
W:Good evening,David.
M:Dr.Chen, many parents these days track their kids locations and online activity. What's your perspective on that?
W:That's right. But like most things,it has two sides-there are downsides too.
M:What kind of downsides are we talking about?
W:While some parents think monitoring kids keeps them safe, studies show it can harm trust.Teens often feel restricted,
and some even bypass controls, which might make them less safe.
M:Do you know any teens who dislike that?
W:Yes.A 16-year-old boy once told me,"At my age,I should be the one deciding if I'm tracked."
M:So,what's a better approach for parents?
W:Parents can have open conversations with their kids. For example, saying,"Let's set the rules together"instead of just
laying down the law. That way, kids learn to use technology responsibly without feeling the need to rebel.
M:Great advice!Thank you so much for joining us.
W:My pleasure.Happy parenting,everyone!

M:Hi,Michelle. It's Dan.There has been a slight change to my schedule. It looks like I'm going to have to stay here a
couple of extra days.Everything is fine, but my business partner and I still have some details to discuss. So that means I
will need to fly from Los Angeles to Denver sometime early Tuesday morning.Make sure I arrive before noon, though,
because that meeting should take the rest of the day.I've already made all the necessary hotel arrangements myself. It's
going to be a really busy day,so please don't call me during that time.If you have something important, just leave a
message at the front desk of the Four Seasons Hotel.I'm staying in Room 609.You can book my return trip to Chicago
for the following day.Don't worry about finding me a ride home from the airport, for my wife will be picking me up.
And don't worry about canceling my meeting with our another customer.I've already spoken with him,and everything
has been rescheduled for Thursday when I get back to work.I just have one more favor from you.The day I get back is
my wedding anniversary and I haven't had time to make the proper plans. Can you get us a table at a fancy restaurant
somewhere around 7:00 pm?OK?Well,I think that's it.Thank you,Michelle.I'll see you Thursday.

The great elephant stands in the hot african sun.Slowly the beast lifts its head and its thick trunk delicately curls
around the leaves of a nearby tree, pulling out the leaves and politely slipping them into its mouth.
The beast's great grey skin is partly broken and aged from the African sun. Some mud drops on one side from its
last trip to a nearby river. Its rough hair sticks out from all over its skin and two large, white tusks (curve elegantly
from either side of its mouth.
Somewhere a lion roars and something else gives a loud high shout.A vulture (drifts over far above this
world, barely a black dot in the sky.The buzzing of the countless bush insects seems to collectively shift up in high tune,
almost like the whole of the savanna(热带草原)is singing some song that only they know..
I peer through the lens (at this scene. The zoom lens shows almost every detail of the elephant:the three
small cuts in its left ear from playing as a baby around thorn trees, the scar down its front leg where a lion caught it
unaware as a young adult, and weathering on its great, valuable tusks from decades of living in this unforgiving
grassland on a dusty continent.
And then the elephant looks at me.
It looks at me with those big, eyelashed eyes with a warmth coming outwards from a vast, hidden depth there.I can
suddenly feel its soul, and feel the line of elephants that came before this one, trailing back to the very beginnings of this
great savanna. We will never understand what wonders this ancient being and its kind have seen and whispered to each
other across the ages on this old, sacred grassland.
It looks at me,and it looks through me and sees me.
The elephant knows I am there. It always did.It is not running away, nor is it fighting. It accepts and forgives. It
loves. But,mostly,it just feels sad.It feels sorry for me.I cannot do this anymore.
I take my eye off the sights and hand the gun back to my partner."Let's go home,"I said in a quiet voice,"let's just
go home.”
24.According to the first two paragraphs, which word can best describe the elephant?
A.Mysterious.
B.Depressed.
C.Aggressive.
D.Graceful.
25.How does the author feel when he sees through the lens?
高三年级下学期适应性训练英语学科试卷第3页共8页
A.Strongly frightened by the wild animals.
B.Totally attracted to the unique landscape.
C.Deeply awed by the elephant's presence.
D.Greatly astonished by the elephant's tusks.
26.What does the author intend to do initially?
A.Take a photograph.
B.Hunt the elephant.
C.Observe the wildlife.
D.Study African grassland.
27.What can we learn from the passage?
A.Nature calms our anger.
B.Nature purifies our souls.
C.Nature heals our wounds.
D.Nature enriches our imagination.

Next time you find yourself feeling sleepy from the pitter-patter of rain outside your window, think how that same
rain might sound if you were a tiny seed planted below a free-falling droplet.Would you still be sleepy? In fact,MIT
engineers have found the opposite to be the case:Some seeds may come alive to the sound of rain.
Nicholas Makris,a professor of mechanical engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and his team
conducted experiments with rice seeds, which naturally grow in shallow water. They submerged (roughly 8,000
rice seeds in shallow water basins at a depth of about 2.5 to 3.0 centimeters and exposed them to the sound of falling
water droplets impacting the surface above. The seeds were placed away from the impact zone so that only the sound
would reach them. The team varied the droplet size and height to simulate different rains. The results were striking.
Seeds exposed to the sound of water were able to germinate ()24 to 37 percent faster than those in identical but
quiet conditions. In addition, seeds located closer to the drop impact point sensed the sound better and grew faster.
So how do seedshear"raindrops? The researchers explain that when a raindrop hits the surface of a puddle or the
ground,it generates a sound wave that makes the surroundings vibrate ()including any shallowly submerged seeds.
These vibrations are intense enough to dislodge(使移动)a seed's“statoliths”一一tiny gravity-sensing organelles
within certain cells of a seed.Their repeated displacement is a signal for seeds and seedlings to grow and sprout.
Scientists believe that this mechanism offers an advantage:If seeds are close enough to the surface to respond to the
sound of rain, they are likely at the perfect depth to take in water and safely grow to the surface."What this study is
saying is that seeds can sense sound in ways that can help them survive,"says Makris."The energy of the rain sound is
enough to accelerate a seed's growth."
28.What can be concluded from the experiments?
A.Droplet height didn't matter.
B.Seeds needed direct water contact.
C.Seeds closer to the sound grew faster.
D.Quiet conditions promoted growth
29.How do raindrop sounds make seeds grow?
A.By generating a special signal.
B.By transforming vibrations into energy.
C.By shaking some of their internal structures.D.By replacing their gravity-sensing organelles.
30.What advantage do rain-sensing seeds likely have?
A.Fast root growth.
B.Ideal growth position.
C.Efficient water storage.
D.Excellent hearing ability.
31.Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A.Secret Senses:How Plants Feel the World
B.Statoliths:TheBrain'Inside a Rice Seed
C.Beyond Sound:How Water Affects Seed Growth
D.A Wake-Up Call:Rain Sounds Drive Seed Growth

Getting into arguments, whether with family or strangers online, can feel like debating with a wall.We are probably
高三年级下学期适应性训练英语学科试卷第4页共8页
all guilty of thinking we're right, even if we don't have all the facts. This phenomenon called the"illusion of information
adequacy is detailed in a recent psychology study.
"Interpersonal conflict is on the rise, driving increases in anger, anxiety and stress,"said Angus Fletcher,a
neurophysiologist at the Ohio State University."We wanted to look into those misunderstandings and see if they could be
reduced.”
Fletcher's team surveyed 1,261 Americans online.Participants were divided into groups and given articles about a
fictional factory. One group read only reasons for the factory to merge()with another factory, another only reasons
for staying separate, and a Control group read all the arguments. They found that the majority of the groups who only
read the pro-or anti-merging arguments believed they had enough information to make a good decision, and would
follow the article's recommendation,,(公众号悦爱学堂)while about55and45 percent of the control group
recommended the factories merge or separate. The participants with the one-sided information also assumed that others
would make the same decision they did.
The team calls this belief the illusion of information adequacy,as Fletcher describes it,"The less our brain knows,
the more confident it is that it knows all it needs."These findings add to research on naive realism, the belief that one's
subjective understanding is objective truth. While naive realism studies focus on different understandings of the same
situation,Fletcher's research shows people may share the same understanding,if given sufficient information. When the
participants from the one-sided groups were asked to read all the arguments, some would change their minds. The mix of
opinions was comparable to the control group.
"One of the best ways to fight the illusion of information adequacy when disagreeing with someone is to stop and
ask,Is there something I'm omitting that would help me see their points better?'This can help avoid unnecessary
interpersonal conflict, allowing us to focus on working through key differences between ourselves and others,"said
Fletcher.
32.What is paragraph 2 mainly about?
A.The academic background of Angus Fletcher.
B.The importance of reducing misunderstandings.
C.The background and purpose of Fletcher's study.
D.The way to deal with frequent misunderstandings.
33.What were all three groups asked to do during the study?
A.Defend their own views.
B.Read the assigned arguments.
C.Recommend the best article.
D.Discuss before making decisions.
34.What does Fletcher's research find?
A.People from the control group are better decision-makers.
B.People with the same information make similar decisions.
C.People less informed are more likely to change their minds.
D.People with partial information overestimate their judgments.
35.What does the underlined word"omitting in the last paragraph probably mean?
A.Leaving out.B.Making up.
C.Giving up.
D.Taking in.

As an experienced teacher,I've come to understand the great value of hands-on activities.36 No other
creature on the Earth, not even our closest primate (relatives, has hands structured quite like ours, capable of
such precise grasping and control.
37 A lot of modern life involves simple movements, such as touching screens and pushing buttons, and some
experts believe our shift away from more complex hand activities could have consequences for how we think and feel.
Think about it:you're glued to your screen, typing out assignments or chatting with friends.Sure, that's a big part
of how we live now.38 Our brains are actually wired to respond to hand movements. When you do things like
cooking or knitting,it gives you a huge sense of achievement.
高三年级下学期适应性训练英语学科试卷第5页共8页
Research backs this up.Studies have shown that when people-and even rats-do things that require effort, they
handle stress better, solve problems faster, and even remember things better. For example, rats that had to dig for their
food were less stressed and better at solving problems than those that got food handed to them.39 Activities like
gardening and crafting can help reduce anxiety and depression, making you feel a whole lot better.
In my classroom,I make sure my students get a mix of traditional and digital activities.I encourage them to do
things using their hands. This makes learning more fun and helps them feel emotionally and mentally better.40
And your brain and hands will thank you!
A.The same goes for us humans.
B.The human hand is a wonder of nature.
C.Now,why don't you join me in an exciting card game?
D.Technology is constantly bringing new challenges to our hands.
E.However,we are doing less complicated hands-on work than we used to.
F.But nothing beats the satisfaction you get from doing something with your hands.
G.So next time you reach for a screen, consider picking up a pen, some clay or fabric.

Every Thursday afternoon, our school library opened an hour earlier for students who wanted a quiet place to study.

It was peaceful there, filled with the smell of old books and sunlight falling through tall windows.
Mrs.Harper, the librarian, knew me well. She was a small woman with silver hair and gentle eyes.Every Thursday,
she placed a cup of warm lemon tea on the corner of her desk."For long study hours,"she would say with a smile.I
never forgot the kindness.
One rainy afternoon,I arrived earlier than usual and noticed Mrs.Harper struggling to push a heavy cart (of
returned books across the carpet.I hurried over to help.As we worked together,I noticed that she stopped several times
to press a hand against her side.She looked pale."Are you okay?I asked."Just tired,"she answered softly."Getting
older is inconvenient sometimes."
After that day,I began helping her every Thursday. She always thanked me with the same warm smile and a cup of
lemon tea.
One Thursday near the end of the term,I entered the library and found it unusually dark and quiet. The front desk
was empty. No tea.No Mrs.Harper.Then I spotted the book cart standing alone near the history shelves. On top of it lay
her glasses and a small notebook.
I picked up the notebook carefully.Inside was a handwritten list titledThings to Finish Before Summer."Most
items had already been crossed out.Only one line remained:"Repair the Reading Corner before students return."I
looked toward the old reading corner by the windows. One chair had a broken leg,the paint on the shelf was chipping,
and several cushions()were torn open.Mrs.Harper had always wanted students to enjoy that little space.
Just then, the principal walked into the library."She was taken to hospital this morning,"he said quietly.I looked
again at the unfinished list in my hands.Outside, rain tapped softly against the windows, making the whole library feel
lonelier than before.

The following Thursday, the library doors finally opened again
