阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。
A
People who don’t feel confident in social situations often have trouble interacting with others. However, anyone can boost their confidence by ensuring their body language conveys a positive message. Practice these gestures and movements to project an air of confidence.
Lean Forward
When you are in a conversation, leaning forward indicates interest and attention, while maintaining distance indicates that you are disinterested. Research suggests that nonverbal signals such as leaning forward and facing straight ahead help convey feelings of interest.
Slow Your Movements
Fast movements make you appear more anxious. Everything from hand gestures to your walking pace can make a difference; slow down and notice how you feel more confident when you take your time.
The key, however, is to maintain other signals like eye contact and posture while moving more slowly. Slow movements combined with poor eye contact and slouched (耷拉的) posture may cause people to see you less confident.
Keep Your Chin Up
Do you look at the ground when you are walking or talking? Instead, keeping your head up and facing your conversation partner conveys interest and confidence. It might feel unnatural initially, but you will eventually become used to this more confident pose.
Give a Firm Handshake
A weak handshake is a sign of a lack of confidence, so offer a firm hand when meeting others. How long your handshake lasts can also influence how people perceive you.
Research has found that the length of a normal handshake is around three seconds or less. Handshakes lasting longer than three seconds are associated with less enjoyment of the interaction and more anxiety.
1. Which way of walking conveys confidence?
A. Walk fast with head straight up. B. Move fast with a leaning posture.
C. Walk slowly with proper eye contact. D. Move slowly with maintained distance.
2. Which body language requires considering the length of time?
A. Lean Forward. B. Slow Your Movements.
C. Keep Your Chin Up. D. Give a Firm Handshake.
3. Who is the text intended for?
A. Those who have a passion for body language. B. Those who run projects about body language.
C. Those who lack confidence in communication. D. Those who desire to boost their language skills.
B
A long face is not the only sign that someone is down. A recent study found how people walk is revealing too, particularly the swing of the arms and legs.
“Walking is one of the most familiar and well-practiced whole-body movements for humans,” said Mina Wakabayashi, the lead author of the study. “Because of this, changes in emotional state may naturally appear in the way we walk. In our results, movements with larger arm and leg swings were more likely to be perceived as angry, whereas movements with smaller swings were more likely to be perceived as sad or fearful.”
During the research, the scientists asked actors to recall life events that caused anger, happiness, fear or sadness and then walk a short distance while keeping each memory in mind. The participants wore tight clothing and reflective markers, allowing the researchers to create point-light videos from the side and front which captured their way of walking without their facial expressions and other bodily cues. Volunteers then watched the videos and declared what emotion each pace brought. They recognized all of the portrayed emotions better than chance. “To some degree, the walkers’ intended emotions were indeed perceived by the observers,” the researchers wrote in Royal Society Open Science.
A second experiment tried to determine specific movements that gave away the walkers’ emotions. To do this, the researchers took walking videos from people without extreme emotions and edited the videos to increase or reduce the arm and leg swinging. Again, the observers saw more pronounced swinging as angry, with less seen as sad or fearful.
Emotions are likely to influence all manner of other ways in which people move their bodies, and researchers hope to explore these in future work. “Being able to infer emotions from body movement may help us understand others quickly during social interactions, even without words,” Wakabayashi said. That could mean spotting people’s emotions from afar and changing how we approach them, depending on whether they seem angry or sad.
4. How do annoyed people tend to walk according to the study?
A. With quicker and lighter steps. B. With longer and firmer paces.
C. With larger arm and leg swings. D. With smaller arm and leg swings.
5. What can we infer from paragraph 3?
A. Actors are full of emotions. B. Researchers prefer using videos.
C. The participants were casually dressed. D. The results matched researchers’ prediction.
6. What does the second experiment focus on?
A. The accuracy of emotion experiments.
B. The link between certain action and emotion.
C. The ability of people to control their feelings.
D. The anger that most people feel when walking.
7. What will the researchers explore next?
A. Skills to improve social communication.
B. Methods of controlling one’s own emotions.
C. The connection between walking and health.
D. Other body movements affected by emotions.
第二节(共 5 小题,每小题 2.5 分,满分 12.5 分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。
At its most basic level, laughter affects our physical body. It enables us to take in more oxygenated air and stimulate our lungs. 8 This leads to several benefits.
Increases heart health
As we laugh at funny events, our cardiac (心脏的) health improves. Laughter provides this benefit by increasing our heart rate and lowering our blood pressure. 9 One study found that people who rarely or never laughed were 1.21 times more likely to have heart disease than those who laughed daily. This helps strengthen the benefits of humour on heart health.
Reduces physical pain
Let’s say we have a severe headache but are watching an extremely funny show. As we watch and laugh, we may become at least somewhat distracted from the headache and discomfort. 10 Established mechanisms are operating internally to enhance our ability to resist pain. Naturally occurring hormones called endorphins, for example, get to work. Because we’re laughing up a storm, our body produces these natural painkillers.
11
Laughing offers another physical benefit — it can help us sleep better. In one small-scale study, residents at a long-term care hospital engaged in 40-minute laughter therapy sessions twice a week for four weeks. Their sleep quality improved during this time, as did their feelings of depression. Combining laughter with yoga, called laughing yoga, has also been found to improve sleep quality and help us fall asleep faster. This form of yoga involves movements that make us want to laugh.
Boosts immunity
Overall, extensive laughter supports the immune system, which makes us more resistant to disease. By laughing, we increase antibody-producing cells and enhance the effectiveness of T cells in our body. 12 Physicians and mental health professionals can use laughter to help patients achieve positive health outcomes.
A. Improves sleep.
B. Improves social communication.
C. Laughter helps reduce daily stress.
D. This is much like how our body responds to exercise.
E. These tiny things act like a defense army to fight illness.
F. Moments of loud laughter also relieve tension in our muscles.
G. But the distraction alone isn’t what reduces our pain perception.
