Tucker stood by the back door, his eyes fixed on the winter sky:
crystal blue and not a single cloud. His breath made steamy circles on the
chilled glass window."I don't think today's the day,Tucker."His father
walked up beside him and looked outside."It has to snow something,
doesn't it,Dad?"asked Tucker,a hint of regret in his voice as he surveyed
the barren landscape."Sure, boy,"his father stroked his fingers through
Tucker's hair and strode off toward the basement door.
Tucker's gaze wandered beyond the backyard of his family's new
home.Just beyond a cluster of prickly pine trees, the flat ground pushed
upward into a steep and empty hillside.Dad's promise of a perfect sledding
(spot echoed in his ears, painting vivid pictures of exhilarating
rides down the hill, faster and more thrilling than anything he'd experienced
in the city.
Sledding.Tucker's brand-new sled rested in the corner of his room,
sandwiched between his dresser(梳妆台)and train table. It was perfect:
bright blue with red and orange flames racing up its sides.Tucker loved the
feel of the cool, smooth plastic yellow rope.He was sure it would be
superfast.If only it would snow.
Determined to find some way to make the most of this snowless day,
Tucker went down to the basement where he found his father waist-deep in
a sea of flattened cardboard boxes."Can you play chess with me,Dad?"
Tucker pleaded. His father looked over the wall of boxes."I promised your
mom I'd get all these boxes broken down and ready for recycling. It won't
take long,Tucker. In a little while,we'll find something fun to do,I
promise."But Tucker's eyes had already lit up with a new found idea.As
he caught sight of the duct tape(强力防水胶带)next to his father and the
ramp()formed by the cardboard boxes by accident, inspiration struck.

I sat down at one of the tables in the dinning hall to eat my lunch and
made my usual call to my dad.
“Hi,Tina!”He answered the phone as he always did.
“Hi,Dad!How is your day going?”I inquired.
"Same, same.Just another day at the shop.Brake job and oil change
now.I'm repairing a sports car.Have an alternator(交流发电机)to work
on next.How about you?"
"Same,just another day.Glad it's Friday.Definitely ready for the
weekend,I said with relief.Only a few more hours and we would have an
entire weekend to spend together.
“Oh,yeah.I got you a present from work today!”he said, with great
excitement in his voice.
“Oh,really?”

"Yes!I just know you will love it.I can't wait to see you in a few
hours,"he said excitedly on the other end of the phone."Excited to see you
soon!”I said before we hung up..
When I got home,my dad immediately presented the gift he had gotten
me from work.I was excited yet curious at the same time;after all,my dad
was a mechanic. What kind of gift would he have gotten for me from one of
his tool boxes? He had me cover my eyes, and when I opened them,he
handed me a black bag.I opened it and did not understand what was inside.
“Uh,what is it?”
“It's a jumper(跨接线)box!”he said.“You can keep it in your car.If
your battery ever dies, you don't need another car to start yours. This will
jump(跨接引线启动)your battery for you,all by itself!”He was
explaining to me how it worked, just like a child showing me a new toy at
Christmas.“Come on outside,.and I will show you how it works!”He went
out of the door as the telephone rang."I'll be right out!"I called out the
door to him as he unlocked the car,and I ran to answer the phone. It was
my mother.

I complained to my mother about the so-called gift.
My mum surprised me with her wisdom.
I was four years old in 1993,when my family emigrated (from
the United Arab Emirates to Toronto.Young enough to be changed by my
new home, but old enough to know I was different from everyone around
me.I was the only Arab and only Muslim in my junior kindergarten class.
Beyond those obvious differences,Canadian life proved to be quite distinct
in other ways. And I discovered another surprise that December.
Overnight, everything was suddenly covered in red and green. My
classmates talked excitedly about cookies and what gifts they'd asked Santa
for that Christmas. At some point,I must have asked myself,"What is
Christmas?"There's nothing quite like it in the Muslim world. The closest
comparison might be Eidal-Adha,which translates from Arabic to"Festival
of sacrifice".While both holidays show the same spirit of sharing with the
less fortunate and spending time with loved ones,Eid meant new clothes
and a family dinner, and that was about it.No tree decorated with
ornaments(装饰物),and no gifts covered in wrapping paper.
Christmas was completely foreign to me,but then my parents
unexpectedly informed me that Santa would be paying us a visit on
Christmas Eve."But aren't we Muslim?"I asked.
"Yes,but Santa loves all children equally and gets them all gifts,"my
mother replied.
So on that first Christmas Eve in Canada, she hung oversized red and
white stockings, each one customized with our names, off our bedposts.I
have a distinct memory of the restless expectation that kept me awake long
after bedtime and my joy when I got up on Christmas morning to find my
stocking filled with gifts.
Still in my pyjamas(睡衣),I ran over to the kitchen to tell my parents
that Santa had indeed visited us last night.I asked if they'd seen him,and
Mom said,“Of course!”Mom offered Santa a cup of coffee,as is the Arab
custom when hosting guests. He needed the energy for the long night
ahead,she told me.
When I returned to school after the holidays,I had a story to share
with my classmates.Santa had visited me too!I could show off gifts while
other kids showed off theirs.

My parents kept our Christmas tradition going for years, until I was
too old to believe in Santa anymore.
As an adult,I've come to realize creating a sense of belonging is joining
in traditions.

It was freezing!Temperature was zero degree!
During patrolling(巡逻),a group of soldiers were passing through a
mountainous path.Their commander was also with them. The way became
difficult and dark. The soldiers started to feel tired and difficult to continue
walking down the path.
Just a little ahead, they saw a tea shop, but when they reached there,
they saw it was closed.Every soldier looked at the commander with teary
eyes.
The commander understood everyone wanted to have a rest.So he
ordered that they should rest there for some time.
Everyone sat there.Just then one of them said,"If we could get a cup
of tea in this cold day,we could feel a little relieved."The commander
understood that his soldiers wanted to drink tea so he said,"But the shop is
locked,how can we drink tea?"

And then a soldier said,"Sir,let's break the lock.After all,we
protect these people. One cup of tea...at least this is our right. It isn't
like we steal things from the shop.We just want to drink a cup of tea.
Saying this, the soldier broke the lock of that tea shop.
Everyone drank tea,ate biscuits and continued their patrolling, but
before leaving, the commander left two notes of RS()500 on the table
of that tea shop.
In the next morning, when the shop owner saw that the lock of his tea
shop was broken,he cried and said,"Oh,God!My child is sick.I don't
even have money for his treatment and now my shop got robbed!"Then he
went inside nervously and saw that all stuff()was there except for
some biscuit packets.Worried as he sat on the table,he saw two notes of
RS 500 on it.Seeing the money,he immediately jumped with joy,but still
not knowing what had happened and where the money was from.

The next day, when the troops returned along the same road, they
stopped at the same tea shop to drink tea.
Hearing this, everyone's eyes were fixed on the shopkeeper. With

“Dad,can I have some cardboard boxes?”Tucker asked.“Sure,if you clean up when you're done,”
answered Dad."And some duct tape,too?"Tucker continued.His father smiled,grabbed the duct tape,and
tossed it to Tucker.Despite the cold,he was sweating from carrying a mountain of cardboard into the backyard.
Happily,he lined the flat brown boxes, one after the other,up the hillside, and taped the undersides together
until they had formed a ramp.It ran from the tiptop of the sledding hill, past the pine trees, and down to the
middle of the backyard.
Tucker held the sled in place.Gripping the steering rope, and moving his feet into position,Tucker took a
deep, frosty breath. He let out a scream as the sled raced down the slope, faster and faster. It came to a sudden
stop in the crunchy grass.Tucker flew through the air and landed in a giggly heap.He jumped to his feet and
raced back up the hill with his sled again and again. When the last of the daylight finally faded away,he lay back
in his sled and gazed up at the darkening sky. Then he stuck out his tongue to catch the first thick, white flake
swirling down from above. And he smiled.

One possible version:
I complained to my mother about the so-called gift.I told her that my dad gave me a jumper box as a gift.
"You don't sound really excited about it,"my mother said."Well,I don't really get it.It's just a car thing,"I
responded."This is his way of taking care of you, said my mother."This is a gift to give him a little peace of
mind in making sure you are safe when he can't be with you.
My mum surprised me with her wisdom.I told her that I would call her back because I needed to learn about
my gift.I went outside to join my dad.He started showing me how to use the battery pack and I listened
carefully. When the teaching was over,I gave him the biggest hug."Thank you so much,Dad.This is the best
gift ever!"From this gift,I realized that no one shows love exactly the same way,but as long as they love you,
it will be the best.

One possible version:
My parents kept our Christmas tradition going for years, until I was too old to believe in Santa anymore.I
never asked them why they went through all that bother, but I suspect they did it so we could feel like we
belonged in our new country.Creating a sense of belonging is an important thing. It influences physical and
mental health. But you can't force yourself to belong somewhere. That belonging comes from a change within
you, from a willingness to be part of something.
As an adult,I've come to realize creating a sense of belonging is joining in traditions. The specifics of
Christmas, from Jesus to Santa, are all irrelevant in a sense. What matters is that Christmas gives us an excuse
to bring people together to share in the love that unites us.So perhaps, when I have kids of my own one day,I'll
revive the family tradition and invite Santa over for a cup of coffee before he leaves my kids something special in
their stockings.

The next day, when the troops returned along the same road, they stopped at the same tea shop to drink
tea.The shopkeeper gave them tea while singing a song. The soldiers thought they had had a great feast here the
night before but he looked happy as if nothing had happened. Then, one soldier asked,"Uncle, you seem very
happy. What's the matter?"The shopkeeper said with a smile,"What can I tell, sir?Last night God came into
my shop.”
Hearing this, everyone's eyes were fixed on the shopkeeper. With great surprise,a soldier asked,"God?"
"Yes!"replied the shopkeeper. Then he said,"My son was ill for some days and I didn't have money to pay for
his treatment. But this morning when entering my shop,I was shocked to find its lock was broken.I got worried
and thought it was robbed.Yet when seeing two notes of RS 500,I thought it must be God that came into my
shop, drank tea,ate biscuits and left the money on the table."Hearing this, all soldiers looked towards the
commander and understood everything. Finally, everyone finished their tea and continued on their way.
