A How many books will you read before you die? Choosing your next book can be a daunting task. Do you go with one that will broaden your worldview and pique your imagination? Perhaps a neglected classic, or the newest sensation? The choice is all the more daunting when you consider how much reading time you have left in a lifetime. But The Economist dived in with glee. Our back-of-the-envelope calculations show how many books you can still hope to read — and how to make time for the best ones. We started by asking 1,500 Americans about their reading habits with help from YouGov, a pollster. Only 54% of respondents said they read or listened to a book in 2023. Of those who did, the average was 11 books. By that count, if a seven-year-old began reading in 2023, they would get through roughly 770 books in their lifetime, according to actuarial tables. A 30-year-old might have around 500 left to read. Even a more voracious reader, who lives well into old age, would struggle to scale the mountain of books in existence. By some rough estimates there have been 160m unique titles published since the widespread adoption of the printing press in the 15th century. One would struggle to get through more than 0.003% of the total, even if reading a book a week. Don't panic. These gloomy numbers suddenly look much better if you remember Sturgeon's law: "90% of everything is crap." If you filter out the guff we reckon the average seven-year-old has plenty of time to get through a solid selection of fabulous books. To calculate this we scraped a list of critically acclaimed titles from 1000bookstoread.com. Then, with the help of howlongtoread.com, we created a rough estimate for how long it would take to get through the roughly 900 books for which we found the data. If you read 11 books a year, it would probably take you 84 years to finish our rough list of classics. But read daily for half an hour, and we reckon you could complete it in 51 years. A young reader might start with Beatrix Potter's "The World of Peter Rabbit", easily finished in a couple of days, and end with a 92-day slog through Leo Tolstoy's "War and Peace" aged just 58. 21. What did The Economist do to work out how many books people can still read? A. It interviewed 1,500 famous writers worldwide. B. It surveyed 1,500 Americans about their reading habits. C. It counted all the books published since the 1500s. D. It borrowed loan records from public libraries. 22. What can we infer from the time estimates in the last paragraph? A. Reading a book a week is enough to finish all classics. B. Daily reading habits decide how many books one can finish. C. Seven-year-old children read much faster than adults. D. Most Americans manage to read 11 books a year. 23. What is the main purpose of the passage? A. To criticize people who never open a book. B. To prove that most published books are worthless. C. To encourage readers to plan time for good books. D. To advertise a new book-list website. B Zheng Qinwen has reached her first Grand Slam final. In fact, she is the first person from China to do so in 10 years. Zheng grew up watching the last Chinese Grand Slam winner, Li Na, and has said she has watched the 2014 Australian Open final 'at least 10 times.' Zheng Qinwen, the brightest of China's growing cohort of bright tennis lights, was 7 years old when she first picked up a racket. Almost instantly, she was among the best children her age in her hometown, Shiyan. She loved the sport, and after two months she and her father traveled to Wuhan to show off her game to a more advanced coach. The opportunity thrilled her. Her father, however, left out one detail: since she had done well, she would not be coming home with him and instead would stay in Wuhan to train. "I cried a lot," Zheng, 21, said. Zheng and every young Chinese player carries a unique burden onto the tennis court. Their generation came of age as part of the tennis boom that Li Na wrought to the country. Li, who became the first person from China to win a Grand Slam singles title, is a groundbreaking figure, inspiring countless children to pick up tennis rackets. After roughly three years in Wuhan, she moved to Beijing to train at an academy overseen by Carlos Rodriguez, who coached Li. She turned professional at 15, and began a mostly steady climb up the rankings. At the French Open last year, she appeared on the verge of a breakthrough, winning the opening set of her match against top-ranked Iga Swiatek before succumbing to menstrual cramps. But then her progress seemed to stall. This spring, her management team reached out to Wim Fissette, a Belgian known as one of the top coaches in the game. In Zheng he saw an explosive, athletic player, but a young woman who still seemed fairly raw. He did some due diligence and learned she had a reputation as a hard worker who was extremely ambitious. Already though Zheng has begun to adopt some of the trademarks of Fissette's previous charges, playing with more offense and aggression. "Be the one to dominate the game," he tells her. "The champion is almost always the one who is dominating, not the one who is being defensive." 24. What achievement of Zheng Qinwen is mentioned in the first paragraph? A. She reached her first Grand Slam final and is the first Chinese to do so in 10 years. B. She won the Australian Open singles title last year. C. She has been coaching Li Na since 2014. D. She turned professional at the age of 21. 25. What is the relationship between Zheng Qinwen and Li Na? A. They are longtime training rivals. B. Li Na inspired her and the two later became friends. C. Li Na was her coach in Wuhan for three years. D. They have never actually met in person. 26. What does paragraph 2 suggest about Zheng Qinwen's early experience of leaving home to train? A. Amusing and relaxing. B. Extremely sad or painful. C. Encouraging and hopeful. D. Confusing and unclear. 27. What is the author's main purpose in writing the passage? A. To show how a Chinese tennis star grew into a Grand Slam finalist. B. To compare Zheng Qinwen's style with that of Li Na. C. To criticize the Chinese sports-academy system. D. To promote tennis training centres in Wuhan. C This is what the world could look like in 2070. On TikTok, a viral "aged" filter recently gave users a glimpse into their future. The AI-generated filter predicts how you might look in 50 years, complete with sagging skin, deeper wrinkles, and dark spots. In a matter of months, the filter amassed close to 11 billion views, and shook many with a sneak peek into the aging process. To predict how climate change will expose us to disaster, reshape agriculture, or make some regions unlivable, scientists run models that forecast how the world will change. Yet, when it comes to climate change, statistics and figures often aren't as powerful as staggering photos of cities sinking under rising sea levels — images that help bring home the climate crisis in a way numbers never could. The world's leading climate scientists' predictions warned that the world is likely to pass a dangerous temperature tipping point within the next 10 years, unless nations immediately transition away from fossil fuels. A third of the world's population could live in a climate similar to the Sahara in just 50 years, according to a study published in PNAS in 2020. National Geographic produced its own interactive feature in 2020 that takes a look at what the world will feel like in 50 years: By the 2070s, it shows Boston will feel more like Bardwell, Kentucky, with summers averaging 8°F hotter; and London will feel more like Sovicille, Italy, with summer temperatures rising 6°F. Climate scientist Katharine Hayhoe tries to help people imagine how a warming planet will affect them personally. "We have to understand what's going to happen if we don't do anything. But we also have to understand what doing something looks like, otherwise, you just have a bunch of scared people who are paralyzed," stresses Hayhoe. The book "The Future We Choose" offers two different versions of how the world might look in 2050: a worst case scenario and a best case scenario of a world no more than 1.5°C warmer by 2100. 28. What is the function of the TikTok "aged" filter mentioned in the passage? A. It helps young users look younger online. B. It predicts the weather for the next 50 years. C. It teaches people how to take photos. D. It shows users' aged appearance and raises climate concern. 29. What did the world's leading climate scientists warn about? A. Climate change has already stopped worsening. B. One third of the population will move to the Sahara. C. A dangerous tipping point may come within 10 years without action. D. Global sea levels will remain stable this century. 30. What does the phrase "bring home" in paragraph 2 most probably mean? A. To carry something back to one's house. B. To make someone realize the importance of something. C. To deliver goods to a customer. D. To reduce the size of something. 31. What is the main idea of the passage? A. To alert readers to climate risks and urge action by showing two scenarios. B. To praise the creativity of TikTok filters. C. To introduce the magazine National Geographic. D. To criticize governments for doing nothing. D Anyone spending their Christmas holidays on the European mainland will likely have observed that it is quite common to meet staff in shops and hotels who can hold a conversation in English. This fact should come as no surprise. The reasons are diverse and well known. English is a major language of culture, and it is the third most spoken language in the world as a native language, after Chinese and Spanish. Native speakers of English number about 373m, mostly concentrated in six advanced industrialised democracies which together produce 33% of the world's gross domestic product. As a result of the colonial legacy, English is an official or co-official language in many countries, mainly in Africa. English still rules the world, but that's not necessarily OK. Is it time to curb its power? The communication value of English is therefore high, and so is the interest in learning it. Native and non-native speakers in the world total between 1 billion and 1.5 billion. The emergence of English as the predominant international language is seen by many as a positive phenomenon with several practical advantages and no downside. However, it also raises problems that are slowly beginning to be understood and studied. The most important challenge is that of fairness or "linguistic justice". A common language is a bit like a telephone network: the more people know a language, the more useful it becomes. Those who learn English as a second language incur learning costs, while native speakers can communicate with all network members without incurring such costs. It's like getting the latest smartphone model and sim card with unlimited data for free. François Grin estimates that western European countries spend between 5% and 15% of their education budget on foreign language teaching. In the EU, most of these resources go to the teaching of a single language, English. However, some compensatory measures may help reduce global linguistic injustice. Philippe Van Parijs has proposed a linguistic tax on English-speaking countries to compensate for the costs of teaching English in other countries. Other proposals include more intensive use of machine translation and artificial intelligence in scientific publications. 32. Why is English so widely used according to the passage? A. It is the most spoken language in the world. B. It is the third most spoken native language and spread through colonial legacy. C. It is spoken only in the US and the UK. D. It is an official language in every country. 33. What is the problem of "linguistic justice" mentioned in the passage? A. English learning is completely free for everyone. B. All people learn English at exactly the same cost. C. Non-native speakers bear unfair learning costs while natives do not. D. Native speakers pay more to learn other languages. 34. What does the word "predominant" in paragraph 4 most probably mean? A. Leading or most powerful. B. Disappearing gradually. C. Completely neutral. D. Limited to a small local area. 35. What is the author's attitude towards English's global dominance? A. He urges everyone to learn English as soon as possible. B. He celebrates the cultural advantage of English. C. He examines its unfairness and suggests possible remedies. D. He predicts English will soon decline and disappear. Writing While Traveling Writing while traveling can be either professional or personal. Then the Inmates Fell in Love. Some say they were first brought in to take out the rats. Others 41 they wandered in on their own. What everyone can 42 on is that the cats were here first. For decades, they have walked along the prison's high walls, sunbathed on the metal roof and skittered between cells 43 with 10 men each. The cats kept 44 into the hundreds. Then prison officials realized something else: the feline residents were not only good for the rat 45 . They were also good for the inmates. "They're our 46 ," said Carlos Nuñez, a prisoner showing 47 a 2-year-old tabby he named Feita. "A cat makes you worry about it, feed it, take care of it," he said. Known simply as "the Pen," the 180-year-old main penitentiary in Santiago has long been 48 as a place where men live in cages and cats 49 free. What is now more clearly understood is the positive 50 of the prison's roughly 300 cats on the 5,600 human residents. The felines' presence "has changed the inmates' mood, has 51 their behavior and has strengthened their sense of responsibility," said the prison's warden. "Prisons are 52 places. So of course, when you see there's an animal giving 53 , it logically causes a change in behavior, a change in mindset." Prisoners informally adopt the cats, work together to care for them, share their food and 54 . In return, the cats provide something invaluable in a lockup notorious for overcrowding: love, affection and acceptance. "Sometimes you'll be depressed and it's like she senses that you're a bit down," said Reinaldo Rodriguez, who is scheduled to be 55 until 2031. He was referring to Chillona, a relaxed black cat that has become the darling of a nine-man cell. When he is freed, what would happen to his cat? "She's coming with me." 41. The harrowing scene was caught on video from inside the plane, which collided with a Japanese Coast Guard aircraft as it was landing on Tuesday in Tokyo. Through skill and luck — one aviation expert called it "a miraculous job" — the flight crew of the Japan Airlines plane evacuated all 367 passengers and 12 crew members safely at Haneda Airport near Tokyo Bay. But five Coast Guard members, who had been headed to help with the earthquake relief in Western Japan, were killed. Japan Airlines crews are trained to evacuate all passengers within 90 seconds. The crew was able to confirm that all passengers had evacuated by 6:05 p.m. Footage showed flames coming out of the windows of the collapsed plane, making it seem impossible that everyone made it out safe. Paragraph 1: As the last passenger stepped off the plane, the cabin crew let out a sigh of relief. Paragraph 2: The next morning, a small memorial ceremony was held at Haneda Airport for the five Coast Guard members. 21-23 B B C 24-27 A B B A 28-31 D C B A 32-35 B C A C 36-40 D multiplying into the hundreds(猫不断繁衍至数百只)一致。 对标雅礼中学完形以同词性近义动词(如 secured/sought/delayed/missed)设扰、提升区分度。选D。 45. 答案 A。 对标雅礼(promising/popular/competitive/steady 同形容词场)以同场域名词设扰。选A。 46. 干扰项 partners(搭档)、roommates(室友)、mascots(吉祥物)均属'相伴关系'场域,partners 出现)、around(show around 带… 对标雅礼(carrying on with / making use of 等同结构短语)以成套短语设扰。选C。 48. be known as 意为'作为…… 干扰项 seen(be seen as 被视为)、labelled(be labelled as 被贴上…标签)、criticized(be criticized as 被批评为)皆为 'be _ as' 结构且态度色彩有别,labelled/criticized 更添变化,须辨'闻名'而非'被贴标签/被批评'。对标雅礼(secured/sought/delayed/missed 异梯度动词)以同结构异义设扰。选D。 49. 答案 A。 干扰项 wander(游荡,近义强扰)、stray(走失、偏离)、prowl(潜行觅食)皆表'移动',wander 与 roam 几近同义最具迷惑性,stray/prowl 侧重'偏离/觅食'不符'自由自在'。对标雅礼(moreover/instead/therefore/however 逻辑连接词场)以同词性近义设扰。选A。 50. effect 为名词'影响',the positive effect of ... on ... 干扰项 impact(影响)、influence(影响)、role(作用)同为名词且均与 on 搭配,impact/influence 与 effect 近义构成强扰,role 侧重'角色'略有差异。对标雅礼(making use of / giving in to 等同结构短语,词性一致)以统一词性设扰。选B。 51. 干扰项 controlled(控制)、shaped(塑造)、monitored(监督)皆属'影响行为'动词场,shaped 近义强扰,monitored 仅'观察'不及'规范'到位。对标雅礼(excited/inspired/determined/confused 同形容词场)以同场域动词设扰。选C。 52. 对标雅礼(honest/hopeful/successful/responsible 同形容词场)以同场域设扰。选D。 53. 答案 A。 干扰项 comfort(安慰)、warmth(温暖)、devotion(挚爱)皆属'正向情感'名词场,comfort/warmth 近义强扰,devotion 程度更深,须辨'关爱'而非'献身'。对标雅礼(welcomed/advertised/copied/sold 同动词场)以同场域设扰。选A。 54. share their food and beds 干扰项 blankets(毯子)、shelters(栖身之处)、space(空间)皆属'共同生活物资'名词场,blankets 近义强扰,shelters/space 更概括,均合理却不及 beds 贴合'同住'。对标雅礼(died away/held back/used up/came out 同短语场)以同场域设扰。选B。 55. When the clock strikes midnight 介词 of 后接名词/动名词,begin→beginning,a new beginning 意为'新的开始'。 58. 答案 to。 when it comes to (doing) sth 时',填 to。 59. 答案 a。 beginning with smaller wins 61. 答案 which。 make a contract with yourself 后接非限制性定语从句,which 指代 contract,在从句中作主语,意为'这份约定规定那道菜必须洗',填 which。 62. 63. 答案 to think。 I'm Li Hua. It's a great honor to be invited to share my thoughts on effective communication with you. From my experience in group work and daily life, I'd like to share three effective tips. First, know your audience. Before speaking, try to learn about the listener's background and needs so that your words truly reach them. Second, use body language wisely. A smile or proper eye contact can bridge gaps and build trust. Third, learn to empathize. Putting yourself in others' shoes helps you listen and reply with real care. Good communication, I think, begins with a sincere heart. Thank you! 第二节 读后续写(参考范文) As the last passenger stepped off the plane, the cabin crew let out a sigh of relief. For ninety tense minutes, discipline and training had turned a death trap into a story of survival. The flight attendants, voices hoarse from shouting instructions, exchanged silent nods — they had done their duty. Yet their relief was shadowed by grief: five Coast Guard members, rushing toward victims of another disaster, would never return home. It was a moment that laid bare the thin line between luck and loss, and the quiet heroism of those who choose to serve. The next morning, a small memorial ceremony was held at Haneda Airport for the five Coast Guard members. Prime Minister Kishida offered profound condolences, praising their "determined sense of mission." Beyond the speeches, ordinary passengers came to lay flowers, many still clutching the luggage they had wisely left behind to escape faster. The contrast was striking: in the face of fire, strangers had chosen others over things, and a nation bowed its head for heroes it had never met. True courage, the day reminded us, is not the absence of fear, but the choice to move toward it for someone else.
