When you think about your relationship with your parents, how would you describe it? Are you satisfied with it, or would you wish for something more? For many, the relationship with their parents is not perfect, and it may even feel distant (疏远的).
I once hoped that my parents would be my best friends—people I could talk to openly, share my thoughts with, and have meaningful discussions with. However, the reality was very different. Our relationship was often filled with shouting and misunderstandings. We hardly had calm, meaningful conversations. Instead, there were months when we didn’t talk at all because there was nothing to say.
For many years, from my teenage years to my late twenties, this was my reality. But things began to change when I decided to make an effort (努力) to improve the relationship. Now, at 30, my relationship with my parents has improved greatly. We communicate openly, without anger, and show concern for each other in a way that feels natural.
Improving the relationship with your parents takes time. It is not a quick fix. When I first started, my efforts and apology(道歉) seemed pointless. For example, when I tried to hold my mom into my arms, she pushed me away. My dad didn’t give me a love sign. But I didn’t give up. I realized that improving a relationship is not about fixing a single argument; it’s about repairing years of misunderstandings and miscommunications.
To truly improve your relationship with your parents, understand that it’s a long journey. It will not happen overnight, and you may not see results immediately. In my case, it took years of efforts. I had to show my parents that I had changed, not through words, but through actions. They slowly began to react (做出回应), but the process was slow and required patience.
So, if you’re facing problems with your parents, remember that it’s normal. Start by seeing the situation as a long journey. It may not be easy, but if you keep trying and give it time, your relationship can get better. Be patient and stick to the process.
24.What was the author’s early relationship with her parents like?
A.Terrible. B.Peaceful. C.Special. D.Close.
25.How did the author’s parents first react to her efforts?
A.They accepted them warmly. B.They paid little attention to them.
C.They were surprised and moved. D.They apologized for their misunderstandings.
26.What may the author consider most important in improving the parent-child relationship?
A.Making apologies. B.Open conversations.
C.Understanding each other. D.Long-term efforts and patience.
27.Why does the author write the text?
A.To look back on the past. B.To give thanks to her parents.
C.To offer suggestions to others. D.To describe a common social problem.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has greatly sped up how long it takes to sort, label and analyze (分析) animal sounds — as well as to figure out which aspects of those sounds might carry meaning. One day we’ll be able to use AI to build a chat box that translates complex (复杂的) animal sounds into human language. Project CETI is just one organization working toward this goal.
“AI could eventually get us to the point where we understand animals, but that’s hard to deal with and long-term,” says Karen Bakker, a researcher at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada. “Some species have been on the planet longer than humans. Some species could go extinct before we figure out their language,” Bakker adds. “Besides, the idea of walking around with an animal translator may seem cool, but many animals might not be interested in chatting.”
“Why would a bat want to speak to you?” she asks. What interests her is what we can learn from how bats and other creatures talk amongst each other. “We should listen to nature and ask the animals’ requirements in order to better protect them,” she argues. For example, a system set up to record whales or elephants can also track their locations. This can help our boats avoid whales or protect elephants from poachers (偷猎者).
Protection is one goal driving Project CETI. “If we understand sperm whales better, we will be better at understanding what’s troubling them,” says Gašper Beguš, a linguist at the University of California, Berkeley. Learning that a species has something very similar to language or culture could also inspire people to work harder to protect it.
When we protect an animal that has some version of language or culture, we’re not simply protecting nature and we’re also saving a way of life. Marine biologist Denise Herzing says that animals are supposed to have a healthy environment so that their cultures can develop well.
28. What can we infer from the first paragraph?
A. We will find ways to talk with animals.
B. We can share our language with animals.
C. We can tell the complex animal behavior.
D. We need conduct more research on animals.
29. What does Bakker think of fully understanding animals’ language?
A. Costly. B. Difficult. C. Harmful. D. Worthless.
30. How can we protect the animals effectively according to paragraph 3?
A. By learning about their needs. B. By setting up shelters for them.
C. By mapping out their locations. D. By living peacefully with them.
31. Which statement would Herzing probably agree with?
A. Protecting nature means saving ourselves.
B. Animal translators should be created for protection.
C. Animals’ culture requires a healthy natural world to develop.
D. Short-term and long-term goals for conservation need to be set.

One of the greatest killers in the Western world is heart disease. The death rate from the disease has been increasing at an alarming speed for the past thirty years. Today in Britain, for example, about four hundred people a day die of heart disease. Medical experts know that people can reduce their chances of getting heart disease by exercising regularly, by not smoking, by changing their diets, and by paying more attention to reducing stress in their work.
However, Western healthcare systems are still not paying enough attention to the prevention of the disease. There is a need for more programs to educate the public about the causes and prevention of heart disease. Instead of supporting such programs, however, the U. S. healthcare system is spending large sums of money on the surgical (外科的) treatment of the disease after it develops. This emphasis (强调) on treatment clearly has something to do with the technological advances that have taken place in the past ten to fifteen years. In this time, modern technology has enabled doctors to develop new surgical techniques. Many operations that were considered impossible or too risky a few years ago are now performed every day in U. S. hospitals. The result has been a huge increase in heart surgery.
Although there is no doubt that heart surgery can help a large number of people, some people point out that the emphasis on the surgical treatment of the disease has three clear disadvantages. First, it attracts interest and money away from the question of prevention. Second, it causes the costs of general hospital care to rise. After hospitals buy the expensive equipment that is necessary for modern heart surgery, they must try to recover the money they have spent. To do this, they raise costs for all their patients, not just those patients whose treatment requires the equipment. The third disadvantage is that doctors are encouraged to perform surgery even on patients for whom an operation is unnecessary —because the equipment and expert skills are there. A government office recently stated that major heart surgery was often performed even though its chances of success were low. In one type of heart surgery, for example, only 15% of patients improved their conditions after the surgery. However, more than 100,000 of these operations are performed in the United States every year.
32. What effect has modern technology had on medicine?
A. It has reduced the costs of medical treatment.
B. It has encouraged doctors to do more heart surgery.
C. It has educated people about the prevention of heart disease.
D. It has drawn public attention to the cause of the heart disease.
33. Which of the following statement would the author probably agree with?
A. More money should be spent on the prevention of heart disease.
B. Heart surgery has helped most patients improve their conditions.
C. Modern technology has made heart surgery more risky than before.
D. The public have known a great deal about the causes of heart disease.
34. What does the underlined word “recover” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Burn up. B. Take in. C. Settle for. D. Get back.
35. Which would be the best title for the passage?
A. The Greatest Killer in the West. B. Heart Surgery: Benefits and Risks.
C. New Technology and Heart Surgery. D. Heart Disease: Treatment or Prevention?

Days of January were passing and every girl of the girls’ school was very happy as the selections for plays(戏剧) and dances for the annual function were started.
Sneha’s class teacher, Pravina, asked Sneha, her favorite student, to play the leading character in a play. Because she was never allowed to play a male character, Sneha jumped with joy, but suddenly she became so serious about the costumes (戏服).
“How many times I have to tell you not to participate in plays and dances! Can’t you understand that we can’t buy or borrow the costly costume? You can take part in debates, quizes, or essay competitions in which you don’t have to spend money and you can enrich your knowledge,” her mother said angrily when Sneha told her about it.
The reason behind all this was their financial condition. Sneha always had an idea about it in her home and she was mature enough to say NO to any money demanding condition. This time, however, the desire of fame and the excitement of the activity were overcoming her fear.
Sneha went in her room hiding her sadness deep in her heart. She was so nervous about what was going to happen when she would tell Pravina about leaving the play. Would she warn her not to allow her in any competition? Now it was clear that she had to leave the play.
The next day, downhearted Sneha acted like nothing had happened and got ready for school. Her mom ordered her to say NO for the play.
Sneha always loved Pravina because whenever there was a play or dance, the girls did not need to be worried about anything related with money. She would find a way to help. But Sneha didn’t want to tell her the truth.
Paragraph l:
Sneha went to the teacher,“I don’t want to take part in the play and I’m leaving.”

Paragraph 2:
Pravina stood patiently, waiting for the performance to begin.
