In a small coastal community in Ecuador known as La Isla, I was handing out clothes and toys to children standing in a long line in their schoolyard. They had gathered there that morning, likely wearing the only clothes they owned. They were quiet and polite, eyes bright with excitement. Watching this, my mind flashed back to a day I would never forget.
I was five years old that Christmas Eve in 1988, growing up in Ecuador, with my parents and elder sister. My father came into my bedroom and gave me a plastic cowboy. I’d never owned a real toy of any kind. My family didn’t have much. My mum stayed home, caring for my sister and me. My dad drove a food delivery truck and was on the road for days at a time.
“I hope you like your toy,” my father said, kneeling down and holding me close. I felt the warmth of his body, as if in giving me this toy he was also giving me a part of himself. Even at age five, I knew that had been a gift.
By sixth grade our family moved to the US, and life got easier. I did really well in high school. Every good grade was a thank you to my parents for all they’d done for me. I went on to college, and after graduation, with my degree in hand, I became a pharmacist (药剂师). I was finally able to buy nice gifts for my family, but I could never give in equal measure the love I’d felt from that unexpected gift I’d received as a little boy. I wished every child could know that feeling.
Two years into my career, I made my first trip to La Isla. Two years later, I returned with my nonprofit (非营利) organization called Toys for Ecuador. My parents, sister and I travelled to towns across rural Ecuador with Christmas presents for children and gift baskets for seniors.
It was a journey that not only fulfilled a childhood wish to share that special feeling of love and generosity, but also reaffirmed (重申) my commitment to making a difference in the lives of others.

A.By satisfying their wish to make him a pharmacist.
B.By improving his academic achievements.
C.By buying them some unexpected gifts.
D.By setting up a nonprofit organization.
( )27.What can be the best title for the text?
A.Toys for Ecuador gave children Christmas gifts
B.Father’s gift pushed a boy to succeed academically
C.Father’s love never left boyhood memories behind
D.A plastic cowboy inspired Toys for Ecuador

Scientists have known for a long time that the colour of a room or the light in it can affect our feelings. Many prisons and hospitals have rooms that are painted pink, for pink has a calming effect. Then, what role does colour play in the interaction with food? A new study has discovered for us the link between colour and food cognition (认知).
Professor Falfan and his team carried out this study by asking participants (参与者) to recognize food pictures in black and white. The result was in agreement with his former prediction (猜测). Although colour is not a decisive factor, it has a clear influence on food recognition. Without colour, people unsurprisingly made more mistakes and it’s easy to mistake different dishes as the same food. However, this increase in error rates does not change the accuracy (准确) of food recognition among different people. Those with a higher visual (视觉的) ability always did better.
Then the researchers raised a new question: Would people with colour blindness be less food neophobic (挑食的) than those with normal colour cognition? They gathered participants with colour blindness and required them to fill in a questionnaire (问卷) that measures how resistant (抵制的) they are to new foods. The result suggested that colourblind people are indeed less likely to be food neophobic than non-colourblind people, because the limited colours that colourblind people can see reduce the signals that may raise freshness, safety or anxiety about new foods.
So that is why colour affects food cognition. The researchers believe that colourful foods tend to attract our visual attention more, thus improving our cognitive ability of food. Moreover, colour may also be connected with the nutritional value of food. Although this has not been fully proved, brightly coloured foods often give the impression (印象) of a healthier and more nutritious diet. Therefore, people tend to prefer meals with a range of colourful foods.
( )28.How did Professor Falfan and his team carry out their research?
A.By doing experiments and surveys.
B.By studying data from other researches.
C.By observing food in different colours.
D.By interviewing some colourblind people.
( )29.According to the study, why are colourblind people less likely to be food neophobic?
A.Because they have a much higher visual ability.
B.Because they have less interest in tasting foods.
C.Because their attention is more attracted by food colours.
D.Because their feelings are less influenced by food colours.
( )30.What is the reason for people preferring colourful foods?
A.They remind them of good memories.
B.They help reduce their negative feelings.
C.They look healthier and more nutritious.
D.They often have a better smell and taste.
( )31.What is the primary conclusion of the study?
A.Colour plays an important role in food cognition.
B.Colour has much influence on people’s feelings.
C.Colour blindness makes people more food neophobic.
D.Colour is connected with the nutritional value of food.

People are motivated to try a vegetarian diet for different reasons—from religious beliefs to potential health and environmental benefits. But many people have a hard time sticking with it. In fact, studies show many self-reported vegetarians actually do consume some animal products.
“A lot of people who want to be vegetarian are perhaps not able to,” says Dr Nabeel Yaseen of Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. “We wanted to know if genetics is part of the reason,” he says.
Yaseen and his colleagues compared the DNA of about 330,000 people, using data from the UK Biobank initiative. The study included 5,324 vegetarians, who had not eaten any animal flesh or products obtained from animals for at least one year. They found 34 genes that may play a role in maintaining a strict vegetarian diet. And they identified 3 genes that are more tightly linked to it.
“What we can say is that these genes have something to do with vegetarianism (素食主义),” Yaseen says. “Perhaps vegetarians have different variants (变体) of these genes that make them able to pursue a strict vegetarian diet,” he explains. The study is published in PLOS ONE, a science journal.
Of the 3 genes most strongly associated with vegetarianism, the authors say two of them have important functions in fat metabolism (新陈代谢). The study can’t answer exactly how genetic differences could shape or influence vegetarians, but Dr Yaseen has some ideas. “One theory is that maybe there’s a fat nutrient, or nutrients, in meat that some people need and others don’t,” he says.
“Lots of factors influence what we eat, everything from our taste preferences, to our budgets, to our culture. So, the idea that food choice is also influenced by genetics is not surprising,” Yaseen says. “But this is just the first step,” he adds. “More research is needed to determine which genes and which variants may be crucial.”
( )32.What is the purpose of the study?
A.To promote vegetarianism among senior people.
B.To determine why people choose a vegetarian diet.
C.To explore the cultural influence on vegetarianism.
D.To find out relation between genes and vegetarianism.
( )33.How does the author mainly organize Paragraph 3?
A.By giving examples. B.By giving definitions.
C.By making comparisons. D.By listing some numbers.
( )34.Which of the following can replace the underlined “flesh” in Paragraph 3?
A.Egg. B.Milk. C.Meat. D.Blood.
( )35.What can we learn from Yaseen’s words?
A.Genes have no influence on vegetarianism.
B.More research needs conducting to identify critical genes.
C.The study has successfully determined the key genetic variants.
D.The study has accurately explained how genetics shapes food choices.

Dear teachers and fellow classmates,
第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Amy and I had been best friends since primary school and spent almost every day with each other. Sometimes, other children said we were no fun because we were both very academic (学术的) and liked to study, but we liked it that way. Both of us were very hard-working and always got good grades at school.
I thought we would be like this forever. However, our friendship was on the rocks recently.
One Monday, we had a surprise maths quiz. I thought it was quite easy and was not worried about the results.
I must have sounded very proud of myself after the quiz, saying how easy it was and how I was sure to get a good grade. And many classmates looked at me with admiration.
The next day after class, my maths teacher told me that I had the lowest grade in the class! I felt so ashamed and couldn’t believe it; I must be really stupid to fail a simple maths quiz!
Afterwards, I pretended to be cheerful and greeted others with a smile as usual, but Amy sensed something was wrong.
We went to wash our hands in the girls’ washroom before lunch. She patted me on the shoulder and asked me what happened. Seeing her concerned look, I had to admit how badly I had done in the maths quiz. I begged her not to tell anyone else, and couldn’t help sobbing (啜泣). She held me tightly, saying she would keep my secret, and cheered me up.
However, the next day, I noticed that my classmates were staring at me as I came into maths class. When I went to sit down, I was shocked to find a piece of paper on my desk that said, “…Stupid Sarah got a D!” I was so upset that I felt like crying.
注意:续写词数应为150个左右。
Paragraph 1:
Then I began to cry, wondering who let out my secret—was it Amy?
Paragraph 2:
When hearing the truth from Alice, I was shocked and couldn’t wait to find Amy to apologize.

W: Time flies when you’re busy, doesn’t it?
Text 4
W: I was so lucky to get a ticket to the concert last night. It was great fun. I went with my father.
M: What did you do after the concert?

M: Bye. Anyway, I have to go home and finish my homework.
Text 5
W: Paul, you’re so wet! What happened?
M: I forgot my raincoat, and it started raining heavily while I was at school! I had parked my car far from the class building, so I got completely wet walking back to it.
Text 6
W: Look, what a fine day it is!
M: Yes. It’s beautiful. Yesterday, it rained all day.
W: Well, sunshine often comes after the rain.
M: It’s certainly a nice day to do something outside. Do you have any good ideas?

M: It might be at least twice as expensive that way.
W: Oh, I see. I need a babysitter for Helen on that day. Is it on Saturday?
M: Yep.

M: Perhaps you could offer higher pay to the babysitter.
W: I’ll try.

W: Hi, Jim. How was your trip to Ashford?
M: Great! There is a really beautiful old tower there. It was built in the 10th century, and it was repaired in the 17th century. We also saw some old wooden houses that were built there in the 13th century.
W: Was it expensive to visit the tower?
M: It’s seven pounds usually. But it was five pounds for us because there were more than eight people in our group.
W: That’s good. What about lunch?
M: There was a hill outside the village, so we climbed up and had it there. We could see the river from the top. Then later we went for a walk in a beautiful small garden.
W: What about the weather?
M: Well, we had umbrellas, so we kept dry. It’s a shame it wasn’t sunny.
W: Oh, no. It’s windy here.

M: So what’s up?
W: I want to invite you to my sister’s wedding party next Saturday. Would you like to be my guest?

W: No problem. See you next Saturday.
Text 10
W: Good morning, everybody. I’m Mary Stone. Today I’m going to share with you my hurricane experience. Well, it was my first hurricane since my family moved here to North Carolina. Before it came, we had continual day warnings of it from the radio, the TV and the newspapers for a week. We had to get everything out of the yard. We didn’t have a basement or a storeroom, so we put the yard furniture and waste containers into the garage. And we bought lots and lots of food and water. We even filled the bath with water. We also checked the flashlights and the small radio in case they couldn’t work. The hurricane was terrible. The rain was so heavy that we couldn’t see out the windows. The wind was about 80 miles an hour and it reached 100 miles an hour at times. It knocked down the power lines and we didn’t have electricity for two days. We were lucky. Only one tree came down in the backyard. I was so scared! Most of the time, I stayed in the bathroom. But my husband was more relaxed. He lit candles and listened to the news on the radio.

第一节
One possible version:
My family tradition
Dear teachers and fellow classmates,
I am glad to stand here and share with you my family tradition—honesty.
When I was a child, I found a wallet in the park which was filled with money. I was really excited because I could buy lots of toys. But then, I remembered what my parents had always taught me—to be honest. So, I waited for a long time until the owner finally came back. With relief and gratitude in his eyes, I felt a sense of pride and happiness.
This family tradition of honesty has a huge impact on me. I never cheat in exams and my friends trust me deeply. It is like a lighthouse, guiding me through the journey of life. Not only does it shape my character but also influences my actions and decisions.
Thank you for your listening!
One possible version:
Then I began to cry, wondering who let out my secret—was it Amy? Yes, it must be her since I didn’t tell anyone else. I was so angry that I went straight to Amy and told her we weren’t going to be friends any more because she couldn’t keep her word. She was really upset and swore (发誓) that she hadn’t told anyone. I didn’t believe what she had said and began to avoid her. Several days later, another classmate Alice told me that it was another girl who let out my secret after overhearing (偶然听到) our talk that day.
When hearing the truth from Alice, I was shocked and couldn’t wait to find Amy to apologize. My mind quickly raced back to the happy moments when Amy and I were together. I couldn’t deny how I missed her these days when I struggled to ignore her. How I wished I hadn’t said such words to her. My heart was pounding when I approached her. “Could you forgive me, Amy?” Dropping my head, I dared not see her. A warm hand held mine and her familiar smile appeared again. With tears streaming down my face, I felt a wave of happiness flooded me. Mutual trust is the secret to lasting friendship.
