Therefore, the organisers have done well to ensure there are changing rooms and showers available for all runners. racebest. com ● Winter Solstice Strider, 8 December Dig that head flashlight out of the messy drawer for this after-dark run or walk for a good cause. You have a 5K route, which winds through the forest at the St Ives Estate. The route is far from flat and will almost certainly be muddy in places, so make sure your batteries are well charged in case there are emergencies. sueryder. org ● The Christmas Charity Run, 21 December This event is run by a most environmentally conscious organiser in the country, and is therefore only open to local runners to reduce car travel. Another great feature is that £7. 50 of the £10 entry fee goes straight to a local charity that supports people with cancer, making this one of the most positive-impact events that you could possibly find. eventrac. co. uk ● Mapledurham 10& Half, 29 December Mapledurham events are always well organised and, with unpleasant weather likely, you'll have to deal with some mud on the various uphills and downhills on whichever of the 10K, 10-mile or half-marathon courses you choose. The organisers have prioritised finding a good route over precise measurements, so all three races have a rather loose relationship with their stated distance. mstevents. co. uk 21. Which website offers information for night run participants? A. sueryder. org B. racebest. com C. eventrac. co. uk D. mstevents. co. uk 22. What makes the Mapledurham events unique? A. Eco-friendly goals. B. Flexible race distances. C. Strong charity focus. D. Muddy running courses. 23. Which column of a magazine is the text probably from? A. Tech Trends. B. Athlete Profiles. C. News Insight. D. Race Guide. B On a spring day, Guinness World Records held a ceremony in Bournemouth to award local lifeguard Chris Lewis the title. Lewis, 74, began working at the Dorset resort when he was 16. “It’s the best job in the world,” he said. “You’re working and helping people. What could be better?” His colleagues were just half his age. But he is still fighting fit. Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) lifeguards must complete a 400m pool swim in under 7.5 minutes. They have to do a 25m pool swim underwater and a 25-metre surface swim consecutively in under 50 seconds and run 200m along the beach in under 40 seconds. The tests are still reasonably comfortable for Lewis. All winter he has been doing 3,000 metres of sea swimming each month. Lewis’s adventure began in 1965 when a police officer spotted that he was a keen swimmer and suggested he get his lifesaving badges. The following year he began volunteering as a lifeguard at the age of 16. Then he became part of the RNLI lifeguards in 2001 and began providing beach patrols for local authorities. Now the RNLI patrols more than 240 beaches across the UK. Lewis laughed when asked if he had seen many changes. “The RNLI’s equipment in 2024 includes jetskis, rescue boats and quad bikes. When I started, we had a T-shirt, swimming trunks, a swimming hat, a coat if you were lucky and a rescue tube. It was really very different.” His most memorable rescue took place in 2010 when three children got into trouble while swimming. There was a combination of wind and a lively spring tide. One of them was being hurled into a rock with severe cuts. The other two were being “knocked around” by the waves. Lewis swam out just with a rescue tube but managed to get all three back. Over the years, he has performed hundreds of rescues. He says giving advice that prevents people getting into trouble is preferable to carrying out rescues. “I would love to go through the whole of summer without having to rescue anybody.” 24. Why is the training of RNLI mentioned? A. To explain the importance of swimming skills. B. To stress Lewis’s efforts and capacity. C. To show demands of being a safeguard. D. To describe the test process of fitness swimming 25. What made Lewis begin his life-saving career? A. His voluntary experience. B. His passion for swimming. C. An invitation from RNLI. D. A police officer’s suggestion. 26. What can be inferred from Lewis’s words in Paragraph 4? A. RNLI cares for the safety of lifeguards. B. RNLI currently needs more lifeguards. C. Lifeguard work was not easy in the past. D. The former lifeguards were more skilled. 27. Which of the following best describes Lewis? A. Devoted and caring. B. Selfless and honest. C. Determined and humorous. D. Generous and ambitious. C What should you do if your child steals another kid’s toy in a playdate or gets pushed by another kid at the park? These are common behaviors for preschoolers who are still learning how to act around others and regulate their emotions. But for many parents, these moments are a struggle to manage. “We feel on the spot when we’re in public,” says Celina Benavides, a developmental psychologist at Oxnard College in California. “We feel the judgmental eyes from other people, and that can shape how we parent and how children might respond to us.” So, how should parents address their kids’ challenging behaviors in public? Benavides explains the reason why sometimes young children suffer meltdown is that they are stuck in a tough situation for them to handle properly. So try to distract them by stepping in timely and offering help they need. For example, at a park, a boy comes up behind your 2-year-old daughter and hits her on the back of the head so that he can climb the stairs first, but his parents don’t say anything or apologize. What would you do? “It’s always OK to simply remove your child from situations that don’t feel safe. But if you choose to engage, focus first on the harmed child. Then, move on to the child doing the harm, producing a situation to help the children repair the relationship in a healthy way.” says Benavides. Assuming your 18-month-old son is at a children’s party. He grabs an older child’s shirt, and then takes a truck toy from his hand! The other child starts crying. Your son looks on, confused. Should the parents get involved in it? “Actually, parents’ role is to help the kid figure out how to resolve the dilemma on his own.” Benavides says. He also recommends pausing before jumping in, and if you do need to participate, label what you’re seeing and ask questions, like “What if we try taking turns?” This allows children to come up with ideas themselves. 28. Why is parenting in public difficult? A. The kids’ misbehaviors are tolerated. B. It’s hard to regulate parents’ emotions. C. Parents feel stressed by others’ judgement. D. Adults lack communication skills with kids. 29. What does the underlined word “meltdown” in paragraph 2 mean? A. Constant fear. B. Emotional outbursts. C. Physical problems. D. Temporary setbacks. 30. What is suggested by Benavides when kids are in a dilemma? A. Blaming the child doing harm. B. Presenting children with choices. C. Standing by without engagement. D. Getting kids away from the spot. 31. What does the text mainly talk about? A. How to parent sensibly in public. B. How to construct family relations. C. How to develop kids’ good manners. D. How to get on well with other parents. D How fast do you listen? Hollywood actor Glen Powell likes 1x listening speed, saying, “I want to hear people talk at a normal human rate,” while American comedian Bowen Yang believes 1.8x is the perfect pace. Their debate went viral earlier this year in an advertisement for a streaming platform, which was criticized for suggesting that people who listen quickly are unusual. The controversy reflects a broader change in how people consume digital media. Surveys support this observation. A survey showed that 31% of Americans aged 18-29 listen faster than 1x, compared with only 8% of those over 45. To meet this demand, many platforms such as Apple, Spotify, Netflix and YouTube now provide fast playback (播放) options. Some even allow speeds up to 4x for premium users. The appeal is easy to understand: faster playback can save a large amount of time. YouTube once reported that its viewers together saved more than 900 years per day thanks to this feature. For busy students and workers, such efficiency is attractive. But does speeding affect comprehension? The average person speaks at a rate of about 150 words per minute, but most brains are capable of processing information faster than that, says Marcus Pearce, a cognitive scientist at Queen Mary University of London. A recent meta-analysis led by academics at the University of Waterloo in Canada found that up to 1.5x there was not much of a difference in performance, although scores started to decrease noticeably as playback speeds approached or exceeded 2x. The practice has also raised different opinions. From the platforms’ perspective, faster speeds mean users consume more content, which increases advertising income. But many performers argue that something artistic is lost. Reading aloud involves pacing, tone and pause, and rushing may damage the quality of a performance. Imagine the famous monologues (独白) in Hamlet delivered at double speed — much of the meaning would disappear. Despite the disagreements, fast playback has become part of daily life for many people. For them, to speed or not to speed is no longer a real question. 32. What can be learned about the controversy from paragraph 1? A. An advertisement is well received. B. People prefer different listening speeds. C. Digital media is a topic of much debate. D. Streaming platforms are part of daily life. 33. Why did many platforms introduce faster playback options? A. To attract more elderly listeners. B. To respond to the users’ needs. C. To help people’s comprehension. D. To cut content production costs. 34. What is the author’s purpose in mentioning Hamlet? A. To stress fast speed harms art. B. To show people favor classic works. C. To prove actors dislike fast playback. D. To suggest modern audiences lack patience. 35. What can be a suitable title for the text? A. The need for fast playback B. The argument over an advertisement C. Higher speed, more profit D. C. B 25. D 26. C 27. 根据第二段中“Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) lifeguards must complete a 400m pool swim in under 7.5 minutes. They have to do a 25m pool swim underwater and a 25-metre surface swim consecutively in under 50 seconds and run 200m along the beach in under 40 seconds. The tests are still reasonably comfortable for Lewis. (皇家国家救生艇协会(RNLI)的救生员必须在7.5分钟内游完400米泳池。他们必须在50秒内完成25米的水下游泳和25米的水面游泳,并在40秒内沿着海滩跑200米。这些测试对Lewis来说还算轻松。)”和“All winter he has been doing 3,000 metres of sea swimming each month. (整个冬天,他每个月都要进行3000米的海游。)”可知,此处提到RNLI的训练是为了强调Lewis的努力和能力,尽管他已经74岁,但仍然能够轻松完成这些训练。故选B项。 【25题详解】 细节理解题。根据第三段中“Lewis’s adventure began in 1965 when a police officer spotted that he was a keen swimmer and suggested he get his lifesaving badges. (Lewis的冒险始于1965年,当时一名警察发现他是一名游泳爱好者,并建议他获得救生徽章。)”可知,是一名警察的建议让Lewis开始了他的救生生涯。故选D项。 【26题详解】 推理判断题。根据第四段中Lewis的话“The RNLI’s equipment in 2024 includes jetskis, rescue boats and quad bikes. When I started, we had a T-shirt, swimming trunks, a swimming hat, a coat if you were lucky and a rescue tube. It was really very different. (2024年,RNLI的装备包括水上摩托、救生艇和四轮摩托车。当我开始的时候,我们只有一件T恤、游泳裤、游泳帽,如果你幸运的话还有一件外套和一个救生圈。这真的很不一样。)”可知,Lewis通过对比现在的装备和他开始时的装备,暗示了过去的救生工作并不容易,因为装备非常简陋。故选C项。 【27题详解】 推理判断题。根据第一段中Lewis的话“It’s the best job in the world,” he said. “You’re working and helping people. What could be better? ( 他说:“这是世界上最好的工作。你在工作,同时在帮助别人。还有什么比这更好的呢?”)”以及最后一段中“Over the years, he has performed hundreds of rescues. He says giving advice that prevents people getting into trouble is preferable to carrying out rescues. (多年来,他进行了数百次救援。他说,给出防止人们陷入困境的建议比进行救援更好。)”可知,Lewis非常热爱他的救生工作,致力于帮助他人,并且非常关心他人的安全。因此,用“Devoted and caring (全心全意且关爱他人)”来形容他最恰当。故选A项。 C What should you do if your child steals another kid’s toy in a playdate or gets pushed by another kid at the park? C 29. B 30. C 31. 根据第二段关键句““We feel on the spot when we’re in public,” says Celina Benavides, a developmental psychologist at Oxnard College in California. “We feel the judgmental eyes from other people, and that can shape how we parent and how children might respond to us.”(加州奥克斯纳德学院的发展心理学家Celina Benavides说:“当我们在公共场合时,我们会感到很尴尬”。“我们能感受到别人评判性的眼光,这会影响我们为人父母的方式以及孩子对我们的反应。”)”可知,在公共场合,家长会感受到别人评判性的眼光,这会影响他们为人父母的方式。由此可知,在公共场合为人父母很难,因为父母因他人的评判而感到压力。故选C项。 【29题详解】 词义猜测题。根据画线单词所在句“they are stuck in a tough situation for them to handle properly. (他们陷入了困境,需要妥善处理)”可知,幼儿在陷入了困境是会情绪爆发的。由此可知,画线单词“Emotional outbursts”意为“情绪爆发”。故选B项。 【30题详解】 推理判断题。根据最后一段关键句““Actually, parents’ role is to help the kid figure out how to resolve the dilemma on his own.” Benavides says. He also recommends pausing before jumping in, and if you do need to participate, label what you’re seeing and ask questions, like “What if we try taking turns?” This allows children to come up with ideas themselves. 通读全文,结合第二段关键句“We feel the judgmental eyes from other people, and that can shape how we parent and how children might respond to us. (我们能感受到别人评判性的眼光,这会影响我们为人父母的方式以及孩子对我们的反应。)”和“So, how should parents address their kids’ challenging behaviors in public? (那么,父母应该如何应对孩子在公共场合的挑战性行为呢?)”可知,在公共场合,家长会感受到别人评判性的眼光,这影响了他们为人父母的方式。本文主要介绍了父母应该如何应对孩子在公共场合的挑战性行为。由此可知,本文主要介绍了如何在公共场合理智地为人父母。故选A项。 D How fast do you listen? Speedier streaming, less meaning 【答案】32. B 33. B 34. A 35. 根据第一段“How fast do you listen? Hollywood actor Glen Powell likes 1x listening speed, saying, “I want to hear people talk at a normal human rate,” while American comedian Bowen Yang believes 1.8x is the perfect pace. Their debate went viral earlier this year in an advertisement for a streaming platform, which was criticized for suggesting that people who listen quickly are unusual. The controversy reflects a broader change in how people consume digital media.(你听的速度有多快? 根据第二段“Surveys support this observation. A survey showed that 31% of Americans aged 18-29 listen faster than 1x, compared with only 8% of those over 45. To meet this demand, many platforms such as Apple, Spotify, Netflix and YouTube now provide fast playback (播放) options. Some even allow speeds up to 4x for premium users.(调查结果也证实了这一观点。一项调查显示,18至29岁的美国人中有31%的用户播放速度超过1倍,而45岁以上的用户中这一比例仅为 8%。为了满足这一需求,像苹果、Spotify、Netflix 和YouTube这样的许多平台现在都提供了快速播放选项。有些平台甚至为付费用户提供了高达4倍的播放速度)”可知,许多平台都推出了更快的播放选项是为了满足用户的需求。故选B。 【34题详解】 细节理解题。根据第五段“The practice has also raised different opinions. From the platforms’ perspective, faster speeds mean users consume more content, which increases advertising income. But many performers argue that something artistic is lost. Reading aloud involves pacing, tone and pause, and rushing may damage the quality of a performance. Imagine the famous monologues (独白) in Hamlet delivered at double speed — much of the meaning would disappear.(这种做法也引发了不同的观点。从平台的角度来看,更快的播放速度意味着用户会收听收看更多内容,从而增加了广告收入。但许多表演者则认为,艺术性的东西会有所损失。朗读需要节奏、语调和停顿,匆忙进行可能会损害表演的质量。想象一下,在《哈姆雷特》中那些著名的独白以两倍的速度朗读——其中大部分含义都会消失)”可知,作者提及哈姆雷特的目的是强调速度过快会损害艺术。故选A。 通读全文,特别是最后一段“Despite the disagreements, fast playback has become part of daily life for many people. For them, to speed or not to speed is no longer a real question.(尽管存在分歧,但快速回放已经成为许多人日常生活的一部分。对他们来说,加速或不加速不再是一个真正的问题)”可知,开篇通过名人争论引出 “播放速度” 争议,反映数字媒体消费习惯变化。中间介绍快速播放的普及(用户需求驱动)、优势(节省时间)、争议(影响理解、损害艺术)。结尾强调快速播放已成为许多人的日常生活一部分。因此推断全文围绕 “快速播放” 的需求、普及、争议展开,核心是 “快速播放的必要性与相关讨论”,选项 A(The need for fast playback)最能概括主旨。故选A。 School days mean homework, studying, exams, and social interactions — not to mention getting up early every morning.
