Thanksgiving isn’t just a holiday in the US. Some other countries have their own versions of Thanksgiving.
Brazil
Legend has it that Joaquim Nabuco, Brazil’s first ambassador (大使) to the US, enjoyed the American holiday so much that he persuaded his government to set up a similar day of thanks. Dia de Acao de Gracas is also celebrated every year on the fourth Thursday of November to give thanks for the fall harvest. The Brazilian holiday ends with a colourful and noisy carnival (狂欢节) and parade.
Japan
Japan’s version of the holiday, called “Kinro Kansha no Hi” or Labour Thanksgiving Day, is observed on November 23. It originated from an ancient rice harvest festival called Niiname-sai. Later, the holiday’s purpose was to celebrate the rights of workers. Today, Labour Thanksgiving Day is mainly observed with small acts of community service. Children often mark the occasion by handing out thank-you notes to firefighters, police officers, and other frontline workers.
Canada
Thanksgiving in Canada is a low-key affair with no big parades or retail sales. The holiday mainly focuses on families and friends getting together for a meal. While many parts of the country get the day off, it is an optional (可选择的) holiday in Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland & Labrador. As a result, the celebrations often take place on the weekend before the holiday.
Ghana
Ghana celebrates its version of Thanksgiving in August. As the story goes, the Ga settlers arrived in Ghana in the 16th century after facing lots of hardships during their travels across Africa. They celebrated their first harvest in Ghana with a feast, and a tradition was born. Before the festival, there is a month-long ban on noise, especially drumming. Similar to Thanksgiving, Homowo Day is a festival of food.

Kris Bowers, a famous musician and film-maker, grew up playing the piano through Los Angeles Unified’s music programme. But it was only a few years ago that he learned about the people who repaired the musical instruments (乐器) that brought him and so many other students joy and support over the years.
The film The Last Repair Shop, directed by Bowers, pays attention to those people who have repaired more than 130,000 students’ instruments for free—work that has started in a L.A. shop since 1959.
For Bowers, making the film was a meaningful job. He learned about the work of Steve Bagmanyan, a worker who tuned (调音) the pianos in Bowers’ primary and middle schools. “I was able to thank someone who helped me a lot on my way to becoming a musician,” Bowers says.
Besides Bagmanyan, who is one of four workers, each personal story intersects (交织) with a piece of L.A. and maybe even United States history. Dana Atkinson, who works in the strings division, shares his story. Paty Moreno, the only female worker in the shop, talks about her journey moving to the US from Mexico and raising her children here. She says her job in the repair shop helped her have a peaceful life. Duane Michael fixes the woodwind instruments and talks about his time on tour with Elvis in the past.
Directing the film gave Bowers a chance to mix his love for music and his city. “Having that deep love for this city and having accidentally discovered this music repair shop and this programme make me very proud of the city,” Bowers says.
The film has already brought attention to the repair shop. There is now a $15 million fund-raising effort set up by the LAUSD Education Foundation to help keep the programme running and invest (投资) in future instrument workers.
( )24.What is the main focus of The Last Repair Shop?
A.The long history of Los Angeles.
B.The stories of instrument workers.
C.How to make a living in America.
D.A group of music loving students.
( )25.Why did the film mention Steve Bagmanyan?
A.He helped Bowers a lot in film-making.
B.He taught music well in Bowers’ schools.
C.He built the repair shop in L.A. in 1959.
D.He helped Bowers become a musician.
( )26.What does the repair shop get from the film?
A.People’s attention and support in money.
B.Much praise from well-known musicians.
C.The growing need for instrument repairs.
D.More chances to join musical programmes.
( )27.Which is probably the best title of the passage?
A.A music programme in Los Angeles
B.A film-maker named Kris Bowers
C.A famous piano shop in Los Angeles
D.A film named The Last Repair Shop

What is your earliest childhood memory? Can you remember learning to walk? Or talk? The first time you watched a television programme? Adults seldom call back events much earlier than the year or so before entering school, just as children younger than three or four seldom remember any specific, personal experiences.
A variety of explanations have been suggested by psychologists (心理学家) for this “childhood amnesia”. Now Annette Simms, a psychologist of State University of New York, offers a new explanation for childhood amnesia. According to Dr Simms, children need to learn to use someone else’s spoken description of their personal experiences in order to turn their own short-term, fast-forgotten impressions of them into long-term memories. In other words, children have to talk about their experiences and hear others talk about them. Without this verbal reinforcement (言语强化), children cannot form permanent memories of what they have experienced.
So why should personal memories depend so heavily on hearing them described? Dr Simms presents evidence that the human mind organizes memories in that way. Children whose mothers talk with them about the day’s activities before bedtime tend to remember more of the day’s special events than those whose mothers don’t. Talking about an event in this way helps a child to remember it. And learning to organize memories as a continuous story is the key to a permanent mental “autobiography (自传)” of important life events. Dr Simms suggests that we humans may be biologically programmed to turn our life experiences into a novel.
The key to creating this mental life story is language, says Dr Simms. “Children learn to talk about the past,” she says. “Talking to others about their short-term memories of the past leads to the establishment (建立) of long-term memories.” One way it does this is by helping a child to recognize that the retelling of an experience is just the experience itself, recreated in the form of words. The child learns that this “word-description” of an experience can then be stored in the memory and called back at any time. But a child’s language skills are usually not ready for this until the age of three or four, so they have no way to remember the earliest of their experiences.
( )28.What does the word “amnesia” in the second paragraph mean?
A.A mental life story. B.A childhood memory.
C.Inability to remember. D.Research on memory.
( )29.To form permanent memories of their experiences, what do young children need to do?
A.Talk about them with others.
B.Grow older than three or four.
C.Write a story in their own language.
D.Have a good relationship with their parents.
( )30.According to Dr Simms, the reason why children don’t form long-term memories before the age of three is that children .
A.can’t call back their experiences
B.have nowhere to store the memories
C.haven’t developed enough language skills
D.confuse the memory with the experience itself
( )31.Which of the following is the main idea of this passage?
A.Children need to discuss experiences with their parents.
B.Why can’t we remember the events of early childhood?
C.Adults can’t remember things as well as children.
D.What are memories of early childhood like?

Whether it’s biting your nails, or going to bed at 2 am, we all have those annoying habits we just can’t seem to kick. But have you ever wondered why these bad habits keep winning the battle against your best efforts and intentions?
Humans are creatures of habit, and our brains love doing things the same way. That’s why bad habits grow easily in the repeated actions like absent-mindedly reaching for a cigarette. Another reason why your bad habits keep winning is that they often provide a quick dopamine (多巴胺) fix, creating a desire that keeps you coming back for more. Think of the immediate relaxation from a cigarette or mindless snacking. The payoff for doing these things is quick and easy, which is exactly what makes them so hard to resist (抵抗).
So what can you do? There are two main problems with breaking bad habits. First, it’s not as enjoyable as giving in to them. When we try to resist, there’s no pleasure, no dopamine and therefore no encouragement to keep doing so. Rather than trying to remove them entirely, try to replace them with something healthier instead, or create a reward system for yourself to introduce the positive behaviour.
Second, a habit is often an unconscious (无意识的) action, so making it conscious changes it into a choice. You’d better start with an intentional action. Accepting your actions without judgement helps you stay apart from the emotions that keep you tied to those habits, like guilt, shame and dissatisfaction. This increased awareness will lead you to make more intentional choices and break the automatic cycle of bad habits.
Knowing the psychology behind why your bad habits keep winning hopefully gets you to make more conscious, positive choices, and change, and build the foundation for lasting behavioural change.
( )32.How does the writer introduce the topic?
A.By listing numbers. B.By raising a question.
C.By voicing an opinion. D.By explaining a reason.
( )33.What makes bad habits hard to break?
A.People’s desire to keep fit.
B.Quick and easy satisfaction.
C.Little knowledge of their effects.
D.People’s unwillingness to change.
( )34.What is a problem with breaking bad habits?
A.It is painful. B.It is fearful.
C.It takes much time. D.It calls for wisdom.
( )35.What can help kick a bad habit according to the passage?
A.Control feelings. B.Judge your actions.
C.Make active efforts. D.Turn to others for help.

Going solo to a wedding? Make yourself welcome
Taylor was nervous when walking into the wedding of her friend Gabrielle. She’s not alone. Attending a wedding by yourself can bring anxiety, especially for people who are single and feeling lonely. 36. Communicating with other people often makes us happier than we think it will. So, what do you do when you don’t know anybody at a wedding? Here are some suggestions.
Dress to impress
Wearing something that will make you feel comfortable and confident is key. 37. She said that it felt nice walking into that wedding knowing she felt really good within herself.
A smooth arrival
The first thing to do when you enter an event space is find the bathroom. Take a look in the mirror and get situated. Then, go to the bar and grab a glass of water or a drink. 38. After that, find a place to sit down. If there are no assigned seats, find an empty chair and ask the people who are there: “Are you expecting somebody? Do you mind if I sit here?” And if there are seating arrangements, it’s likely that the wedding couple seated you with people they felt you would get along with.
Conversation
39. By introducing yourself straightaway, you can at least speak to the person next to you. Wedding-related topics, including how you know the couple, are natural conversation starters.
After dinner and some chit-chat, there’s no harm in leaving if you don’t feel like you want to stay any longer on your own. 40.
A.But the effort and the presence are what count.
B.People are more willing to talk to you if you do that.
C.If a conversation doesn’t go as expected, don’t get discouraged.
D.You may want to make an excuse and stay home, but don’t do that.
E.Talking to people who are also waiting at the bar is a great way to start.
F.Introduce yourself to everyone at the table, whether there is arranged seating or not.
G.For her friend’s wedding, Taylor wore a floral dress and was feeling herself that day.

Henry, 61, has lived in south-eastern Bisbee for more than thirty years. Ten years ago, he and his wife lost their only child, a son. They have no grandchildren.
On December 16, 2018, Henry noticed a balloon’s string (绳子) was attached to a piece of paper.
“Jane,” it read on one side, in a child’s writing. Henry turned the paper over and found it was a Christmas list. He wondered whether he could find the girl who had sent this one.
It would be difficult, but Henry had a few clues (线索). About 20 miles to the south-west, just across the border, was the city of Nogales, Mexico, with a population of about a quarter million.
Based on the prevailing (盛行的) wind, he was quite sure that was where it had come from.
On December 19, 2018, he decided to send a private Facebook message to Radio XENY, an AM radio station based in Nogales.
To his surprise, someone from the station called him back right away.
The next morning, Henry awoke to another message from Radio XENY: they had found Jane, an eight-year-old girl. She and her family indeed lived in Nogales. Would they be willing to arrange a get-together at the radio station?
Henry went with his wife to the supermarket. They bought just about everything on Jane’s list. They also bought a few other toys, as they had learned that Jane had a younger sister, four-year-old Kate.

M: It’s a deal. If there weren’t the maths test tomorrow, we could definitely go to the gym right now.
W: Right. No more fun and games. Let me get my notebook.
Text 10
M: Good morning, students! It’s Jack here, the football coach here at Lincoln High. Principal Jones said I could make an announcement today. Of course, our big game is this weekend, and a lot of you—well, I hope all of you—are looking forward to it. Anyway, I want to tell you my favourite quote, one that I heard when I was in school.“Education is what remains after one has forgotten what one has learned in school.” This phrase is from a really smart guy, Albert Einstein. In my job, I work with athletes, but I always tell them not to forget their studies, too. Appreciate these days that you have to study and learn. That’s what school is about. Make the most of it. Have fun with your friends, be sociable at get-togethers, go to football games…But just be sure to get your homework done and listen and participate in class. You’re headed for bigger and better things. Some say college is a waste of time, but I don’t think so. There are things you learn in the process of learning that are priceless. There’s an education that goes on beyond what we read in textbooks and listen to in lectures. Life is one big educational process. And that’s what Einstein was trying to say. Have a great day!

根据第二段“The film The Last Repair Shop, directed by Bowers, pays attention to those people who have repaired more than 130,000 students’ instruments for free—work that has started in a L.A. shop since 1959.”
根据第一段“What is your earliest childhood memory? Can you remember learning to walk? Or talk? The first time you watched a television programme? Adults seldom call back events much earlier than the year or so before entering school, just as children younger than three or four seldom remember any specific, personal experiences.”及第二段中的“A variety of explanations have been suggested by psychologists (心理学家) for this ‘childhood amnesia’.”
根据第二段中的“According to Dr Simms, children need to learn to use someone else’s spoken description of their personal experiences in order to turn their own short-term, fast-forgotten impressions of them into long-term memories. In other words, children have to talk about their experiences and hear others talk about them. Without this verbal reinforcement (言语强化), children cannot form permanent memories of what they have experienced.” 故选A。
根据最后一段中的“Talking to others about their short-term memories of the past leads to the establishment (建立) of long-term memories.”及“But a child’s language skills are usually not ready for this until the age of three or four, so they have no way to remember the earliest of their experiences.”
由文章第一段“Whether it’s biting your nails, or going to bed at 2 am, we all have those annoying habits we just can’t seem to kick. But have you ever wondered why these bad habits keep winning the battle against your best efforts and intentions?”(无论是咬指甲,还是凌晨2点睡觉,我们都有一些我们似乎无法改掉的讨厌的习惯。
根据文章第二段中“Another reason why your bad habits keep winning is that they often provide a quick dopamine (多巴胺) fix, creating a desire that keeps you coming back for more. Think of the immediate relaxation from a cigarette or mindless snacking. The payoff for doing these things is quick and easy, which is exactly what makes them so hard to resist (抵抗).”(另一个你之所以难以摆脱坏习惯的原因是它们往往能提供快速的多巴胺的刺激,产生让你想要更多的欲望。想想吸烟或无意识吃零食带来的即时放松。做这些事情的回报是迅速且容易的,这正是它们如此难以抗拒的原因。)可知,坏习惯难以改掉的一个原因是它们能提供快速且容易的满足感。故选B。
34.A 细节理解题。由文章中第三段中“First, it’s not as enjoyable as giving in to them. When we try to resist, there’s no pleasure, no dopamine and therefore no encouragement to keep doing so.”(首先,这没有向它们屈服那么愉快。 故选A。
根据文章第三段中“Rather than trying to remove them entirely, try to replace them with something healthier instead, or create a reward system for yourself to introduce the positive behaviour.”(不要试图完全消除它们,试着用更健康的东西来代替它们,或者为自己创建一个奖励系统来引入积极的行为。)、第四段中“Accepting your actions without judgement helps you stay apart from the emotions that keep you tied to those habits, like guilt, shame and dissatisfaction. This increased awareness will lead you to make more intentional choices and break the automatic cycle of bad habits.”(不加评判地接受自己的行为可以帮助你远离那些让你与这些习惯联系在一起的情绪,比如内疚、羞耻和不满。 以及最后一段“Knowing the psychology behind why your bad habits keep winning hopefully gets you to make more conscious, positive choices, and change, and build the foundation for lasting behavioural change.”(了解坏习惯总是获胜背后的心理学有希望让你做出更有意识、更积极的选择和改变,为持久的行为改变奠定基础。)

38.E 上文“Then, go to the bar and grab a glass of water or a drink.”提到去吧台拿一杯水或饮料,下文“After that, find a place to sit down.”
39.F 下文“By introducing yourself straightaway, you can at least speak to the person next to you.”
上文“After dinner and some chit-chat, there’s no harm in leaving if you don’t feel like you want to stay any longer on your own.” 故选A。

One possible version:
Traditional Food Festival goes off with a bang!
Last week witnessed the Traditional Food Festival successfully launched in the dining hall of our school.
Among those exciting activities, what captured our heart most were the food stands set up by each class where students could make and present different kinds of traditional food. Besides, several cooking classes were arranged to teach us the recipes for delicious dishes such as dumplings and moon cakes.
The festival was very popular with us. Not only did we gain a deeper insight into traditional food, but also it involved us in cooking, further enhancing labour education.

One possible version:
Then the old couple drove for 45 minutes and reached Nogales. They arrived at the radio station. With presents in a big bag, they went upstairs and entered the office. There they were warmly greeted by two very excited little girls and their parents. “Are you Santa Claus?” They were confused by their appearances. Not wanting to spoil Santa Claus for the girls, who still believe, Henry and his wife told them they were “Santa’s helpers”. Their parents explained to Henry and his wife that Jane had been writing a letter to Santa and sending it by balloon for years.
This was the first time anyone had found the note. The two sisters’ eyes were wide open with both surprise and wonder. As each present was taken from the bag, their eyes got bigger and bigger with surprise. They danced excitedly, and cried gratefully, “Oh, this really did work!” Seeing their smiling faces and laughing eyes, the old couple realized it was a beautiful and quite healing experience for them. The two families became friends for life after that.
