Text 1
W: Hey, Ben. Why don’t you tell me that great story of yours?
M: I’m sorry, but I need to call my manager right now. I’ll tell you when I’m finished.
Text 2
M: Does the chicken taste all right? I learnt from a cook yesterday.
W: It’s wonderful, but a little dry. To tell the truth, I can cook chicken too.
Text 3
W: What a beautiful sunny day today! Let’s go to the beach.
M: Okay, I’ll get my beach towel. You can lie down on the sand while I am swimming.
Text 4
M: Can I see your ticket, madam?
W: Oh, I was so busy looking at the paintings in this hall that I must have forgotten to buy one.
Text 5
W: I’m wondering what kind of clothes to wear for our visit. What’s the weather usually like in your country in September?
M: It’s not very pleasant, I’m sorry to say. Usually, September is the rainiest month of the year, but it’s not very cold.
Text 6
W: What are you reading?
M: It is a book written by a guy who was born without arms or legs.
W: What? So, how does he get around?
M: He can actually walk pretty well, but he can’t move that fast. He also has an assistant who helps him. He is actually quite successful.
W: He must have worked pretty hard.
M: Yeah. He travels around the world and gives speeches to young people. He’s changed many people’s lives. Even when nothing seemed possible, he stayed positive and put in even more effort.
Text 7
W: How was your weekend, Mark?
M: Pretty relaxing. I went travelling in Colorado and hiked Mount Elbert. It was tough, but the view from about 14,000 feet was worth it!
W: Impressive! How did you get there?
M: I flew to Colorado on Friday morning, and then took a bus from the airport to Leadville. There I met up with my college friend. On Saturday we drove to Mount Elbert and hiked the mountain. So, how was your weekend?
W: It was good. I learned to cook a new Indian dish. It was challenging, but I managed to do it. I even brought some to work.
M: Nice! What else did you do?
W: I also watched a football match. I know you’re into sports. Want to catch up during lunch break? You can try my new dish and give me some suggestions.
M: OK! It’s my pleasure.
Text 8
M: Hello, welcome to this week’s Meeting Artists. Our guest today is Mildred Howard. She will talk about her story with gardens. Welcome, Mrs Howard.
W: Thank you. To begin with, I’d like to share my childhood memories. Well, my parents had gardens. So I could always pick fresh tomatoes, pull out carrots and taste sweet melons.
M: Interesting! Many kids don’t know where food comes from.
W: That’s why I started the Alice Waters Garden Project.
M: Can you tell us something about it? For example, how does it work?
W: We design and build a 5-acre garden first. The kids, mainly aged from 7 to 12, work in the garden with their hands in the dirt. Then they take what they’ve grown to the kitchen and spend time cooking and developing recipes. This is the way they learn something about teamwork, creativity, and most importantly, where the food they eat every day comes from.
Text 9
W: Good afternoon! Welcome to the Service Centre. What can I do for you?
M: Good afternoon. I’d like to rent a two-bedroom apartment.
W: OK, do you have a specific location in mind?
M: Well, I’d like to live near the elementary school, or at least within 2 miles.
W: Do you teach at the school?
M: No. I teach at the university, but my son goes to school there.
W: OK. What price range can you afford?
M: $500 to $580 a month.
W: Would you prefer an apartment with furniture or an empty one?
M: With furniture, and we’d like to be able to cook at home.
W: Okay. Here are the photos of two apartments that I think will fit your needs. You can choose between them.
M: Thank you. Ah. The one on the Broadway Avenue looks nicer than the one on Main Street. When can I have a look?
W: You can look around now if you’d like. Let me get the key for you. If you are satisfied, we can sign an agreement today.
M: Great! Thanks. How much do you charge for the service?
W: $100.
M: All right.
Text 10
M: Hello, everyone. My name is John. Today I want to say something mainly about my daily life. First I want to say my life has changed a lot. When I was a child, I had a lot of time to play. But now I have to study all day. I used to play baseball and basketball with my classmates, but now I just stay at home and do my homework. I seldom watch TV these days, but I’m often busy preparing for my tests. Books were my good friends. I used to read a lot of cartoon books and storybooks instead of reading textbooks all day like now. I enjoy doing homework with my friends. But my parents don’t allow me to do that, because they think we will talk instead of studying. I disagree. We can learn a lot from each other. My mother is a doctor, and my father is an engineer. They expect me to be a doctor when I grow up, but I want to be a writer. Maybe I’ll be a doctor anyway, but I don’t think I could be a happy doctor.

第一节
A
根据Fees部分中“Kids from 3—7: Free; Kids from 8—18: 10 dollars a month; Adults: 15 dollars a month.”
根据最后一段“If you are interested, call 487-256-656 or 487-266-545, send an e-mail to hopebook@yahoo.com or visit our website at www.hopebookclub.com.” 故选A。
根据What you should do部分中“Everyone in the book club is expected to join in the discussion.”
根据第二段的“‘I saw it as an art that combines tradition and modernity, which was mostly the reason why I liked it,’ says Filippi.”
根据倒数第二段的“Two of his friends shared videos of his performances on social media, and the response was overwhelming. One video garnered 500,000 views, while the other received 200, 000 views.” 故选A。
根据最后一段的“Filippi believes that learning about different cultures is priceless, and he sees it as a means of personal growth.”
通读全文,尤其由第一段的“Having spent more than a decade on the dance floor, Niccolo Filippi, a 23-year-old Italian dance performer, recently decided to explore Chinese culture and its traditional dance forms and believes that this experience will not only boost his career, but also broaden his horizons beyond the world of dance.” 由此可知,D选项“An Italian dancer shows passion for Chinese-styled dance.”
根据文章第三段“The domes provide the plants’ water by harvesting freshwater from sea water. The domes are slightly hotter than the outside sea temperature, which means that water from the sea water ‘floor’ steams inside the dome and gathers on its inside surface as freshwater. This then ‘rains’ on the plants.”
根据画线词上文“‘This setup also allows an exchange of CO2 from the ocean inside the dome,’ adds Gamberini.”(甘贝里尼补充说:“这种设置还允许穹顶内海洋中的二氧化碳交换。”)及“We’ve noticed that this environment doesn’t really need to be refilled that much…”(我们注意到这个环境其实不需要再加那么多……) 故选A。
根据文章最后一段“However, Littlejohn says farming underwater, as the underwater garden is doing, is ‘necessary’ for future space exploration. ‘Probably the experience gained from growing underwater will give benefits in exploring further than we can yet see,’ he says.”
根据文章第一段“However, a decade ago, Luca Gamberini’s father decided to turn to underwater farming.”(然而,十年前,卢卡·甘贝里尼的父亲决定转向水下种植。)
根据第一段“Have you ever walked through a door and thought to yourself, ‘What was I going to do?’ If you have, you are not alone. Psychologists believe that walking through a door and entering another room create a ‘mental block’ in the brain. This is generally referred to as the doorway effect.”
根据第二段“In the early years of brain research, scientists thought that human memory was like a closet, with many sections in which we could store little boxes of experiences from our lives. Boxes would remain there forever, and whenever we had to look into them, we could just go to that particular section and find that box of memory.”以及第三段中的“Beautiful as this description of human memory formation sounds, it is not true. Our brain is much more complex than that. Psychological studies suggest that our memories are episodic (由松散片段组成的)in general. If you think back to anything, you’ll probably quickly realize our memories don’t function as clear narratives. Instead, they’re more episodic and divided into parts.”
根据倒数第二段“Baumann also points out that a busy and perhaps overloaded brain does seem to play some part in this phenomenon.”
根据最后一段“The good news is that experiencing such forgettable episodes after entering another room does not tell you anything about your memory and intelligence. So when you enter a room and suddenly forget why you are there, you should not think that Alzheimer’s disease is creeping up on you!” 故选A。
第二节

37.B 根据空前内容“Give a brief summary of the main characters, the setting and the central conflict of the movie. Never break the number one rule of movie reviews: don’t give too much away.” 选项B(别毁了你的读者对电影的兴趣。)

根据下文“You could treat your review like a formal college essay. But it’s more interesting if you make it your own. If your writing style is usually humorous or interesting, your review should be no exception. If you’re serious or dramatic, that works, too. Let your language and writing style reflect your unique view and personality—it’s much more entertaining for the readers.” 选项A(给它一些个性。) 故选A。

One possible version:
My camping experience
Hello everyone, I’m Li Hua. I’d like to share my camping experience last Sunday.
My family and I went camping in the forest park. Upon arrival, we set up our tents and prepared a delicious picnic with the food we brought. The park was incredibly beautiful, with fresh air and a peaceful atmosphere. We enjoyed a relaxing picnic surrounded by nature. In the afternoon, we explored the park, discovering various plants and fascinating creatures along the way. As night fell, we shared stories under the starry sky.
It was a truly magical experience. This camping trip was a fantastic opportunity to connect with nature and create lasting memories with my family.
One possible version:
Soon, Micah smiled broadly, “I’ve got it.” “What do we need?” I asked again. She said the baby bird needed some special bird food. Hearing this, I immediately phoned to place an order. While waiting for delivery, Micah added that we needed to name the bird. “How about ‘Chance’? I think it has a good chance of making it with your help,” I proposed. She didn’t say a word but nodded with a bright smile.
Before long, the bird food arrived and we fed the bird “Chance” at once. To our relief, the special food was to its taste. The following weeks, we went to feed and check on Chance every day. One day, Micah happily shared with me her finding that Chance became independent. Looking at her shining face, I was almost moved to tears. I never imagined that the bird Chance became the real chance to rebuild the emotion bridge between us. From then, I decided to accompany her more, just as what we had done to Chance. Company is the best love.

Having spent more than a decade on the dance floor, Niccolo Filippi, a 23-year-old Italian dance performer, recently decided to explore Chinese culture and its traditional dance forms and believes that this experience will not only boost his career, but also broaden his horizons beyond the world of dance.
His interest in diversifying his skills grew after he stumbled upon a short video of traditional Chinese-styled dance on YouTube. “I saw it as an art that combines tradition and modernity, which was mostly the reason why I liked it,” says Filippi.
Ever since, he has been closely following Chinese dance performers and watching numerous videos to learn more about the traditional style that he admires. “I prefer the traditional style because of its light movements. It also reflects my personality with elegance,” he adds.
Filippi’s chance came when he was invited to perform for a Chinese New Year celebration in the central Italian city of Florence. He has since fully committed himself to the art form, learning several pieces and putting his newfound passion into practice.
“The biggest difference that I found (compared to other disciplines) is the change of moods and emotional expressions among dances,” says Filippi, adding that he needed to shift from the dynamic moves of hip-hop to the graceful and fluid movements of Chinese dance. Despite various obstacles, Filippi’s efforts have not gone unnoticed. Two of his friends shared videos of his performances on social media, and the response was overwhelming. One video garnered 500,000 views, while the other received 200,000 views.
Filippi believes that learning about different cultures is priceless, and he sees it as a means of personal growth. “I like to think of a person as a book,” he says. “Embracing different traditions and cultures, such as Chinese culture and many others, is like adding new chapters to my book, making it more diverse and wonderful.”
( )24.What is the main reason why Filippi falls in love with traditional Chinese dance?
A.Its potential to boost his career.
B.Its mix of traditional and modern elements.
C.Its graceful and light movements.
D.Its true reflection of his elegant personality.
( )25.How does the author illustrate the popularity of Filippi’s videos?
A.By listing numbers. B.By giving an example.
C.By sharing a story. D.By making a comparison.
( )26.What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A.Filippi thinks little of learning from other cultures.
B.People prefer to write down their past experiences.
C.Accepting various cultures boosts personal growth.
D.A book with chapters on traditions is more wonderful.

The Gamberini family business, Ocean Reef Group, specialised in diving equipment. Agriculture was not part of the picture. However, a decade ago, Luca Gamberini’s father decided to turn to underwater farming.
To start, they used small, transparent (透明的) balloons sunk below the water and filled with air, making an underwater dome (穹顶). The plants are grown in a soil-free way.
The domes provide the plants’ water by harvesting freshwater from sea water. The domes are slightly hotter than the outside sea temperature, which means that water from the sea water “floor” steams inside the dome and gathers on its inside surface as freshwater. This then “rains” on the plants.
“This setup also allows an exchange of CO2 from the ocean inside the dome,” adds Gamberini. “We’ve noticed that this environment doesn’t really need to be refilled that much,” he says. “The light from the Sun that reaches underwater is also sufficient for the growth of the plants,” Gamberini adds.
To tend to the plants, divers enter the domes from below, their legs still in the water while their upper body in the air. When plants are harvested, they are placed in reusable bags or containers, which are sealed and brought to the surface of the sea to be collected.
At first Gamberini couldn’t really see a good reason for the farming. But around five years ago, the first time he visited one of the beautiful underwater domes, he found himself changing his mind.
Today, the underwater garden has six domes, each holding around 2,000 litres of air, located at depths of between five and 11 metres. The company has grown a huge variety of plants underwater, strawberries, lettuce, tomatoes, beans, quinoa, and even tobacco included.
Dr George Littlejohn, an associate professor of plant science at the University of Plymouth, says the technology is not yet at a stage where it is a practical way to produce high yields of crops. There are also some things to be improved, like the inconvenience of planting and harvesting. However, Littlejohn says farming underwater, as the underwater garden is doing, is “necessary” for future space exploration. “Probably the experience gained from growing underwater will give benefits in exploring further than we can yet see,” he says.

Have you ever walked through a door and thought to yourself, “What was I going to do?” If you have, you are not alone. Psychologists believe that walking through a door and entering another room create a “mental block” in the brain. This is generally referred to as the doorway effect.
In the early years of brain research, scientists thought that human memory was like a closet, with many sections in which we could store little boxes of experiences from our lives. Boxes would remain there forever, and whenever we had to look into them, we could just go to that particular section and find that box of memory.
Beautiful as this description of human memory formation sounds, it is not true. Our brain is much more complex than that. Psychological studies suggest that our memories are episodic (由松散片段组成的) in general. If you think back to anything, you’ll probably quickly realize our memories don’t function as clear narratives. Instead, they’re more episodic and divided into parts.
New research led by psychologist Oliver Baumann from Bond University in Australia suggests that it’s not so much the doorways that cause a memory wipe, as moving from one location to a significantly different one—it’s the abrupt change of scenes that prepares our minds for something new. “A good example is moving around in a department store,” says Baumann. “Taking the elevator between floors may have no effect on our memory, but moving from the store to the parking lot might cause us to forget something that we need to buy.”
Baumann also points out that a busy and perhaps overloaded brain does seem to play some part in this phenomenon. In other words, walking through open doors is thought to reset memory to make room for a new episode.
The good news is that experiencing such forgettable episodes after entering another room does not tell you anything about your memory and intelligence. So when you enter a room and suddenly forget why you are there, you should not think that Alzheimer’s disease is creeping up on you!
( )32.Which of the following would most probably be “doorway effect”?
A.You missed a call and forgot to ring back.
B.You read a book and forget what it is about.
C.You entered the office and forgot what to get.
D.You saw a man years ago and forget who he is now.
( )33.What can we learn from the passage?
A.All memories are linked in the brain.
B.Memories are clearly separated in the brain.
C.Not all the memories can be found in the brain.
D.Memories are stored in particular sections of the brain.
( )34.What can we infer from Baumann’s research?
A.Taking an elevator stimulates new memory.
B.Walking through open doors results in memory loss.
C.A sudden change of the scene boosts intelligence development.
D.An overloaded brain increases the possibility of doorway effect.
( )35.What does the author think of “doorway effect”?
A.Insignificant. B.Beneficial.
C.Influential. D.Damaging.

How to write a movie review
Whether it’s for pleasure or a job requirement, writing a good movie review can be a useful exercise. 36. If you’ve recently watched a film and want to share your opinions about it, here are some tips to help you compose a wonderful movie review.
Follow your main text with a short plot summary. It’s good to give readers an idea of the movie you’re reviewing. Give a brief summary of the main characters, the setting and the central conflict of the movie. Never break the number one rule of movie reviews: don’t give too much away. 37.
Move into your analysis of the movie. Write several paragraphs discussing the interesting elements in the movie that support your points. Discuss the acting, the direction, the cinematography and the setting, keeping your writing clear and easy to understand. 38.
Use plenty of examples to back up your points. If you make a statement about the movie, back it up with a descriptive example. Describe the way scenes looked, the way a certain person acted, camera angles, and so on. 39. In this way you are giving your readers a feel of the movie and continuing to express your comments on the film at the same time.
40. You could treat your review like a formal college essay. But it’s more interesting if you make it your own. If your writing style is usually humorous or interesting, your review should be no exception. If you’re serious or dramatic, that works, too. Let your language and writing style reflect your unique view and personality—it’s much more entertaining for the readers.
A.Give it some personality.
B.Don’t ruin the movie for your readers.
C.It is necessary to keep a humorous writing style.
D.You should first watch enough movies on your own.
E.You can use dialogues to help you express your views.
F.So don’t use too many technical terms about film making.
G.It allows you to explore your personal connection with a film.

When Micah was a child, I used to do many things with her. Later, I got promoted and was always on constant business trips. Three years’ devotion to work resulted in my absence from her life and now she was a teenage girl. Recently, I eventually managed to have enough time to accompany her.
For the last few weeks, Micah had watched mockingbirds make a nest in a tree and lay eggs there. Sometimes, I came to stay with her without being invited. But whenever I tried to break the ice, “I’m good.” was about all she said to me. Or “Leave me alone.”
“Why doesn’t she want to do things with me?” I thought as I set the table for dinner one evening, hoping for an emotion bridge to reappear between us. Did she feel hurt with my long absence? Lost in thought, I was seeking to mend the relationship.
“Mum!” Micah yelled suddenly. “Come quick!”
Surprised, I rushed out, only to find a little baby bird on the ground, weak and helpless. My eyes went to the branches above.
“The wind must have blown him out of the nest,” I said.
“No, it was Mr Whiskers—our cat. You let him go outside!” Micah said, a bit annoyed.
Looking at the nest without the parents, “I’m sorry,” I said and put the bird in my palm cautiously and gently. She didn’t reply, but did not refuse my offer to help, either. Deciding to take care of the little baby till it became independent, I placed it in its nest.
“What should we do next?” I asked. No answer again. Instead, Micah went inside and brought her iPad. “Bird videos?” I asked. “Yes. I’m finding out what to feed it,” she said seriously.
Paragraph 1:
Soon, Micah smiled broadly, “I’ve got it.”
Paragraph 2:
Before long, the bird food arrived and we fed the bird “Chance” at once.
