John Arrillaga Sr, the pioneering Silicon Valley developer, was one of Stanford’s greatest benefactors (捐助者), leaving a legacy literally built into every corner of campus.
Over decades, Arrillaga’s generous donations and hands-on efforts reshaped Stanford’s campus. Though best known for athletic facilities, his true impact extended far beyond. As his longtime friend John Etchemendy noted, “Hundreds of projects bear his mark, yet rarely his name.” Nowhere was this quiet dedication clearer than in the reconstruction of Stanford Stadium. He personally funded and oversaw every detail — from selecting palm trees to designing seats to mapping walkways — yet refused to put his name on it.
Born into a working-class family, young Arrillaga couldn’t afford a proper suit for his high school graduation, having to borrow an ill-fitting jacket with sleeves that barely reached his wrists. He unexpectedly attended Stanford on a basketball scholarship, working multiple campus jobs to make ends meet. After playing professionally in Spain, he returned to develop Silicon Valley offices during the tech boom, becoming a millionaire. True to his humble beginnings, he started repaying Stanford almost immediately after graduation — beginning with modest athletic department gifts that grew into historic donations exceeding $250 million. Through his scholarship programs, he’s helped over 300 students facing similar financial challenges.
One day, a young donor moved by Arrillaga’s generosity shared how witnessing the selfless giving had profoundly shaped his devotion to charitable work. Realizing the ripple (涟漪) effect of his actions through others, Arrillaga months later made a rare exception: he permitted his name to appear on just one building — not for personal distinction, but as a nod to the power of leading by example.
While his benefaction helped communities across Silicon Valley through donations to police stations, libraries, and other public spaces, his strongest ties always remained with Stanford University.
4. What was Arrillaga’s key role in the stadium reconstruction?
A. A full-project supporter. B. A stadium co-investor.
C. A landscape designer. D. A building material producer.
5. What motivated Arrillaga’s lifelong commitment to Stanford?
A. The millionaire lifestyle experience. B. The desire for public recognition.
C. The fate-changing scholarship. D. The business investment strategies.
6. Why did Arrillaga finally allow his name to appear on one building?
A. To accept praise from the public. B. To show the ripple effect of athletics.
C. To fulfill a request from his university. D. To inspire more charitable actions.
7. What does Arrillaga’s experience show?
A. Wealth necessitates public display. B. Silent impact outweighs visible recognition.
C. Humble beginnings can lead to fortunes. D. Athletic excellence drives social change.
C
In the age of booming social media, many young people are used to “fast socializing”: adding hundreds of friends online, exchanging quick empty greetings, and joining endless meaningless group chats. Some young people even have thousands of online friends, but can’t find a single person to talk to when they are in a bad mood. But in recent years, more and more young people in China are turning to “slow socializing”, and voluntarily giving up those superficial and meaningless social connections.
Slow socializing means building deep, long-term relationships with a small group of like-minded people, instead of making a large number of one-sided “friends” online. It focuses on sincere and in-depth communication, rather than the number of online followers or likes on posts. For example, instead of sending a copied holiday greeting to hundreds of contacts, you have a long face-to-face talk with a close friend, or read a book together with a person who shares the same interest.
Many young people say fast socializing only brings them growing anxiety and a sense of emptiness. They have to spend a lot of time maintaining online contacts, but still feel lonely and helpless when they meet real trouble. On the contrary, slow socializing brings them a strong sense of security and belonging. They no longer pursue the number of friends on their social accounts, but focus on building real, heart-to-heart connections with people who truly understand them. A 2025 national survey found that over 68% of young people aged 16-25 prefer slow socializing, and most of them have better mental health than those who prefer fast socializing.
The writer holds that slow socializing is not refusing to make friends, but choosing the right way to connect with others. In a fast-paced society, it helps young people keep away from meaningless social chaos, and focus on the people and things that really matter.
8. What is the feature of slow socializing?
A. It focuses on sincere communication. B. It needs a lot of online followers.
C. It happens in holiday greetings. D. It requires a large friend circle.
9. What does the 2025 survey show?
A. Fast socializing makes people popular. B. Slow socializing benefits mental health.
C. Most young people hate online socializing. D. Less than half of people prefer slow socializing.
10. In Para 4, how does the writer mainly strengthen his argument?
A. By offering a detailed comparison between fast and slow socializing in daily life.
B. By quoting an expert opinion on the value of deep relationships.
C. By first correcting a possible misunderstanding and then stating the positive effects.
D. By providing statistical evidence from a recent national survey.
11. What is the main idea of the text?
A. The harm of social media to young people. B. The ways to reduce social anxiety.
C. The importance of sincere friendship. D. The rise and value of slow socializing.
D
Wheat, one of the world’s most important staple crops, is now being used to produce a vital medicine. Scientists at a biotechnology company in Zhengzhou, Henan province, are genetically modifying wheat plants to create human serum albumin (HSA), a crucial blood protein.
HSA is the most abundant protein in human blood. Produced by the liver, it plays an essential role in maintaining the proper balance of fluids between blood vessels and the surrounding tissues. A deficiency of this protein can lead to serious health conditions.
HSA is essential for treating burns, severe bleeding, liver disease, and certain cancers. Traditionally, it is obtained from donated human blood, but the supply is limited and the demand is increasing. In China, more than 50% of the HSA needed currently has to be imported. Dr. Li Wei, the lead researcher, told China Daily, “We introduce human genes into wheat plants, and as the plant grows, the HSA is produced and stored in the kernels (麦粒). We then harvest and process them to extract the protein." This innovative approach, known as "molecular farming," essentially turns wheat into a "protein factory.”
This technology offers significant advantages. It eliminates the risk of virus transmission associated with blood donations. It is also highly cost-effective because expanding production simply requires planting more wheat. Additionally, the dried wheat kernels can be stored for extended periods without losing the protein’s potency, and the genetic stability of wheat ensures consistent product quality.
The company’s progress has been promising. Early versions of their modified wheat produced 1.5 grams of HSA per kilogram of grain. Through improved technology, the yield has increased to 15 grams per kilogram. The company currently produces 500,000 doses of its wheat-based HSA drug each year and is building a new facility scheduled to open in 2026. When fully operational, it will produce 50 tons of HSA annually, potentially replacing a significant portion of China's HSA imports.
The success with wheat opens up possibilities for molecular farming using other crops. For example, researchers are now exploring ways to use corn to produce proteins for vaccines and other medical applications.
12. What can we learn about HSA from the text?
A. It speeds up the healing of burns.
B. It helps regulate fluid balance in the body.
C. It is produced by the heart to aid blood circulation.
D. It is transported by the liver to build body tissues.
13. What problem does molecular farming help address?
A. The decreasing production of wheat.
B. The safety risk of genetic modification.
C. The shortage of blood-based HSA supply.
D. The rising cost of importing medical equipment.
14. What can be inferred about the company’s future development?
A. It will stop importing HSA completely.
B. It will grow other genetically modified crops.
C. It will export its products to other countries.
D. It will reduce its production of HSA.
15. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. Wheat: A New Source of Life-saving Protein
B. Wheat: The Future of Chinese Agriculture
C. HSA: A Key to Modern Medicine
D. HSA: The Most Abundant Blood Protein

Make it social. For decades, social interaction has been tied to better health and a longer life. Find ways to be active with other people, like joining a run club, signing up for a group fitness class or trying a new sport through your local recreation center or park’s department. ____17____
Keep challenging yourself. Sports are mentally challenging too because they’re dynamic and goal-driven. But you can bring that mindset to any form of exercise. First, add some senses of freshness: a new route, a different gym routine or an unusual playing environment. Second, set clear, short-term goals that push you forward. ____18____
____19____ Common exercises like running and cycling are great ways to stay active, said Steven Moore, a metabolic epidemiologist at the National Cancer Institute. But pair them with upper-body work, including resistance training, so that you’re getting a full-body workout and building muscle.
Aim for consistency. The benefits of exercise only stick if you keep doing it as you get older, said Dr. I-Min Lee, an epidemiologist at the Harvard T. H. Chan School of Public Health. While tennis is sometimes called a “lifetime sport,” you don’t need to stick with one activity forever. ____20____ Ultimately, any and all physical activity improves long life. “Find something that works for you,” Dr. Lee said. “The bottom line is to move more.”
A. Exercise your whole body.
B. Try some stronger exercise.
C. So it’s worth finding a sport you enjoy.
D. This social element also helps with motivation and sense of responsibility.
E. It’s proved that brain training like reading or chess slows down aging effectively.
F. For example, you may gradually increase your walking time or add up the weight you lift.
G. Mixing things up keeps exercise fresh and easier to sustain, especially as your body changes.

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Eight-year-old Eli was starting his first day at Maplewood Elementary School. His mom had warned him a hundred times: “Never accept peanut snacks, and always tell others about your peanut allergy (过敏). Even a tiny bit could make your throat itch (痒) and cause breathing problems.”
But he hated feeling “different”. When Mrs. Lopez asked the class to share their “favorite snacks” for a get-to-know-you activity, the other kids talked about chocolate chip cookies and fruit cups. Eli just mumbled, “I like… apples.” He didn’t mention his allergy. He was afraid of being labeled “the weird (奇怪的) kid who couldn’t eat normal food.”
A month later, Mrs. Lopez asked everyone to bring a homemade snack to share for the end-of-September party. The desks were covered with fruit, juice, popcorn and cookies. Eli had brought some apple pies and watched the other kids laughing and enjoying their treats.
Lila, his deskmate, held a cookie out to him. “My grandma made it! Want a taste? It’s sweet and chewy!”
Eli’s heart raced. He shook his head rapidly and said, “No, thanks!” Lila’s smile faded a little, but she simply shrugged and walked away.
Eli let out a sigh of relief — then felt a twist of guilt. She was just being nice, and now she probably thought he was weird. Maybe this one had no peanuts, he hoped. “Lila, wait,” he called out. She turned back, surprised. Eli forced a smile. “Actually… I’ve changed my mind. Can I try one?” Lila’s face lit up. “Sure!” She handed him a cookie.
Eli took a small bite, chewing slowly. It tasted delicious. But after two bites, his throat began to tighten. His nose felt stuffy. Red spots spread across his face. Panic surged through him — were there peanuts in the cookie? He clutched his throat, gasping for air. His voice came out weak: “I… I can’t breathe…”
“Mrs. Lopez! Something’s wrong with Eli!” Lila called at the top of her voice.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150左右;
(2)请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Mrs. Lopez turned around and noticed Eli’s serious condition.

【答案】4. A 5. C 6. D 7. B

Sports Help Build a Healthier and Longer Life
Building new skills and challenging your brain are generally good for healthy aging. ____16____ When you decide to get moving, keep these tips for a long life in mind.

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】例文①
Should We Make Detailed Travel Plans Before Trips?
When it comes to traveling, I firmly believe it is necessary to make thorough travel plans before setting off.
To begin with, detailed preparations ensure our safety. We can look up local weather, transport and dangerous areas ahead of time to stay away from risks. Besides, learning about local traditions helps us behave politely and avoid cultural misunderstandings. Moreover, planning budgets and attractions saves plenty of time and money. Without detailed plans, we may waste hours finding hotels or getting tickets.
All in all, proper pre-trip research brings us a safer, smoother and more rewarding journey.
例文②
Should We Make Detailed Travel Plans Before Trips?
When it comes to traveling, I think there is no need to make thorough travel plans before travelling.
For one thing, over-detailed schedules take away the joy of surprise. If every hour is arranged, we will miss unexpected beautiful scenery or warm encounters with locals. For another, tight plans bring huge pressure. Travelling is meant to relax ourselves, not rush from one spot to another according to a rigid timetable. Too many detailed plans limit our freedom. We can wander freely, adjust our route anytime and feel the real charm of travelling.
In short, light preparation leaves room for wonderful random experiences.

【答案】范文
Mrs. Lopez turned around and noticed Eli’s serious condition. She rushed over and knelt beside him. “Eli, peanut allergy?” Eli couldn’t speak — but nodded weakly, his face unnaturally red. Mrs. Lopez eased him into a sitting position and loosened his collar to ensure easy breathing. Then, she calmed the panicked crowd and dialed the emergency number. Squeezing Eli’s trembling hand, she kept her voice calm: “Stay with me, Eli. Help is on the way.” Lila stood rooted to the spot, guilt and confusion swirling in her tearful eyes. Other classmates stared anxiously, their faces pale with worry. Within minutes, the paramedics arrived and rushed Eli to the nearest hospital.
Two weeks later, the class held a “Safe Snack Party” to celebrate Eli’s return. The desks were covered with fruit cups, apple pies and cookies, each labeled with a clear ingredient card. On the blackboard, Mrs. Lopez had written in bright letters: “Ask first. Share safely. Care for everyone.” Lila approached Eli with a heart-shaped cookie and said softly, “My grandma helped me make this. We double-checked the ingredients.” Eli took the cookie with a grateful smile. He then turned to face the class and told them about his allergy, which was greeted by warm smiles and supportive nods. Being different no longer made him feel alone — it made him feel protected, understood and truly included.
